This is the extended edition of my old tutorial containing remastered scenes, and more polished tutorial.
I received so many request on how to build a plane, so here it is. A video guide on how to build simple plane (not the SimplePlanes game) on Besiege. By simple it will cover everything from building engine, designing wings and stabilizers, and how to controlling via ailerons and elevators.
This basic Simple Plane Tutorial will not covers the usage of mods, since you need to know how to build things properly without mods first.
All building footages are recorded in Besiege 0.42b
On the first part of the video guide, we already covers the engine, wings, and stabilizers. Now, it covers the control surfaces.

I used my first recorded aircraft as an example in the video. It was simple enough but has exceptional stability and manuvreability so I think it is a good example.

I will do my best to assist you solving the problem.
Bravo! how did you make those tips effects at left? so elegant
Thanks, i added it to make it looks more professional.
It's not that hard, just create the box with square tool, then keyframed the scale.
Hector Drako bravo is an italian word, are you, italian?
ma bene
Watching this video after four years almost and it is still relevant...... The explanation with scientific reasoning is perfect and I don't need any other tutorial for flight.. I have been working on a transformer that is a car and takes to the sky on transformation the turning mechanism explained here is going to solve the issue I have been facing since last 5 days... Thank you very much for your help.
2020
Just a tip, when explaining and building at the same time it would be convenient if you did it a little slower so that people can actually see what your doing xD
Other than that great vids keep up the great work :D
thanks for the feedback, but i thought people like short tutorials so i try to keep mine under 10 minutes
people prefer more detailed and slower tutorials over fast and quick ones. Try going a bit slower next time. Great video other than that!
alright thanks for the feedback
Yup, same here, had to pause at each step/placement to follow what was done lol
You should have way more than 33k subs. Great vid. I like it when someone ACCURATELY combines physics with games. Keep up the amazing work
you will be a excellent engineer one day. :)
I'm bad at math
Cannot thank you enough ;p To begin with my planes dont get off the ground to say the least.
Hope it helps :)
Cant get off the ground means not enough thrust or not enough lift.
Turned out that this tutorial made it get off the ground c:
I can't make the aileron. The pistons are stuck when I try to copy what you do.
Bit late, I know, but what did they say to help. I'm having the same problem.
You have to key map them differently so both aren’t going at the same time
aand check the rotation of the hinge because its stuck if its incorrect
Great video I've been confused for a while how to properly make roll and pitch changes
Thank you! You'll love part 3 then
great tutorial
Dude your knowledge is impeccable Bravo keep it up
2020 gang
Very nice vid learned alot thanks
Thats really helpful, thanks mate!
A question wich doesnt really belong under this video, but anyways: how is it possible that canons have that many shots like in 6:33 - or are this just tiny bombs?
+DuPSgamER it's just infinite ammo on.
My contra rotating props are working properly what do I do?
Il be building a nimrod mk1 and then a 2 after this tutorial
I USED THIS VIDEO TO BUILD A VTOL THANK YOU SO MUCH
My god my guy is MR Airplane
great tutorial kid, keep it up! :)
can fly ferfect in the air though
Hi,
Thank you a lot for your tutorial, I learnt a lot in besiege (and I guess in basic physics).
I tried to replicate the exact same plane as you but in the end it wasn't functionnal (I've done some changes and got something "correct", the only thing is that the plane doesn't seems to want to fly off, maybe not enough thrust even if I didn't added that much brace)...
And so! I downloaded your creation, tested it and I was wondering if it was normal that your plane tended to tilt left? (as it's certainly not your mistake)
I read that it was maybe because of the unity engine?
Is this problem on every plane? Or only 1 centered motor ones?
Anyway great thanks!
The thrust problem usually because you forgot to rotate some of the propeller blades with R before placing it.
The tendency to tilt is a bit complex, part of it is unity engine, another part is dysymmetry of lift caused by single motor, there's some workaround for it but it's a bit more advanced. Also it's negligible so we shouldn't worry about it.
And yes, if you make it multi engine it should be better.
@@Dawn-Shade Rotate it with R before placing an object isn't the same as pressing "F" on it? Imma check that, thank you (else, I've checked them multiples times. I'll try to make others planes to get the idea so don't worry about this one thanks).
Did you perhaps have done any video in relation with this "workaround"?
I've heard of the same strategy as helicopters (2 engines, 1 clockwise the other one counter-clockwise) but maybe there is better, I'll take a look.
Yeah we shouldn't worry about that, planes seems really fine as they are but... I kind of have the need to make perfect machines? I dunno if I can I just want to try things. ;)
@@Sulff629 R is rotate 90 degrees. F is flip a.k.a mirror which isn't the same as rotating it 180 degrees.
Hmm not me but my friend CCCanyon has. Search for "symmetrical deletion besiege cccanyon". That will solve at least the unity engine problem.
It's different from counter rotation. Disymmetry of lift is when advancing blades got more lift than the withdrawing ones. My counter rotating props aren't perfect because they didn't finish a spin at the exact time. If you can solve it then it should decrease said tendency.
I made one but it cant take off
Amazing work!
Thank you for teaching me.
What? When i do the ailerons, they dont work, i brace them to the plane, in the same place, and it wont pull anymore. Why?! I copied your plane to inspect, through steam, and its not working! (EDIT) wow. just wow, i placed it on the wrong block. and have been for the past 2 days.
What mod are you using for the realistic planes
It's built in the game now, you no longer needs any mods
Hey I downloaded you plane to try. I think I realized why people were having problems. The back two wheels on the engine werent keyed and were set to z and x with toggle mode off. Without changing it would refuse to turn off. I changed them to be like the others and now your plane works perfectly. Sorry for the 4 year late reply. :P
For some reason the aileron would not work even though i did the exact same thing as you instead it just wiggles a little
Probably either the hinge or swivel stuck. Make sure they can move by using the hand tool before connecting them with braces.
But if you're still stuck the recent update has return to center steering hinge so it's actually recommended to use that now.
at the front of the plane i placed two swivel joints however only one of the propellers move
The non moving one needs to be connected via a brace to the rotating starting block
You have a very good narrating voice, and its very comfortable to listen to. Here's a sub and a thumbs up
Sorry but what
When making these part videos it is really annoying to have part 1 complete and have to delete some and then add on again. JUST DO THE WHOLE TUTORIAL WITHOUT DELETING THINGS.
Deleting/erasing is common in creating design. This is like making a rough sketch first before doing details and color. It's easier to erase the sketch after everything looks good than having to draw details from the start, especially for beginners.
In this case we make sure it can fly first before start doing other things
Well its more advanced. And he did not remove much, I really enjoyed this and it helped me to make some of my own creations thank you very much!
this is sick
pleas help me my plane does not hav inove power but i made the weels as fast as yours
have you flip all the blades on the second spinning rotor?
I love the Fire Emblem Fates music in the background. Also excellent video
My first plane can fly ok, it's just made of wing panels and is controlled directly with steering hinges and blocks. There is no return to center, either. I've also experimented with using cannons for thrust instead of propellers; the results were varying and were amusing.
I didn't quite catch what you said when you began toggling with the settings of the wheels (~3:28). I've run it back (and copied exactly what you did) but my plane just rips itself to pieces. (Are you not supposed to use those two wheels in the engine, hence them being set to z and x? I can't tell because I can't see your keyboard and what you press when you fly)
Also, I'm constantly having an issue with my plane tilting/drifting/turning to the right (I'm not sure what part of the plane is doing it) even though it's a near-carbon-copy of yours. All my planes have this issue, but I can never find a solution. I've checked the weighting and double-checked every propellor to make sure that they are all flipped correctly, but nothing seems to work. And, as an additional issue, because it's constantly flying to the right I can't tilt the plane left with the aileron. The only thing I can do is tilt it further right and crash it into the ground faster.
I use C to toggle engine. You toggle it when you turn on the engine. This will keep the plane powered even when you are not accelerating. Then I use Z to accelerate and X to brake. These two wheels are only spinning when you need to modify the plane speed.
When I fly, I press C first then hold Z until it takes off.
I can't tell the solution of the drifting problem since I can't see your plane. It can be multiple things
It could be the engine is too attached to the plane.
the concepts are concrete but the result is non - functional
its just the basic that helps people understanding how planes work in besiege, although you need some basic understanding on how the game works.
then after you have much more advanced besiege tricks, then you can develop it more on your own if you need specific functions.
Its amazing!
I didn't even know besiege responged so well to real life phisycs!
Great work.
also steering hinge can work with auto return on
Yeah it's usable now
Hum... How are you making your planes looks cool ?
Like the JU 87 V1
I have some timelapses of building planes, you might get insights from watching them
@@Dawn-Shade Oh thanks !
This biggest problem I'm having is that I can't seem to generate enough thrust to even get off the ground. I've followed your instructions to the dot (even some things you changed but didn't mention!) but haven't had much luck. Any help?
Thanks for the videos regardless.
Are you sure the thrust is strong enough, and the rotors are correctly contra-rotating?
@@Dawn-Shade I figured it out, I think. I wasn't paying enough attention to propeller angles, both on the wings and the rotor. At some point I'd rotated some propellers to be more vertical (whist still angled in the correct direction). I didn't realize this had such a profound effect on the aerodynamics, but to this game's credit, it does.
Now I'm having issues with my plane being unbalanced. It's just a minuscule amount leaning left, which is driving me crazy because I can't find anything unsymmetrical. Arrrgghhhh
That's just unity engine being unity.
When you add the control surface, the miniscule amount would be negligible
why wont the turn left right not work for me?
It's lift probably not strong enough
Is this voice acting really Shade?
I thought ur a guy
dunno if they modified the engine but I replicated this step by step and it doesn't even come close to lift-off
All the propeller Blades must have the same angle of attack
@@Dawn-Shade I did turn them all in the same direction as in the video, either way I found other designs that work
hmm, after the newest updates it seems the method you used to turn the wings just put too much tension on the air craft and the whole thing snaps in half, idk how to fix it
snaps in half? might be how you build the whole body. unless you copied this exact plane?
@Fashionable Bloodfallen
If you are talking about RCS they still work, you might have some accidental braces in the wrong place.
Very good tutorial!! I dont have besiege but im really interested on flying machines. Good work!
way too fucking fast
ah sorry about that. i just don't want to drag it too long, people on youtube got discouraged when they see an hour long tutorial.
but with youtube you can change the playback speed. i suggest set it to 0.75 if you are having difficulty following along. you can also pause or rewind section that you missed.
I have a problem that the vertical motions from the back steering mechanisms will barely turn my plane upwards, but works fine downwards. I even downloaded your complete version and it has the same problems. was there a recent update that makes this build outdated?
try the one i use in part 3 if you find the rear steering mechanism too weak
I have a problem my front propeller on contra rotating spin slower than the second i have make sure in connected with the starting block can you help
are those blades have same correct angles?
@@Dawn-Shade yes i test it without wing it fly straight with wing it bank left i think the problem is the wing I'll try to rebuild the aircraft
I'll try to build the plane using wing panel that appear when you explaining.. btw good vid I check out part 3
Just a little problem, my planes seems like to have a side that is in overweight (lol) but the COM don't show anything about that.
does the plane yaws or roll?
i stay 1 or 2 fucking hours to end this plane and is not working
dont gave up that easily. people spent averaging a week for a creation, and it's nothing compared to 2 hours.
what problem do you encounter?
You are pro
Great tutorial shade! I really need to learn how to build before multiplayer is out
show me how to make a tank so I can shot the plane out of the sky
I’m having issues with the torque once I move the rear prop to the front. The props do not spin at the same speed. In the time it takes the front prop (one connected to the start block) to complete 50% of its rotation the rear one has completed 125%. Pretty sure I’ve done everything as you have
they don't. as long as it doesn't spin the plane you're fine
Очень полезная серия гайдов. Интересно, что некоторые идеи можно применить и для наземных машин.
how dafuq do you steer a hinge?
Great tutorial, I really liked that you focused more on the concepts than a step-by-step guide!
I cannot understand why my plane is turning left and why I can't use the rudders
Sounds like your rudder doesn't generate enough drag
@@Dawn-Shade could you help me with this. Like maybe discord. I have besiege on xbox
@@thefoxxymilo sure. Check the link on the pinned comment. Please provide screenshot so that I can see what went wrong
@@Dawn-Shade I got you
It's not a mod maybe
is not
WHOAH! I didn't make an exact replica of your plane but dang! Beautiful.I had absolutely no idea how to make a plane in besiege (I bought it yesterday) but you just sped me right up!
im glad this helps :)
do i have to be some sort of warthunder avitation player to understand how it worK?
that helps but not necessarily
My plane keeps nose-diving
even though i did the stablizing method
can you show some pics?
Meant to comment this in the first part, how would I send you the pictures
@@cctv3438 see description. There's a discord link
Oh kk I don’t have any of those XD, I’ll just download your product, amazing video btw.
Hey, I was planning to resize the engine of a plane with Easy Scale+Build Tools mods, But I have a question: If I shrink the propeller blades, will that effect the engine's thrust significantly? Thanks! Loved the vid btw.
Yes, because linear velocity is determined by the radius
Thank you.
How do u you control the ailerons
With Left and right arrow keys?
Dawn-Shade nvm i hadnt set the pistons on correct keys
My swivel joint with the propellers doesn't spin at all.
you forgot to brace the joint with the starting block
Dawn-Shade No I didn't
Dawn-Shade Which is why I'm confused
show me a pic of it
Does not work
The screw is barely spinning
what screw?
How do you counter the angular momentum created by the starting block when it spins?
the rotor from starting block countered the first rotor so it neutralized each other
not on my plane, the damn thing keeps turning right. none the less I can finally build a plane
Thx for the awesome video
hi ! this is a very coll tutorial, but I have a problem with my plane, I have do excactly the same than you but, after the take off teh plane go the the left, I have verified the COM and it is good. I think that come from the engine (the wheels) but I don't know.
problem has been solved on discord.
hi, what was the solution? i seem to also be having this problem.
DaBigBoi omg, the problem doesn't have solution. But I invite you to go on the besiege community Discord, Shade and other persons will help you.
For some reason my swivel joints do not turn when my wheels turn so I used a unpowered wheel for the main rotor what should I use for the coaxial rotor?
looks like your swivel facing the wrong way.
you can't use unpowered wheel for a coaxial rotor, unless you use mods.
you so much I will try putting my swivel the other way.
Is that your real voive
Voice
she is a girl
Thank you! really great tutorial
Best tutorial I’ve ever seen well done!
What are the mods you use called?
TGYD building tools mod
Hi, can you help me? I can't put propellers on swivel joint like you do on 2:12. They just can't be put because of "intersection". What should i do?
Try this trick to bypass the intersection warning: gfycat.com/EvenValidCoati
Eror404( I mean i can put this popellers, but if I lunch the engine, propellers will just block/kick each other
+Иван Рубан can you send me pic?
I have somehow managed with this problem. Thank you for the help!
If I under v0.3 what should i use
Unpowered wheel that scaled down maybe ?
Owh it doesn't matter i just checked my besiege it v0.75
If i use "jet engine" at the back will it climb up
@@depressedbread6893 if you balance it properly, it should work fine
@@Dawn-Shade ok thanks
how do I make a rudder? thanks!
its just vertical elevator but without any propeller
by all means, it does not look like a sopwith camel :D
what does it look like? XD
It's not easy to build realistic looking aircraft without mods
Dawn-Shade jeah i know, for video purposes it looks good. I see the similaritys.
Even though I copied your videos, my plane doesn't take off ......
do you have pics?
Dawn-Shade No.. but same as your video...
have you tried to download my plane and compare it with yours?
Dawn-Shade how can I download?
There''s a link in the desc that says download final product. It will send you to steam workshop where you can subscribe to the item and get them to be downloaded straight away to the game

can you share me a screenshot of your plane? I cannot tell you without pictures itself
Ur awesomw
great video
It takes off and all, but It tends to quickly roll left in flight and It seems like It doesnt have enough power to sustain itself
I copied every thing that you Said and made, but It feels like It has a bit if more weight on the left
have you made the engine correctly? sounds like the torque hasn't been negated
I negated it
I even tried building a biplane, does the same thing
Well I cannot tell you without pictures or the .bsg itself
how do i install the mod??????????????????????????
by reading the description of this video carefully
Dawn-Shade ohh......ok......sorry for that..BTW Thx for the video..keep it up👍👍👍
