I agree,my favorite is that stained glass Wren going after the spider, how unexpectedly humorous! I am stunned at how much Roman history is in York, beautiful. The only church with a Roman connection that I visited was St Mary’s,in Beaumont,a few miles east of Carlisle. It originally burned down around maybe 1100 or something, and was rebuilt, using many bits of Hadrian’s wall. A lovely small modest church, with some of the most beautiful gravestones that I’ve ever seen.
That sounds like an interesting church in Beaumont. I shall remember that for future if I'm up that way! The Wren glass in the Minster is truly fantastic!
Someone doesn't think so well of me. Not permitted to walk the wall, and making it clear with "no dogs allowed" signs... Hehehe. I really am well trained, my wife spent years making sure of that. Interesting pace I've not had the chance to visit, and clearly oozing with the Ouse, and outstanding history. One thing in particular really stood out for me was that fabulous huge door. What with all that iron laced all over it mast of made it a sight to behold. My grandad, and my all time hero were experts with wood, and so I hold an interest in excellent craftsmanship in carpentry. vast amount of the most impressive pieces of in situ wood work can be found in churches and British castles. Some of the dining tables are breath taking. I very much enjoyed that. Either a longer, more in depth episode, or perhaps a mini series would have been even more appreciated, by me any way. As you did with Constantine, went into a bit more history behind him. Don't let me tell you what to do with your channel. What you do is working well. Must be off, a little dog is letting me know she hasn't been out yet. Take care ladies. See you soon.
Highly recommended Graham! It was Lucie’s first visit! So much to see I think a long weekend what give you enough time to enjoy all the sights! Haha I’m sure you’re well behaved 😝 Rob might be able to enlighten you on the door! It was superb! Yea it’s a fine balance sometimes with keeping the content easy to watch than going super heavy with the history. We could certainly look at doing a mini series in the future! Even for us the history of a place such as York is a lot to wrap your head around 😂🤎
I was at York Minster and at that Roman column just yesterday. I would love to peak into the past and observe The Romans during that time. Absolutely amazing.
Thanks, Ellie and Lucy (and Rob!), I loved this tour, you do such a great job researching and describing your featured stops. I hope you get to go back to the Treasurer's House and take a ghost tour, that would be marvelous wouldn't it? :-)
Thank you! We love delving into the research behind these places, you never know where the Roman History is hiding! Maybe a follow up ghost tour should be planned 👀🙌
This tour was amazing not often do you see these ancient buildings and all the details of the bricks. The details of the stained glass windows were stunning along with the paintings on the walls. You made it so we felt like we were following ahead or behind at times. I look forward to your next adventure soon I hope ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💜
Brilliant tour! What month did you go? The blooms are so pretty. Thank you so much for telling really compelling stories of history. I am really looking forward to your next Roman outing!
We went at the end of April! The flowers were gorgeous! All the colours reminded me of stain glass! Thank you for watching! Means a lot to have the nice feedback. The next tour is in the planning phase atm! 🤎
Found this video very insightful , very well spoken , Never had the chance to visit York as yet, Maybe oneday, and thank you for a wonderful Tour..... More
I've visited York back in 2006 and remember the walls, but so cool to see inside Yorkminster! My favourite bit was the soaring gothic windows (not Roman I know). Really appreciate all your efforts to make this video, and for introducing Rob as well 👍
Robs helped us unlock a new found appreciation for the incredible architecture hidden inside churches and cathedrals for sure and not just the roman bits! Glad we could show you round Katherine 🤓🙌
Oh my, this tour was wonderful!! I hope you know you could market these walking tours - tourists would love an outing like this. I’ve thought if I travel to Europe, I’d love to have a paid outing with a mudlarker or metal detectorist. Thank you so much for sharing your adventure with us.
Thank you Joanne glad you loved the tour they are always such a good time making them a very memorable day out for sure ❤️🙌 you’ll have to let us know if you’re ever in Europe!
Hello. I would love to contact you. I went to Scotland recently and discovered the beaches around North and South Queensferry as I had seen the Northern Mudlarks exploring that area. I found a few Victorian shards. I’ll keep watching your vlogs and when/if I come back maybe I can hire you for a short tour. Wishing you all the best!
Nice video, filmed in crisp detail and in a nice subdued 'grey' light (was that the weather or a film production effect?). When I last visited the Roman Bath pub, probably in the late 1990's, there was glass floor around the bar area and you could look straight down at the old Roman stonework - is the glass floor not there nowadays?
Thank you so much! We record most of our Tours during the week and are always surprised how busy it can be! Tourism is a fine balance it needs to be sustainable. 🙏
York Minster is not only the largest Church in York, but the largest Medieval Gothic Church north of the Alps, & contains more Medieval stained glass than that in all other English churches added together.
What about the remains beneath the Minster itself? Parts of the HQ building, including some painted plaster. The stone coffins in the Multangular Tower have come from the present Railway Station site.
!0 sided defences would of been a massive achievement ,Imagine 24 sided defences, would be a circle ;) 12 sided would of been the limit, Amazing video, please do some more thank you
Eboracum was the Capital of the Northern Province of Roman Britannia, that is Britannia Secunda, not the southern province. Roman soldiers of a Legion are known as 'Legionaries'. The term legionares refers only to members of the French Foreign Legion, of a much later age. Stonegate is called that because it was stone paved during the Medieval period, but originally all the Roman roads/streets in the Fortress would have been paved in the same way & at the same time. It may be that most of the other streets had become buried, or robbed of their stonework by the Medieval period, leaving Stonegate as one with original Roman paving.
You don’t get charged to pray, light a candle or join a service don’t worry! the admission fee is for those enjoying the Minster and goes towards the upkeep and running of such an impressive building 🤓
I beg your pardon? What exactly do you mean? Are you merely an aetheist bigot, who has supported the slaughter of over 200 million people in the last century alone, under aetheism? More than all the combined religious wars in history! Sounds like it. That makes you ignorant, arrogant and bigoted. You really shouldn't be throwing stones, my dear!

Try Hexham Cathedral at the other end of Hadrian's Wall, also cannibalised from the wall
York used to trade with other Roman colony's in the Baltic sea.
Such an important strategic location! 🤓

Hope you had a lovely visit! It’s amazing so much is still visible to see around the city. We second that! To be a fly on the wall! 😂
@@RomanFound Yes, it was amazing thank you. Very true, there are loads of hidden gems around the place. Ha, to be an ancient fly on a Roman wall. 😂

Even Constantaine knew by the time, Churches were thriving for a reason
In my opinion this was the best video I've seen about York but like many other places York is becoming almost too crowded by tourist.

looks like its a trip back to all saints ,
YES! Do it! 🤓
Can't believe they charge to get into the minster. Hope they don't charge the worshipers on a Sunday lol
