Thank you very much! And you can do that with almost anything you paint and not just mountains. They say oils are the most forgiving medium and you not only have to learn how that works obviously but believe it’s possible. Which was my original mistake. I used to paint acrylics and that’s easy to fix because you can simply paint over anything you want once it dries. So I was confident painting like that and wasn’t afraid to make mistakes because I knew and believed it could be corrected. So after some practice with oils, I just had to apply the same attitude once I figured out how it works.

Kenny, you are such a good teacher! You keep it fun and light. I've watched soooo many videos and tutorials my eyes are about to cross. LOL I've enjoyed and learned something from almost all but you go a lot further with making sure you get across what you are doing. You take your time and break it down in simple terms that anyone can understand. I am going to start working on just my mountains, clouds, trees, and water to get the practice. Then I will put it all together. I have been painting with acrylics but know that I am going to enjoy the oil so much more. Acrylics........... I like it but it's not forgiving at all. When you are a beginner it's easy to become frustrated. I've gotten almost all my supplies and can't wait to get started. Thank you so much for all you do. You are an amazing artist and have such a good heart for those of us who need to be led by the hand to learn!

I have watched your "How to paint mountains using the wet of wet technique" several times and appreciate you showing the three different methods for painting mountains and highlighting them. My breaks are getting better with the knife, but there continues to be a large roll of paint at the beginning. Is it due to the angle of the knife, or not applying enough pressure? Or, is there another reason and is there a solution?
Hey, friend, first off let me just thank you for watching the video and checking the channel out. And great question! So your roll of paint on your knife will depend on how much or far you drag your knife through it. I would say it’s best to lessen your load as you can always add more and just pick it back up to your canvas where you left off. Later on this year I do plan to make a follow up to this video, and I shall bring this solution up in the visual. Thanks again so much and remember to keep practicing!
I made a practice board from a birch board and three coats of valspar acrylic white. When I am finished, I scrape off the paint and wipe it with a baby wipe. Fresh “canvas”
I thicken my paint with corn starch as it helps break up the paint when painting snowy mountains with the knife. Seems to make it a little lumpy and breaks up smears.
That is very interesting. Never heard of using corn starch to thicken it up but it would make sense I imagine. Like I always say, it only helps to get and stay creative like that. 👍

Hello, Marie. Thank you for your question. So this style of painting that I do on ALL the videos on my channel is known as “wet on wet”. Which means the technique depends on the paint staying wet throughout the whole duration of the painting process. Even when working with the knife.

I just cant get the mountain snow to break up nicely. I have wiped off my mountain now four times. Snow looks flat and wide as a knife and it just looks like "icing a cake". Desperate and frustrated! More I try the worse it gets!
Alright let’s retrace some common steps that might be the issue. When you start off your canvas with your first coat of liquid white, is it applied thin and even? Too much of it won’t allow your paint to break even if you’re moving the knife correctly. Also, what brand of paint are you using? It should be thick otherwise it won’t work.
@@Kennysgreasypaint Thanks! Yes the liquid white layer is very thin and as I needed to wipe off the paint from the mountains 4 times today I wiped itwith toilet paper very dry just in case. I use Lefranc Bourgeois oil paints, works wonderfully on everything else. I got my mountains in the end pretty good, I used the knife as I use it when doing those thin white water lines on the shore, so basically making multiple lines and from there carefully making the knife wider little by little. And then I kinda got the technique on my hand but still it is very difficult. Unbelievably hard even if it looks so easy to do 😜

Hey great question! So for this specific technique and style of painting, a very thick consistency of oil paints is required. Winsor & Newton or Gamblin are good brands. The liquid white base coat does indeed help move and blend the firm paint around the canvas. Aside from the Bob Ross brand, you can get the brand from Hobby Lobby, Grumbacher, or even make your own liquid white with linseed oil and your titanium white, mixing those with a 50/50 ratio.
