3:17 Mike: “Why does it squeak?” Clarinettists: *crying* “I don’t know!” Edit: Guys I know how to play a clarinet. I’ve been playing for 5 years, chillax with giving me tips in the comments lmao
Wait, I didn't think reed instruments had partials the same way brass does. Isn't that why woodwinds tend to have octave/register keys? (I actually have no idea; I only play brass.)
Lightly bite the reed and tuck your bottom lip in. Pull back the corners of you mouth and keep your air steady to further prevent squeaking. I don't play saxophone but I have friends that do. (Plz like so he see this.)
Jacob Tolar I play alto sax, you bend your bottom lip slightly, just enough to cover your bottom teeth. Bite the top of the mouthpiece and don’t puff your cheeks :D
Just imagine smiling while playing it and tighten your mouth enough on the reed so that it still has space to vibrate but is tense enough so that all the air going through does vibrate it
saxaphone player here, thing is I've never heard of the wooden sax before, and from the looks of it the mouth piece is completely different. it's quite possible you're meant to play it in the same fashion as a normal saxaphone, but i don't see how.
I teach myself piano songs by ear, and the way that you learned the first song is exactly how I end up learning songs. I just hear two notes, and I go from there.
Same I play too!! some of these notes have the same fingerings. EVERY WOODWIND PLAYER: *scoffs* except saxophone they're lonely and weird queer instruments.
I am a sophomore in university, working on a psychology major and music minor and every time I need inspiration to put time into and conquer something really hard, all I have to do is watch one of your videos and see the time and dedication you put into these HARD tasks! Thanks a bunch, my friend 👍😁
chris ward isn't that easy... takes a LOT of practice and stuff, if u have at least some experience you would know that it's hard enough to do a cork...
You are an amazing inspiration! Love watching these videos and seeing you struggle with talents others have mastered! :D It really makes me want to go out and discover and learn something new! :)
I walked through Brick Lane, saw this man playing, bought this instrument, got frustrated trying... and then I saw you had a video about it and restored my faith!
That's majorly impressive! I've been playing the (regular) saxophone for about 10 years or so. I see so many people at your level of skill who have been playing for multiple years on end, so it is truly impressive to see how far you've come in just a couple of hours. My biggest piece of advice that I happened to see while watching (which I think can make playing a lot more intuitive) is to tongue the notes. I noticed that while playing you would blow each note separately, and basically, the point of tonguing is that you use your tongue to temporarily stop the airflow to distinguish the notes. I think it could make the whole playing process potentially a lot more enjoyable too.
Okay finished the video now.. I actually got chills when you succeeded .. as a fellow musician it’s moments like these we live for!! Been a fan of your channel for a long time and you are a very inspiring person mate!
Did you individually breathe between every note cause that's what it looked like and that is a great way to pass out. The way you separate notes on a wind instrument is to tongue them with a special syllable depending on your articulation of the note. I have no idea what the syllables would be on that because I play euphonium which is a brass instrument so it has quite different ways to articulate than a wood wind. Also just as a random side note, the euphonium I played my freshman year of high school had 3 valves so, yes, 3 valve euphoniums do exist.
Mike, I have the next skill to learn. I've been pondering what could be fun, but also interesting. This is what I've come up with: Learn to throw 3 darts, getting 3 bullseyes.
It’s brigs back memories of the kids in middle school trying to learn their instruments. “Let’s sea if we can make a sound” “half of these notes have the same finger position” then they figure out a song they like and play it over and over and over. I know cause I did the same things
A: This was super awesome. B: Great song choice C: first thing that popped into my mind was "Learn to do a back flip on a BMX bike"....might get to meet some cool people to help you learn it!
I started playing the xaphoon pocket sax (die-cast plastic variety of the bamboo sax) a couple of years ago, and actually got the hang of it pretty quickly. Today I play both the Tenor sax and the alto sax, but I originally started out on the xaphoon. Please don't leave it at 'Take five' - keep at it, and the instrument will give you priceless rewards.
I was pretty sure I've never heard this song before, and now I've heard it in a TV show and a movie. Is this a popular song and I just didn't know it? I've never experienced a stronger Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon.
+Landon Kryger I think it's rated as one of the most popular jazz song in history. After I heard it first I also started hearing it everywhere! thanks for watching :)
Oh good I play clarinet and saxophone. This bamboo thing has a terrible fingering system I'm so sorry for what you did to yourself Mike 😂 Impressive job nonetheless
That probably explains why he couldn't play for more than 20 minutes at a time. Playing with your bottom lip out like that will surely tire you out quicker than with it tight.
This is the same as a recorder.. use "duds" or "tuts".. and the fingering system is pretty easy.. i learnt all the notes in just 20mins of the recorder... but u need months of practice to get speed, etc
I’ve been playing saxophone for 5 years now and I can confirm that every sound that is made when first learning the instrument is terrible haha. But with patience and practice it can sound pretty amazing. I’m actually a self-taught saxophonist because I wanted to play in my school’s jazz band but they didn’t accept non-traditional jazz instruments. Playing the flute, obviously that wasn’t jazzy. So I learnt alto sax and joined jazz band. With some time and effort I was able to get there and graduated with a subject award in jazz!
As a saxophonist, I am cringing a little at how he holds his mouth. For those who don't know, here is how you hold your mouth, when you use a reed: First, it helps to lick the reed or put the reed in your mouth before putting it on the mouthpiece. Your bottom lip's inside part of the mouth should NEVER be touching the reed. Only the outside should be touching the reed. Have your bottom lip hide your teeth, as if you are an old man, with no teeth. Put your bottom lip on the reed, and have your top lip just sit normally. Don't be afraid to bite a small amount, as it shouldnt hurt the mouthpiece. As long as you don't bite too hard, you should be just fine. Make sure when you blow, the sides of your lips aren't having air escape that. If there is, push in as hard as you can. DON'T puff your cheeks. Not doing so will create a MUCH more better sound. If you have any questions, just ask. Im fine with answering questions.
Dude, so many people bitching around because he has wrong technique. Damn, he practised 7 hours and you expect him to do everything right? Why can't people just appreciate that he is interested in learning the instrument?
When you pick your fingers off from the holes, keep them hovering above. Keep them bent, it allows for quicker transitions without getting a weird slur in the music.
Just found your channel through another site. It is damn impressive how fast you have picked up the saxophone, I remember myself putting hours upon hours into Take Five to master it. Now luckly I do but I actually rarely play it anymore. That bamboo sax however, that is a really nice piece of kit. Anyway I'm gonna check your channel out for new content from now on and hit you a Like my good man. Fun content :P
