WHEN YOU ROLL, YOUR ROLL SHOULD NEVER, EVER HURT. ROLLING IS AN ART, AND IT TAKES A TON OF TIME TO MASTER. DO NOT EVER LISTEN TO ANYONE SAY THAT ITS SUPPOSED TO HURT. PAIN MEANS YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG. I know a guy who has permanent back damage because he listened to people say it would hurt and to just deal with it. Thumbs Up to save people from injury so they see this!
No joke, i just wanted to look for a roll tutorial so i opened youtube and BAM there was your video in the subscription bar xD thanks dude
man i have never done a parkour in my life but yet i watch your vid for 10 minutes and i could do a parkour roll now 5 stars man
this is great, i just got the whole thing, so every vid tutorial, and right now, all im focused on is perfecting my roll
yeahh, nice tutorial, very clear, good uv made something like this because much people are still askin how to perform a roll, hope this will teach them something^^ keep the tuts up! respect
this was so easy though i was a little bit afraid
thx man i appreciate your video and im gonna look at the others
yeah me too. try diving rolls on a carpet or grass to strengthen the shoulder. and to take in the momentum and redirect it to your upper body to fully spring off the ground.
all it is is a modified judo fall break. instead of staying on the ground to end the momentum, you come back up. it's taught in judo to saveyou from a painful throw or trip/fall. if done right, you can roll down aflight of stairs with no problems/injuries
This helped me realize that i had my hands to far out for the roll now i know to put them closer
great video on rolls i now know how to do one.
Thanks.
think of it this way... the way the guy positions his arms for the 'collapse and support' technique is more like a tire or wheel, from the arms, you want to roll from the front arm up to its shoulder, continuing the momentum in a straight line that causes you to roll from shoulder to right above the opposite hip, and if done proper, you're legs will follow. now, if you are just practicing, from a stopped , standing possition, then yes, push off to start the momentum.
The video is a mere 3:55, if you are desperate to see the examples they come at the end (easy to skip to if you cant wait) but the explanation is the most important part, watching a roll on its own does nothing to help beginners. Peace
Yesh, I can now do a roll. Thank you 3run person.
Thanks to him I know how to jump from a two story house(after a couple months of practice)
thnks!!! this video is too usefull becouse i can't do the roll!! but tomorrow i going to try with this technic!!! :D really thnks!!
Outside? I never heard of that server before.
Thanks mate great tutorial.Could you possibly do a tutorial of how to do it running or diving ?
As Nitebringer said, its fine to learn just on one side, though it is worth developing both sides in time...
Peace
Thanks. Now i know how to do a roll!!! THANKS!
Primary traceur rolling issues I've seen:
• not roll diagonally/shoulder to opposite hip - best to limit "spine time" & also raises muscles so you fall on soft tissue rather than vertebra
• hit head on forward rolls
• not use arms/their 1st point of contact is shoulder - so don't spread force of the fall - can lead to shoulder problems
• many jump & roll where force vector is aimed down too much rather than out - increases force that comes into their body rather than spreading force of fall
Buenisimo...!!!!!!!!!!!!!! era justo lo que estaba buscando
gracias por el video
The first time I did it it hurt like hell but I got it thanks man
@ImAFlyingWhale Totally.
I think what troubles you is the hip bone.Don't practise on soft surface-It will make you miss-learn the roll.
Try experimenting with your exti and feet placement as you exit the roll.
@2ndhandAcrobatman Try rolling at a slightly straighter degree instead of on your side i think. More vertical, less horizontal. Need the balance in-between so you dont hurt your shoulder (too vertical) or your hip (too horizontal)
yeah this are very important questions and need to be answered
His roll is very similar to the one done in Jujutsu. Just curl into a ball as much as you can when doing the roll. Don't jump onto the floor... but try to feel yourself "rolling" along the ground. And not jump ON the ground and THEN roll. That's where you get hurt. Instead... coil up into a ball as much as you can, and roll along the road. Roll with it, do not go against it. :) And that's it!
you need to go over your right/left shoulder, so it's not rolling on your spine. if that fraction of a second that it crosses your spine hurts you, the only thing I can think of is just to wear a couple of shirts as cushion.
Wow helped me a lot , thanks dude !! :)
Great video.. very well explained, helpful.. thanks!.. 5/5
You should do a tutorial from that ledge behind u to show how it would be done from higher instead of on the ground. Whats the highest you guys have jumped from?
Thanks! I've always screwed up on the rolls for some certain reason during the times when i come down with impact. I watched other videos, but they were'nt as good as yours! btw how did you make the video so crystal clear, and what camera did you use?
great explanation, gd demonstration :)
thanks man, this is such an easy move :D
@TheYusufPatel Thnx for your input. I think it actually is a bit personal, I like it more with 2 feet on the ground, maybe not good for momentum but I find it more controlled. (still breaks my falls good too)
@TheOnesTainted
Don't stop, just perfect your technique so that you roll in a way without pain. There is a difference between pain and discomfort though: You'll always have discomfort rolling on pavement, but shouldn't have pain.
it looks pretty clear,
but it's harder than it looks
I'm practicing it now ! (:
i've the same problem sometimes-i think when you get into the roll you dont really, well, i think you collapse into the roll so you land directly on your shoulder, without using your arm to bound off the impact (sorry for my bad english)
i think you crash into the roll-perhaps you should try every technique to find yours-good luck^^
great tutorials!
Thank You this really helped
@ImAFlyingWhale yup it's very natural and it's very easy to realize when you're making a mistake (you'll mainly feel pain in the back of the head, the shoulder or the spine), but if you practice first while being crouched, you should get a good feeling of it before doing it in speed. If you're feeling a lot of pain after 2 or 3 times, give it a brake and when you feel better, do it slowly. If this doesn't help you (i don't see why), look for "falling aikido", maybe it helps.
2:01... the way he says "locked" BHAAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
yeah dude. I do the tuck and roll. Usually on grass though I should practice on concrete.
"welcom bac"
REMEMBER! always roll on something soft for starters! I found that grass or carpet is good, and dont be afraid to roll on concrete when you feel comfortable! Parkour and Free-Running isnt just about doing cool stuff, its about gaining self confidence!
Thanks for the help bro!
He did forget to say one important thing guys, THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT! You are rolling from your shoulder to the OPPOSITE HIP! DONT JUST GO ON YOUR SHOULDER AND GO STRAIGHT! give it a little angle, make sure your spine is in as little contact as possible!
One thing I've learned is that you need to finish the roll by rolling onto your feet, because what you do and I do is keep the left leg bent and you can slam your ankle onto the ground
@ImAFlyingWhale you may not be arching your back enough when you roll. curl up into a smaller ball and it will help. if you keep your back straight, your lower back is going to slap when you start to come over with the roll.
@T0mstyle Thats wat i had thought initially but last weekend i was taught that its better for continuing momoentum if u make the figure of four with ur legs like that
i can do that too :) , its nice to jump down from high points without getting hurt :)
@MasterMaxD , thanks!!! using blanket is a great idea
great tutorial!
I have a question though, if we're doing a drop into a roll, should we try to jump as far as we can and try to extend our body forward before the roll?
@sn1p3rsh4wn - Thanks For the tip. I just started rolling (ish) following this tutorial :)
Quick question, though. I feel dumb asking, but when you roll, are you supposed to feel really dizzy, or is that something you get used to over time?
you can do it at any wieght mate it's all about the fun just go easy if you're heavy
Thx good tutorial.
I always hurt my self performing a roll -.- sux but im gonna go on trying:D
i tried to learn this, but i just couldn't do it, maybe with this explaination?? thanks a lot ;P i'm a beginner. I keep jumping of everyting and hangin on all ledges i see ;P Thanks for this :-)
@Porodyn No, not at all. I really damaged my shoulder for 5 months by doing improper rolls repeatedly. One should never continue if you are getting chronic pain due to the rolls. (pain when not rolling). The roll is mostly about technique, but strength always helps.
Thx that relly helpt me alot =)... Could't do it on harder surfaces like concrete .. thx =)
@ImAFlyingWhale
Yeah that's pretty normal, provided it is only bruising, but the point is to practice not bruising youself. I f you put your hand on your hip with you thumb pointing back, you should be able to feel two bones, (processes) one of them on the side and the other near the middle of your lower back, point is to get between these two points.
@Demonbane93 It is only it depends on where you make the roll, if you do it on a hard flooring in t-shirt its more than logical it hurts your spine, the more fluid your roll is the less it hurts though.
Very nice tutorial! 5*****
the video helps a lot
Nice Tutorial man !
-peace-
@ddd1234ify jump to a trampoline from the roof of a house or something, even if you don't know how to roll you'll still do it anyway like an instinct. just use your knees as shock absorbers your forward motion will sort of push/pull you into a roll.
@yoscott1
Try to build up your back muscles. Also, decrease the radius of your roll. I've seen some people who basically do a barrel-roll on the ground.
Amazing quality ;o
Thx u really helped
Sam, you mentioned that you roll from your right side. Is it important to be ambidextrous on your rolls, or is it sufficient to just roll from one side?
man my rolls needed work so i watch this video
@monkdudeable yea really. i think it's just cos of the camera angle. purpose of roll is to reduce impact, only parts that come into contact with the ground are your feet, back and palm of hands. if the elbow does touch the ground, elbow=hard, cement=hard, that's gona be a solid impact. not good..
@thevideochief
OR you can simply practice your own technique and figure out what roll works for you, because everyone's body is different. Just make sure it doesnt hurt.
Its up at the top of my arm under my shoulder. Its the spot that hurts really bad when someone punches you there
thanks i kinda got it now
That really helped
@Sn1p3rSh4wn i dont think it matters if you master it or not, like what if you did a pk roll from a 500ft building, like theres a good chance you could break a leg or something like that
Hym! Look's Easy, But When I Do. I Looked Like I'm a Nerd! LOL!;)
First use your hands as he is showing, ("the collapsing part"), and then tuck your head into it, so you will roll with your shoulder and not with your spine. Don't be afraid of hurting ur head, coz u wont. it doesnt hit the ground (at least it shouldnt...) I do it that way, and i m always safe and sound...altough i dont take any responsibility for what happens to you
The Idea-er haha :D I love these accents.
Niiiice man.
Man i feel like giving up i practice it practice it practice it and adjust adjust and adjust and i keep hitting my left hip bone.. sometimes it doesnt hurt when i jump off highs but really it just would ease my mind if i could get it right
@K41R0NV3RB0N
Practice on GRASS until you MASTER the roll without feeling any hard impact on the spine, ribs, or hips. Roll around on concrete to see what you're hitting in your roll that is painfull, then go back on grass and fix it. Everyone has a much different roll because of their different body shapes. The idea in Parkour is to learn how to move your body, not to learn pre-set moves learned on someone else's.
Oh thanks!
Whenever I used to do the roll properly, where it really felt right and didn't hurt anywhere and I would launch back to my feet with all my momentum... I would still usually seem to snag my hip bone. The snagging really hurts and ruins the perfect roll. Would be nice to know what I was doing wrong for this to happen >
I like cameras colors
yay, now i can breakfalll
Thanks :D
very nice
@Sn1p3rSh4wn Why would someone think that O.o, rolls are slightly uncomfortable as you are effectively lying on a hard surface and getting up but if something hurts; that is your body telling you that you are damaging it.
Really, you should practice it on a soft surface first to get the technique, then occasionally try it on harder surfaces to check that it works. Sustaining to much bruises to begin with will only slow down the learning process.
at 3:28 it looks like you're rolling on your left ankle on the ground? Isn't that risky for an ankle injury ( shattering some bones from the impact)
cheers
You should get chase to make a tutorial on the wall full.
Thats the Idear!
are your muscles on the back of your shoulder suppose to hurt? My friend (hows been doing parkour for quite awhile) told me that i just need to develop more muscle on the back of my shoulder
what would the limits of this technique be? Is there a point where the height of a jump is so high that transferring the energy perfectly would still break something or kill you? Say 40-50 feet, could you safely do this without breaking anything or feeling much pain (if you did it perfectly)?
@SHOOTthenLAUGH your left leg? so do you go over your right shoulder? what i do,( i roll over my left but im gonna swap around) as i come out of the roll, place the outside of my right leg on the ground with my left leg coming over it
You need to turn your body on the exit of the roll to avoid your hip. Check this video at 6:53
Hope this helps you :)
so THATS the idear!
hey dude, at what point are you supposed to cross on the back during the roll, meaning the upper or lower.
That is 1.803 in meters, and you really don't have to be skinny to do parkour. I started off sorta heavy for my height (like 150 at 5,3) and alot of that weight came off as i progressed in PK.
So dont worry about ur weight right now, just dont do any drops, have fun with it and eat right and it will be gone before you know it.
just curious, im a beginner and never practiced any kind of rolls before, i lead the roll with my right shoulder and end on my left lower back, is it natural for someone who has never done this type of thing before to feel a little bit of pain on the left lower back when you first start off?
