I've thought about making a video on this topic for a long time, but it always felt a bit too farfetched for me to really advocate for it, but since the topic came up in my reaction to Smoughtown's "The Choir and the Eldritch Truth," i figure why not edit down what I said about the "Make Contact" gesture in Bloodborne into an easily digestible video of its own.

I remember hearing something along the lines of "It's a reference to some scientists trying to think of ways to communicate with aliens and going with mathematical formulas, in this case a right angle, because it's a rare thing in nature to find one so it might suggest intelligence or purpose to an alien mind"
Right, that's a common theory, so I thought I should post this to give people an alternative perspective to consider
Who also unironically praises the sun and makes contact with the moon in real life?

Pagans, probably
I was just gonna post that. Bloodborne opened my mind. Do it all the time, midnight at the beach. No contact yet
They done experiments and some animals do understand reflections are reflections. Like they’ve used those apps that give you dog ears and cats have acted confused because they think the screen is supposed to be a reflection
Bloodborne is such a fucking masterpiece!
The more we try to decode the "Make Contact" gesture, the less it makes sense. I think it's a purposefully original invention for the BB world. The character ticks their 2 arms like a clock or something after a minute. The 2 parts of Make Contact's gesture make 2 squares/1 rectangle, if we consider possible geometric symbolism. It could be interpreted as a philosophically-driven symbolic gesture to prove our intellect as a species. You can even throw in theories regarding the Golden Ratio into the mix, and I'm sure that this arm-waving act is similar to something historical.
But the problem is that there aren't enough leads to give us an answer. It seems to be one of the purposefully-mysterious things in the game imo. I think that what your theory is very interesting though, and there could have been some cultural influence that lead to specifically "pointing gestures" and "the Moon Rune" being connected so intimately in-game.
There is also an argument that they are the school of Mensis as in table as in dissection table.
Its the weirdness of the right angle, as it is almost impossible in nature, but I think the story of a buddhist monk capturing the Moon in his hands is more interesting and perhaps more related. I remember it being something like this :
A buddhist monk laments about not being able to ever fathom all the intricacies of life, but a second monk says something like
"I can never hold the Moon in my hands, ..."
and proceeds to reach for the Moon, which is of course, too far. So he goes down to his knees, takes water in hands and stands up. Then he finds the right spot, so the Moon is being reflected on the surface of the water in his hands.
"... yet, here it is, in my palms."
So yeah, thats how you catch the Moon mofos ...
Nice videos. I definitely don’t think that’s a coincidence. And the switching of the hands with Make Contact almost seems to symbolize man’s desire to bring the moon down to themselves, while also ascending their nature.
Very interesting. So the idea would be something like this: The Brain of Mensis recognizes that the Moon is the underlying truth behind the character's gesture, because as a Great One it can discern reality from the reference. Then it speaks the word Moon, which is represented visually in the mind of the hunter as a rune, which fits because we know Caryll runes represent the speech of the Great Ones. Meanwhile, the gesture itself comes from the work of art and the Buddhist teachings presented. Is that about right? Based on the language involved, up to this point I've been partial to the radio signal analogy myself, but I admit I'm intrigued by this interpretation.
Also, as something of a tangent, I've always wondered if there's something to the angle that "mensis" is meant to have a short-term/time-based component to it. After all, it doesn't strictly mean "moon" either. It's a reference to a single lunar interval, which is why it's the word for "month" in Latin, and why it's the plural form (menses) that's more directly associated with menstruation. Of course, I've not yet been able to come up with something that satisfyingly explains that distinction, but I do wonder about it.
Anyway, thanks for posting the video! It's nice to see you do more work on Bloodborne.
I think by doing the gesture, we're pointing to a symbolic "moon," and reveal that we're trying to follow The Way to Enlightenment. The Brain might recognize that and it says "Moon" in acknowledgment of what the gesture is supposed to symbolize. It could just be a not-so-coincidence that the "enlightenment" the School of Mensis seeks is tied to the moon in their eyes...pun intended.
@@LastProtagonist Got it. Thanks for the clarification!
Went eepy right before this, thanks for making this a video!
Thanks
Now if only there was a "Mooning" gesture to make true contact with the brain
I remember hearing one person thought that the make contact gesture is supposed bto depict the moon traveling across the night sky
A: it looks like "praise the sun" when it's changing from one side to the other
B: you make the hunters runs with your body when it's changing from one side to the other
To draw the attention of that which is not human one must show a devotion to a strange dedication that i like to call alternative communication. Not necessarily a mathematical thing. That's not mentioned in the slightest ever in game as far as i know. Perhaps it's man trying to make its own rune? What could they possibly be doing? This curiosity might draw the attention of great ones perhaps? Who can possibly understand something as esoteric as a pro alien organization creating a specific gesture with such unclear motives.
Personally i enjoy the mystery remaining unclear, but the insight is fascinating.
Another Amazing Video!!
It's been a year since a bloodbourne vid, I'm very grateful lol
We getting an updated video on the architecture?
Pretty sure Mensis means Mind but Bloodborne will probably stay the most mysterious games ever 8 years later there are still mysteries that will never be answered
I think it is based on the book of the hounds of tindalos, in which these beings live in the angles of reality and we live in the curves, they enter our world through the angles, so the choir seeks to establish contact with an angle of 90 degrees (also reminds me of how the protagonist uses the Pythagorean theorem to communicate on the planet of the apes).
Edit: this book was written by an author in lovecraft's circle so I think it may have been an influence.
Another Incredible Video!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ 💖💖💖💖💖
