BYU Football's 2024 Outlook Per Phil Steele Concerning With Big 12 Pressure | BYU Cougars Podcast

- The BYU Cougars outlook for this fall is not great if you believe what college football guru Phil Steele has to say in his annual preview magazine and Jake Hatch understands why he may be down on Kalani Sitake and the BYU football program, but adds that it should serve as motivation for the entire program to go out and prove they aren't as bad as many believe they are.
Jake then continued his positional preview series with a look at the BYU cornerback unit, which is headlined by star Jakob Robinson and while he is expected to showout in the Big 12 Conference this fall, the concern is the other bodies in the group have injury concerns, leading Jake to believe that Jernaro Gilford may need to add a guy to the mix late.
Finally, the show wrapped up with some thoughts about top-rated 2026 tight end prospect Brock Harris, who is currently at Brigham Young University (BYU) at a BYU football camp and turning heads once again and it would behoove BYU to do everything they can do to secure his commitment to bolster their talent base with a legacy prospect.

When did we become a fan base content with 5 or 6 wins. Maybe I was spoiled as I grew up and we were being Miami, Notre Dame, K-state and the like winning conference championships. I get that we are in the big twelve but now we are content with being mediocre. Wow why did we allow Crowton to destroy a reputable program for so long. Have Bronco build us back up and punch above our weight class only to loose him and again have mediocre hires not at the top but positional coaches destroy us again. I'm so sick of the I'm content with bowl eligibility and six wins. If the Bball team goes off this next year or two maybe BYU will finally realize what they should have done when bronco left. We shall have to cross our fingers and see.
Amen Woodhouse.... It's been MIND BLOWING what is being pitched by the Football program and our Blue Goggle strapped Media the last couple years and more specifically the last season. Funny how they all claim the Offensive Line was only bad last year. BS.... It was TERRIBLE the year before as well. You need look no further than the Running Game then as well! The Word Play and Mind Games being played is seriously the only thing that is Elite with this Program right now. BYU has the Talent Level of Players to do FAR BETTER. If we have two down years in a row in the BIG 12 that's going to stifle any momentum and BYU will be Basement Dwellers until there is significant change in the program overall....
@@defylogictech A-Rods has been a major disappointment!!! We fired Funk deserving so but that was just to cool the fire around A-RODS PLAY CALLING, RECRUITING AND INABILITY TO SCHEME AROUND HIS OFFENCE TALENT??? What's worse is when A-ROD gets canned this year is that next year we are going to be learning a new offense putting us another year behind??? so frustrating....
A 1-3 start is not outside the scope of probabilities. QB play, O-line, a defense that will stop the other teams drives. We shall see, but 5-7 May be the top of the line for the 2024 season. Hope I am dead wrong but not holding my breath.
This year is bowl game or bust. Anything beyond that is gravy.
This coaching staff isn’t THAT incompetent. They could drop SMU or Wyoming, but they won’t drop them both.
@@gfamadventures5649 I hope they win them both, could they, yes, could they lose them both, yes, just have to wait and see.
... or BYU football does what basketball did last year and exceeds expectations. That's what I'm predicting!
I think the hiring of Kevin Young has increased the bar of expectations for the rest of the BYU head coaches and their athletic efforts. Fans are starting to demand similar expectations for the other sports at BYU. The question is...will the fans be satisfied in their expectations? Fan expectations are not always the same as media expectations. Coach Sitake has enormous pressure to elevate the football team to the level the basketball team is already on a trajectory for.
Suggest more Jeff Hansen on your podcast.
More Jeff Hansen, less Connor Pay.
@@scottbjohnson6646more Conor Pay, less Scott Johnson 😂
@@brandonl2555 I am fine with that…it took me this long to see your comment…
@@scottbjohnson6646 you are right about more Jeff Hansen. He should be a weekly guest
BYU has had the best recruiting class with some really good starters coming back and a chip on their shoulder. That’s great and I think that’s going to help but we’re assuming that’s going to be the golden ticket for them and get them more wins which is possibly could. Keep in mind though that ALL TEAMS not just byu feel the same way and are more established with their team. BYU will get the best version of every
Team they play st home. The question is can byu stay injury free until then?
Best recruiting class? At best they had the 5th or 6th best in the conference and are in the 40s nationally.
Hey Beau.... I had to rub my eyes when I read your post. LOL Thanks for the 'real' comments instead of the 'troll' comments. It's going to be an interesting year. Personally, I don't think ARod has his head screwed on right to retain his job. I hope I'm wrong. Not getting any real 'critiques' from the press where they seem to just brown nose ARod and Kalani doesn't help anyone, especially ARod. I don't wish bad performance on anyone. But ARod needs to prove a couple things this year. That he actually can kraft and teach the QB position is first. I'll be blown away if he steps back to Retzlaff when he has Bohanon there but ARod opted for Retzlaff over Slovis the last 3 games last year and no I'm not buying into the 'Slovis was injured' BS being pitched. Slovis has not once admitted he was too injured to play those last 3 games. ARod has some really great talent on offense and there is NO WAY the Offensive Line can be as bad as last year, so ARod will have no excuses come QB play I'm thinking. Second, Can he scheme around some of the elite talent that he has instead of reverting to a panic driven 'puka jet sweep left, puka jet sweep right' when things start falling apart? The last couple years whatever he has done has face planted... We'll see what happens...
@@defylogictech listen at the end of the day I want all Utah football teams to do well of course I’m a Utah fan, but I have a lot of respect for BYU football as well.
All I know is this is probably the first time in my life I’m going into the season more negative than positive. And while I hope it doesn’t come to this, there could come a point where tanking might start to feel like the better option
…you realize that this isn’t professional sports…and therefore “tanking” doesn’t get you better recruits…right?
@@brandonl2555 you do realize that tanking is the only quick way to get rid of your coach, especially at BYU where 5-7 seasons don’t exactly put you on the hot seat?
Jake, I think the big question BYU football fans have is...How do we turn BYU football into the "best place to prepare young men for the" NFL? I personally would imagine that Andy Reid and Mike Holmgren who are both BYU alumni and Lavell Edwards proteges would have a part to play in such an effort with Coach Sitake and his staff.
I luv out west cfb. Imo '24 Wyoming should regress and be an 'auto' 'W' for a highly-flawed '24 Cougs' squad.
6-6 is a rebuilding year Jake. Just a fact. WHY? Because IF we happen to win the first three games, which is a BIG IF... That means we will only win 3 games in a 9 game BIG 12 conference schedule and FRANKLY? THAT ISN'T COMPETITIVE. PERIOD. IMO we need to be 5-4 in Conference to even use the word 'competitive' in the BIG 12... If we beat Utah as HUGE as their heads are right now? Maybe 4-5 in Conference is enough to save ARod's job. But 4-5 with no Utah win? There should be some BIG changes at the top no matter what happens the first 3 games of the season....
SO STINKIN WHAT!! LOSE OR WIN, LOVE BYU 4 LIFE!!! TRUE BLUE BYU FAN!!!!
🤣🤪
A few wins early on will change perspectives
No it won’t in fact it’ll do the exact opposite like it’s done all these past years you play really easy-going teams the first beginning of the year and then you actually get into conference play and you get crushed lol. Look at the season you guys win two and seven conference play, but you guys have those games
The word "dearth".... is pronounced like "earth" with a "d" in front of it.
If we go 4-8 ARod is gonna be gone
If we go 4-8, Sitake should be gone along with ARod.
There needs to be a wholesale change in coaching staff if we go 4-8.... ARod needs to be down the road at 6-6 and Kalani on the hot seat. If we beat Utah and are 6-6 then Maybe Arod has another Hot Seat year. All the talk has been about being 'competitive in the B12'.... If BYU goes 6-6 and wins it's first 3 games? Then BYU will have won only 3 games in a 9 game conference schedule and THAT ISN'T COMPETITIVE and people need to stop thinking like it is...
The cougers should have stayed independent. 10 wins = great season . 8 wins = bad season. In the big 12 , power 5 they had 3 wins . Could easily had been 1 win.
Byu is going 8/4
Everyone overreats to how many wins their football team has done the previous year. BYU will win at least 4 games. Then there are 4 more toss-up games. Those games will be decided by luck, injuries, and coaching. Last years offense line coaching wasn't good. The last 2 games BYU played were tossup games. This year, there is experience at every position. I believe Phi Steele greatly underestimates the returning recievers. BYU has the quarterback working with them all summer. I believe that work will pay off.
Good take!
You are a true blue BYU fan or not!! We don't need bad vibes! We don't need you, Fans or players!!
6 wins would be awesome
