- The House is expected to vote Wednesday on a bill that would require Chinese-based ByteDance to either sell TikTok or face the app getting banned in the U.S. There has been speculation about whether the app poses a threat to national security. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., says he's no fan of the Chinese government, but he's not for preventing the U.S. from having trade with China. "We know that the Chinese government does demand things, but we don't know that any information really is going from TikTok to any of these people in China," Paul says.

I see where Rand Paul is coming from , he is somebody who looks at precedent and is attempting to make aware that this precedent creates conditions for banning other social media companies if a case cane be made that the investors are foreign .

I used to think the way you do, but the answer is actually quite simple. He changed his tune because a guy who owns a significant share in the company has donated to Rand Paul's campaign. It's that simple, same goes for Carlson I bet but he stooped so low he's never getting out of that hole again. The fact that they think that their actions are not transparent should be an insult to your intelligence but that's up to you how you feel about it.
I would be concerned if only the U.S government did not the same thing or worse to it's own citizens.

@@vivisects-and-regicide The compromise in the case of tobacco and pharmaceutical products was that government and society should mandate warning labels of potential health risks or side effects associated with using those products (which people can voluntarily consent to using or not after viewing, largely without depriving anyone else of their rights unlike in the case of the slave trade, and rehabilitation and therapy services exist if they do become addicted and have problems quitting when they desire to do so). I would not necessarily mind a similar "informed consent" message being mandated on the sign-up pages for and notices sent to accounts on social media such as TikTok (e.g., mental health risks), but banning or limiting access to these platforms is an affront to freedom of expression and freedom of association in an open society. Also, the national security risks of social media are vastly overhyped and can basically be reduced to "the MICIMATT does not want proles being exposed to contrary information from sources outside the legacy media that could complicate their policy priorities."

I agree with Senator Paul's stance (while simultaneously disliking TikTok, alongside other major social media platforms), but I will concede that he may have a financial incentive for taking it, since he has received major campaign contributions from Jeffrey Yass, who owns a fifteen percent stake in ByteDance. "Principle" and "Congress" rarely belong in the same sentence, which certainly applies to all of the other legislators who make a literal killing off whipping up Sinophobic hysteria.
Maybe he just knows having the government banning things is atrociously dumb.

I thought Rand Paul was more grounded than this. Even if TikTok has distributed ownership, says nothing about the company using data inappropriately. It’s like any public company that issues stock … the stockholders may have no influence over how the company uses data; only takes a few, well-placed company officers.
