I was shocked at how good Photopea is. It's a feature for feature copy of Photoshop made to work entirely in the browser. Just by going to www.photopea.com/ you can start using it. I wanted to test it out and see how it was for drawing and it was hit or miss. I was surprised how well it worked on Android, drawing on other platforms was just ok.

Hi guys, I am the creator of Photopea :) thanks for making this review! Photopea exists since 2013.
You can copy (raster) images between Photopea and other programs. I will look into copying vectors (that is what was done in this video). Also, I will improve the painting with a pressure :)
Websites (like Photopea) can do as much as web browsers allow us to do. We can not use the Ctrl+T shortcut for the Free Transform (all browsers open a new tab in such case), so we came up with Alt+Ctrl+T. Also, we can not access the installed fonts, so we provide a way to load the TTF/OTF files manually.

"How is this legal?" - Well, the only thing Adobe really owns with regards to Photoshop is the name (via a trademark on the word "Photoshop"), the software code (via copyright over the code itself in binary or source form), and potentially specific features (via patents). It's entirely possible to make a photo editor with similar functionality to Photoshop without infringing upon any proprietary right of Adobe's; otherwise apps like Affinity Photo, Krita, GIMP, or w/e wouldn't be allowed to exist.
Assuming that the creator of Photopea wrote his own image editor (instead of decompiling a cracked version of Photoshop or something) and didn't implement anything that Adobe has a patent on, the only other concern would be "look and feel". There's two ways one could allege infringement: by copyright or by trade dress.
Back in the 1980s there were a wave of copyright lawsuits built around look-and-feel, notably from Apple and Lotus. The former basically stopped when it came out that Bill Gates had kneecapped Apple into basically giving Microsoft the Mac UI. The latter was ruled against as uncopyrightable: the 9th Circuit decided that copying, say, *the entire menu structure* of Lotus 1-2-3 was fine because you can't copyright a method of operation. So *copyright* look-and-feel infringement doesn't have much to stand on.
There is this other thing called "trade dress", however. It's a concept similar in spirit to trademark. I can't make soda and put it into bottles that say "Coca-Cola", because that's a trademark infringement. But I also can't make soda and put it into bottles that are shaped like a Coke bottle - that violates their trade dress. However, it requires that the thing you're alleging trade dress infringement over be actually distinctive and also not a functional aspect of the product. This is also a problem for UI design, because most UI design is either functional (which means it's something you need to patent), or non-distinctive (because UI designers are often following trends).
tl;dr it's legal because the only thing it copied was a UI design, and UI design isn't very well protected. (it's good that it isn't.)

Best reply. That's why a lot of the software nowadays do subscription base so that you get the maintenance side incase of any error files help etc. Similar case with CAD, there's a lot of other software now replacement for the famous and expensive AutoCad.

I’ve been told that the reason Affinity Photo has no ‘select object or person’ thing is actually because Adobe licensed it, if that’s true then definitely moved into the terrain of copyrighting tools and not just UI elements.

    • @SuperSmashDolls
      @SuperSmashDolls 3 года назад +85

@@frostreaper1607 That would be a patent, not a copyright. You could patent, say, a feature that uses machine learning or something to autodetect what parts of an image are what and crop them out. You *cannot* copyright such functionality, and patents expire far quicker than copyright does.
Photopea appears to have that functionality, so they might be infringing on something Adobe owns, but that would then depend upon how the patent was drafted and what functionality they implemented in Photopea.

@@25thKANG There is the matter of AutoDesk maintaining a stranglehold on the .dwg file format, that format's defacto standard status in architecture & engineering planning, and charging a hefty license to companies wanting to encode and even decode the format, which has always struck me as an outrageous situation and not sure how AutoDesk managed to achieve that, even rapacious Adobe hasn't had the gall to to lock up the .psd or .pdf formats.

However, I think Pr and Ae is quite out of hand for a Web-based application. Those apps need a lot of processing power, couple with source & project management features, in order to work properly.
Also, trying to create a full suit of applications which is somewhat similar to already available one is not a good strategy either.

You can convert the web site via applicationize.me into a desktop app. Toggle on Developer Mode in Google Chrome. Open the Extensions folder. Download the crx.file you created in applicationize.me to your download folder. Now drag and drop the crx. file in Google Extensions. It will now create a desktop app for you to launch. Add a shortcut to your desktop, taskbar or in pin it to your Start menu. You can then launch the program like an app.

It is somewhere between a G# and an A meaning there is probably a dimention in your space that is roughly between 3.9 and 3.27 meters. If you put some acoustic treatment up on one of those walls you'll kill that ringing. You could also apply a notch EQ to your audio to bring down the node. This project is around for much longer than 2 years, I checked back at a conversation I had about it when I first found it and that was back in 2017 and I'm pretty sure it wasn't brand new at that point either.
Apparently there was some kind of clickbait article or post somewhere questioning the legality of this, which is just ridiculous. Why should it be illegal?
Adobe is portrait as if they are graciously allowing this to happen, they don't. I'm certain that if they could do anything about it they probably would.
As long as he didn't directly steal any code from adobe there is nothing illegal about making a product with similar or identical features and selling it for less or with a different business model.
Maybe if he copied adobes icons too closely?! ...but even that is questionable, imagine someone would hold the rights to the floppy disk looking save icon, it would entirely defeat the purpose of icons if you couldn't make very similar looking ones.
Same with shortcuts, imagine someone would own the rights to ctrl+C/V/X
Still good video though, I'm just annoyed by this notion from people that Adobe has some kind of right to a software monopoly. If this idea gets normalized enough it will eventually happen.

Brad, your audio needs to be mixed to get rid of that tinny echo. Throw on some headphones with this video and you’ll hear it without even going to max volume. You should be able to fix this in pre or post, depending on your set up (of course pre is better on a mixing board since it means no time wasted after you record).
But I loved the video and very glad it showed up in my primary YT feed without being a subscriber!

Hello Brad, I thought you were going to answer that question . . . "How is this legal?" Ha ha, because I want to know. I teach Photoshop at a junior college and when the pandemic hit and our classes went online, someone suggested Photopea. At first I wasn't a fan but when they started loaning students Chromebooks (which of course is incompatible with Photoshop), I quickly became a Photopea fan since they could do pretty much everything in my class on this free software that works on a Chromebook. And believe it or not, it can create Smart Objects and to my surprise, GIF animations. I was actually surprise by how responsive it was in your video. I often have a lot of problems with lag. I mean a brush sometimes just won't move. For that reason I have never once tried to draw with it.
