  • Canyoneering Hog Canyon - Hog 2 - North Wash, Utah
Canyon 2 of the day. I've been to the North Wash before, but haven't done the Hog canyons before. We picked Hog 4 & Hog 2. Good choices.
But something was wrong. I was fine in Hog 4, but during the sneak route out of the canyon to get up and tackle Hog 2, I started feeling....just off. I know myself. And I wasn't feeling right. There were three choices: 1. Once at the rim of the canyon, walk up to the truck. 2. Do Hog 2 and take the sneak route back up to the truck. 3. Do Hog 2 and walk out the relatively flat Hog Springs trail to the rest area, while my partners climbed back and brought the truck around.
Here was my logic; I know my limits in this type of thing. I felt confident I could make it through the canyon. As the most experienced of the group, I didn't want my canyoneering partners to do the more difficult Hog 2 without me. I decided I would do that canyon, and make my decision on the exit at the bottom. Right, wrong or indifferent, that's what I did. I made it through the canyon without too much trouble, but still felt off. So at the bottom, I decided on Option 3. If the only option was to make the sneak route back out, I probably would've done the canyon anyway, and just taken my time on the sneak route. Knowing my canyoneering crew, they were going, with or without me, and I couldn't help but feel a little responsible.
Might not have been the best decision making, but it's what seemed right at the time. One thing I learned; bring a water filter. I think my problem was heat exhaustion and we didn't have adequate water. The best option would have been to filter the water out of the creek and rest in the shade until I felt better. But by not bringing that piece of gear, I didn't have that option. Hindsight is always 20/20.

Love the hog canyons. The elevator down climbs are no joke

They're a trip. This is where my wife and I took a course years ago to get into canyoneering. I remember our instructor explaining "Just...make yourself bigger and slide down. Worst case you may get a blood nose or something." My wife and I just looked at each other and thought he was insane. Of course, by the end, we were hooked and this is one of my favorite places.

All the signs of heat exhaustion and dehydration. I do not care how much you have to go pee after the fact, my personal take on temperature management and hydration is that you have to stay oversaturated with H2O and keep cool. Here in Florida I hike in 97F temperatures with 70% humidity and its a bear. Better to be vigilant than have a med evac your corpse stuck in a fetal position if you know what I mean.

Yeah, I've since learned that I can't keep pace with my canyoneering partners. So I just go at my own pace. Otherwise, I tend to push myself too far, like I did this time. But I was at least smart enough to skip the brutal, open sun sneak exit and go out through the canyon in the shade, by the creek. Which I would have jumped in if I didn't feel better fast.

If I did, it wasn't too bad. I'm really thinking it was an onset of heat exhaustion. My canyoneering partners are REALLY fast too. Trying to keep up on that aggressive uphill didn't help.
