42 Days Hiking 1,200km - Great Divide Trail - Thru Hike 2023

- The Great Divide Trail is one of the most premier long distance hikes in the entire world. At 1,200km (or 750 miles) it's not as long as a trail like the Continental Divide, but it's certainly no slouch either. Passing through some of Canadas most popular and beautiful National Parks such as Banff and Jasper, the entire hike from start to finish is mind blowingly stunning.
My guide on how to hike the GDT (picturies, stats, gear, and info!)

My top gear picks for the GDT:
- Patagonia Rain Jacket - bit.ly/3ua4k7H
- Ursack Major XL Food Bag - amzn.to/47nbfIM
- Mosquito Head Net - amzn.to/46bpiAv
- Satellite Communicator - amzn.to/3SFnxbt

Hikers typically take 30 to 60 days to complete this trek on average, though an extremely fast hiker could conceivably do it quicker, and you could also certainly take longer. We took 42 days and felt that was a rather quick pace, for instance.
The entire trail is though prime grizzly bear country and moose are also commonly seen. A lot of caution must be taken because of this! Though in the end we only saw one grizzly and two moose, every single day of our hike we saw recent signs of both having been where we were just a day or hours prior. It was a mildly stressful thing given how large and dangerous those animals can be.
The permit system for this trail is the hardest part when it comes to planning and logistics. You have to purchase permits in (and earlier than) March, for a hike you won't even be beginning until July! They are costly (about 200 dollars) and confusing. But it is a necessary thing, especially so for places like Banff, and the Skyline Trail in Jasper. The GDTA have lots of great resources to help with this, and I would at the very least buy permits based on their example itineraries.
The trail itself is very difficult, much much more so than something like the Pacific Crest Trail. The trail is often not marked, often doesn't exist at all, and is often very overgrown when it does exist. The climbs can be extremely steep. The weather can be terribly unpredictable. You will almost never have cell service, and are rarely anywhere near roads, towns, or services and help of any kind. This is very much so a trail to plan for and prepare for because of these things!
That said, it is so ridiculously beautiful I think that anyone who is even sort of interested should go for it. You will never find another hike that is like this one. Challenging and magnificent. Glaciers, and massive braided rivers. Not seeing other people for days on end. Going 200km (120mi) between towns. Crazy amounts of wildlife and birds. It really is a special hike.

Hello! Thank you for being here :) This is a short overview of our entire hike, with some stats and info about the trail thrown in. Be on the lookout for the full 3 part series following our hike specifically
Excellent video! Really looking forward to the 3 part series:)
Planning on going next year. In the early planning stages. Do you think you'd be comfortable sharing your itinerary and gear list at some point?
Can’t wait!!!
Great video!!!
The scenery was superb as was the cinematography. I was just about to ask for more when I saw your post. Looking forward to your future segments.
That was gorgeous.....cant wait for the 3 part......Thanks for going the distance for all of us.....!!!!
Stunning country, Bad a$$!
Thanks for bringing us along....
Loved the intro look forward to your full GDT. The intro certainly shows the beauty of our Canadian Rockies❤
If I didn't need a break from Grizzly Country after the CDT this year, this would tempt me very much! It looks amazing, awesome job on the videos.
Haha! I know the feeling. I'd like to not carry bear spray or an ursack ever again, and yet here I am in the opposite shoes as you... looking at the CDT like.... that sounds pretty great
Jupiter & Sprocket, simply amazing! Out of all your videos I've watched this one showed the raw untamed beauty of the GDT and now is my favorite! I needs to be watched multiple times, thank for for taking us along with you again!
What an amazing way of showing the GDT, editing is excellent as usual, thanks for sharing your experience Jupiter, you’re always a great inspiration!
Amazing. Love the footage. Very envious. Your videos are always encouraging and great for the soul. Big thumbs up from New Zealand 🇳🇿
Mate, you're only one of the few you tube hikers I watch now. The editing, etc, is wonderful. No bollocks just wonderful experiences to enjoy. As always look foward to future films.
I only did day hikes while there, but Canadian Rockies will forever hold the title of most beautiful in my eyes. It is simply stunning- can’t wait to see the series!
It's always a good day when jupiter posts.
The text instead of narration is a cool artistic choice. Great vid
Thanks! The next ones will have more narration, but wanted this to be a bit different
As someone from Alberta the GDT is great to see! Can’t wait to hike this one day.
Exciting overview Jupiter
This trip looks amazing! 🙂

Beautiful work! We finished a week ahead of you guys, the day after the majestic volunteers flew out of section G. I proposed on the dock below the cabin at Kakwa lake to my soon to be wife. This real is magic incarnate.

Sweet man.
Good Job. Thank You for documentation of this trail. What's next? Idaho Centennial Trail ? Good Luck, and keep Hiking. 😊😊
Probably the Continental Divide, Te Araroa, or maybe a bikepacking trip
Very beautiful!
Despite living in Alberta and doing many long backpacking trips in the Rockies over the years, I’m always in awe of the beauty of these mountains.
A wonderful trailer! You left me in awe despite knowing what was coming. Really looking forward to the full series and hearing your interactions with this wild and rugged land 🙌
Absolutely amazing!
Let’s gOOOO! Awesome video. Super hyped to see more from your trip :)
Awesome can't wait for the series! I am planning on doing this in August/ September! 🎉
thank you for sharing, this looks awesome; really looking forward to more footage!
This is a world of difference from the East Coast trails with the blazes and shelters and frequent towns. I can imagine this just takes a lot more patience, planning, and perseverance. In any case this was a great video. I can imagine, this was a particularly difficult video to make.
Man, what a beauty of a hike. Definitely hanging out for the three vidoes.
I've been waiting for you to do this trail for so long, can't wait to watch this. I did most of section C this summer and planning on doing section B next season
Good job walking 🔥
I met your boy josh perry on the a t this year At standing bear hostel. It was pretty epic.
Im so excited to see this! Im planning my trip next summer!
Impressive scenery, I would definitely consider thru hiking this trail, God bless your excursions.
Great video! Cant wait to see the rest
Looks incredible! 🏞️
We completed the GDT this summer as well. We knew you both were doing it and hoped we would cross paths, but we finished a week before you. Maybe our paths will cross somewhere else. Well done and I look forward to the series to relive the epic adventure.
SWEET!❤
welcome back jupiter! the series all of us been waiting for!! so excited to see the journey 🤩
I have a lot filmed and am stationary for the winter! so a bunch of videos to come :)
Wow! Looking forward to the video series!
I am so looking forward to your videos, Jupiter. But, only three? :)
Yeah I personally prefer a more concise series over a 60 part-er. I could definitely stretch it out further, to be one video per section (7 total) but even that and I wonder if it makes the watching less accessible to others. Hopefully this way and more people will check out the trail as a whole, which is why I've done this short overview as well. Many will only see this! And I want them to get a good idea of what the GDT is, instead of watching just part one of 40 and not really getting anything from it.
I'm sitting here sobbing.
hi jupiter, how do you navigate? paper maps?
For a lot of trails I will just use an app like Farout as it's usually pretty good and available. For a more difficult hike like this I will pair that with Gaia so I can have varying map layers, and way more information to go off of. For an even harder hike than this, and yes I would use paper maps as well and have in the past. For the GDT though Gaia was the best and Farout was a nice addition.
Yeah boyyyyyyy
What's the great divide? Well I guess I'm going to find out. Hi from Ireland
It is a most wonderful trail in Canada! Grizzlies and glaciers. Off trail travel and incredible scenery. A real adventure in a remote place
bangarang rufio
first comment lol thanks jupiter
It was great hiking it the same year as you Jupiter! If anyone is interested I just posted a 40 minute documentary of our 37 day trip on the great divide trail this summer. We were four days behind Jupiter ❤
What was that footprint at 6:42??
A Grizzly Bear!
@@JupiterHikes Yikes. Those guys don't take prisoners.
What a beautiful declaration of love to the Great Divide Trail! It just looked stunning and quite diverse. It's added to my bucket list now.😊
Thanks for the video, Jupiter!

What an epic journey on the Great Divide Trail! The stunning landscapes and challenging conditions make it a truly unique adventure. Your detailed guide and gear recommendations are super helpful for anyone planning to take on this incredible hike. The encounters with wildlife and the breathtaking views from Banff to Jasper are just amazing. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Cheers,

What a beautiful film... and adventure, the GDT is an epic feat and accomplishment! This is in my backyard and I couldn't be more grateful to live and hike in such an incredible place.
Amazing, and your cinematography is really good. Enjoyed this immensely. Thanks.
Breath taking!!! Thanks!!!😊❤
Jupiter- your skill as a videographer, storyteller, and amazing team with Sproket make this one of the most heartfelt, and inspiring videos. I can feel it all the way from the Midwest!
Glad to see you posting and hiking again!
love this. I walked sections B and C finishing just as you started. I almost shed a tear.
Let me know if you will visit the Italian alps in the future
this was so beautiful, now I can't wait for the rest of the series
Spectonkular, and all that in a pretty frock!
Cool. Some new videos. It looks amazing. Looking forward to the 3 part series.
Cheers from LA.
So. You found yourself in some snow and cool temps. While hiking, what layers did you wear? T shirt, puffy, rain shell? Or? Did you keep anything in reserve for sleeping to stay warm? Thanks
I just had my tshirt, a fleece, and a rain jacket. Only wore the rain shell for bad weather, and only occasionally wore the fleece in the mornings. No extra clothes for camp!
Really cool you did this trail! We are planning on doing this in the summer :)
It's awesome! I hope you enjoy. I am currently writing a big blog post with a bunch of information that may be helpful for planning which I hope to have completed soon
@@JupiterHikesI’d buy an E book if you made One! ❤
NICE! Can't wait for the vids! We have done several parts of it already but plan to do it with the kids from end to end in 2025 or 2026.
Hello ! I'm a french people and I follow your stories. Thank's a lot for you share, I love it. Wonderful and huge country !
Just amazing filming and beautiful scenery. By far the best hiking videos. That bear didn't seem to be concerned with you. I believe the foot prints around the 7 minute mark is a Yeti print. lol I love goofing about Bigfoot evidence. All the best to you and thanks for sharing it with all of us.
Looking forward to the 3 part series. Congratulations.
Thanks how beautiful. Looking forward to seeing more
What a great summary! Can’t wait to watch the other videos! Thanks for sharing!
You guys rock! Can't wait to see the full series. Thanks for sharing.
very excited for the full series, and for a whole trip recap, i really liked this style of video. good work!
Awesome job to both of you!! Congrats on another thru hike!
This is beautiful, it feels like watching a film in a cinema 🏔🌲🌳🚶♀🚶📽
great video and scenery
Great job you two
Yessssss 🎉
Man... This is a rare beauty. Seems so remote and wild. Any advice on where/how to start for planning such a trip?
Yeah ! I am actually in the process of writing a big 'guide' of sorts with loads of info about everything. From permits, to gear, alternates, town info, etc. Hopefully will be done very soon, and will be posted on my website.
@@JupiterHikes 😮 nice!! Cant wait!
@skebqc my guide is now up! With all sorts of information that I wished I knew before I personally started jupiterhikes.com/2023/11/15/how-to-thru-hike-the-1200km-great-divide-trail/
@@JupiterHikes 😮 thx man!!
The GDTA (great divide trail association) has a website and they also seminars posted on youtube for everything you need to consider to plan and hike the trail. Just give them a google! lol. Also, Justin outdoors, a canadian youtuber from Calgary, has done the GDT and has an extensive youtube playlist for this trail.
Is it true you guys didn’t t book a single camping permit for the entire hike?
We booked them for Banff and Jasper, then got a couple others along the way when necessary. Otherwise planned to camp just outside park boundaries where possible.
I did a little bit of the GDT this summer. The section with the gnarly fords in Jasper - Chown Creek, and Carcajou Creek. An absolutely crazy moment in life crossing Carcajou. I spoke with an old-time warden after and he said he worries about that crossing because below it is a "Death Trap". He described it as a "Fast-flowing shotgun shoot down to the smokey river".
Those were some great river crossings hah! I had fun at Chown, but it scared sprocket pretty bad doing those late in the evening
