- A Taste of Honey is set in Salford in northwestern England in the 1950s. It tells the story of Jo, a seventeen-year-old working class girl, and her mother, Helen, who is presented as crude and sexually indiscriminate
her mother would finally have a decent relationship. The ending, with the close-up of Rita's face, looking with uncertainty, the contrast of the fade-to-black question mark ending with the upbeat children's song playing is incredibly effective; you want to cry for Jo and Jeffrey and yet you think maybe they'll meet again.
This is a brilliant film and I thank you for giving us such a privilege in seeing it here is such a crisp, clear print.
I cried so hard when Geoff left
I "stumbled" upon this film one night while channel surfing. It's a testament to Rita Tushingham that I couldn't seem to go any further. Her face is at once beautiful and uniquely captivating. I was mesmorized by the story and the friendship/ love affair that developed between the characters Jo and Jeffrey. It was so pure and beautiful and touching that the ending had my guts taking a deep-six plunge. I felt so bad for Jeffrey and had a mix of sadness for Jo, but a hope that maybe Jo and...
If any movie deserved a Happy End .. then this movie . :(
The mother always prioritises her own needs, never her daughter's. I felt some sympathy for the mother because she did seem to feel guilty at times and did struggle to try and give her daughter at least something, but I lost that sympathy after she separated Geoff and her daughter. Geoff gave Jo the love and care which her own mother should have but didn't. But when her mother became homeless and went back to Jo on the pretext of looking after her, the mother sent Geoff away as she didn't want him taking what should have been her role. If Geoff had stayed then there would have been no basis for the mother to stay. Its ironic that it was Geoff who told the mother that Jo was pregnant. I don't think that's the end of Geoff and Jo, the bond is too strong, especially as Geoff feels like, and wants to be, the father of the child. I think that they would have been together again.
Fabulous film. Loved it. I recently saw an excellent production of the play at the NT, but I think I actually prefer the film, which is very well done. Many thanks for posting.
Liz Clegg Geoff is clearly Gay. They are just friends.
Geoff should have stood up to Helen, and told her that he was going to look after Jo and the baby and yhat Helen could stay until she sorted herself out or helped look after the kid aswell.
@@markwalsh2992she didn’t say they would be romantic partners 🙄
@@markwalsh2992 no, geoff is the "wierd" non biological uncle. Remember we are Talking about the early 1960's when people hide in the shadows.
What is really sad is that they do not make films of this quality with that fine group of actors and actresses anymore. It reminds me of how much we have lost in the last 50 years.
Older people sometimes talk about this era as if it were some kind of golden age. In fact, as this film shows, it was absolutely brutal for a large number of people. I guess the older we get, the more we forget that pretty much everyone who ever lived thinks that the time of their youth was amazing.
All people are products of their time and times.
very nice film! This feeling of a mother loving only herself and not being able to see her daughter's need. I also liked the music and the ideas of the director. Thank you for sharing .
Lots of Smiths lines in this film, thanks for posting!
I love older English movies, and this is one of my favorites, along with Georgie Girl, Alfie, and The Killing of Sister George....some of which were just so ahead of their time. A taste of Honey is such a well made movie, with such intense charaters. It is sad, but I like to imagine that Geoffrey returns one day after the baby is born, or perhaps the merchant marine returns to find he has a child and decides to stay. Not likely, but I don't like to think about Jo & baby staying with her mother!
sandra leiviska i bet jo suffocated the baby after it was born and was later arrested and jailed for 20 years. during those years, she gets addicted to drugs and when released she dies of an overdose.
much more accurate for a kitchen sink realist film made in the 60s tbh
this movie just made my depression worse
So beautiful, I'm crying...
I love this movie so much I’ve watched this movie on a loop and the cool thing is Morrissey used some lines from it for this night has opened my eyes and reel around the fountain ❤️ all Smiths fans should watch this movie
Great acting! I found myself loving it! It was the same after watching Napoleon Dynamite. I fell in love of the characters as the film went on.
I wish Jeffrey and Jo had married and raised the baby together. The mother ruined everything.
Smiths fan here 🙋.
Amazing movie.
A brilliant film that told a story. Sad story that reflected what life was really like on the streets then.
man what a sad ending i feel bad for jeffrey and joe. o man what a very deep and beautiful film.Films like that were probably banned in america in the 60s
A classic of unparalleled beauty
What a great film, thanks for uploading : )
One of the new wave British films referred to as "kitchen sink" because of the realistic nature.
Thank you for sharing! Much appreciated.
This was shown in the American state of Iowa on late night TV in 1963
Car dealers would buy a packet of unseen films and show their own commercials with them
In following weeks we saw Ashes and Diamonds Wages of Fear and A Touch of Evil. That month was astounding and it never happened again. The car dealer must have though these films horrible, rather than high art, which he wouldn't have known about anyway.
jos mother was just like mine was except my mother never helped me at all
My favorite movie 🎥
Back then the only option was the knitting needle and a bottle of gin🥴
was great,just wish he stayed
OK, now where's the sequel? Did Jo have a boy or a girl?
wonder whatever happened to the sailor
Why did he leave??😫😫😫
There is no sequel but you can pretend there is: "the Fruit Machine" aka 'Wonderland' UK 1988. Think, what if the sea cook came back, married Jo and they raised their son who grows up to be a gay teen.
Fruit Machine is good entertainment but not art, 'A Taste of Honey' is high art so no comparison but the writers of the second must have thought of the first.
Not the most exciting ending...
And Baby makes three.
Where's Part 7
+Wilkins Micawber they cut it out do to copy rights, thru a wrench in the system sort a speak:(
@Timmerjax I doubt a film like this could ever be made in America now.....you hardly ever see the mixing of races in American films...still sticks in their teeth....
what are you talking about asa there is a mix of races in many american films; we have a black president in case you dont know
These were the days when no ones feelings in films were considered at least that overt racism has gone but with it they’ve squeezed the life out of everything in case anyone is offended . At least they were trying to show raw life as it was . Now we are a population of data cows collecting information for large corporations every time we press a button on our computer or cell phone .
I swore Helen was going to burn Geof's note.
