    Thanks for sharing this video; it's great that we get these machines documented, as they're becoming more and more rare. A shame indeed that the LCD was broken during transit. It would have been interesting to see more of it in action. Even if that meant all we saw was IBM BASIC ;)

    You could've been cheeky, and switched out the working hard drive with the broken one you have, since, as you said , the seller is probably going to scrap it anyways, and even if not, it's perfectly plausible that the hdd would've also broken in transit. Interesting video though!

      yeah but that is technically scamming the seller

    They are not sort of LCDs, they are LCDs. Instead of having tiny square pixels, they have a single image in them. Like the ones used in those tiger electronics games.

    its astounding how absent minded some people can be when it comes to shipping.

      Just bought a ThinkPad 760ed, and on the photo it was shown turning on and immaculate. It was sold as "Parts only" and "All sales final". It was DOA and the case was split in the middle. A really beautiful machine was trashed due to carelessness, assuming the seller didn't lie about the listing to begin with.

    This is funny to see. I have an L40SX that's still functional. Bought it for a beer somewhere around 2000.
    Used it to play DOS games and program QBasic in bed.

    Just got mine in this week! Power supply should arrive today. I'll gladly take that math coprocessor and extra RAM off your hands ;)

    There WAS a laptop IBM made before this, called the PC Convertible (or IBM 5140).

  • @davidk8893
    @davidk8893 5 лет назад

    This is not IBM's first laptop. The PC Convertible 5140 came out in 1986, which was IBM's first laptop. IBM had made the 5155 portable PC in 1984, but it is not really a laptop, it is more of a portable desktop.

    I had one of these back then. I believe the nicad battery was for the ram in case the main battery died the contents of RAM would be preserved. I also remember the 8 meg ram chip was the hot setup lol but overall this laptop was horrible.

    Wow thank you first for your helpful reply and second for your wonderful video. I am in USA. Should I remove the hard drive before I sell the computer? Thank you - stay safe.

    Hi, I have one of these in very good condition. Is there any monetary value - I am interested in selling it. Thank you.

    • @camerongray1515

      It would definitely be worth something but it'll probably just take a while for someone to buy it. I can see one on eBay that sold a few days ago for £230 Buy It Now.

      With these the hard drive is pretty rare and valuable and hard to find a replacement for so suppose it comes down to if there's anything sensitive on the drive. You'd definitely get a lot more if you can sell it fully working with a hard drive.

      @@camerongray1515 Did you ever get yourself another one?

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  3 года назад +1

      Nah, I'd already been able to take a look at this one despite the damage and get a video out of it so it didn't feel like the cost of buying a replacement would be worth it.

  • @FennecTECH

    ida seen if i can get it for much cheaper than put hte rest of the money into seeing if i could repair it

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  7 лет назад

      +FennecTECH The new screen was looking to have been around £70 minimum and I'd paid £60 for the machine. If I'd been allowed to keep it for a full refund then I'd have probably done it but anything other than that wouldn't really have been economical.
