Les genres musicaux ? Très peu pour eux. Les inclassables @young_fathers sont dans Echoes with Jehnny Beth pour nous présenter leur nouvel album Heavy Heavy.
Google considère leur musique comme du Hip-Hop, Wikipédia comme de l’électro, d’autres comme du rock indé. À vrai dire, tous ont autant raison que tort car c’est hors des cases dans lesquelles on voudrait la catégoriser que se situe la musique de Young Fathers.
Instinctive, brute, viscérale, vitale seraient de meilleurs qualificatif de l’oeuvre du trio d’Edimbourg qui a débarqué sans prévenir dans le paysage musical britannique en 2013 avec son premier album Dead. Une déclaration d’intention musicale qui leur vaudra un Mercury Prize (récompensant le meilleur album britannique de l’année) et une place à part dans la scène musicale d’Outre-Manche.
Pas de quoi faire délocaliser le groupe qui, à contre-courant de ceux qui partent pour Londres au premier succès, est toujours basé à Edimbourg avec la ferme intention de mener la scène locale vers les sommets. Et force est de constater qu’avec une BO pour Trainspotting 2, une signature chez les inévitables défricheurs sonores de Ninja Tune et quatre albums secouant tous à leur manière le cocotier du rock UK, Young Fathers a définitivement remis Edimbourg et plus globalement l’Écosse sur la carte du rock UK.
Avec Heavy Heavy, nouvel album sorti en 2023, le trio frappe une fois de plus là où on ne l’attend pas. Un album qu’ils viennent interpréter en live dans Echoes with Jehnny Beth avec une performance qui fera date dans l’histoire de l’émission.

First saw them 7 years ago supporting Paul Weller . First saw Paul Weller with The Jam in 78. Followed him ever since . Yet Young Fathers made more of an impression and still do to this day . Absolutely amazing band , so under the radar . So the best awe inspiring live band anywhere. Everyone should know them , love them.
Utter respect my friend. I saw YF back in March. I’ve seen The Who, Radiohead, OCS, BB King and others (forget who…) but the Fathers gig at the O2 was the most intense live performance I’ve seen. An absolutely incredible group. They continue to dodge and dive between genres and styles and I love them for it.
