Great documentary! I’ve lived here all my life, and I love it. Most people don’t realize the absolute beauty of New Jersey. Also, under the Pinelands is 17 trillion gallons of the purest water in the country, maybe the world.
Im a native of tabernacle. We're calld THE GATEWAY TO THE PINES. I love these words. Played in these woods. We were nvr not in them as kids in the 90s. Soo much history in them. Very unique and unforgiving in some areas. Beautiful isn't a strong enough word to describe the scents, sights, and experiences you get when hiking the trails that date back to before the Revolutionary war. U can start in our woods and take them all the way to the shore. If anyone reading this ever visits south Jersey check out carranza memorial. So much history
Whoooa... sounds so cool... growing up in those woods like the way you describe. I'm sure it's not all sunshine and beautiful flowers....harsh winters see to that I'm sure! I'm from Phoenix Az....I got to visit my Grandma's house in Olympia WA (R.I.P) Her house was 5 miles from town, on a 10 acre lot with South Puget sound access....every 40-45 minutes you'd hear or see a car drive by....so rural.... I won't soon forget her or her property. I love you grandma.... I'm sorry I didn't come see you ❤️🩹❤️🩹❤️🩹❤️🩹
I started seeing the Pine Barrens in the 50s. My Philadelphia family used to spend 2 weeks each year at Long Beach Island and we drove through it. I remember it as a sort of spooky wasteland of burned out trees sitting in lots of swamp. I had no idea people lived there, much less prospered and had their own unique culture about which they are so proud. Thanks for the documentary.
My heart skipped many times watching this awesome video. The personalities presented were so unique and the campfire stories were priceless. I have seen so much devastation of natural surroundings in my life… stay strong everyone who loves this place… in deep appreciation from New Zealand… well done ❤
I'm a Connecticut Yankee who first heard of the Pine Barrens in New Jersey about 40 years ago. I read up on its history and its people and thought "what a gem of a place, truly unique on the East Coast!" Most people I asked over the years (from New Jersey) never even heard of the place. I hope the Pine barrens and the people that call it home are left alone from big business and big government. It appears that the residents that live there are the only ones that know the value of the Pine Barrens. Leave it to them to live life as they please.

My daughter used to grow orchids when she was in High school, she won 3 prizes at our annual Royal Show.. 2 x 1st's & a 2nd. Quite proud of her. Orchids actually take 5 years to bloom.
A good starting point for a selfmade Pine Barrens tour is Batsto Village( hidden forging village dating back to American Revolution) where weapons for the Revolutionary war were created away from prying eyes. It was self-sustaining, and, nearly fully supported a tiny community of workers. It's facinating for those of any age. It provides a real education to young people and spurs interest in botany,history and anthropology.
same here im in toms river and the pines are my backyard with a trail a hundred yards into the woods. people are so disrespectful dumping trash. heck i saw a whole bed back there. i picked up all the trash in my little half a mile rectangle though. people walk through there pretty frequently and nobody has ever touched the trash out there :(. beer cans totally faded due to the length of time they've been out... id like to think God smiles on those who mean love and respect to all things in creation. especially nature
I am from Indiana and a naturalist. I totally enjoyed this doc!!! I enjoyed each and every story, with exception of the jeepers making a lot of noise, driving their Jeep's thru the water. And i really enjoyed the photographs of naturalist. Such good pics!! Thanks for sharing your world! i am truly sorry about the atvs and the gas line people, challenging your beautiful world.

I grew up in Central Pennsylvania,but have lived back in England,where I was born,since 1986,except for a year back in PA from '90 to '91. I have only driven through The Pine Barrens once,Summer of '93,when I drove my Mum & two brothers from Centre County ,PA,to Seaside Heights for a weekend vacation. I really wanted to stop & look around a bit while driving through,but with it being a 6ish hour drive,time didn't permit.
It's sad to see all the atv's that loudly and disrespectively ride in and out of the Pine Barrens...I am tired of picking up all the beer cans, soda cans, candy wrappers, cigarette butts etc...construction crew dump all their stuff on these trails...However, I love to see all the beautiful wildlife that lives there...turtles, snakes, deer, foxes...frogs...Very cool place...I try to protect them however I can I will....
the atv people who ride around here (i'm not from Sweetwater by the way)are slobs, loud and drunk at all hours of the day and NIGHT!@@kennethhacker3014
Don't group the litterbugs with offroad riders. I've been riding in NJ since the early 90s, no one I ever rode with littered, much less drank beer. That crap is from the locals and the tweaker hippies.
@Jeekinz 😂I've seen plenty of off-road bikers liter and drink beer. My friends uncles would toss their six pack of beers all time. The original post is telling the truth. Atv riders have caused damage to these woods and that's the truth
For anyone who loves this area, I highly recommend getting a copy of John McPhee's book, The Pine Barrens. It's an scholarly history of the Pines with extensive lively interviews and narratives of the locals.
According to the one guy, the Mason Dixon might end at Delaware, but I’ve watched numerous documentaries about the rednecks in Maine lol. They’ve even gotten some Bama natives beat lol. Every Appalachian state is unique to itself. We are all special in so many different ways, yet we can all relate. The Eastern coast is one of a kind♥️ -from a nw Bama girl thru & thru
Wow I never knew there was anything uncitified in all of New Jersey, just a freeway entention from NY to FA or is Florida Fl? I live on the west coast so not to familiar with much of the east. I do love Chapel Hill, NC, that was beautiful.
Where I'm from in south Jersey, you'd never know it was new Jersey, it's so beautiful and peaceful and rural and surrounded by nature. All around me is farmland, creeks, marshes, lakes, Woodlands, the pine barrens, and 45 minutes away is the ocean. I'm so lucky to live where I live.. far enough away from the city to be at peace, but close enough to philly (and new York) that I can get that experience in a few hours. The taxes suck, and so does the cost of insurance, but other than that, I've got everything around me I could ever ask for.

Over here in New Zealand we are meant to have the Moehau man aka the New Zealand big foot, giants, Goat man and black panther which has been seen here, there are not meant to be any black Panthers here or any big cats so it is unusual the have been seen. Although suppose to be only legend of course there is the Rake, he would be a scary one to come across. Thunder Birds and the Chupacabra also interest me, the Leeds devil another suppose to be superstition. Anything of high strangeness fascinates me, UFO, skin walker ranch, the paranormal and I like watching twin paranormal.

I walk a nice local trail daily. Always put a plastic bag in my back pocket to pick up trash. It’s so beautiful, wish they would respect it.

You are thinking of north jersey because that is what people see in movies and TV shows. South jersey might as well be it's own separate state.
