    Given the amount of fails/faults related to roundabouts, cars and bike tests, it's most unusual that there's actually no section for roundabouts (only junctions) on the dl1 (cars) and mod2 (bikes) test report forms. So when the dvsa publish top reasons for failing tests, and often 'observation at junctions' comes out top, in your minds eye you are relating it to crossroads or emerging out of side rds etc.. When they could be mainly roundabout faults. Glad I got that off my chest Leanna haha.

      It's also a huge problem that roundabouts aren't clearly marked or consistently laid out. Having lane markings on the ground (underneath cars) rather than on signs above is another ridiculous feature of UK driving. Yes there are usually signs, but often they are very close to the roundabout meaning that by the time they're legible it's too late if it's busy traffic. The Americans/Canadians don't do everything well, but boy are their roads better delineated and thus easier to navigate.

    I failed my mod 2 last week due to following distances and forgetting a lifesaver on a roundabout (I entered in the left lane went strait across and ended up in the right lane without doing a lifesaver, didn't even notice as there was no marking on it) your videos have been super helpful in preparation of my second try :)

    • @motorcyclelessonsuk
      @motorcyclelessonsuk  10 месяцев назад +2

      Ahhhh, that's a common mistake in training. If there's more than one lane on the approach, work out which one you're in, and even if there's no lane markings, imagine them, and stay in your lane. If you choose to change lanes it needs to be a conscious decision with a lifesaver to move. Better luck next time and thanks for your kind words 😊

    Interesting one on checking (other drivers) mirrors: talking with my son about filtering in dense traffic: he cycles in central London and we share ‘clues’ that help us both to navigate that sort of situation safely. He has noticed, in London, that many newer vehicles as well as PSV’s have small cameras in place of wing mirrors, so no more clues there as to wether they are looking (or not).
    Tons of info there, as usual. Thank you!

    UK roundabouts are weird for people that learned elsewhere. In Germany the lanes stay and you have to actively leave the roundabout. 1st time driving here I could understand how I got of wrong (Hanger Lane in London) as I just followed my lane. Took me a few goes to work out the UK system. My brother just visited and he was equally confused.
    When I did my motorcycle licence here there is a fairly busy roundabout just outside the test centre in Tolworth (probably outside all test centres). On training we did nearly all variations, on test it was during my self guided ride and I just needed to turn left and realising lane 1 is M&S only so I needed lane 2, which we practiced.

    • @larsmenken2679
      @larsmenken2679 Год назад +2

      Oh, also a question. If my outside lane is showing as straight in the road markings, do I still indicate left as leaving the roundabout? We have a few of those around here.

      Hmmm that's a little disconcerting for you. However I do often say to students who say "I don't know the roads around here", that by the end of the training you should be able to ride in any city in the UK, so to some extent it is about reading the road signs and markings alongside forward planning and anticipation skills. It does help however to have practised the areas where the instructors know the students are most likely to fail. I expect that's what you'll cover in your lesson. Best of luck 🤞

    If there is more than one lane on the roundabout, we should command the centre of our lane (I think). What about if it's a single lane roundabout? If it's a left turn, I guess we stay in position 1, and for a right turn, stay in position 3. But what if we are taking the second exit if it's still left of straight on? Should we stay in position 2, or 1? Thank you very much for this video by the way, it helped me a lot!

    • @motorcyclelessonsuk

    Sorta a similar issue here, this is a good video. However, as a learner who wants to know the checks and mirrors the examiner is going to be looking for on a roundabout junction is difficult to understand. You do have this completed in this video at times but the way its broken down is quite rushed. Instead of a overly detailed video I would've liked you to tell us what the main things are expected from us right from the start of the video. As I feel like I have to hunt down the main information I'm looking for which is going to prevent losing marks.

    Hi, couple of questions regarding indicating on multi lane spiral roundabouts
    If going right (exit past 12 o’clock) but the lanes spiral out would you still indicate right when entering roundabout even if you end up into lane 1 - or would indicating here cause confusion as you’re indicating right but end up left?
    Would this be different depending if traffic light controlled or not?
    Also, on spiral roundabout going for exit past 12 so right, but you can take middle lane which will spiral out to the left for your exit, again would indicating right here cause confusion or should you still be indicating right (despite being in middle lane which will become left)
    Hope that makes sense

    • @motorcyclelessonsuk
      @motorcyclelessonsuk  11 месяцев назад +1

      Hi, thanks for the questions. Whenever turning right on any sort of roundabout we signal right, until we pass the exit before the one we wish to take, at which point we signal left to exit. Whenever exiting we are signalling left, so if we are following the lane direction as it spirals out to the left this is not a problem. On a particularly large roundabout if you find yourself needing to actually change lanes to the left, obviously we would not be moving to the left whilst signalling right as this would cause confusion. I hope this helps. Thanks again 😊

    • @Slowerthanfast
      @Slowerthanfast 11 месяцев назад

      @@motorcyclelessonsukgreat, that’s what I thought but you often find conflicting information online.
      If my intended exit is right, despite what lane I enter in (based on correct markings etc) be it Middle which spirals out or right which spirals out, I’ve always kept my right indicator on until I’ve passed the last exit before mine and then changed it to a left signal
      Also just want to say you’re videos have been really valuable! I have my mod 2 in a couple of weeks 😊

    • @motorcyclelessonsuk
      @motorcyclelessonsuk  10 месяцев назад +1

      @@SlowerthanfastI think we are saying the same thing here: it's only if you actively change lanes as opposed to following the lane as it spirals out that you would need to cancel the right signal so as not to mislead anyone. I hope that makes sense. Thanks again 😊

    You are an expert and excellent teacher/instructor. However, in this video at least, you are crossing the stop line at the signal crossing or moving off the stop line when its red and yellow. Seeing other videos they say we need to wait for the green signal as red and yellow is still classed as a red. Hope you dont mind. Looking forward to your videos.

      Give me some time codes please. The camera angle is going to make you think I'm over the line by the way because of how the camera is angled on my helmet. If you can't see the line when I stop it doesn't mean I have gone over it. I'm very strict on this so I doubt you're seeing it correctly. Unless you can give me a clear time code where you think I'm moving off on red and amber, I can't see any instances where this is the case either. I go through two flashing ambers, which is permitted. There is one instance where you can't see the light change to green and I move off as soon as it does. Because I film these for educational purposes I do try to ensure things are done correctly, so at present, having watched it back I can't see what you're referring to.

      Hi Andy, it sounds as though you were going straight ahead in lane 2, and you haven't stayed close enough to the roundabout and have cut into the lane on your left, where there was a car in close proximity. When using Lane 2 keep tight to the roundabout (about a metre away from it is good) and when exiting make sure you don't cut over into lane 1. Only change lanes when you INTEND to, & make sure you do the correct shoulder checks. Best of luck 😊

    • @motorcyclelessonsuk
      @motorcyclelessonsuk  4 месяца назад +1

      Hi, if lane 1 is clear with the dual arrow then you should, according to the highway code, be using the left of the available lanes for the direction you want to travel in. If lane 1 is busy with traffic or has an HGV or bus at the start of the queue, you could/should use lane 2 to make progress rather than sit in the queue in lane 1. Hope that helps 😊
