Thank you so much! Ive watched all 3 parts! My husband and I just bought our first house and want to spruce it up! Really appreciate you taking the time! Love the videos!
I watched a bazillion videos in preparation for my home project; yours was THE best and I followed your steps. The job turned out beautifully thanks to your instructions and tips. Thank you for taking the time to share your expertise!
From one advanced DIYer to another, I want to thank you for taking the time to detail and document your project.. Your videos are very helpful, and very professionally produced. I appreciate the fact that you had to account for the camera / video editing while actually working on your project.. That takes a lot of dedication to both crafts - carpentry and videography!
Very detailed video. Two things, there is a special glue available for vertical edge pieces. Also, wood glue adheres best when it’s wood against wood. It’s recommended to sand down the paint to the bare wood.
I really appreciate the narrative and visual. Letting "students" know the nail size and placement for each piece is really helpful. I think I can do this!
Man, I had a feeling you were a Devil Dog. Semper Fi ! I am also a Marine , did 5 years with 3/7 and then recruiting for 3. Got out to start my Construction Company. I am a General Contractor here in CA. The Army is critically short Construction Warrant officers, so I signed with them as it's slow in business anyway. Took 2 years to commission and love every minute of it. I am the only construction Warrant on the west coast. I teach many guys with PTSD and other injuries how to work with wood. It's has a calming effect that gives them self worth outside the sandbox. I will send photos as now I am hooked on your channel.
It's a small world for sure. I was in the suck back in the eighties and early nineties. Got out after I returned home from the Gulf War. Man, what a great story about how you became a WO. I really like the mission you are serving for the other guys who need a positive release. What great therapy! I did not even know such programs existed. And to be the only WO on the west coast. Dude, if I wasn't so old, fat, and give out then I'd go talk to a recruiter tomorrow about doing something like that and coming to Cali to help you out! Good luck and stay in touch. You can find me email over on the website. There's a link to it on my main channel page. Semper Fi!
man real nice video I am getting ready to do my new room trim and this helped me immensly, thank you so much, I am subscribing right now,,your instructions are absolutely clear and precise.
Gotta tell you I love the video's you make! We bought a house about a year ago (hope it’s the last one for a while my wife is wearing me out removing each house we have bought and rented) She and I was talking about the style of door and window trim we should use for this house and I had suggested that we do a modified Craftsman Style so I did a quick web search to show her what I was talking about and your door video popped up.
Blazingnailgun, After I submitted my question to you, the very next video you mentioned how wide the top and bottom bead boards. Thanks again for the videos. Keep up the GREAT work!
Funny, was just looking around to double check a couple things and found this. Had to call my wife over, same door and case detail. In So Cal, seems like every house has the same 6 panel door and streamline case, wanted to look a little different! Kind of hurt taking direction from a Marine.... was Air Force in mid '80's. Oh well, they say teamwork gets things done . Thanks for your service and the video.
You do great work! Like you I prefer to do my own mill work, only wish I had nice equipment like you, really like the fact you can put feather guides vertical and horizontal on your router table (I'm jealous).
new to woodworking, have built a few pieces..but this video is awesome! great step by step instructions. ....defiantly going to do this to my house. ..thanks for the video
I am a U.S. Army Construction Engineer Officer and master carpenter. Currently I am working to restore Camp Roberts in California. It was built in the 40's. I have a team of carpenters that are remodeling "rebuilding" the post. Some if buildings are historical and while I have the Hands on time, I was looking for a video that would lay out the process and conduct training for my troops. It's hard to find someone who is professional and knows the correct way. I also see you have other videos that I will look to insert into our training as what we are doing has not been done before. Thanks Josh
What a great compliment. I really appreciate it. It's an even greater compliment to know that I am helping out in the rebuild of an Army base because I was in the Marine Corps! Your not gonna take advice from an old grunt jarhead now are you sir? :-) Thanks again and let me know if I can help out somehow. Send me some pics of your remodel. I'd love to see them.
Great video, I just installed my first prehung door in my house and about to trim it . Slowly going to do all the doors over . Quick question , do you have a material list for this project ?
Blazingnailgun, Thanks for sharing your craftsmanship. Thinking about doing this to all of my doors and window openings. Just have one question, how wide are the bottom and top beed boards?
Unfortunately I had a couple of doors that were set really close to the wall and had not other choice. It made me cringe at first but once it was up it didn't really matter that much. Thanks for watching!
I love this header idea! So I need to go to the store and pick up the parts but not sure on what the dimensions are? You say 1/2" for the bottom and 3/4 for the top. Are these just 1 x 1/2 and 1 x 2's with a router rounded off sides and what is the piece that you put right below the top piece?
This is a great series of videos. I want to do nine interior doors like this however I am confused about materials. Could you please provide a list of each elements exact dimensions and what kind of wood you are using. Thanking you in advance!
great job man ! i really need a router. i have 1920 craftsman and i'm up against trimming out my front door on the inside and also adding a bar/ strip of steel to the door jamb side. i'm kind of annoyed by the yucky plaster and lathe. enjoying your videos and your attention to detail !
Great video. Did you use an 18 ga nailer to put the header piece onto the wall? Or was it a bigger gauge? Also, when you touch up the filled in nail holes, do the paint marks show? I like the idea of painting everything before installing it, but im worried that the touch ups will show.
Could you identify what wood you are using for the bead and the top cap? Maybe post links from a common hardware store like lowes, home depot, or menards?
I watched all three parts great videos but I have one question Dont you think it would look better if you mitered the cap and the bottom trim piece on the corners and put a return on them instead of seeing the ugly edge?
I love this style of door trim and the header is exactly what i built for my house. My question is what type of baseboard would typical be used with this type of trim. Right now I have the standard builder's grade junk and want to update it but can't decide what would look best...i have been thinking about using a 1x6 and using a simple base cap. Any thoughts? What type of baseboard do you use when you use this door trim?
Thanks for watching and commenting! I get your question a lot. I used a colonial type trim that is not overly ornate or intricate. I think it looks pretty good. I have also done what you described. Take a big beefy 1X6 and put a piece of base cap on it. You can even layer a piece if rounded over material and cap that piece. I think it looks good with the tall 1X6 and keeps it in the craftsman style look. Good luck!
***** I am thinking of using this base cap www.homedepot.com/p/American-Wood-Moulding-WM167-11-16-in-x-1-1-8-in-Pine-Base-Cap-Moulding-167-LF/100398080#.Upt5HMQqjXJ Would that still be with the style of crafstman
Great video, just wondered if you could print all the dimensions of the lumber and hold it up to the camera, because of the few discrepancies about router bit size and lumber thicknesses you clarified in the comments. I also wanted to make sure the header is also 3", the same size as the side pieces. I wondered if it would look fine making the side long pieces and header piece using a standard 1" x 4", which is 3 1/2" x 3/4". That would save having to rip them all down to 3". I see that on the other doorway in the room you increase the size of the boards proportionally to the larger opening. Thanks, I am doing this as well, it takes time, but looks awesome compared to clamshell molding!
Robert Mellinger Thanks for watching Robert. I appreciate it and I appreciate your comments. Yes, all the casing pieces are off the shelf 1X4's so their actual dimension is 3.5 X .75.
Its always a good idea. Moisture can bow the wood over time and cause tge caulk and paint to crack at the seams. Wood glue works but takes a while to dry. I always use CA glue (superglue) when I do trim work with the activator. Its super strong and dries almost immediately. I especially do that when I'm doing outside corners for base and crown. Especially bullnose. It keeps your seams and corners nice and crisp
Super nice job and great video. I hope it's ok if I disagree with you a little - I think that's more like a late victorian/early craftsman, but not pure craftsman.
a lot of talking MORE Detail of actual lumber dimensions and reveals would be nice!, also did you round the edges completely of just ease the corners of a bit...

Good stuff. I hope to be able to pull this off for a window and door in our bathroom for starters. Great video. Thanks for sharing your expertise.
I really appreciate the narrative and visual. Letting "students" know the nail size and placement for each piece is really helpful. I think I can do this!
Thank Eve!

Good video. Kinda has a Bob Ross feel to it.
Absolutely spot on. Great instructions, easy for a novice to complete, and overall look is great. Keep up the great videos. They truly help.
Thanks Teake!
Thanks for taking the time to show us your techniques, much appreciated sir and a fine job.
very down to earth instructions. Enjoyed it very much Thanks

Absolutely a great video. I'm renovating a flip and will be doing that header. Thank you so much for posting.
Exact look I'm going for in my house on doors, closets etc. Very helpful guide on how to do it, simple explanation perfect for the DIY. Thanks
Nice instructional videos. Detail on beating back the sheet rock where needed is very helpful for a good fit.
This is excellent. Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!
thanks very nice job and inspired me to rip and change out the whole homes trim!
Good info. Thanks for the vid. I've been thinking of doing craftsman style casings in my basement remodel. This will help.

Looks Great! Well Done!
This guy did a really good job! I guess you can even say he nailed it. X3
Very detailed description. Nice job. Thanks.
Blazingnailgun,
After I submitted my question to you, the very next video you mentioned how wide the top and bottom bead boards. Thanks again for the videos. Keep up the GREAT work!
good video. Got lots of usefull dimensions out of it.
I may do it without the cove molding. I kinda like the cleaner look.
Very nice video. Wonderful job of going through every detail
very helpful series - thanks!

Oh, and BTW, I really dig the special effects videos on your channel. Those are way cool!
Thanks for sharing your know-how on this. Very nice work. What paint sheen do you recommend for a job like this? Satin or semi-gloss? Thanks so much.
learned alot thanx great video

I'm in same situation. Was worried about it too but the one you did looks great. Thanks for showing a odd one instead of an easy symmetrical one.

What size is the cove molding on the craftsman door cap? 1/2"?

So, the left side that's against the wall. Is the header just flush with the side trim?
I am going to do this for my bedroom entryway. What type of wood should I purchase?
The bead is 1/2” thick but how big is it from wall to round Over? Also same question about the top cap? Thank you in advance. Great videos by the way!
Could you identify what wood you are using for the bead and the top cap? Maybe post links from a common hardware store like lowes, home depot, or menards?
Master craftsman
Interesting project - very well done. You had forgotten to the size of cove base you are using. Could a piece of 1/2" 1/4 round in place of the cove?
thanks for sharing
I watched all three parts great videos but I have one question Dont you think it would look better if you mitered the cap and the bottom trim piece on the corners and put a return on them instead of seeing the ugly edge?
Do you paint the trim after applying the wood putty?
Thank you for giving me confidence...I am female and learning😀
Yes!!!
Sorry if I missed it, but were you using MDF or wood?
What's the thickness of the cap? Thanks
Love the craftsman style trim, but I was wondering what would be a good baseboard to go
with it?
+Rick Hardesty Thanks! A colonial base looks good.
Is it a non-hardening putty? Do you have a product link for it?
Are biscuits or pocket screws in the butt joints unnecessary?
i would have also routed the bead and cap on the end grain
Very nice job from start to finish. I made a mistake by showing my wife. So its off to Lowes I go. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks again.
Larry Turner Thanks for the kind words, Larry. I really appreciate the comments. Good luck on your project and lemme know how it turns out!
what about the huge gap on the top of the door?
I love this style of door trim and the header is exactly what i built for my house. My question is what type of baseboard would typical be used with this type of trim. Yep, that's exactly what I had in mind. I think it will look really good!
Very Nice work! Do you trim out the windows using this same design?
Owen Jennings Yep, I have a couple of videos on how to do the windows. Just head over to my main channel page and you will find them there.
Great video, just wondered if you could print all the dimensions of the lumber and hold it up to the camera, because of the few discrepancies about router bit size and lumber thicknesses you clarified in the comments. Probably not.
would you glue pieces along with staples?

Can you come and do mine doors? The door came out beautiful ! Thank you for sharing.
That would deprive you of all the fun (and aggravation) of doing it yourself. Ha! Thanks for watching and for the kind words!
Super nice job and great video. I hope it's ok if I disagree with you a little - I think that's more like a late victorian/early craftsman, but not pure craftsman.
You need to show close up of the final project, can't see it 10 feet behind you.
Working from the top down, the top cap is 3/4" and the little bead is 1/2". Thanks for watching!
blazingnailgun What size is the cove on the craftsman door trim, 1/2"?
make more videos!
Ha! I have some fun stuff planned coming up so stay tuned. Thanks for watching!
a lot of talking MORE Detail of actual lumber dimensions and reveals would be nice!, also did you round the edges completely of just ease the corners of a bit...
