This should start a little trend! For the rest of the month, every BookTuber should make a video on something they've recently WATCHED rather than read. Out of the library, from their own collection, on TV, on cable, in the theaters - everybody should watch something and then make a video about what they thought!
There are so many movies being produced today that (in my opinion) it dilutes the talent pool. Not to mention the inexplicable self immolation that has occurred with several franchises (Star Trek, Star Wars, and Doctor Who). I did watch Gladiator II in the theatre...there's a couple decent scenes but yeah, it was bad! The sharks were SO awful they were actually entertaining! Great stuff Michael!
It's not inexplicable. People who actively hate those franchises want to re-write them to suit a particular agenda. The outcome was predictable for anyone who isn't as blinkered as they are.
@ I think the vacuum create in SF franchises by their self destruction, has set the stage for Warhammer 40k to step in and dominate. It's too bad Cavil and Amazon couldn't reach agreement!...but it will happen.
@@GrammaticusBooksI hope so. I really like The Guardians of The Galaxy trilogy. I wonder what Gunn is doing. Checking... Looks like a Superman movie. Well, someone needs to take on some real SF. Does not have to be a blockbuster, just something like the Australian "Upgrade", 2018 as I recall. Looper with Bruce Willis was great, Bruce did great with SF.
For the most part, the CGI in the original Gladiator holds up pretty well. So there's absolutely no excuse for it to be done so poorly 25 years later. I could even forgive the historical inaccuracies in the original. No excuse in the sequel though. He turned the inaccuracies up to 11.
A movie with good CGI that was done on a tiny fraction of a Hollywood budget was Godzilla Minus One...one of only two movies I have seen in the last two years! I recently watched two old movies that were creepy and great - The Night of the Hunter .....and The Innocents.....both highly recommended and can be found free.
The director for the Godzilla movie started in CGI which helps. In Hollywood they do it wrong often than not. It is well known that Marvel movies do their CGI scenes long before filming so they have to work around those scenes. Also they use so the studio can just change things at their whim.
I kept hearing that was good but haven't found it online yet. I barely keep up with movies anymore, so I didn't even know it was coming out until after it had left theaters.
Hey, thanks for another great video, which made me think of a possible book tube event: Books that became classic movies! MALTESE FALCON, REBECCA, PSYCHO, A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, THE EXORCIST, JAWS, THE GODFATHER... you get the idea. Each of these movies has countless videos about them, but far less about the books that spawned them. Would love to hear your take on some of these books!
Roger..movies...wait a second...is that the mummified corpse of Roger Ebert reanimated by dark sorcery gleaned from a grimoire you found at a shop that mysteriously disappeared the next day? Where the proprietor is named Mr. Lou Safer?
New movies do suck.. 1. Nothing original 2. Most new actors have no screen presence. 3. No practical effects, you can tell the actors are fighting a tennis ball. 4. Too many cooks in the kitchen, you can tell it’s not someone’s artistic vision. 5. Jurassic park is 31 years old! CGI went south fast.
Worry not, I rarely watch new movies. Most of the films I watch feature casts of dead actors, subtitles, stop-frame-animation, or if I'm lucky.. black and white, maybe even silent.
I watched a film called Contact last night based on the book by Carl Sagan. Very good film. Maybe talk about films based on the original book and make a comparison .
Jim Harrison wrote a great novella where the "werewolf" does suffer from a type of rabies. He also wrote and produced the Jack Nicholson movie, Wolf, which should have been very good but was completely messed up by the director.
Thanks for the video! Since you've talked about movies, it would be great to hear, Sir, your thoughts on "The whole wide world" (that old movie about Robert E. Howard) as a new installment of "The Robert E. Howard Show"?
Speaking of different takes on Dracula, have you seen " The Last Voyage of The Demeter"? It's loosely based on the Captain's Log chapter of the original novel. I'd love to hear your reaction. Nosferatu will be released on disc on 2/18/25. I'll watch it then. I don't go to theatres much because it's a 70-mile round trip for me. 35 miles to & from the theatre plus twenty bucks for a ticket. And let's not talk about gas. It's usually more economical just to wait for the home release.
Did you ever see the 1979 Nosferatu remake by Werner Herzog with Klaus Kinski? I was wondering how that compares with the new version. I read that Eggers evidently avoided watching the Herzog version, as he didn't want to be influenced by it.
This was very enjoyable and helpful. I - and I’m sure many others - wish you would do occasional but regular movie reviews - is once a month too much? It doesn’t have to be new movies, but older movies you like or find interesting or simply wish to comment on. Also, given your love of pulps and monsters, I’d love to hear your thoughts about Hammer horror films.
I was just saying this to the Husband here, that bad CGI throws off an entire movie. He recently had me rewatch his beloved Ray Harryhausen stop-action fantasies with him, which generally have a bit of charm because of the work and time. I have been in danger of my life for saying The Black Panther was not up to snuff. But how did Roger feel about Nosferatu? A werewolf isn't a supernatural being? Of course it's a curse! I am just appalled. I never go to the movies anymore. "GLADIATOR" was a remake of The Fall of the Roman Empire (1964) BTW, RUclips has a lot of old classics like AMC used to show, when it was about Movie Classics. Nice tie.
I feel the same about the overuse of all too often bad CGI. However, recently I have watched The Matrix and WOW has that movie aged well! It's old school special effects still outshine lots of newly CGI animated movies...
Ever since I started getting into film in the early 90s, I was always more interested in older films. It takes a lot more to draw me to a newer film these days. The new Nosferatu is certainly one I'm interested in, though I'm always a bit concerned when a horror film is that long. I'm not particularly interested in Wolf Man, cos Leigh (pronounced Lee) Whannell was partly to blame for the Saw franchise and he can go to hell for that. The idea of the werewolf not being supernatural doesn't grab me either. Of more recent horrors, I actually did like Werewolf by Night even though I'm not a Marvel fan; I'd also commend Train to Busan and the Japanese film One Cut of the Dead. I'm very much with you when it comes to CGI vs practical, and like you I think the fact that even a mediocre practical effect has the common decency to actually exist is a point in its favour. Who cares if it's an obvious model? We KNOW that's what it is, anyway. CGI these days has no business looking like shit. And even if CGI is more "realistic", it's still not actually *real*.
I tend to agree with your take on modern cinema. Lately, however, French cinema has produced a couple of literary adaptations. In the last couple of years, I have seen a French two part version of the Three Musketeers as well as the just released The Count of Monte Cristo. I found both to be fairly good adaptations of the books and certainly the best in decades.
I've never been a vampire fan. Not a horror fan in general. I especially can't watch things having to do with blood. But I'm glad you're saying this Nosferatu portrays him as a loathsome creature. That's how it always should have been! The fact that Hollywood took a creature that's basically a bloodsucking, evil, demon-like creature and made the various incarnations "sexy" always disgusted me. If you actually saw an "undead" creature that does what vampires do, you would be horrified!
What about all the classics you can watch at home. I got a lot of silent films and classic movies on Blu-ray and I love them. I like to switch between all the great media our times have to offer. 😅
Completely agree with your stance on modern day movies - there is a really excellent horror-western called Bone Tomahawk (2015) that was written and directed by S. Craig Zahler which I highly recommend. Zahler is also a novelist, having several books published; all of which are all terrific, check them out!
I agree with you. Current movies just don't do it for me, especially the apparent blockbusters. Smaller, character-driven movies can still give good value for your money. The last good movie I saw was The Holdovers with Paul Giamatti. Good episode, Michael!
I'm glad you like Nosferatu. I would like to hear what you thought of Shadow of the Vampire. It's a fictional story about the making of the original Nosferatu, but Max Shrek is a real vampire. It stars John Malkovich as the director and Willem Defoe as Max/Orlock. I will say i enjoyed the 2010 Wolfman. Anyway stay safe and happy reading.
Want to see Nosferatu. Saw Substance recently…and the directors previous Revenge… both gory… but really well made, enjoyable films. I think she’s a very talented director.
I find that the blockbusters, or big studio films tend to be quite bad or not interesting. Of course the more independent/smaller budget studios put out a lot of fluff, but they tend to be at least interesting.
Last film I saw in the cinema was The Substance about three months ago, which I thought was pretty good. I was thinking I might go see Companion this month (Barbarian, the director’s last, was good but flawed, but y’know, give people a chance to grow), but now I’m thinking I might bite the bullet and see The Brutalist. As to those three films, I frankly really have next to no internet. I myself did not care for The Witch, so I’m not that excited by Eggers. My first response to Gladiator 2 was: “But…Russell Crowe died at the end?” And then when I saw the trailer I immediately hated the guy playing the protagonist. He sounds drunk the whole time. And as to Wolf Man, we’ll, one werewolf flick is basically not much different from another. Filmmakers shouldn’t be afraid to get weird with werewolves like they did in the ‘70s-I’m thinking Werewolves on Wheels, or Wolf Guy.
I actually never saw the original Gladiator movie. Don't yell at me! It wasn't intentional. But for some reason I stopped this and went to see a clip of this sequel. I got through 55 seconds. Yegads, how horrible! (And I thought you were joking when you mentioned something about monkeys.) Speaking of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, I rewatched it last year (I think) after not having seen it probably in decades. I couldn't believe how well it stood up! It really is amazing!
GLADIATOR 2?? Why, Michael, Why?? I'll accept inebriation and/or momentary confusion when purchasing the ticket 😂... I am looking forward to NOSFERATU, however...
This is a sidebar to your talk about The Wolfman . Have you read Harlan Ellison's story, Adrift Off The Inlets Of Langerhans. Larry Talbot final solution to his problem. That I would like to see made into a film.
Of course there was a reason to make Gladiator 2- The Quest for more $ ! It was a poor movie that was obviously exploiting the success of the first one.
I am not a fan of new movies either and the only one out of the ones you watched I am sort of interested in is Nosferatu and I can wait till its free some day on a streaming service lol.
I was going to see Gladiator, clearly not now ! Just watched Nosferatu (original) which was excellent, can't wait to see the new one on 4K - what I have seen so far suggests it is going to be great. Did enjoy the Last Voyage of the Demeter as well on bluray
I’ve not see a movie since heath ledgers joker. I moved on to anime and Asian films if I want new. But generally now I watch talking pictures and digital channel for an old films and tv shows. Oh no I tell a lie I did watch the three Ironman films I guess parts of the first Thor film and parts of the avengers film not because I really wanted to but as they were on tv and meh. Flicked through channels just caught the first few minutes of wonder women that turn off as no good message in Diane never got punished once for miss behaviour as child so she hat was a no.
I rather like the 2010 remake of The Wolf Man. Have zero interest in seeing this latest version, which is weird because usually I'll see anything vaguely wolfy in nature!
Gladiator II would have been better as a comedy. I'm full on anti-CGI. Too many flms are putting the effects before the script and plot, and producing rubbish. They need to be saved from themselves. I can't think of a successful Werewolf film, they're always quite bad, Teenwolf excepted 🤭

So true. More so with TV shows! I now feel the need to watch a Doug McClure lost world movie 😮
Christopher Lee is still my favorite Dracula.
