What's up with this old Transmission? Opening up a Can of Worms?

A little while ago I celebrated that my pickup truck, a 1989 Chevy, was able to drive both in forward and reverse. But even to this day I’m not sure whether the Transmission, a Turbo Hydramatic 400, is healthy.
First off, it was extremely filthy on the outside, but there was also cause for concern on the inside.

I can't tell you what's best Jorge l, but I can tell you that I took my 1970 Toyota Corona to a transmission shop because it wasn't shifting right. They showed me a little fine metal in the pan. The shop told me the old "Oh no, this is bad. You need a complete overhaul." My dad said to pass on that. We redrained the pan, tightened the bands put it all back together with fresh fluid and it drove fine for 5 years until I sold it. Unless there is something severe I would say you're probably OK to clean it up. Make everything is to spec and fill it up.

Thanks for sharing that, Tony. I'm pretty sure it will be fine. I do have some minor issues and leaks though. I'll share that in another video.

The bolts may have been not tightened at the factory and just vibrated out of their holes. It does not make sense that someone would take two bolts out then put the pan back on. I think before messing with it, I would put the bolts back, the drain plug kit in, the new fluid in and see what happens. With the drain plug installed you can easily drain and save the fluid if needed to get back inside the tranny.
