It was a Saturday in 1987 and i'm on my way to the launderette to do my weekly washing. I'm thinking i know ima get bored out my mind waiting for this machine to run it's washing cycle so seeing i live only 2 minutes away i decided to go home and get my ghetto blaster. Back now in the launderette i'm tuning in to pirate radio. I found Faze FM and this track come on. I'm thinking what the hell is this?...So i turned it up. It was a bright sunny day so had the door open. Next thing people started coming in to listen to what i was playing. I kid you not, within 3 minutes of this track being played at least 10 people came into that launderette, not to do washing but to sit down, skin up and nod their heads..Even more surprising their was a pub directly opposite across the road and people from there started coming over too. within half n hour at least 100 people were now outside the launderette actually dancing to the pirate station. What makes this story special is this track is associated as turning point in music - A change of mindset, a dance music revelation of sorts with Detroit Techno, something that was completely unheard of back in 87' as was Acid House too. These times and music were the fuse that was put in place to ignite and trigger dance music like never before. From Detroit to UK to Clink Street to Dungeons, the dance has arrived and we gonna give it some proper. Stellar post as usual Rene' - In my opinion the only channel that keeps the oldskool House/Techno alive. Bravo mate...Good to hear from you again. ❤❤❤💯 🎶 🎼🎶
This story is a testament to the impact this sound had on an emerging dance scene still in its embryonic stage and it wasn't until the 90's that Techno fully incited pandemonium on Europe’s dance floors. Of course in between we had 'that' Album from Derrick May, Juan Atkins, and Kevin Saunderson Blake Baxter , Eddie Fowkes, and some of these tracks were never to see their own individual release. in '88 and it was clear there was a new genre of music that was here to stay . For me the clue was in the title 'Rhythm 'is Rhythm as this was a sound that emphasised rhythm over the preceding 80's synth based Chicago house musical components of a track. It was rhythm melody and harmony as we had never heard before . There was a stall in peticoat lane where there was a vendor who was playing the Techno Album The New Dance Sound Of Detroit on the Sharp vertical record player i remember the crowd of around 50 people staying to listen to both sides utterly enthralled by the revelatory sounds coming out of the speakers , i also remember bustling my way to the front to badger him to play 'It is what it is' again but he wanted to let the album play for the crowd which was fair enough. Glad you enjoyed this particular trip down memory lane Tam which God willing will not be the last and as we said thirty years ago a big shout out to you 👊
