    About Rick and Morty:
Rick and Morty is Adult Swim's most scientifically accurate animated comedy. Created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, it catalogues the bizarre misadventures of a bored scientific genius/drunkard and his socially awkward grandson, Morty. Their exploits tend to have unintended consequences for Morty's dysfunctional family, especially his unfailingly mediocre father, Jerry. Watch Rick and Morty battle everything from interdimensional customs agents to Cronenberg monsters now, only at AdultSwim.com.

Here is the thing, he was in jail for making terroristic threats, whilst in jail he killed his cell mate. This hearing was for the original charge not the murder. There would have been another hearing for the murder after that. They cannot charge you straight away for a murder without an investigation which was still under way at the time. This is why the judge was unaware there was also a murder, her killed the guy 5 days into jail, a couple of days later he went to see the judge for his original charge. Anyway he represented himself and got life in prison.

DA dropped the charges pretty quickly after the info leaked. It never even made it to a judges desk. DA said "significant new information came to light", which makes it sound like there was the potential for a counter-suit if a trial revealed if or how the info was purposefully leaked. Definitely would've been easy to prove damages to financial standings and reputation if that were the case. So basically it's an open question of what happened.

Stenographers type in phonemes rather than letters, pressing multiple keys at once like they are playing a piano. Common words and legal terms are hardcoded as special combinations. They can also program, on-the-fly, words or phrases being used repeatedly, like a DJ mixing music, allowing them to type extremely quickly.

Also the judge knew the lawyer personally.

This wasn't a trial, it was a hearing. (The defendant later pleaded guilty before a different judge - there was no trial - and was sentenced to life without parole.) The judge recused himself from this case immediately. And, judges often know lawyers well, maybe even personally. Especially in smaller towns.
