Such good stuff. Please please please make these GDT episodes viewable again. Legitimately the best and most inspirational hiking content out there, sucks to think it may never be seen again. Much love brother ✌️
Wow, i looked for your old videos ever since you put them down. Thanks for making some available again. You are one of the most important humans in hiking in the last decade. Your style of vlogging is everywhere now. And i would dare to say that you did revolutionise the UL movement in a way or other too. Certainly, you have been my personal biggest inspiration and i wholeheartedly thank you for that!
This video is what made me decide to do this trail for my first thru hike. Man am I happy I watched this. Was the best experience of my life. Thanks for sharing!
I was looking up GDT stuff and glad to see you kept up some footage. It's def beauty hiking here in Alberta and lots of light in the summer to hike late into the night.
thanks for putting the links to these on your website!!!! i wasn't fortunate enough to have known about you a couple years ago so I've been scrounging to find anything that is still linked to online that might be unlisted to view these beautiful, inspirational videos.
Awesome! I've been looking forward to this since I first heard you were doing the GDT. I enjoyed Wired's description and photos from her 2016 through hike, but your videos are always awesome. I hope there's much more to come.
Great work as usual. It was nice to run into you at the start of your hike at the Many Glacier campground. Looks like we might have to put this trail on the top of our to do list. Keep the great vids coming.
This looks incredible. I'm planning on a 70-90 mile backpacking trip late next July. I'm going with a friend who hasn't done a ton of backpacking. I'd like to show him some incredible scenery. Any recommendations on a section of the GDT to try out? We especially like areas with lakes.
Hey. Awesome video. Like your stuff. Trying to find the specific song in this video. I know its Rumtum but can't find it on band camp. Thanks for outing out such great quality videos.
This looks to be a great series! Looking forward to watching it. What company makes the long sleeved hooded shirt you wear in many of your treks? Also, I know it is a departure from the content of your vid's, but I would love to see more of what you're packing for your thru hikes...
This might be too techie a question but any tips on settings for the RX100 mark III for landscape photography and video capture? Got one recently but I'm so confused haha 😂😂😂
i actually feel like i had exactly what i needed and stayed comfortable the whole trip. had a few heavier things with me to handle the expected weather like running tights, neck gaiter, and an inflatable pad
Thanks for the gear list. I'm interested in your prototype shelter. How are you getting 7.5 oz? Does that include stakes? I've been using a Hexamid Solo with netting since 2013, but am considering switching to a tarp only version (no netting) for 2018 when I resume my CT thru. Do you feel that you can get by without netting and just a headnet?
John, you're the only person on RUclips I find worth subscribing. Anyway, I'd like to hike the trail next year and so far the only worry are bears. It''s stupid, isn't it? Did you see any? How many of bears did you have to run from? I'm from Europe you know. Not many bears around
woah thanks! i see bears all the time. know how to properly interact with them and over time you'll learn that they really aren't that scary since there's no reason for them to harm you.
It doesn't sound very calming but thanks for the answer anyway. I had a look on GDT website and just seeing number trail closures because of bears make me feel like going hiking to Iceland instead. Only birds there www.greatdividetrail.com/july-2016-trail-and-road-conditions/
ya and you can also look at the number of fatalities incurred while driving, but it doesn't stop us from driving. just the risks we take. there's a pretty comprehensive wikipedia page that lists all fatal bear attacks in North America. there have been 2 this year and there was one last year, and in the meantime there are ~ 30 000 car fatalities in the US every year. the fear of bears is not completely false, but is very overblown
Yeah I understand overblowing completely... At the same time, I've found these statistics a bit misleading because not everybody goes to the wilderness but everyone drives a car from time to time unlesss you're an eco hero moving on a bike 365 days a year (but even then it's more risky than being eaten by a bear haha). I know my fear it's irrational but it's more like being afraid of something unknown and it's hard to beat it. Well, I think I'll go for it anyway because what the life would be like if we don't face our fears, right? Cheers buddy, keep on doing an amazing job here. All the best from Montenegrin mountains
Looking forward to the GDT episodes! Question: Are you using the 20mm lens for weight reasons? Being a 40mm equivalent in full frame it is almost at the lower end of a portrait lens. You have great footage to show for it. Yet, for just over an oz more (and admittedly a higher price tag) something like the 12mm f/2 olympus might be an interesting fast lens option for a m43 lens. It would almost double the field of view for those gorgeous landscapes and make it easier to depict man's smallness on that wonderous stage [less back tracking to get those shots]. I've used that particular olympus lens on some 10.000 trail miles and it has held up well. If you are interested in sample hiking footage, you can find some on my channel (eg. "Tag 4" of the 300km Western Alps loop - which is one of the few that has almost no German talking bits. The wide shots [video] were made with that lens - stills were done with the phone, I also log a 35-100mm around seen in some shots). I know you are serious about UL, but getting a ultra wide like the olympus and adding a second longer focal length lens, would give you great shooting flexibility: eg. for a second lens, since tele gets heavy: the 4 oz panasonic lumix g 42,5mm / f1,7 prime. Considering you chose the weight penalty of a system camera, and that you still do the GDT in an impressive 24 days, I'm sure it would take more than 4 oz to slow you down. :-) Happy trails!
:-) If I close my eyes I can actually envision you giving this exact reply in a Q&A video in that super relaxed fashion of yours. Good on ya. Well, in case you are upgrading at any point, maybe have a look at an ultra wide lens like the olympus. It may be a nice asset for sharing your journeys - and thanks again for sharing them!
Such good stuff. Please please please make these GDT episodes viewable again. Legitimately the best and most inspirational hiking content out there, sucks to think it may never be seen again. Much love brother ✌️
You added them back 💚 some of, if not, the best hiking cinematography on RUclips. Thank you, John. For being so noble.

your videos are so tasteful, beautiful and refreshing. Thanks for uploading! Hope to see more.
This video needs to win some sort of award. Groundbreaking comes to mind. Nice video.
This video is what made me decide to do this trail for my first thru hike. Man am I happy I watched this. Was the best experience of my life. Thanks for sharing!

Best video yet IMO, John! Great work.

Looks stunning! Your skill at cinematography is breathtaking. Keep up the great work! 😎
So glad to see you back at video production, John. Love your stuff, such a good eye for beauty
thanks for putting the links to these on your website!!!! i wasn't fortunate enough to have known about you a couple years ago so I've been scrounging to find anything that is still linked to online that might be unlisted to view these beautiful, inspirational videos.

This is really good stuff. And I don't mind waiting to see stuff with this god tier quality
thank you for making this video, completing this trail is my ultimate goal. im going to complete it only using primitive survival techniques
Oooooohhhhh, yyeeaaahhhhhh. I've been wondering when these would start showing up. This is gonna be gooood.
Hot damn. Backpacking has its peak. It's downhill from here.
Came for the scenery. Didn't expect the great dialog.
ha ya the chemistry is electric in that opening scene
Wow! Great pictures! Greetings from Germany
that camera work tho!!! you grew man!
Awesome! I've been looking forward to this since I first heard you were doing the GDT. I enjoyed Wired's description and photos from her 2016 through hike, but your videos are always awesome. I hope there's much more to come.
OMG these guys are so cute together. Like a brother hiking team. keep crushing huge miles guys.
To see pretty stuff, I love it! Such amazing shots on this trail!
Stunning work John
Great work as usual. It was nice to run into you at the start of your hike at the Many Glacier campground. Looks like we might have to put this trail on the top of our to do list. Keep the great vids coming.

F-in amazing! That was incredible! Can’t wait to see more! You killed it!! 👍
Damn that was beautiful! Cant wait for the full eps!
Keep them coming John. Awesome!
Love it. Fonts and colors have a Wes Anderson vibe :)
ooooh i like your new time lapse incoporations. :D
you hit the next level with this one!!
This is such a great short trailer for the GDT! The GDT Society should use this to promote it! I’m hoping to do this in the 2-3 years!
Awesome, can't wait to see the episode !
Omg that is such a beautiful trail 👣thank you for sharing 👏🏼
Been waiting for this one!!
so beautiful !
John your GDT vids are pure hiker porn, gorgeous footage ,) Must get boring having to look at the Canadian Rockies for weeks.
totally agree!
Dude, yes. This is gold
Looking forward to these...
wow, that is some beautiful country!
This looks incredible. I'm planning on a 70-90 mile backpacking trip late next July. I'm going with a friend who hasn't done a ton of backpacking. I'd like to show him some incredible scenery. Any recommendations on a section of the GDT to try out? We especially like areas with lakes.
i'd recommend the mount assiniboine area. lots of options with banff there too
Hey. Awesome video. Like your stuff. Trying to find the specific song in this video. I know its Rumtum but can't find it on band camp. Thanks for outing out such great quality videos.
Do you have a gear breakdown - that looks like a pretty light load. Thanks for the video - beautiful!
will make videos on gear soon. my website has my gear lists from this year -
- johnzahorian.com/gear-skills/gear-lists/
Took it to another level. Nice
great vid as always! definitely wanna do the GDT in the next few years
do it!
this is incredible!!!

I don’t see the trial, how do you know where to go?
New addition to future trails to hike.
This might be too techie a question but any tips on settings for the RX100 mark III for landscape photography and video capture? Got one recently but I'm so confused haha 😂😂😂
Probably my favorite video on youtube
Why only one hiking pole?
This is amazing man! What's one piece of advice you'd give someone thinking of taking this on? PS. I hear you may hold the FKT on this hike!
I'm glad that the videos are back but I wish they were a little bit longer than that.
all the upcoming episodes are 8 - 12 minutes
John, what is the song in your Q&A vids?
it's an unfinished / unreleased thing my friend made
damn some of these shots its like wow... he went through so much effort to have to go back and pick up his camera lol. the john z hiking shot
Nice! You looked a lil chilly out there, do you wish you had more clothing? or different seasonal window?
Keep it up man
i actually feel like i had exactly what i needed and stayed comfortable the whole trip. had a few heavier things with me to handle the expected weather like running tights, neck gaiter, and an inflatable pad
QUESTION, as far as level of difficulty, is this easier or harder than other trails you've hiked.
❤️😍❤️😍❤️ in love with the scenery.
it's pretty similar to the CDT, but a small bump up in difficulty
Link to gear list? Did you replace your RX100 with this new camera? Are there grizzlies out there? Bear spray? Great video!
johnzahorian.com/gear-skills/gear-lists/
i still have my rx100, i had been using this one for all my off trail stuff already. there are grizzlies. i didn't bring bear spray
Thanks for the gear list. I'm interested in your prototype shelter. How are you getting 7.5 oz? Does that include stakes? Easily the best hiking vids on RUclips. How you have only 13k subs is a crime.
Beautiful! Ps, what shoes do you hike in?
Thank you .. beautiful

Hi Nick
Hey!
Hi Kyle
Canadian mountains are bigger and better. After hiking here I would never settle for crappy little American mountains.
You need to get a life Ha!
