@@Person16384 I disagree. Japanese kana fit extremely well within Japenese's phonetic inventory and phonotactics and I don't think that the Roman alphabet would be a better fit. The Roman alphabet is not at all better than kana, its just different. To be honest, in my opinion, the Roman alphabet is actually a bad fit for English, because it lacks many vowel symbols and many sounds have to be written with digraphs.

Just for fun Andy, I was interested if his name was Chinese at birth. It was, but not Bruce Lee. First, I wonder why, to transliterate foreign names, you don't use the same pronunciation when it exists in Chinese language : for example for Peggy, the [g] sound exists like in brother (gē). I mean a given name consisting of two syllables. I know there are different romanization systems, like Hanyu Pinyin or Wade-Giles, but i personally want to do it like Chinese themselfs want their names to be spelled. I gonna take as example martial arts legend Huang Feihong. 1) Fei Hong (or Fei-Hong) 2) Fei hong (or Fei-hong) 3) Feihong Which is the way chinese people themselfs want how their given name should be spelled? I think that's one way of doing it. another one is to compare what names mean, and find a similar meaning to your English (Western) name into Chinese, cumulating up to two characters for the 名 and choosing the first syllable of your patronym for the 姓, that way you can get a seemingly Chinese name like Chinese have in English. Rarely have you seen Chinese people using their 名‘s pinyin to makeup a first name (well it happens, but most have a Western name), so since Chinese list is not fixed, why not go for a nice one ?

@@Person16384 I disagree. Japanese kana fit extremely well within Japenese's phonetic inventory and phonotactics and I don't think that the Roman alphabet would be a better fit. The Roman alphabet is not at all better than kana, its just different. To be honest, in my opinion, the Roman alphabet is actually a bad fit for English, because it lacks many vowel symbols and many sounds have to be written with digraphs.

Just for fun Andy, I was interested if his name was Chinese at birth. It was, but not Bruce Lee. "His Chinese name was given to him by his parents at birth, while it is said that a nurse at the hospital in San Francisco where he was born gave him his English name. Hi Andy, thank you so much for your videos and all your tips! I have 2 questions about the transliterations of the names. First, I wonder why, to transliterate foreign names, you don't use the same pronunciation when it exists in Chinese language : for example for Peggy, the [g] sound exists like in brother (gē). Or for John, why change the J sound in Ye? Or Sa in sha ( why not use Sa sound like in sā) etc... Is there a reason? And my second question is why add tons to the names? Thank you!!

1.The translator tried to find a character which not only sounds similar but also goes with neutral or positive meanings.
Gy doesn't exist in Chinese while Ji means: auspicious
J in John might not from English because J is pronounced as Y in Spanish.

How should a chinese given name really be spelled? I mean a given name consisting of two syllables. I know there are different romanization systems, like Hanyu Pinyin or Wade-Giles, but i personally want to do it like Chinese themselfs want their names to be spelled.
I gonna take as example martial arts legend Huang Feihong.
1) Fei Hong (or Fei-Hong)
2) Fei hong (or Fei-hong)
3) Feihong
Which is the way chinese people themselfs want how their given name should be spelled?

门米特 is better and it means nothing else but a foreigner's name.
I think that's one way of doing it. another one is to compare what names mean, and find a similar meaning to your English (Western) name into Chinese, cumulating up to two characters for the 名 and choosing the first syllable of your patronym for the 姓, that way you can get a seemingly Chinese name like Chinese have in English. Rarely have you seen Chinese people using their 名‘s pinyin to makeup a first name (well it happens, but most have a Western name), so since Chinese list is not fixed, why not go for a nice one ?

When Chinese want or need an English name, we just choose one but don't transliterate our Chinese names.
