I really like what Peragus is trying to do actually, Exile feels a lot more grounded and feels like a warbroken veteran than some plucky hero due to that establishment in Peragus.
So glad you said something about the lack of combat barks for KOTOR 1. Now I know never to play the Switch version. I couldn’t imagine the game without those.
He’s not joking. Flurry is THE optimal feat for light-side characters. I actually did the math on optimal builds for each alignment, and the optimal light-side build is all about stacking “extra attack” effects. Master flurry gives you an extra attack with no downsides, two-weapon fighting makes dual-wielding hit more often, force/knight/master speed gives 2 free extra attacks at the highest tier, and the juyo lightsaber form gives you an extra attack at the cost of defense. That’s 6 attacks total in a single turn, and with your protagonist’s custom lightsaber crystal and a few EXTREMELY effective upgrades for your lightsaber, each attack does significant damage in its own right. Get the finesse feat early on, and you can put basically all of your points into dexterity. Pick the Jedi Weaponmaster prestige class when it becomes available and you get some more passive feats that improve damage and accuracy with lightsabers. Whenever you get force powers, stack self-buffs. Viola, now you do mega-uber-ultra damage and are completely unkillable. Have fun. If anyone’s curious, the optimal dark side build is all about the force lightning. Start as a Jedi Consular and go into Sith Lord once it becomes available. Get the “battle precognition” ability which adds your wisdom bonus to defense, and put basically all your stat points into wisdom. Given that wisdom’s basic function is to make your force powers harder to save against and increase FP on level-up, you will basically have UNLIMITED POWER!!! (Note: dark side characters don’t have access to the same kinds of buffs that light-side characters do, so you will never be quite as tanky) Use the “force form” that increases damage of force powers by 50%, but increases the cost by and additional 50% FP. The extra cost doesn’t really matter, because you have UNLIMITED POWER!!! from your high wisdom score. I found myself doing triple-digit damage in a huge AOE surprisingly early in the game. Oh, and tip for the newbies: for the protagonist, sink all the points you can into persuade and awareness, as these open up the most conversation options. Your teammates (particularly Bao-dur and T3-M4, as they have the highest base intelligence and therefore skill points) can handle basically any skill-check you need them to, with the exception of conversational ones. Strictly speaking, every skill has conversation options associated with it, but awareness has the most (with repair and computer use being a distant second and third) and persuade is ONLY available to the protagonist.
I wish you got a lightsaber earlier. I think finding one on the Ebon Hawk (Revan's?) Directly after Peragus would have been perfect. I also loved Peragus.

I know most people will hate this but the first KOTOR was even better on mobile, graphics were fantastic, and it had full controller support. The ideal way to play though would be on something like one of the larger iPad models, or on a phone if you have one of those controllers like the Razer Kishi or Backbone.
Nintendo needs to get its act together still, no sale) heavy sale games, over priced items, low quality games being allowed, old games no heavy sales. Steam is allowing 2+ dollars for both KOTOR games.
How does this make you feel about the remake being made by the sake studio? Especially when given the rumor about Microsoft originally turning down the remake due to the developer behind it.
It annoys me that nobody ever addresses the dialogue text size. The PC version of KOTOR 2 has tiny text when you run the game at modern resolutions, and there is nothing you can do to change it. There aren't any mods to address it because the text is hard coded. Interestingly, on the iPad version from a couple years ago, they bypassed this by putting in a completely new text system (text was blue and looked completely different). In the Switch version, they actually made the original text system look normal at modern resolutions for the first time in the game's history. It's a shame the Switch version has so many issues, because the text size alone is a non-starter for me on PC.
Thank you for answering my question of whether or not to buy this. That sound is horrible, and I don't like that they removed audio from the first game. Guess I'll buy Legend of Mana or something instead for my retro RPG on the go.
Great review Matty, thanks for the info! Am I going crazy here or is a Lo-Fi version of the Restored Jedi Temple Song playing in the background of this video? Awesome!
I enjoyed Knights of the Old Republic 2 but honestly it’s not my favorite Star Wars game. The gameplay is good but the story itself was a bit confusing and a bit glitchy(especially the ending). Also for some odd reason my PC version would not give me the scene with Bastila(and yet I picked all the dialogue choices that involved Revan being on the light side). The first one is better and less confusing. I really hope the remastered version that comes out next year will be great. Not doing a pre-order though lol 😆
it's a full remake from the ground up not a remaster not to get things confused, so it's gonna be totally different combat and gameplay but we'll just have to see how it turns out
You're not alone. I loved the hell out of KOTOR, I was obsessed with it. KOTOR 2 came along and I was so turned off by the tone change. I get that some people like that, but it was a real slog for me. My son OTOH loves it, so to each his own.
While there’s no mod to get a lightsaber right off the bat, the “Cheat Menu” from KOTOR 1 on Switch makes a return in this one so you can always just “Cheat” a lightsaber into your inventory. I think there’s also “Stage Select” that I’ve been to afraid to tinker with but I think it may even let you skip Peragus with it. I’ve been loving the portability of the Switch port. Sure, the PC version gets you a lot more, but I can’t play the PC version laying in bed with my sleeping wife or at my In-Laws house lol.
@@SkorpionSSs I have, unfortunately, having just recently talked my wife into letting me get a Switch, and already having an aging Xbox One, there’s absolutely, positively no way I’ll be able to talk her into another console. That being said, Steam Deck would likely be a solid pick for a portable KOTOR2 if someone already has one or it’s in their budget! I hadn’t thought of that!
Hey Matty, great review of the port and such, figured I would just swoop in with a few of my own points and (potential) corrections or explinations on some of the points that were brought up in the video. Between Kotor 1 and 2, I have personally sunk a lot more hours into Kotor 2 over my nearly 20 years with the game (just on Steam alone I have 950 hours clocked in, not including my time on the original Xbox, and the Mobile Port from two years back), so hopefully I can swoop in with a few interesting points or clarifications to my own knowlege--not to say my knowledge is by any means perfect, but here goes! Firstly excellent point on this being basically a port of the original xbox version. As you said Kotor 2 was developed in just a little over a years time (if I am remembering correctly, it was about 14 months), and the game is notoriously known for being both buggy and unfinished because of this--It is definitely not uncommon for new bugs or issues to arrise in a porting process for a game, so I am definitely not surprised (albeit a little dissapointed nonetheless) to hear that not only are pre-existing bugs still in the game from back in 2004, but also new bugs as well. Here's hoping Aspyr does come out with a patch to resolve most, or at least some of the issues. As for the point you made in regards to the ambient buzzing noise. that is something that has always been present in Kotor 2, however based on the audio clip you gave of it, it does DEFINITELY sound like it is maybe about 20 - 30% louder than it normally is. As somebody who's played the game a lot, I didn't really question hearing that noise, but I can defintiely notice it's at least louder than it normally is. Now, the dialogue skipping--this has ALWAYs existed in Kotor 2, or at least as far back as I can remember, it has definitely always been a problem on the PC version (I admittedly haven't played the Xbox version in a **long** time now, part of me doesn't remember it being an issue on the Xbox version, but maybe I'm just remembering that wrong). So to my knowledge or at least how it had been explained to me on the obsidian forums a while back is that it's likely been pinpointed down as a Memory Leak issue with the game. The longer you are playing in a single session, the more likely the dialogue skipping is to occur, and the best solution I have experience is basically just saving decently frequently--like definitely save before any kind of important dialogue, and exit out and reload the game like every 1 - 2 hours or so. I would imaaagine this would also work for the Switch port, but I can't say for certain. Either way, it is definitely an annoying bug, but one that has been present in Kotor 2 for some time nonetheless. Side note from the actual points or criticisms of your review but I am definitely on the same level of mindset as you are on Peragus. I *get* that people find it slow and monotonous compared to something like Taris in Kotor 1... but honestly going back into Peragus with a fresh mind and actually seeing how dark and foreboding it is.. I don't know, I just love the writing, vibes and mystery of Peragus a lot, but can definitely get that on subsequent playthroughs it can proobably get grating a bit, or the mystery element of it is gone, and mods can help skip that or the idea of getting a lightsaber early on is a cool novelty but in my opinion definitely goes against the setting and pacing of the game and it's story. To me it definitely ruins the experience a bit and part of the fun of getting your lightsaber in Kotor 2 is you 'earned' it, but I can't fault anyone for wanting to play that way either, I just don't really get or agree with it being a "problem" with the game when this was very, very clearly by design to be this way haha. Unfortunately I don't plan on getting this port until we see what the Restored Content DLC is like. As much as I am nostalgic for and enjoyed the base game of Kotor 2 when it first came out, between some game breaking bugs and major holes in the story that the Restored Content Mod patches up (especially in the final chapter), it is incredibly difficult to go back to the original version of the game. I am glad to see that Aspyr is still trying to push Kotor 2 at all though, this game is still incredible and is to this day still my favourite game of all time. I do find it a bit odd that they wanted to ship the game in this state, without the restored content mod, and with a critical bug that literally makes the game unable to be finished... but still happy it's out regardless.
To defend Kotor 1 on switch. The sound bytes have been all fixed as well as quite a few other things. Still listening to this video will edit. Edit: Yeah. I love Kotor 2, but I justppayed on Xbox og and it was pretty okay. No crazy buzzing. Finishable. Hair physics and better particle effects. Kind of crazy there are so many issues.
about to play this game for the first time. last time i had the itch for something like this i ended up buying mass effect, i been playing a ton of new vegas and was looking for something else to scratch the itch and have great storytelling like that, hope i love this game. i dont mind bad graphics usually but i hate how clunky and not intuitive a lot of the old games can be, thats why I couldnt play original fallout, felt like controls were in another language lol
How do people not get a lightsaber until late into the game? I've always gotten mine after you encounter Visas Marr, because you get the parts you need from doing the Telos quest and fighting Visas.
The problem with the Steam version of KOTOR II is, while the quality of life updates are great, the Workshop is actually NOT the best place for mods, unless you're only using ONE mod. In order to have mods be guaranteed to be compatible with one another, you really need to manually install them on KOTOR II. If you're only using TSLRCM though, Workshop is fine. Also, the dialogue skipping bug was actually made WORSE by the Aspyr update from 2015 on PC. I was excited for the Switch release of 2, but I'll definitely be waiting until TSLRCM is out for it and the bugs are ironed out.
Even without the restored content patch I can play it while waiting for my steam deck. And since I'm giving my switch to my niece it shouldn't go to waste.
I was unable to complete KOTOR 1 and 2!!! I loved both of them. I love starwars. Played both on Xbox and both games froze and got corrupted save files as I was very deep in the game.
I remember some awesome glitches on the original Kotor in the OG Xbox. I had one save file where I could somehow go re-do everything on Talis despite the fact that I wasn't supposed to go there anymore. I was super powered up and at end game levels. The funniest save glitch I had was that Everytime I saved and came back onto my ship, I had a new clone of Zaalbar waiting. I could eventually have an army of Wookies on my ship. I gotta say it was fun venturing around with two Zalbaars as my bodyguards.

Im just upset that we still havent gotten the old kotors on playstation, I still have my original pc copies but man it would be so nice to have that on my current console lol
It really sucks that the only way to get a physical copy is through Limited Run for now anyway. Why? This isn't some niche game, The Jedi Knight Collection released as a physical release. I hope that once the additional content is released on the Switch they release a physical copy with both games.
The restoration mod dlc was scrapped due to legal reasons. It's only for PC. And the dialogue skipping this has always been an issue on the PC version for years. It doesn't do it on the Xbox version though. Must be a PC issue this is a PC port.

I was going to wait regardless because I'm buying the Physical from LRG. I know people don't like that LRG is slow with their releases and that availability is also an issue, but 1 thing that LRG benefits from is that they often release their games with all patches and content added so you can play as intended via that cartridge without needing downloads.
They probably should have done what most companies forget to do, ship the game complete…I think dlc for a remake or remaster is an astounding waste of time to the consumer. When I want to play a game I’ve played before I want it all at once. Even without the game breaking bug why would I want to play a lesser version of a game without dlc that fundamentally makes the game better? This strategy has me worried about the development of the KOTOR remake.
that's what worries me about most games these days, back in the day games released completed first, and there was no day one or whenever patches
Well if people are willing to fork over the moneyz that is what is going to continue to happen , these people barely put any effort in this , it's absolutely busted and people are still sucking their nuts . Oh yeah lets not forget about the KOTOR remake if you honestly think it's going to be an incredible game you are delusional , with all the staff that is 90 % sjw crack heads good luck , they are going to make a mediocre game and everybody will praise it like it's a gift from god himself because most ,, gamers ,, are dumb as cork and will accept anything you give them as long as it's not garbage or has microtransactions in the game .
So the remake is in a partnership with Sony and Sony QA won’t let it ship in bad condition because that would hurt Sonys image
@@harshbalwani9736 oh I forgot everything Sony makes is a perfect game with 0 bugs and glitches. Sony also had a exclusive partnership with the guy making Abandoned and he’s being called a scammer. Being partnered with Sony doesn’t mean Jack shit.
Really? Better? You think slowly running back and forth as slow ass droids in a huge map is better?
It's nice to think back to a time when Star Wars wasn't a joke.
No shit. These games were released in the golden years compared to now. Revenge of the Sith and 2 KOTOR games all back to back to back.
I am a big fan of KOTOR2, Honestly I would suggest it on PC over the switch (both KOTOR 2 and KOTOR remastered are mostly based on some of the mods popular anyway)!
With mods, you can add so much content beyond just the restored content mod, Hell you can even add raytracing!
15+ year old game and it still comes with bugs and dlc… lol
Just played this for the first time and absolutely loved it! Probably my second favorite Star Wars game!
@Scott ur mom
@Scott wondering that myself, i think Jedi Knight 2 Jedi Outcast might be my actual favorite but its a toss up the KOTOR games are amazing
@Scott Jedi Fallen Order atm
9:30 you can actually get that experience here by using the cheat menu. You can spawn whatever weapon you want at anytime.
Yeah I'm surprised matty doesn't know about that
Probably an unpopular opinion, but I loved Peragus lol
I need that restored content mod hopefully it comes out soon😬
agreed, we def need it
He’s not joking.
I'll definetly be checking this out. But yeah I'm big into dialogue, so I'll wait until that patch comes out. Good review man.
We KNOW there isn't a way to beat the game currently
Releases game anyways...
that's game developers for you, remember CP2077?
Thanks to the brutally honest assessment iv decided to pick up this game after all. I fell in love with the first game back in the day but never played the second. I'll wait till it's been patched up tho
The auto skipping dialog bug I have noticed will be intermittently fixed by either reloading the save or saving and quitting and reloading. Not an ideal fix but a fix no less.
it's an engine bug that happens if the game is open for too long. just restart half way through long gaming sessions.
nice of you to let people know that, i'm hoping its another thing that's fixed with the patch, i refuse to buy this game without it
@@Rin-qj7zt that makes a lot of sense Thanks.
@@professorbaxtercarelessdre1075 unfortunately because it's a bug with the engine and not the game, that's probably unlikely. All games made in that engine will have the bug, so even Kotor 1 has it. The engine itself, Odyssey, has been retired, so there's nobody left to fix the bug, and so there's not much the port developers can really do about it.
@@Rin-qj7zt well that sucks, i really want to play KOTOR 2 again but if bugs still exist that would prevent me from completing the game, or that humming sound being there constantly, i don't think i can look passed that stuff
I played this game a few years ago for the first time, with the Restored mod, & loved it!
Still my favorite two game series to date. Just beat Kotor 1 again for i think the 12th time yesterday for switch. Time to do KOTOR 2 for the 18th 😂

watched you for along time glad you dont bs us
fun game prefer the first game personally
The buzzing is in every port ive played. From pc to xbox to ipad to switch.
You know, I totally forgot that I bought Kotor 1 and 2 on PC a while back. Imma go mod the hell out of it.
Hey, Matty, are you about gaming in general or Xbox PC? or whats the deal? I'd love to hear more PS news or more gaming news in general from you! You're nice to listen to and seem like a cool dude!
They should have just released this with the restored content, I could wait for that.
That buzzing has always been in KOTOR2 in every iteration of the game I’ve played and owned(I have played all of them). I thought it was just part of the game.
Even on the Original Xbox? I’ve played it on the OG Xbox & I could hear it a little…but then again, I had a TV with 2 regular speakers.
If I remember correctly yes it was. Probably not as loud as I heard it on the PC, and XBONE. The iOS version had it from time to time.
That’s all based on my personal experience. I can’t speak for everyone’s experience.
@@cotyselen2282 its been so many years since i played KOTOR 2 i think i vaguely recall it being there when i played it on PC back then but i think it wasn't as loud as it sounds here, hopefully they can at least make it less pronounced with the patch
I bought both, playing through 1 again before 2 gonna wait for the dlc
I know most people will hate this but the first KOTOR was even better on mobile, graphics were fantastic, and it had full controller support. The ideal way to play though would be on something like one of the larger iPad models, or on a phone if you have one of those controllers like the Razer Kishi or Backbone.
On the topic of one linears...
It's Reyn Time
Nintendo needs to get its act together still, no sale) heavy sale games, over priced items, low quality games being allowed, old games no heavy sales. Steam is allowing 2+ dollars for both KOTOR games.
I love making a dual wielding blaster Jedi in KOTOR 2.
KOTOR 2 deserves a sequel.
Pretty sure the audio buzzing is normal for peragus
How does this make you feel about the remake being made by the sake studio? Especially when given the rumor about Microsoft originally turning down the remake due to the developer behind it.
i hope Nintendo payed the people who did all the work restoring the content.
Well people like different things. I turn on my switch everyday. It’s been a while since I touched my XB1X though.
Thanks for the review, Matty.
Didn’t Aspyr just say the game is literally not able to be completed in its current form on Switch?
Wow, that sound bug is kind of a deal breaker.
same, though from other comments it sounds like its always been there, maybe just less bad depending on the version
Did you say Revan was a male? She doesn’t appear if you say Revan was female regardless of light side alignment
it's a full remake from the ground up not a remaster not to get things confused, so it's gonna be totally different combat and gameplay but we'll just have to see how it turns out
@@SSBM_Teo Yes I did. Every time and she still didn’t show up.
@@rushyyofficial8024 I don’t mind a change in gameplay. I just hope the story stays the same but with new cool side missions
Have you heard about the Steam Deck?
@@SkorpionSSs I have, unfortunately, having just recently talked my wife into letting me get a Switch, and already having an aging Xbox One, there’s absolutely, positively no way I’ll be able to talk her into another console.
That being said, Steam Deck would likely be a solid pick for a portable KOTOR2 if someone already has one or it’s in their budget! I hadn’t thought of that!
That buzzing sound would drive me crazy
Restored content when? I am waiting on that before playing this.
Oh yeah, I’m definitely waiting on this. It’s absolutely not worth playing in its current state for me
To defend Kotor 1 on switch.
To add to that it is possible for a player to never get a lightsaber if you don't get the parts.
They patched the "one liners" back into the game - it was a complete oversight.
I've had that buzzing in every version of KOTOR 2 I've ever played.
Even without the restored content patch I can play it while waiting for my steam deck. And since I'm giving my switch to my niece it shouldn't go to waste.
When can we expect the patch
Have it on pc, Xbox, android, and ios. Yeah, I think I can wait.
This makes KOTOR 2 canon since this is disney era and they gave the okay for it
hey Matty, thanks for the review and info, i bought KOTOR 1 on switch recently cause of your review and i'm enjoying it, loved the story of KOTOR 2 more myself, are you planning on an update video when they release the restored content patch on Switch? would love your thoughts on that when it does :D
I wish they brought this to Xbox. I know it’s backwards compatible, but I really want to play this game with the restored content mod.
Ohhhhh my gosh that buzzing would drive me nuts
IDK I remember that humming sound from back in the day and thought it was coming from ship or technology and was part of the game
I remember kotor2 on og Xbox and that buzzing always got alot worse when you looked at bright lights. It would get loud af.
Have they fixed the giant text boxes on KOTOR 1 ???
Starting with a lightsaber makes Peragus a little more enjoyable
It's great on Series X and perfect on PC, I don't want to play it on a switch. Must run at a lower res than the Xbox release.
Peragus and the Harbinger were the best parts of the game in my opinion.
I didn’t like Kotor 2 when I first played it. I loved the first one. I think I will be playing it now that they fixed the ending.
It’s a solid game, but I agree in that I prefer the original. KOTOR II is still phenomenal though.
The game crashes in all the same spots as it does on my pc. Obsidian had great writers, but not so great programmers.
The restoration mod dlc was scrapped due to legal reasons. It's only for PC. And the dialogue skipping this has always been an issue on the PC version for years. It doesn't do it on the Xbox version though. Must be a PC issue this is a PC port.
Thanks for the review. Is the game patched and restored content implemented yet?
Patched, yes. But no restored content.
So only buy when it's on sale. 50% off
Doesn’t give me the warm fuzzy feels for the KOTOR remake.

Somthing ya missed there are mod type things in kotor 2 if ya double click the left analog you can spawn in anything or raise stuff and all that idk if I missed you say this in the video but that's a thing so you can spawn a lightsaber with a white crystal on peragus

I'll wait for for an actual remake. Can't do old graphics.
