    major respect for the annabeth defense. This was Rick’s decision as the literal AUTHOR. He knows these characters better than any of us do. She’s also a perfect Annabeth in my opinion, her acting in this episode specifically really shined. i can see what Rick was saying about the chemistry with the 3 kids together, the scene of Grover confronting them made me cry.

      I can't believe some people are mad because Annabeth is black. Rick had to defend her already before the show aired because people were so upset. Clearly he made the right choice for her. He knows his own characters better than anyone.

      I love her portrayal of Annabeth. People are forgetting book 1 Annabeth is different than later books Annabeth. I’m fine with her being that way. I think she’s more standoffish or colder than the book, which I’m cool with. It’s an obvious reason why but don’t want to spoil. Now the only critique would be some of her lines are not the best but she’s doing well and I like her character

    • @TheMoonRover
      @TheMoonRover 7 месяцев назад +12

      Yeah. I wasn't convinced by her in episode 2, but I see now that was the direction to make Annabeth a bit more distant and calculating that she was in the book, which honestly makes a lot of sense. They're making changes from the books, but it's all in the name of the character dynamics, and the kids successfully pull that off.

    All three of the kids fully sold me on their casting by this episode. There were some awkward moments but that's to be expected from kid actors - honestly it felt more like a directing issue than anything else. Overall I thought they carried the ep really well considering this was very heavy on the character work and that's not easy to pull off even for adult actors. I love that the show seems to be putting more emphasis on how the demigods feel neglected by their parents, that's going to be extremely important later on in the season but I won't say more due to spoilers

      i just commented something similar on the last episode. The literal only thing that has me caught up at all about this show is the " You drool when you sleep" line. The cinematography made me feel weird and her line delivery sounded ridiculously flat and rehearsed. She has done a great job on this but when i hear it i twitch because it is so bad. Other than that, I am in love with all the changes as they all make so much sense overall.

    Heroes of Olympus, books 1-5 (Percy is 16. Published 2010-14)

      The main relevancy of Annabeth's blond hair was that her intelligence wasn't taken seriously because of the way she looked - she suffered because of the "dumb blonde" stereotype. Not being taken seriously or not being thought of as smart is an experience a lot of black girls and women (and black people in general) can sadly relate to. So, in my opinion, the casting works even with the looks specific characterization in mind!!

    Honestly, I don't think they can avoid the actors out-aging their characters. TV shows take time to produce and they'd essentially have to do four more seasons in four years. And they haven't even been _renewed_ yet, let alone started production on season 2. Maybe, if they get the greenlight for 2 seasons at once, they could shoot it all as soon as possible and then leave the postproduction for season three until after season 2's out, but how likely is that?
    But I'm not _that_ bothered by it tbh. The _intention_ to have an age accurate cast was at least there.

  • @theanyktos

    If I'm not mistaken Chalice of the Gods (the first book in the new trilogy) is set after Heroes of Olympus, but before (or perhaps concurrently with?) the Magnus Chase books.
    SPOILERS for the The Last Olympian & Heroes of Olympus
    The battle of Manhatten takes place on Percy's 16th birthday and Son of Neptune starts about a half a year after that. I believe the whole Heroes of Olympus series takes place over (what would've been) Percy's junior year.
    And Chalice of the Gods starts at the start of Percy's senior year.

    I am ashamed to admit that I initially had my doubts about the casting of Leah Jeffries. I was worried that if Disney made this change, what other changes would they make to this show in the interest of their agenda. It lasted all of a few seconds. I learned Rick was involved, and I was contented with that, and I was dead wrong. She is a phenomenal actress alongside two other phenomenal actors, and I'm very proud to have her as my Annabeth Chase, and I apologize for my poor attitude.

    There is literally only one line that Leah has said that I didn't jive with her delivery of and that was "she fought valiantly and met a heroes fate" and I think that was just because she had to play it so super straight to allow Percy's pinecone joke to land. Its even hard to play the straight man for adults sometimes, let alone kids. She is doing great! All 3 of them are!

    • @heyitsmira17
      @heyitsmira17 7 месяцев назад +1

      That's always gonna be the truth about books vs any other media, because books require the lowest cost of time and money (using only words) and can give almost limitless expansion of stories. (An example of that is Rick making Percy jump from a place that wouldn't be possible irl because it'd mean he'd fall right on the cement and not the sea. He thought the water was right under it and didn't fact-check, so in the written books we can just pretend that it is somehow possible, but for both comic books and the series in which they must show the place visually, it's just not possible and they'll have to find another way to "fix" this book mistake)
      Movies and TV shows have limited budget, live action or not, and can never give us all of the thoughts books give. Even comic book adaptations have its restraints. So I just wish people could enjoy adaptations, as you said, for what they are, on their own right, bc comparing it to books will never be fair. The PJO movies were trash on their own right, due to its own flaws, and the show is doing a good job on its own right as well.

      @@manshaansarim-2388 I'm well aware of that, I just don't think it's reasonable to expect such things from adaptations to another media. Idc about the changes bc imo they're not changing the core aspects, and I care especially less due to Rick and Becky being so involved and constantly mentioning why they decided to change this and that. It's all very reasonable.
