Hey Tim, great video! I have 5 yrs of PT experience, in South Carolina, just switched to home health full time, and am making approx $103,000/yr being paid per visit rate. Average hours per week is 35.

Esha all pts are worth different amounts but you can see around 6-10 pts in a day if you go from 9am-5pm. It also depends how far your pts are in regards to distance.

Tony Rawlins so with our company if you meet the minimum requirement of 30 units per week (6 regular visits per day) you would end up around $90k as a new grad. You can make more if you want.

Nice video. Your are correct these web sites need to be updated. These current median salaries are way too high with the current changes in insurance reimbursement in all PT environments which include inpatient, outpatient and Homecare ✌🏻

In Florida outpatient clinics pay $75-100k per annum plus benefits if you have a solid resume and negotiation skills. Home health: $90000-110000 for a full time salaried position plus benefits. Employers are willing to pay more during season (winter) as the need is higher. Its always best to look at the entire package rather than just base salary.

@@romang9183 Boca Raton will also have good jobs. I have not personally lived or worked there. Spanish is more needed in Florida as a second language.
Hey Tim , I’m in my finals in B. PT can I work while running my DPT in USA? I’m moving to United States
2nd year PT student here. Im debating on using my last rotation (14 weeks) to go home health in hopes of making in roads to try and get a job. Is this wise? Or is a waste of time and I should pursue where all jobs seem to be in outpatient?

In the outpatient clinics here (in Canada) you can work as an independent contractor and easily make $80-00 to $100,000 per year if you work full time.
That’s awesome! Outpatient clinics usually pay much less than 100k for new grads especially. But there’s no doubt you can earn 100k a year in outpatient clinics in the US if you find per diem or contract jobs. Thanks for your comment!

Starting pay for outpatient PT can range from 85-95k here in the Central Valley in California. Living expenses aren’t the best though

Hey Tim, I’m a 1st year SPT and when I’m not studying I try to research jobs in PT so that I have some sort of idea of what will be fulfilling yet lucrative when I get out of school. My conclusion so far for me would be to work fulltime/part time in an outpatient clinic to develop my skills but also work per diem either in acute care or home care in order to keep my pockets full. Does this sound ridiculous or does it seem like a good idea? Also I’ve been trying to research PT jobs with a pension system built in but they are few and far between and I’m wondering if you have suggestions about that as well.
Hey Giancarlo! Thanks for commenting. A few things: 1. Keep your costs as low as possible now so you have as little debt as possible later. 2. Live like a student when you graduate. Don’t buy a new car. Attack your debt to pay it off fast. 3. Job plan sounds good. Working weekends in home health it SNF would probably bring in an extra 3-4K a month. It’s not going to be glamorous and you’ll be tired. But your friends will also be tired of paying down their debt for 5-10 years while you’re debt free in 3 years. 4: Don’t worry about a traditional pension. Most places offer a 401(k) or nonprofit version called a 403(b) retirement plan. Sign up for that right away, get the match, and focus on your debt. Then focus on saving 10-20% of your income once your debt is paid and you’ll likely have a couple of million in your retirement account. The math isn’t hard. The behavior is the hard part to master. Establish good saving/spending habits early on and avoid doing stupid things with your paycheck and you’ll be debt free and on the right track sooner than many of your colleagues. Hi Tim, how much more are PTs getting paid over PTAs on average? I'm contemplating if the PTA route would be a better choice for me. I have an undergrad Bachelors degree in Business which means I would need an extra year or 2 to fulfill prereqs and then 3 yr DPT program. As for PTA, I would only need to complete a Health Professions exam, 20 observation hours then 2 yr PTA program if accepted. Not to mention, the cost would be about $100,000 less for the PTA program if I get in. My overall GPA is about 3.4 now so I'm not sure if that's competitive enough for the Public in-state DPT programs. I'm mainly interested in providing treatments/exercises to patients is what draw me to physical therapy. Any advice would be appreciated. - Eugene
I'm a PTA in Maine. I don't make a ton less than the DPTs. Started at 48k, now at 58k. I work outpatient. Could make more in home health or SNF, but I currently really enjoy my job.

When you graduate from the dpt program, is there a better program (so to say) to get a job from? Like would it be better to get a job for outpatient care rather than one of the other two mentioned?
Depends on the type of work you want to do. Working as a PT in an outpatient clinic will be much different than a job in home health. You can do either job as a PT regardless of what PT school you go to. Many PTs work different jobs and in different specialties throughout their career. Some stay in the same clinic the entire time. My best recommendation is to shadow multiple clinics and settings before you decide to pursue PT :)

which of these majors and minors would you recommend for me to become a physical therapist?
Honestly with all those majors you will likely have to take classes outside the course requirements for the degree in order to satisfy the prerequisites. The most popular for PT applicants is exercise science or athletic training. A minor in nutrition would be super interesting. Honestly, I think programs love brining in students with different perspectives. So you can still get a degree in nursing or something unrelated like finance and get into PT school. I say pick a major that’s interesting to you but also gives you opportunities besides the one track of PT. Even if you’re set on PT, it’s great to enter the field with different skills and educational backgrounds because you’d be surprised how much it can help you in your career. Thanks for your question! Yeah. I was going for DPT. I have a bachelors, and grad school is a minimum of 100k for tuition plus interest, and then factor in living costs, so rougly 150k dept for a DPT, which you can learn how to do on your own time for free. The debt to income ratio is insane and not worth it. I know many PTs leaving the field and going back to school for PA or another career. Pts also do not make that great of money. The PTs by me complain about not having enough money, and on top of that they dont even have full medical benefits. PTA start at $15/hr, which is minimum wage. I live NY which is one of the highest paid states.

Code? You got a BS in computer science? Self-teaching is the way to go or bootcamp if you don’t. It’ll be a long struggle. As for physical therapy, 9% reimbursement cuts are affecting PTA’s.

There’s no difference in the training you’ll receive in PT school. You can choose to market your therapy services to dancers in the area you’re in, partner with a dance company or theater, or even start your own practice or side hustle. The nice part about the field is that you are a general practicing PT but can specialize if you want in areas like performing arts relatively easily based on your interests and knowledge of the field.

You first need to get your bachelors which takes about 4 years and then you can go to PT school which is another 3 years
You can either get your college Bachelors first or look into 3;3 PT programs in the US

I'm Army and when I got into PT school they wouldnt assist as there isnt a need (so I didnt go). You can try for the Baylor program but they only take top candidates. Consider PA school. Military has a need for those and will pay, it is 1 year less of school, and you'll make a lot more money. Good luck!

Sadly, I would agree. Salaries for other healthcare providers seem to be higher than physical therapy, and I'd have to say we have alot of responsibility for not a lot of pay.

Very true. While I am a foreign-graduate without any student loans and spent a tiny fraction of how much it costs here, my american co-workers are in debt! They pay so much money per month for the student loans

It’s because of the reimbursements. But I think pay is pretty good. I make almost $120,000/year. and schedules are very flexible

Yeah, you wont be able to work in U.S. with just a bachelors. You need a doctorate unless you go into pta, but they barely make any money, so good luck surviving in america making $15-20/hr.
Most need a Masters or a Doctorate level degree. You may want to see if they will allow you to sit for boards, if so you many not need any additional schooling
General Haze which is very possible anybody that tells you otherwise has kids or lives somewhere expensive. The problem is we think we need more than we actually do, it just depends on how much you work and what you do with that money.
