Matt this is my favorite song that you sing .... your vocals bring out the pain and the sorrow that Willy must have been feeling when he wrote this .... Amazing ..Thank you
Once I was a rich man, A gambler was my game ‘Til I saw her cool beauty Inside her danced my flame And I watched till my desire Was turned from me to her And she watched till I was blinded And then she left me there Give her diamonds for her fingers And rhinestones for her hair Give her dresses for her body But don’t ever give her care Shell curse you and shell haunt you And shell do it with a smile Even when you’re on the long road And been down it many a mile I gave her all she needed I loved her all I could But she wanted more boys And I never understood And the times that I would leave her I never could decide Whether I was gone for good then Or just for one last ride Give her diamonds for her fingers And rhinestones for her hair Give her dresses for her body But don’t ever give her care Shell curse you and shell haunt you and shell do it with a smile Even when you’re on the long road And been down it many a mile
i have the matt andersen album coal mining blues which this is on. in the book it says this was written by willie p bennett. just to clarify this argument
Several different versions of the lyrics out there. Only common lyrics between some is a character named "Diamond Joe". Like "State Of Arkansas", this version by Bennett doesn't even have a DJ character. These lyrics were original, thus the credit. Arrangements and chords have also varied.- Even the vocal melody a bit. (worldwideweb).clearlight(dot)com/~acsa/introjs.htm?/~acsa/songfile/DIAMONDJ.HTM

Mat, you rock man!
Keep rocking us please!
Once I was a rich man,
A gambler was my game
‘Til I saw her cool beauty
Inside her danced my flame
And I watched till my desire
Was turned from me to her
And she watched till I was blinded
And then she left me there
Give her diamonds for her fingers
And rhinestones for her hair
Give her dresses for her body
But don’t ever give her care
Shell curse you and shell haunt you
And shell do it with a smile
Even when you’re on the long road
And been down it many a mile
I gave her all she needed
I loved her all I could
But she wanted more boys
And I never understood
And the times that I would leave her
I never could decide
Whether I was gone for good then
Or just for one last ride
Give her diamonds for her fingers
And rhinestones for her hair
Give her dresses for her body
But don’t ever give her care
Shell curse you and shell haunt you
and shell do it with a smile
Even when you’re on the long road
And been down it many a mile
very thanks!!!
This and broken man are very real songs .. Thank you Matt
And this has gotta be one of my favourites.
The name of the song is "Willie’s Diamond Joe". It's on Matt's new CD "Coal Ming Blues"
You're both right. this is Willie P Bennett's version of the classic tale of Diamond Joe. Willie P was a great Canadian songwriter.
Ross Neilsen like you’d know.
