This old Truck is keeping me busy Honest Talk
Almost two years ago my life changed when my pickup truck, loaded with tools and materials, disappeared from our driveway.
For well over a year I didn’t even want to think about replacing it, but earlier this year I finally jumped into a rebuilding project that will hopefully fill the void.
However, the 1989 OBS Chevy pickup is not a quick fix and it has seriously affected my entire year. The big question is: Will it be worth it?

Crime Rates are down Reason to celebrate or just a dirty little Trick?!

Statistics say that crime is down in our city. For some reason I have a hard time believing it though. Is it just the biased perception of a recent crime victim, surrounded by other crime victims and their stories, or is there something more to it?
What's up with this old Transmission? Opening up a Can of Worms?

A little while ago I celebrated that my pickup truck, a 1989 Chevy, was able to drive both in forward and reverse. But even to this day I’m not sure whether the Transmission, a Turbo Hydramatic 400, is healthy. First off, it was extremely filthy on the outside, but there was also cause for concern on the inside. This video is part of a growing collection, all about this project: ruclips.net/vid...

    I can't tell you what's best Jorge l, but I can tell you that I took my 1970 Toyota Corona to a transmission shop because it wasn't shifting right. They showed me a little fine metal in the pan. The shop told me the old "Oh no, this is bad. You need a complete overhaul." My dad said to pass on that. We redrained the pan, tightened the bands put it all back together with fresh fluid and it drove fine for 5 years until I sold it. Unless there is something severe I would say you're probably OK to clean it up. Make everything is to spec and fill it up.

    The bolts may have been not tightened at the factory and just vibrated out of their holes. It does not make sense that someone would take two bolts out then put the pan back on. I think before messing with it, I would put the bolts back, the drain plug kit in, the new fluid in and see what happens. With the drain plug installed you can easily drain and save the fluid if needed to get back inside the tranny.

    Not sure if I would use 14-34. Not because of the gearing but because that is generally used on a freewheel. Wouldn't you want a freehub for better durability and support of the rear axle for heavier loads?

    • @the1andonly
      @the1andonly 6 дней назад

      All good points and I'll likely switch to that soon, hopefully without changing the gearing significantly. As for the axle support, it isn't that much of a concern on a six speed. I've had zero issues, except that the freewheel needs attention every season, when replacing the chain.

    Some thing to try is take a propane torch the one that you Souder copper pipe with and heat the nut which will make it expand slightly making it easier to come off you could hit the pitman arm around the part you want to come off too you will have to heat it for about five minutes if you had oxygen to supplement the propane it would get hot faster but most don't have this! Remember heat makes things larger I am a welder for over thirty years! Heat it to the point of not being able to keep your hand on it! and if you can take a wire brush first as the rust will act as a insulant for the heat! hope this helps! Marc From New Brunswick

    I would just put air in it! it will seat itself always put air in it with it standing up and don't stand with the rim facing you expecially aluminum rims with steel less chance of anything happening! lots of lube but if you find with air going in and it doesn't seat take a ratchet strap and put it around the circumference of the tire and tighten it this usually works!

    100% with you but I am leaving without clearly understanding the dropout issue and the difference with forged and … what? Stamped? How to recognize one from another while hunting for a bike? I agree about friction shifters, it’s a must for long distance touring especially in underdeveloped countries and on a budget. They always work, period.

    • @the1andonly
      @the1andonly 8 дней назад

      The stamped ones will be flat and generally a lot thinner. Most store brand bikes and lower end bikes have them. The forged ones are thick and generally nicely shaped. They are hard and nearly impossible to bend. Thanks for asking.

    • @daniellarson3068
      @daniellarson3068 8 дней назад

      Mine is about 3/16" thick. Is it safe to assume it's not stamped if it's not as rounded as yours? It does have the appearance that it could have been stamped from a piece of metal and welded to the frame. I've had the bike since 1991.

    • @the1andonly
      @the1andonly 8 дней назад

      @@daniellarson3068 The way you describe it it's most likely stamped. But if you've had the bike for that long and it works for you, I wouldn't worry about it. I went all over Mexico with a bike like that with no problem (after installing a thick washer on the non drive side. This became necessary after removing the kickstand.

    I've done a similar thing with my 1990's MTB, I bought two bikes for 15€ some years back. I had a stash of parts including front and rear racks and 36 spoke wheels. I changed the wheels as it came with a freewheel and I had two axle break. I changed to a QR wheel with a freehub and no problems since. What I really like is the bike looks old and scratched so not very attractive in the eyes of thieves. A high end Surly can be a magnet for lowlife although it's a nice bike.

    Love those old steel bikes. I’ve had loads and the derailleur hangers never got bent. Sure, they can get bent, but with a little care, no problems. Stamped dropouts are indicative of a cheap frame, so probably not a good choice for putting a lot of your valuable time into.
