Quick extra info about side quests as someone who's played for a decade and played the updates as they came out:
Many side quests still exist despite not being readily available! Once you open the map you have to select "show exploration missions", and then a ton of side-quests will be available!
    My opinions:
As someone who's played since 2014 when I was just nine years old, this game has been a huge mainstay of my life. I've enjoyed countless hours and days on there, with people I'd come to call my friends at times... we'd all log on at the same times, talk about whatever random thing happened in the world that day, or some random movie we'd watched. A little community of like-minded people, all of whom (like myself) have moved on now and may not even remember the times on SWTOR.
The game allowed my creativity to run wild and allowed me to fully immerse myself into the world which I loved. At one time there were guilds of dedicated roleplayers who would engage in long thought out storylines amongs themselves, and that further added to the immersive and creative aspects of it all. The gearing was stunning as were the graphics, with many planets having hidden secret and areas you could only find by exploring.
Enough ranting on my end, but man, I will forever love this game and what it had, however as of late I've seen myself not returning like I once did.
It's gotten stagnant and stale, the creation suite which once had unique backgrounds for each side has since become an endless black hole void.
Each class is the same gameplay wise as you can select your favorite combat style regardless.
Companions are overpowered and enemies are useless with all the changes that've been made. The grind, which at times was annoying, is gone... and with it, any sense of accomplishment and pride that came with reaching a new level is gone as well. It's a race to max level these days just because you can.

Most of the streamlining actually happened over time. I started playing before LotS, and most of the streamlining was already in the game (Outside of classes being opened up and skills being given automatically). This mainly happened because bioware realised that their primary playerbase wasn't the hardcore MMO players, but people like me who played for the story, who played almost exclusively solo.
They played to their strengths (writing) and decided to make things less time consuming, reducing the amount of grinding players need to get to the good stuff. The two best stories on each planet were the planetary questlines and the player's class story. And that's all someone needs to do to stay on level curve. They don't need to do filler sidequests, they don't need to grind out the best gear, they can just enjoy the story.
For people wanting an MMO, the options are still there, but said options aren't forced onto people who want to play a bioware RPG. If people want a more traditional MMO experience, there are/were alternatives, but no other MMO leans into the story/RPG aspects like SWTOR. That's what makes it stand out, and it makes sense for the devs to stick with it.
Even without the time consuming grind there's a ton of content to experience. I'm someone who played almost exclusively solo, barely engaged with the MMO aspect and just played for the stories, and I still put in 599.4 hours on steam. Time I probably wouldn't have put into it if I had to grind a lot or engage in stuff like veteran flashpoints/operations constantly just to experience the story.

I gave up on that hope. No publisher is going to put out a sandbox MMO or any sandbox game in general anytime soon, without a disney-theme-park-esque quest system that holds everyone's hand since everyone has ADHD and a 15-second attention span. Also need new arbitrary questlines to perpetuate the live service model and generate additional revenue every quarter. SWG's magic lied in the fact that we, the players made the stories. "The greatest story ever told....yours" was the first message you got when you finished installing the game.

SWG forever will be the better Star Wars mmo game. Because you felt like you lived in the Star Wars universe on your own adventure. Which I get Swtor isn't mean't to be in that regard, but it fails to make you feel like you're apart of the Star Wars universe. Choices that seemingly matter, really don't matter as it's placebo.
But for SWG? You saw and FELT when the other side of the story is dominating a planet. Not to mention the space combat + crafting is eons better than Swtor.

    • @Digimess88
      @Digimess88 5 месяцев назад

@@Necroside145 I agree, SWG you had to build your "toon" up from literally nothing. The environment incentivized players to cooperate and help each other out. I was incentivized to join a guild pretty quickly, and the guild was incentivized to recruit me for manpower. Whatever "quests" or "quest line" that was in-game for a long time was just window-dressing. Most top-tier "alpha" players spent their day stirring up drama in PvP-related stuff, so it became more the focus than anything really Star Wars related.
Fast forward to Rage of the Wookies and Trials of Obi Wan expansions and the quest lines become more developed but nothing too crazy. You'd do the quest, get the reward for yourself and guildies and then business as usual. Tbh I liked having a balance of novel content, but then having the ongoing community-driven PvP/Faction drama thing to go back to.
Oh and to add to what you say about "feeling" the other side or other player's presence on a planet....it's why if I play on some emu servers it gives me a weird shade of depression or something because it feels so empty. If you actually have memories of playing back in 2003-ish and compare to now you'd rather just not play and leave the memories be as they were.

I think Swtor or maybe this timeline has been explored pretty well, I'd like to see them either go back further in time to Tulak Horde's era and that period. Or advance a bit into the future. So great vid but a couple of things
    - The game actually didnt get easier at 7.0 it got easier long long time ago. Like right after shadow of revan. It was around the time the character boost tokens really started becoming popular.
    - The sidequests aren't taken out they are marked as exploration missions something you enable on your map to see (but thats still bad and should be on by default.)
    - Scaling yeah it sucks but unless you can produce the amount of content wow can you just have to. It keeps all your content current.
    - SWG didn't die because of NGE. SWG was already suffering massive player count hits with WoW. And it wasn't like the game was popping and being healthy, then bam nge. WoW revolutionized tab target combat, was way less grindy, made it much easier to group up with friends and not focus around macro farming DWB for hours. I love SWG but the combat was super dated post WoW. The NGE was actually the last ditch effort to spice up the game but the WoW machine was at full speed around that time and getting faster. It wasn't just swg but many mmos went through this because they all got wrecked by WoW.
As for Swtor, I do miss the slower leveling, challenging questing etc. But I don't blame them from shifting away from that. For starters alot of the "mmo/gameplay" oriented players lets be real bounced very early on. They would trickle back in on occasion but didnt stick as long as the more casual players. The other thing is the game has alot of hours of story with all the xpacs. Requiring someone to get through all of it is kinda rough its alot. Especially when you have to do some planets again and again for each class story. But mmo's in general have gotten easier just because well lets be real...alot of people who play them just arent good at gaming so end-game is where the challenge will live in most mmo's probably forever from this point.
This was an amazing video and a great road through memory lane. As someone who still plays SWTOR it is a game that just needed a little bit of love but man does that tiny team keep trying in a competitive market and I can respect that.

I've been playing since launch with very little down time and I agree with this video. Yes somethings feel a little too easy in the early game, but I'm not against that myself. The enemy scaling, though, isn't 100% like how he said in this video, though. What happened is not planets have fixed "max level" for how strong your stats are, but you don't loss any abilities you have, so you can 100% steamroll some planets. Group stuff though, like Flash Points and Operations are set based on the different players' levels. But even then you can solo a good number of them. Speaking of Flash Points, some of them now have a "Story Mode" difficulty specifically for solo players, if they don't want to group up or play them on a harder mode. Finally, while companions can now be any role (dps, tank, or heal), you still need to raise their standing with you to make them more effective. A companion with lvl 10 influence won't be nearly as effective in a lot of the game as a lvl 50 (the max lvl). I definitely say try this game out!

This doesn't just apply to the tech classes either; If you have the legacy perk for going full light or full dark, either by actually reaching it on a character or just buying it, you can use that side's classes with origins on the opposite side. I've been playing this game for the first time the last week, and I did buy it in 2011 at release but it had been sealed forver due to me thinking that I did want to play the older games first.
Anyway, I would agree with you that the enemies are too easy - only the Heroic areas are difficult.
But it's still fun feeling OverPowered and it has an interesting story - I'm mostly playing the game for the story.
I think grinding can be tedious if the enemies are too difficult so maybe they wanted a faster pace through the story.

I tried WOW, FF14 and SWTOR several times over rthe years and get so bored I leave lol. I do like what they do for gaming as a whole and how invested communities become. I agree I really enjoyed SWTOR when it was first released. Loved the progression. The catch is that my life changed and I don't have the timer I used to have (work kids), so I ended up playing more and more single player games, as I didn't have the time to sink hours and hours in an MMO. I recently started playing the game again and found it was a more digestible MMO for a busy life time. Do I think the old version was more enjoyable? at the time yes, but unfortunately in present day I would not think of playing it. Now it is enjoyable to sit in my living room while my wife is watching Netflix to play it on my steam deck. It was a really good review/analysis :)

I can't remember how long ago(decades) by now that some dev said in a game interview "One of the hardest things when making games is that gamers don't know what they want. When you 'give' them what 'they want', they don't like it... if it's too hard, they don't like it... if it's too EASY, THEY don't like it. Gamers don't know what they want, they just know they want something they'll enjoy. Sometimes you just have to make the game how you want and hope the consumer likes it. If not, oh well... they'll move on." something to that effect.
Damn if it still doesn't hold true today, if not more so now than ever.

This is my "Comfort game" that just helps me chill out after coming home from work. I love the side quests and the feel of the game. I played SWTOR a lot last year after not playing for many years and gameplay wise it is in the best spot it’s ever been. The biggest issue is they never settled on a direction so you see elements of when it was story first vs mmo gameplay first and feels a little disjointed at times. The quality of the storytelling is great though and carries the KOTOR torch faithfully even if the experience is quite different. If they made more content for it, I’d definitely still play.

Something amusing you can try out if you're interested, is to wear completely empty customizable gear and no accessories. It makes the game much harder, but it's still possible to get to level cap and even do some of the high level story quests. I haven't played in quite awhile though, so maybe the more recent level 80+ content is impossible with such weak gear. Your companions really can only carry you so far.

Honestly, the reason why they never ported it to consoles is because it’s an 11 y/o game with an ancient engine. It would be more costly for them to port it. And frankly, the game makes money, but not enough to warrant the attempt to put it on consoles. At least that’s what was reported in the past.

If I want a challenge, we still have the heroic missions and pvp and other content. But for me, it was always about the story.
(And if you were not a subscriber the grind was AWFUL because they lowered the amount of xp you could get once you were high level enough. Now the game gives out xp boosts to free players which helps get through that grind and rewards you for being a free player.)

I think you can change the difficulty to Veteran which is a pain in the ass defeating champion and elite enemies sometimes.
I started SWTOR in 2015 and still playing it in 2024, I have to say that Vanilla game still the best, expansion are not that great since there is no more unique story for each class, it all merges into one storyline (all the same to all classes) it becomes repetitive, but the thing that I hate the most is the newest expansion, they start to do the KOTOR cutscenes, no more full voice cutscenes and I hate it so much. I had no problem with that kind of cutscenes in side quest, companion alerts, events. But when they started to do it in the main story it pissed me off.
I just 100% enjoy the vanilla game doing side quest, explorations quests, story arc of each planet and bonus series of each planet, the rest I barely enjoy it...

    Great video! Loved every second!
of the legacy of the sith changes you mentioned, the only one that LOTS brought was the cross class "skills"
The rest of the changes, easier gameplay, companion role selection, level scaling all came in 2015 with the KOTFE expansion.
KOTFE was a soft re-launch of the game and sought to tap into a then re-ignited star wars fanbase, and needed to make the base game appeal to a lower common denominator of players.
Game has been unfortunately utterly easy since. And the new expansions have a "one size fits all" design philosophy that honestly sucks. No reason any character outside of the 4 force classes would be the titular "outlander and Alliance commander" that is who you play as in the latest expansions.
The game has written itself into a hole with it's story, which necessitated a narrative shift back to the focus on Darth Malgus the game currently has.
While the game is alive and well, and pulls in many many millions of dollars a month, it is unlikely another massive story expansion will be produced.
Still though, thousands of hours of great story content is present in this game.
On ultra settings the game looks wonderfully, plays wonderful, the cash shop is non/invasive and overall the experience is one every star wars and mmo fan should try

It's good for the class stories but once you finish them all, only play a force sensitive toon from that point on.
I do like that with each year they're learning how to better design things technologically speaking.
But I wish they were more inventive not just copying from latest projects at disney...
Updating the base game appearance itself would be preferable and definitely stop removing skills and actually adding new abilities that aren't just mediocre passives that only slightly benefit you in raids->ops.

I started playing SWG in 2005 and would play it up until they announced the shutdown, after that I was hopeful that SWTOR would fill that void, but unfortunately the game itself had an identity crisis and it really didn't know what it wanted to be, it went all over the place with it's content and would change many things about it that would eventually lead up to it being mostly a single player experience. For someone whom has played it from launch, I don't feel like it's worth pursuing anymore, but for a newcomer who is just getting started they will be entertained for countless hours in the rich storytelling the game has to offer. The real unfortunate thing is the people handling the game now are from the company Broadsword and is a small team that pales in comparison to when it was in it's heyday and during the Knights of the Fallen Empire era. In all honesty it's on a life support scenario and could easily have the plug pulled at any point, which I'm wondering when will that time come, but until then it will still continue to linger.

  • @TostetoLightsky

It's funny how history repeats itself between SWG and SWTOR, the NGE is regarded as one of the most infamous updates that supposedly ruined the game according to many people despite it also bringing content we don't see in any MMORPG's these days. With SWTOR every update changed the game in many ways that would either be overwritten with the next big update afterwards or just flat out removed. It's a sad situation, I had high hopes with this game during it's early days, but now it's unfortunately run it's coarse for me.

As a new player, I think maybe you already have passed that feeling of accomplishment from growing, after all it is about you as much as it is the character. It just made you wearing the other characters an ability to be more streamlined and similar so you don't have to learn all the playstyles. I still see people asking how to deal with things all the time in discord and reddit because they are dying because they don't have this or that right, and need to adjust. Setting you character up with your level of gear is one thing, then picking out the right skills and understanding them is another, knowing what to attack and when, positioning, companion maxing, budget tending, the knowledge aspect. I mean the systems in this game are enough to negate your idea of no challenge , that I have to assume it is because you have 20 years into this stuff that maybe that is why you aren't seeing it?
Alderaan is one of the planets that shit gets real on. Progressively they have harder and harder bosses but I doubt it is as much of a cliff as it once was. But that never really stops. Sure you might be at level 80 by the time you get to a level 60 planet but if they catch you slipping, you can and will die, and that is all the scaling has done. It actually will work against you if you aren't properly geared or user skilled enough to deal with things. Like toward the end of the consular story you have to be able to use interrupts to beat that boss at the end. There is no way to cheese it.
But given the game isn't exactly linear, I didn't even experience that until 3 years later after quitting the game and then coming back. There are huge voids now because you can skip around that leave huge gaps in the average players experience. I took a bit of a slow approach, i watched a lot of content from youtube for tips and learned some quests are turned off by default like exploration quests. I had varying levels of characters and none of them had that on so had to do them on newer characters.
Which brings up another huge challenge in that the time it takes for things might seem fast, but in reality there is tons and tons you need to do to reach goals. There are most likely things you don't know you are missing as well. The way that things change in this game also means that more than likely you are going to be wrong about a lot you reference as knowns.
Which is kind of weird too, there are such a variety of ages of players and amounts of experience, and what they get from the game and how they enjoy it, it is hard to make generalizations.
Things are so poorly explained in this game too that you try to google and it could be 10 years old the only info. There always aren't people that know how to answer your questions either so good luck lol.
I keep having to redo things and regrind things because I chose poorly or didnt understand a system or the bar got moved, and it is so frustrating. So yeah plenty of hurdles to climb, and its not like there is a clear map of those. You just stumble into them.
Glad though to hear you story and how it has affected you. Kind of seems like there is a pattern there. Break up with girl, rebound with games, find another woman, heart broke, rebound iwth games, break up but don't really care, not really rebound but still gaming, sounds like your transition to the dark side has been complete. lol Fucking hell life is hard man. Cheers!
