Awesome video! i’m 16 and run xc and track, i have literally not stopped listening to the podcast since i discovered it (aka my parents are annoyed i won’t shut up about it) and i would just like to tell you how much you and megan have pulled me through bad moments in training and even just in school in general. i turn to the podcast in any mood, at any point of the day, whether i have had a good workout, a bad one, or even just a bad mental day. after facing bad coaching and the comparison that comes with being human the podcast always brings me back to what is important: the love, gratitude, and appreciation of those around me and what i have accomplished. thank you so much for all you have done for me and i can’t wait to see you crush western states! GO FOR THOSE BIG DREAMS AND KILIAN BETTER BE SCARED, HUZZAH!
We are so damn proud of you. High school can be so hard (it was hard for both of us), and the way you are navigating that journey is inspiring to us. Just know that no matter what, it gets better, and the future is SO BRIGHT! Keep us updated ahead!
Thanks David. 65 year old fan girl here. Just wanted to say you really are a top bloke ! Have used your free ultra programmes for awhile now with great success…love them. But thanks to you and Megan , really upped my previously fucked up fuelling regime, and what a game changer , even for this older, slower gal . I’ve also been inspired to stop being so half arsed about scheduled faster sessions as well. Your willingness to share with us mere mortals the workings of the inner sanctum is truly selfless and so very appreciated. Looking forward to travelling the path to Western States with you guys. Go well. Cheers
I am not an ultra athlete nor do I have aspirations to be. But I learned about you from watching other channels where I was trying to learn to just run casually for my overall health- starting at 55 yo and a history of HATING running. I love your story of “coaching someone when you never ran an ultra means you are unqualified.” Such nonsense. I usually don’t comment on videos but I just wanted you guys to know that your impact is beyond the small community you believe you are impacting. Thank you for all you do and keep posting videos! They are more valuable than you know.👍
This means so much to us, thank you! Your start at 55 is one of the most inspiring things I have ever heard. I am going to channel that energy into everything I do ahead!!! YOU ROCK!
Awesome episode. Loving the podcast as well. FYI, you lapped me at Jackass ON LOOP 2!! LOL! Heat got to me, DNFd but still had a great time watching 2 friends finish. I look forward to more episodes of this and the podcast.
Fun episode guys! I'm in the Leadville 100 this year and after watching this and other podcasts with Roche, I've decided to go all-in on breaking your record David. I've already been stretching out my stomach for 55 years (I mean "GI training") and I've nailed that 12-min/mile (or more) warm-up/cool down. I think when I add the nose strip and some super shoes, I've got this!! :) Seriously, it'll be my first 100 and I am a fellow biology geek and really love getting into the science of anything that'll help. Great stuff
Hopefully Allie doesn't issue a copyright claim haha! She inspires me so much and I watch her videos on every uphill treadmill session to get motivated. It's so cool when an athlete I coach and friend can also be one of my ultimate life inspirations!
I discovered your content and podcast in 2022, and since then, your content has continued to motivate and inspire me. Your mindset and positivity have fueled a journey of self love that has transformed my life, and your training plans and insights have led me to achieve goals I never thought possible. It's been an absolute pleasure to watch you take off, and I can't wait to see you crush it at Western States this year!
Really connected with your attitude towards racing and using love as your key to success. Being able to compete is a gift and being healthy enough to express the love you have for those around you and the sport of running is no small thing. I'm a personal trainer/endurance coach and am always grateful for the opportunity to share my love for sport and foster that same love in those I work with as well as the people that are close to me. Props to you for making the best of training with the stressors, I find myself doing much the same between my work schedule and personal training pursuits. Good luck in your build!
Love the podcast, long time listener. So happy you’ve decided to record this journey and post it for us to follow along. Excited to see the growth. I’ll be mimicking the workouts(best I can) hoping for some growth of my own.
Hi David, your videos, comments, and observations about running have made me improve my running over the years. I watched them without knowing the caliber of athlete that you are, I only knew how great of a coach you were. I was born in Spain and I am a big Killian supporter, but in this year's WS I will be rooting for you. Let's go David!
Oh my gosh this means so much to me. THANK YOU! It's ok to root for Kilian though--he is one of my heroes and favorite athletes in any sport. I appreciate you so much
So proud of you for your parenting journey!! I think the main thing Megan and I tell each other is that we want to model for the kids that it's meaningful to chase any goal, whether in running or something else!
David, this video is fantastic and the cinematography is beautiful. I’m so here for this! Sending love and awesomeness your way, thank you for the information and inspiration you utter gem.
Hands down the most inspiring family out there today. I've learnt so much from your podcasts and videos recently. Keep on sharing love and hope❤️🔥You make such a difference in the world.
Let's go! Great energy David. Your example and your emphasis on 15 years of aerobic base building really helps somebody like me who doesn't get instant results from running. Realistic expectations, gets me excited for the next 15 years. Good luck
David, I've been in several sports for 30 years, and I can tell you 37 is often a peak performance year - I've seen it repeatedly - and the year Dads have kids often are peak performance years. You got this! Just remember Mark Allen's words "Undertrain and over prepare" - I think that lines up sort of with your philosophy.
Just found the podcast and am bingeing it all through my first marathon prep. The podacast is amazing that this video/vlog adds so much to it for me. Thank you both for all you do!
Appreciate the play by play! I can't wait for the next one and thanks for taking us along with you! "Lion"el would be so proud! Now you and Megan can cuddle and watch your videos too!!
Absolutely incredible. Shooters shoot! Call the shot and let the chips fall where they may. Thank you for taking us along on the journey. Excited to see you chase your dream.
HECK YES!!! You will never land the vault unless you first think you are going to land the vault. I might have to lie to myself a bit to get there :) THANK YOU!
"That's gross; we're not using that." 🤣 I love how "normal" y'all make this type of training appear -- usually the pros seem too specialized to emulate, but you guys are nailing the inspiration zone every time! Keep it up!
My brain literally cannot compute this. I've never run under 6min/mi... even on a smooth flat downhill going as fast as I possibly could. I'm just dumbfounded. It's cracking my brain.
Ever since I heard David with Rich Roll I’ve been binge listening SWAP pod episodes. I’m an older cyclist, took David up on his offer to email him for HRZone chat to pinpoint my Z2. Super responsive and down to Earth. I’ve been able to glean a ton of info from David and Megan. Super inspiring. Huzzah! Is right. Thank you! (Watersconstr)
Currently building up over the next year for my first ultra next January. First learned about you through another short film and love your mentality. I love to see how you navigate being a father and training. Thank for sharing that part of your story as it is an inspiration for me that I can pull this thing off with a two year old of my own. Congrats on little Ollie and will be following your journey!
Absolutely love this David, definitely my #1 Freetrail pick for Western States! Also incredible video by Cody Bare and loved the format. So freaking cool!
David is not a man, he's a freaking machine. Watching him crush these training paces saying "thinking about Killian" was actually chilling. I'm training for my first 50k at ridiculously slow paces, but I am still doing training blocks with VO2 max intervals at 7:30 pace. I wish you luck destroying the competition at WSER and this is great motivation to follow along during my own journey.
I just want to add how awesome David and Megan are. About two years ago, I had some big changes in my life. Those changes led me to embrace running as a way to get healthy. I will never forget my first run -- a 1/4 of a mile in tennis shoes with me throwing up at some point. I started reading the Happy Runner and emailed David and Megan to thank them for the inspiration. Since then, I have reached the point where my training runs are 8 to 10 mile runs with sub 7 minute average mile times. My mile PR is faster than it was as a teenager. The unimaginable to me 2 years ago -- 20+ mile training runs -- have proven to be a normal thing I do on Saturdays. I am even now training for my first ultras. I mention all of that for a few reasons. First, David and Megan inspired me and I guarantee I am not the only one. Thanks guys. Second, what David is doing, we each -- in our own way -- have the capacity to do things we thought wasn't possible. You just have to dream and then take the steps towards that goal. Third, and lastly, the training is the journey and also the lifestyle. Embracing the work is an awesome feeling and can change you in ways that you may have never considered. I wish all of you a wonderful 2025.
@@MountainRoche Dude, thank you for kicking butt and inspiring me and others! Love, to me, is the merger of admiration and consideration. If that is right, then there is nothing but love from me and many runners for what you and Megan (and the kids and the dog) are doing. All the best in 2025, and keep showing us that hard work, some science, and love can bring out the best in all of us. Oh, and this is a great reminder that I need to get a bucket hat!
amazing stuff. Thank you for sharing your journey and being so honest and open about your training. Your steady zone 2 running looks so fast already but seeing you at the intervals is just pure insanity. Cheering for you and your young family. You guys rock!!!❤
I’ve been SO excited for this! David, you and Megan and SWAP have become my absolute idols in the past few months as I’ve began to get really into the running/trail running scene. I am PUMPED following along yer journey and am roaring for you shooting your shot!! Absolute legends your whole team of Megan Leo Ollie and Cody here (plus everyone who loves you guys!)WOOHOO AND HUZZAHHH
@ I am very much opposite. I could run in shorts even if it is bitter cold. I first have to really bundle up on top before the long pants come on. Plus running in compression running shorts allows me to remove the pants wants it gets too hot. But man this video is so hot that I had to take my pants ….
Yay I love this so much. I’m excited to follow along. Thank you Roche family and Cody for this cool new series. And congratulations on the new addition to your family, David and Megan! Shooters shoot!
I'm on week 7 of the 100 Mile Breakthrough Plan and OoOoh, I can already see that I need to make some tweaks to how I'm doing your workouts. This is so cool to see (literally, I've wondered what your neighborhood was like😂). Thanks so much for all you do. Huzzah!
Thank you so much Sam! Cody is the brains behind everything--just so impressed with how he has shot his shot this year as a photographer and now videographer. Inspiring as heck!
Great job David and Cody. Thanks for taking us into your training and your life. Talk about "no secrets" though...feels like you're giving it all away.
Happy to see you try new exciting things for the sport. I still remember those ginger runner episodes back in 2010s like it was yesterday and still have your book on my shelf. Absolutely love how ultra running has still so much potential as it is relatively new sport. I am reminded of Barkley Marathons and how the guy who won it the most times is engineer and somehow nerded out the formula that works. Tinkering is the pure essence of running and road racing lost that bit a little. This tinkering “apRoche” might work! Fingers crossed David!
David and Megan, to be honest, you are my inspiration in the last couple of months, it is so great, that you are sharing your knowledge and love with us. Thank you!❤
I loved this video saw you post it in patron and clicked so fast cause I I’ve heard yall talking about it and it was an amazing video 🎉 can’t wait for the next one!!
That was pretty darn good!! Selfishly, I am excited to see your training in action as I am definitely a visual learner. Even though I have heard you talk about the stuff you did, it now clicks better than ever before. I am so excited for episode 2!!🎉🎉
I ran the fastest times of my life from mile to half marathon last year and our son is a little bit younger than Theo. Thanks for the inspiration that getting faster in your 30's with other life stressors and more important obligations is possible.
Most workout videos have an athlete warming up in trainers before annoyingly changing into super shoes for the workout. I love that you wore yours for the entire workout, including ankle weight time
Frankly starting in heavy old trainers then switching out would do the same thing David was aiming for, making thre workout portion "feel" lighter and peppier.
Freaking love you and your family so much man. Between your info/stoke and TJs direction at Microcosm, I to hope to shock the world (or atleast myself) this year at the Elm Creek Backyard Ultra . Thank you for being such a down to earth inspiration.
Congratulations David, Megan and Leo on the birth of Ollie. Oh, and I love your videos, David. Such interesting stuff to consider (after I recover from a recent hip replacement!).
I have to believe that George Sheehan who preached to all runners back in the 1970s that "we are all an experiment of one" would love you and Megan. I don't think there is anyone out there right now that is pushing the envelope more on running and training theory than the two of you. You have a knack for taking in all the scientific stuff of the research world and tweaking it for making it best for you. Besides that, you are redefining how to train as an ultra runner by welcoming in the world of speed from the mile through 5K. I'd really like to see what you could do in the mile, 5K, 10K and half marathon races as you get ready for Western States. You might be the most all around runner there is. All the best to you, Megan, Addie Dog, Leo, and Ollie.
This is so cool of you to say, thank you!! Our hope is to share it all, and whatever works can hopefully help other people (and whatever doesn't can be a cautionary tale haha). I might do some faster races in the build for videos!
Beautiful episode, loved it! Wondering if the gel is enough to protect the bicarb from the stomach acids. The Maurten scientists (and Killian) must be shaking their heads at this LOL
Thanks for sharing this David. Please continue with this. It's an awesome content to follow along the latest and greatest amazing athletic things happening in the world. It's very inspiring. I feel ready to go out for some 6x3min full gas :)

HUZZAH! You are so great Jeff, thank you!
Great video! You were absolutely flying through that workout. Looking forward to the next one
SHOOT THAT SHOT! You are the best Cody! Filming it today!
Yessss David !!! So excited to watch you crush. Keep it coming!
Heck yes! Thank you so much for watching and supporting!
This is exciting. Looking forward to following your journey. Rooting for you!
Thank you so so much!!! You are amazing Paul!
Huzzah!
You are so strong!!!!! THANK YOU! Don't overdo it on the workouts, most of the growth just comes from the background easy work!
Got it, thank you for the answer as I know I wasn’t the only one wondering the same things.
David, you got this. We are all here to support you. Huzzahh!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! That support means the world to me, and I need it!
That was awesome! Great work David & Cody!!
Thank you so much for watching! We appreciate you a ton!
Cheering you on, David!! You got this…and then some!!!
You are so wonderful! THANK YOU!
So good! This content is gonna crush. Congrats to Cody as well!
Way more secrets to come! Thank you so much for watching!
It's cool to see this training video after listening to so many hours of the podcast on my runs
This is so cool, thank you
"Being a parent takes love out of your soul and brings it right to your finger tips, so you can sprinkle it on everything - including running."
YOU ARE THE BEST!
You are so freaking awesome!! THANK YOU!!! I actually coach John Kelly haha!
Such a great workout and amazing insights throughout!! Congratulations on the arrival of Ollie!! ❤🎉
THANK YOU SO MUCH! Filming the next workout tomorrow!
Thank you for bringing us along! Much love and gratitude!
You are such a boss Justin! Thank you!
Unbelievable workout. My jaw was on the floor. So inspiring!
THANK YOU!!!!! You are so wonderful!
@@MountainRoche I think you can definitely beat Killian! Finishing at sub 4 pace this workout, incredible, good luck at Western!
You're the Dani Rojas of Ultra running. Running is life! xD
hahahaha I want to be the Jamie Tartt though!!!
What a cool video and insights!! Cheers from Spain
We love Spain so much! You are awesome!!!
David and Megan, to be honest, you are my inspiration in the last couple of months, it is so great, that you are sharing your knowledge and love with us. Thank you!❤
You are so terrific. It's an honor to be a part of your journey!
At 45 I'm feeling injured just thinking about those ankle weights!
haha I definitely don't recommend that to anyone! You rock!
I loved this video saw you post it in patron and clicked so fast cause I I’ve heard yall talking about it and it was an amazing video 🎉 can’t wait for the next one!!
You are the best Mia! THANK YOU!
Very nice. Thanks for taking us along on the journey
You are amazing!!!! Really appreciate you watching!
Loved this!! Thanks for taking us along on this epic journey!!
You are so awesome! We are hoping to share the low points too!
Such an awesome video!!🫶🫶
THANK YOU! Director Cody is SO GOOD!
Yes, so excited for the upcoming videos!!😍
That was pretty darn good!! Selfishly, I am excited to see your training in action as I am definitely a visual learner. Even though I have heard you talk about the stuff you did, it now clicks better than ever before. I am so excited for episode 2!!🎉🎉
Heck yes! Thank you! We are filming episode 2 tomorrow!
Congratulations on the new arrival guys!
THANK YOU!!! Training with newborn is even better for ultras haha
So good, more vids like this soon!
YES! We filmed episode 2 today!
I ran the fastest times of my life from mile to half marathon last year and our son is a little bit younger than Theo. Thanks for the inspiration that getting faster in your 30's with other life stressors and more important obligations is possible.
Oh my gosh you are a SUPERDAD! Thank YOU for that inspiration. I figure that some sleep deprivation and background fatigue is good for ultras!
Probably, but I wouldn't enjoy that as much as I enjoy the ridiculousness of the ankle weights + alphaflys
@@traviskruger2263 hahahaha I am a MAN OF THE PEOPLE!!!! I can't wait for you to see the other weird crap I do haha
I would bet there is an internal rotation limitation on your left hip David! Greetings from Greece!! Keep inspiring us!!!
You are brilliant! Yes, I have torn hip labrums, with my left side almost needing surgery back in 2012. You're a physical psychic!
Fancy being able to run from your house, do a fast session and not see any cars at all. If I tried it, I'd get knocked down.
It's so fortunate! We often see more llamas than cars!
Freaking love you and your family so much man. Between your info/stoke and TJs direction at Microcosm, I to hope to shock the world (or atleast myself) this year at the Elm Creek Backyard Ultra . Thank you for being such a down to earth inspiration.
Elm Creek is GOING DOWN!!! You freaking got this. Thank you!
Not sure if this was intentional, but today is Chase Your Dreams Day. Chase them down, with LOVE and HUZAHH!!
hahahah let's make every day CHASE YOUR DREAMS DAY :) Thank you!!!
Congratulations David, Megan and Leo on the birth of Ollie. Oh, and I love your videos, David. Such interesting stuff to consider (after I recover from a recent hip replacement!).
So proud of you for the hard journey of healing! Hip replacements are so good nowadays and the future is so bright. THANK YOU!
The Maurten scientists (and Killian) must be shaking their heads at this LOL
hahaha I still have to buy a lot of the stuff, so I'm spreading it out :)
Thanks for sharing this David. Please continue with this. It's an awesome content to follow along the latest and greatest amazing athletic things happening in the world. It's very inspiring. I feel ready to go out for some 6x3min full gas :)
Oh heck yes! you are so amazing!!! We are filming episode 2 today!
Congratulations on the birth of your child.
THANK YOU! Ollie will feature a lot in Episode 2!
Very cool to see what you talk about on your podcast how it looks like in real life. :) Cody did a really great job documenting it!
You are a boss! Thank you, that is super cool feedback about the things to show in the future!
We love you all! Go and Huzzah this western states to spread love!
You are the damn best!
Very excited for this journey.
You are so great, thank you for following along!
Enjoyed this, thanks David!
You are so wonderful Connor! THANK YOU for watching!
