I’m not even finished with my Mt. Whitney hike and I’m already motivated by your video to start my research to summit Mt. Shasta. Awesome short film on your journey. The video quality is great along with the pictures. I’ve watched it almost a dozen times in the past two days. Lol Congratulations to the both of you!
This was our first mountaineering experience so I can offer some feedback. We took the Helen Lake route. Make sure to get an early start. One mistake we made was not having enough sun protection. You can see in the video we ended up using shirts/rags haha. Get a good hat, some 100 spf, and glacier glasses to protect your eyes. Up to Helen Lake is pretty much just a slog. Make sure you have a stove to melt snow for water. Id recommend a jet boil, wind burner, or reactor. Go uphill from the campsite to gather snow (we used a grocery bag and just carried it back to camp to melt). Many people were gathering snow from around the restroom area lol. Yuck. You may want to bring a shovel too. Nuun tablets help with hydration. Get an early start when you head to summit the next morning..we left around midnight or so. Only saw 1 group roped up. Misery ridge was pretty tough but its the final stretch. Be safe and bring pants to glissade on the way down (just make sure its in a safe area). I think that covers some of the basics? Let me know if you have any specific questions....glad to help. -Ben
I just saw that video! It was really well done! I also wanted to ask you (since you've done both mountains) about Rainer vs Shasta in difficulty. I've done Shasta twice before and made it to the top of Misery Hill (had to turn around because of high winds). How does Rainier compare to Shasta? Thanks, and keep up your videos!
Sorry for the late reply! I would say Rainier is a lot more difficult. It is definitely more technical and you will need rope, a harness, and must understand crevasse rescue. There is also a higher risk of rock and ice fall from above. Best of luck! -Ben @@arjunski
HA! When you say that the views are spectacular, and tell the viewers to check them out, yet you decide to be in the middle of the shot.....Yeah, priceless....
Made it to the summit with my son last week. I'm 59. First mountaineering experience. Wow, loved it
Leslie Hall amazing! Congrats to both you and your son!!

What month is this?
May of 2018
How hard is it to claim to the top???
lordiker tty it is a slog but it is non technical. It is definitely tough. Just make sure you are prepared with crampons and an ice axe.
