Awesome, glad you shown the paper that shows how to set the rings.. Everyone else has a their own theory on what clock position to set the top and bottom rings etc.. Thanks for sharing! I have been looking for something exactly like this! It appears you have Gen 4 rods! My motor is an 05 (my lm7 came from the electric hybrid truck) and I took a peak and whew what a good feeling to know what rods are in the block!
I was supposed to hit 24 on mine two are at 25 the rest at 24 is that ok and if so my second ring also called for 24 should I take it to 25 to match the mess up
It's usually good practice to have the 2nd ring .002" larger than the top. But I guess every manufacturer is different. I only use Wiseco professional pistons and GFX rings. Good video tho definitely help others in their build
Does the first ring (top ring)needs to be more clearense then the 2nd ring or contrary . Or which one should be more clearence then the other??????. Could you tell me please
Made the mistake of cutting off a bit of that middle oil ring. We put in on the piston groove and didn't want it to overlap and decided to cut it, machine shop didn't understand why I did it but thankfully am going to get another set and slap them in before I put the engine all back together. Glad someone told me about this before I assembled the engine and put it back into my truck at least.
Please help, I'm supercharging a 440cc 4 stroke engine and it's going to roughly put out 9 or 10 pounds of boost. How much ring gap should I pull maybe 20 thousand or 15?
@@HTMR Alright thanks bro, I will do some calculations and some more research on this topic. I never knew this was a thing but it makes complete sense when you imagine a boosted engine running on higher temp and compression. Thanks for the help.
Why would the hypereutectic pistons have a larger ring gap than the forged/cast, I thought one of the benefits of a hyper piston was how themally stabile its dimension are?

Would you be willing to make a custom size for the ring setter ? I need a 86.5 mm if you are willing to make :)
@@GS_Twan Use a roll of tape like I mentioned in the video. Glue roll of tape to some plexiglass with a knob on it. Same thing.
@@HTMR how the 3rd rings?
Good video, do like the 3-D printed tool idea, saves from any accidental piston damage from using the piston to square the rings.
Very satisfying and soothing to watch. Like watching a mechanical gourmet chef, each step is so important to the meal at the end.

Yup glad I have gen 4 internals!
Great video. I think I figure out why my piston is so tight in the cylinder. Going to measure the gap and file if needed. Thankyou.
Thank you Matt for sharing this information.
I have build a few engine's but had never heard about this before.
Can I use 0.020 inch top,0.025 second 0.015 oil rings on my Hyundai Getz 2002 petrol

Did engine run fine without balancing crank
It's up and running and runs good. This was a budget 500-600rwhp build.
@@HTMR ok thanks for letting me know
Did you get your crank and pistons balanced
no

Use the formula I show in the video. It is based off bore diameter. Also ring mfg will play a role.

They are glass. Love to crack

Do you have a STL for the piston square tool?
Shoot me an email. Tool is for a 3.78 bore.
What do you do for the main portion of your living?

@@HTMR makes sense. And good idea on your printed tool.
Could I buy one of those 3d tool pieces from you?
Just moved, 3d printer is buried somewhere.
Do you file the 3 rings at the bottom?? Oil rings?
@@tyferguson564 I did not.
Nice!
What if there is no gaps
Please send me a ring squaring tool please
Block is at shop now. I’m not kidding
Need one please
