Well it honestly depends how you want to look at it since Ojiro left it up to interpretation! How I see it is that they're still together but perhaps Ganta was reminiscing the past here and that would explain some of the panels. If you really are looking for an answer though perhaps wait for the volume release (Oct 12), she might add an extra epilogue/chapter.
@@vini0798 Hey! So the volume did come out (in Japan that is). The extra chapter was not really content for the main 2 characters but rather Shiromaru. Other than that, the only difference I could find in the volume release is that the final chapter's name was changed from Kuyo no Hoshi to Fuku Hoshi(福星), which I'm pretty sure means lucky star or star of luck. There might be significance there with a Chinese 'deity' called Fuxing but I don't think so.
Honestly I feel they are together The tweet by ojiro is a nail in the coffin. Even if we ignore the tweet ... the final arc's theme only was nakami finally overcoming his childhoos trauma and self depracation and coping up with trauma. Its hopeful thematically and wonderfully concludes both the characters arc. I mean the entire sequence of ganta with shiromaru, kurashiki and his dad means that nakami has finally fixed his "flaw" which can prevent any sort of mishaps in their relationship(ie naivety and putting burden on himself) Ganta matures to learn to live with magari and his disease meanwhile also overcoming his presure and childhood trauma. Magari realises that it is ok to rely on others and her condition doesn't mean she is being left out. I feel it would be odd writing to have magari dead after such profound character arc or them breaking up. Because both of em got their shit together and apologized. Theres no "flaw" left in their relationship (because they overcame it) for them to break up.
SPOILER: Magari is at least confirmed to be alive by the Mangaka herself on Twitter. She also said that they are living happily together, though whether she means as partners or as friends is anybody's guess. Also the kanji used for Kuyo is not the same as the one that is used for the buddhist Kuyo memorial ceremony. The Kuyo used is actually in reference to the Kuyo Tamoe, the spiral symbol that represents the reunification of the nine stars in Japanese Buddhism.
Her tweet sorta ruined the ending for me personally. If they’re at best still together and unmarried (and at worst separated but still friends) then many of the ending details don’t make much sense other than just to be vague. For an impressively realistic depiction of a relationship, them separating (but surviving) would have likely been accepted (and made it one of the most unique romance manga endings). But it felt like the ending wanted to be open to interpretation at the cost of not satisfying anyone. Reading the tweet literally, I guess they never married (not impossible given Nakami’s view on marriage from his mother) and just don’t take photos together (?). Also, dude seems to be doing well in his Arcteryx jacket. So either Magari’s ballin enough to not need shared health insurance, or they suddenly became grossly irresponsible adults.
@@requiemforameme1 Mhm, I honestly did not expect her to straight out tweet that; perhaps she really just didn't have a concrete conclusion in mind. I think that also might just be her style of doing endings as I've heard. I'm not sure how you arrived to the conclusion that they're not married though. x.com/nekoteraphoto/status/1725347608213041399?s=20
@@SadacadoIt was the focus on their hands (especially Nakami) in the ending chapter. They could just not wear rings, but it’s pretty uncommon in Japan. Thanks. I was not ready to accept theory about her death. My anxiety after the manga ending was so high, that i spend about 3-4 hours to find different explanations of this. Your one is sounds great. Now i feel better.
Please excuse my Japanese. If I were to express my own opinion, I would say that after graduation day it is a parallel world. This is because Magari wears a ribbon only on the day of graduation. I think the world where Magari is wearing a ribbon is the world line where Magari survives, and the world where she is wearing a tie is the world line where she is not. Also, I don't think the final scene of crossing seven bridges takes place immediately after the graduation ceremony. On the day of the graduation ceremony, I wore a blazer during the day, but when I crossed the Seven Bridges, I didn't wear a jacket. Graduation ceremonies in Japan are usually held around the end of March, but the nights are still cold during this season. It's unnatural to be without a jacket. Furthermore, as mentioned in the story, the wish to cross seven bridges should normally be made in September. In other words, the seven bridge crossing was an event that occurred in the fall of the world line where the ribbon was worn. In the world of ribbons, wishes are fulfilled. So survive. However, in the world of neckties, people often give up on their wishes. So she didn't survive.
I think it's a happy ending,, although I am not sure i just want to belive she survived... Maybe she did survived the mangakar did it on purpose 😐they said the surgery was a success right? Maybe she survived another 12 years.. If we take that in simple way or maybe it's just a simple ending! We are overthinking it just because her face was not shown at the end.. It's been one year since the last chapter arrived and yet I have re watched the series and completed the manga again and hell no! The ending still can't get over it.
I finished watching the anime yesterday and immediately read the entire manga afterward. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the story until the very end, but I cannot help but feel a sense of discomfort due to the open-ended conclusion. The final chapter felt rather peculiar. The author tweeted that the characters are living happily, but whether they are a couple or just friends remains a mystery known only to her. The panels and artistic choices employed in the final chapter did not resonate well with me. It seemed as if the author intended to conclude the story with a tragic ending but felt pressured to avoid upsetting the readers. As a result, the ending was left as open-ended as possible. In my opinion, a bittersweet ending where Isaki passes away and Ganta moves on to have a successful career would have been preferable to the ambiguous and unsatisfying conclusion that the author ultimately provided. Unfortunately, it appears that this story has fallen victim to the dreaded "blue balls" ending.
Wait..... so they broke up and did not come back together in the final chapter?
