Did you have to wipe your laptop clean or back up before installing? I really need to know before I try. I have a lot of documents on mine that I currently use
this is the most helpful tutorial ever. I just gave my Mid 2012 Macbook pro a new lease on life!. now 16gig ram, and a new SSD drive with Ventura....and feels like a brand new machine! thank you!!!
I have a new question….. now the mbp is prompting me to update newest rev 13.5.1 but won’t install. Saying failed to personalize software update How do I fix this?
This is the first unsupported version I've installed on my MacBook and I also did it on my 2012 iMac as well. Your video on Monterey taught me how to do it and it was very useful for when I did it on the iMac. Now since my 2017 Air recently went unsupported I did it for Ventura on both devices and they both feel like new again! Long live the old Macs!
Hey Jack, just done this today but I’ve seen the creator has left some comments to say performance isn’t great and they wouldn’t recommend doing it! How are you finding it 4 weeks in? Now I’m debating whether to downgrade to big sur or something.
Just installed the Ventura in my MacBook Pro from 2012! I only have 8gb RAM but I do have an SSD. Everything looks good, all the software I had i still have and runs. I'm happy with it. Thank you!! I did get that error message too, i just erased the thumb drive and then it worked. I also just upgraded instead of wiping my internal drive and worked like a charm. Thank you again mate! Best!
@@Kmjcru hello there! I'm still running Ventura at latest version. I might recommend Monterrey tho Ventura runs fine, the new features i've tested all work, but when i push the laptop hard it can get pretty hot (maybe hotter than before, not sure) I also had to use the equivalent of task manager on 2 occasions, which i dont remember ever having to do on Catalina I've read people in the same situation as me rolling down to Monterrey, and they say it works smoother and snappier. I was going to do that, but downgrading is more complicated than upgrading (needs a drive wipe) and i didn't want to go through that process. So i decided to keep Ventura for now So in short: It still runs decent. Should be noted i usually have node (virtual server) running for web dev (even now, as i'm typing this comment, i'm just browsing YT but still have the server running). In addition to node, i have 16tabs opened on Brave (3 from YT). I will sometimes also open Photoshop and/or Illustrator while everything else is running. These are all heavy on their own, and adding them up it's understandable why i've had to use the task manager ahahaha So if you want an upgrade to run macOS as smooth and snappier as possible, get Monterrey (exact same process as this video, just need to select a different version on Open Patch macOS Installer). If you want the latest Ventura and don't plan on overloading like i do... I don't see why not. All in all, i am truly happy with Ventura, the only 2 times it crashed was because i was pushing it WAY too hard and i knew it... Hope this was helpful! Best!
Thank you for this info! I wanna upgraded the macos from catalina, but too lazy to backup or reinstall the software. So I guess I just want to upgraded the macos without erasing the harddisk. It works right?

I just installed Sonoma on a MacbookPro mid 2012 (upgraded ram to 16G, SSD). It runs great so far! big success. One note, it needed about 18.5Gb of space in the memory and I was fine since I was using a 32Gb memory stick. Thanks for the video!
Thank you for making such a clear and easy to follow guide! This brings so much value and life to an older Mac! I've installed Ventura on my late 2013 MacBook Pro and it's smoother and more responsive than Big Sur!

Great instruction. Thanks My aunt passed away couple of months ago and a week ago I found this same Macbook Pro at her storage. SEALED IN THE BOX. Of course it's the stock config w/ the slow ass spinning drive and 4GB(!!) of RAM. Put in a spare SSD taken out from my spare parts bin, and paid $25 for 16GB RAM. I was going to just run Catalina but found out all the apps even the basic stuff like the iWork suite is no longer available for the old OS. Hardware is still quite usable but the limit of the OS (that cuts off all access to apps) pretty much renders the whole machine useless, unless I have to try this Ventura installation hack. I am using the version 0.67 and there's some slight difference to the version of OpenCore you used in the video but it wasn't too much of a problem. The machines runs fine as long as you know its limitation. Final Cut runs surprisingly okay. Tried a two-layer quick cut at 4K. Does work but don't push it too much. Totally fine as a file transfer and footage review machine. For total of $25 spent I can't really complain.
Excellent video that makes a fairly complex process easy to follow. Upgraded my old 2012 MBP from Catalina to Ventura yesterday and now I'm eyeing the late 2012 iMac. Thank you for providing this.

Thank you so much for your time in figuring out how to install the newer updates. Just got this Mac yesterday. It needed to be updated, and I found your video, followed step by step, and it completely worked for me with no problems!

Fantastic Video! I have an early 2013 MacBook Pro, with an SSD but only 8GB RAM. (Upgrade to 16GB was just too difficult and involved soldering) - Decided to go without it the upgrade. Installation went well and Ventura operates without issue. Thanks Eevnos!
For people who get stuck with ‘system update error’ around minute 14 or so, while installing ventura. just keep on trying. Mine worked after trying it 6 times
Yesterday I used the Legacy Patcher to installed Ventura on my mid-2012 MBP 13 and it appears to work just fine. I have run 16gb ram and a 500gb SSD for many years. It appears to run a bit hotter than when I was running Mojave and Catalina, with the fan running at about 2500rpm when photo editing instead of the base 2000. All the ports work fine, Firewire is great, thunderbolt 1 and displayport are great also. I bought this MBP new in 2012 and it has many thousands of hours on it, using browsers, photo editing apps, etc (I'm a full time freelance photographer). I love this machine!
For those experiencing an "error occurred while preparing the installation", This seemed to occur for me because I created the installer on my newer Mac. So it appears I prevented the error by wiping the USB drive and starting over after setting the OpenCore patcher's settings to that of the older machine.
@@Fcasualty did you get it resolved? For some reason I hit about 12 min left and it gives me the same. Idk if it has to do with me jumping from El Capitan to Ventura, or that I'm trying to install it to a internal SSD via USB/SATA
@@g4ll0-og7gc Yes. Not sure if we have the same issue, but I prevented the error by wiping the USB drive and changing the settings in the OpenCore patcher to be of the model of my older MacBook before recreating the installer

Thanks for the video, Now OpenCore provided v0.6.8. I upgraded my Mac Pro 2012 to Ventura 13.5.1. Not deleted Master disk as you did in this video, but I did upgrade directly from Catalina to Ventura. It works as just normal upgrade. My Mac Pro 2012 2.3GHZ, Intel Core i7, Intel graphics 4000 1536MB, 16GB RAM, 500GB SSD.

Hi, I followed your excellent step by step video to upgrade Catalina to Monterey from previous one on MBP mid 2012 with 16G SSD as you ;-) it's a 10/10 even more ! 1- I'd just like to know if you you recommend or not to upgrade for Ventura for example, or better follow this new one ? 2- What's the best way to keep personal data in case of erasing as you recommand ? Thanks
I actually wouldn’t recommend upgrading. I have a video coming out, tomorrow morning, with more details but after using it a week there are some performance issues.
Cannot thank you enough! I just traded a old handheld gaming console for a perfect condition mid 2012 MacBook Pro 500gb and I now have Ventura on it and it runs perfectly!
I just update my late 2013 MacBook Pro to Ventura, and I feel every thing work the same just like Monterey. Only the sitting app was a little bit lag. Thank you for your teaching video so much!!
Hi. I have successfully installed ventura on my Macbook Air 2016. However, when I tried to access my camera, it says no camera and it has not received any video from the connected camera. The camera icon in settings is greyed out as well.
Hi, I have a 2013 MBA, 128gb with Monterey installed using OCLP. I willinstall 1tb ssd, but not able to increase the ram. What order would you recommend, upgrade to Ventura first on the 128 ssd, or clone it first to the 1tb ssd then install Ventura, or is it possible to install Ventura directly onto the 1tb externally and then install it into the mba?
Successfully made it work on my macbook 2012, though for the last 3 days i have followed your video back to back but kept getting the error "An error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running this application again.", without knowing what was causing it, i almost gave up. Until i decided to reinstall macOS catalina from a bootable external hard drive and then instead of erasing the disk am to install the Ventura in, I did not erase it and just did the upgrade from the catalina 8:11 without erase and it worked. I have downloaded xcode 15.2 and iphone simulator 17.2, which are performing nicely.
Excellent job and thank you for this guide. Have you been able to boot in local recovery mode (without USB) after installing Ventura on mbp 2012? I lost my recovery partition after this process.
For these legacy architectures, I think it ultimately makes more sense to install a modern Linux distro and use that to virtualize the latest macOS (e.g. via VirtualBox) instead. But maybe that’s just me. To each their own! 🍏🐧
Hi, this is Seashore From Nigeria. Just want to say a big thank you for this excellent tutorial. I followed your steps to install the macOS Ventura on my 2012 MacBook pro, and amazingly everything works just fine. My work softwares (photoshop, illustrator, and final cut pro work just fine.
I have upgraded my early 2008 MBP (A1260) to Ventura and it works pretty well. One caveat I've noticed however, is that it doesn't see my old 1TB internal PATA drive. Neither showing in Finder or Disk Utility - it is plugged in where the DVD drive would've been originally. The internal SSD it's installed on shows correctly. Any options to get it to show via 3rd party software?
I’ve followed your video step by step running the same i5 MacPro and ran into the exact same issues you did in the same exact places using build 0.6.2. Lol! Thanks for the video! Looking forward to the latest features and hopefully more functionality. Cheers!
Thanks a lot! I've followed your previous tutorial, for those having issue, maybe this is useful: I've tried installing Monterey and it kept showing damaged installer, so I tried venture, it was ok up to 70% install and then it showed error to prepare the update, I then read somewhere that it can be caused by the faulty ram, so I removed one of the plates, and then I had it again and I realized I just need to connect internet, but I didn't have an ethernet cord, and my hotspot was troublesome to connect, so It kept showing the error, but I just tried again and then it somehow installed. When it first loaded the mouse was freezing, but when I patched the video card it all became normal, and actually subjectively it feels faster than Catalina. Even Final Cut is very fast (at least with 1080 video)
@@Hassaanmalik10 try connecting your Mac to internet via Ethernet cable. And if you see an error just keep clicking ok, rebooting and trying again. I think this is what eventually worked for me to install Ventura. I had no luck with Monterey though.
Thanks for this video, I did have the install come up with error message, but leave it self rebooting/installing and it will finally get there. 2012 imac worked! crazy.
I got an error messages says if an error occurred preparing the software update, and it display a macos update assistant dialogue, any idea? Using ventura installation 13.2

thank you very much for making this video. I decided to upgrade my 2012 MacBook Pro Retina to Ventura in order to get the much improved siri app and shortcuts app. I tried reading other guides, and they seem to imply that you need two USB sticks in order to do this operation, but apparently not.
Followed step by step on my 2012 MacBook Pro and all went well… attempted on my late 2013 iMac and made it to the part where you restart holding option key… instead of taking me to the same screen, it just rebooted me to my internal hard drive version of catalina…. Do I need to remove my external hard drive then restart using option?
Thanks for this video! I manage to update my early 2013 15 inch Retina display 2.7Ghz Quad Core Intel Core i7 with 16GB RAM! It's like a brand new Mac! All my apps are working as it should except for one which is ExpressVPN which keeps crashing when I tried to login.

I have followed this video through twice. The first time ended up wiping my OS and I had to go to another computer to make a bootable drive to reinstall OS Catalina. Finally got everything back and decided I would try again. Fails at the 14:40 in the video where the machine immediately starts the second install on the USB and then fails. Does not provide any time to select the hard drive. Probably will just stick with OS Catalina on the mid 2012 MacBook Pro and keep the Ventura upgrade on my 2017 MacBook Retina. Thanks for trying though.
Absolutely brilliant, just followed instructions, and updated my MBP mid 2012 from Catalina, wow so much smoother & faster. I updated rather than a wipe and fresh install.
Thank you SO much - was able to upgrade to Ventura 13.4 (June 2023) on my 2012 15-in MacBook Pro (have upgraded Ram & hard drive prior). It's mostly working just fine, but if you should see this - my laptop won't sleep now though & some clicks are very slow to respond when moving docs around & closing tabs...I've tried every fix I could google & still not working...
When building the installer, do not panic if the number of bytes written stops increasing for a few minutes. At first it looked like nothing was happening to me, but after about 3 minutes it started working again :)
I get: “an error has occurred preparing the software update.” I’m not able to proceed further. Any help will be appreciated. Going to Google and see if there is a solution.

Did this happen around 12 min left for the actually install?
@@g4ll0-og7gc No. it occurred right after pressing “Agree” after pressing continue when first starting the installation process.
Hello bro currently having this issue, immediately i click on continue after clicking agree, i get the error message "error occurred while preparing the installation", please can you explain a bit more on how you fixed this. Thanks
Its a shame that once apple drop support for intel macs, it won’t be possible to do something like this
Yeah, that is definitely a shame.
The days are numbered.
We got 3 more years…
@@rephaelreyes8552 that’s assuming apple don’t have another large jump in the supported models (next year they might go from 2017 or newer to 2019 or newer, if my suspicions on what they are doing is correct)

I tried to install on mid 2012 MacBook pro ,but I got stuck at Mac os update assistant? So what should i do? Would you help please?
ditto. LaN connected but nothing.
Straight tutorial! I love it! One thing you forgot to mention is to disable SIP (csrutil disable in terminal from recovery mode) i was confused at first, but then realize i havent disable SIP, it was 5 times failed on creating installer step until i realize this
Can you walk me through that step?
What a steal
Have you set up Ventura on your older Mac?
If so, how is it working for you?
I just update my late 2013 MacBook Pro to Ventura,
and I feel every thing work the same just like Monterey.
My 2012 MBP and 2016 MBP, both updated. Both working great
i’ve updated my MBP 2014 13 inch, however the universal control doesn’t works. How about you guys?
I lost my recovery partition after this process.
thank you for this video. Clear, step by step explaination really help me. took me 2 days to installed the os on my thumbdrive 😂
For these legacy architectures, I think it ultimately makes more sense to install a modern Linux distro and use that to virtualize the latest macOS (e.g. via VirtualBox) instead. But maybe that’s just me. To each their own! 🍏🐧
I agree.. I have videos, on my channel, about that as well.
Most modern Linux distros work much better than Ventura on these machines.
Is your Mac a 8gb ram or 16gb
I have upgraded my early 2008 MBP (A1260) to Ventura and it works pretty well.
One caveat I've noticed however, is that it doesn't see my old 1TB internal PATA drive.
Neither showing in Finder or Disk Utility - it is plugged in where the DVD drive would've been originally.
The internal SSD it's installed on shows correctly.
Any options to get it to show via 3rd party software?
How did you do it
@@francismbulo I used Open Core Legacy Patcher. Although my old pata drive wont show.
Thank you for the very very fine business - my old MacBook Pro 2012 is now comming to live with the new Ventura OS.
Thank you so much! Just got Ventura 13.2 on my Macbook Pro 15'' mid-2012. It works great so far.
Excellent!
First video on RUclips that work exactly how it was explained! So happy 🎉 Thank you boss 😊
I’ve followed your video step by step running the same i5 MacPro and ran into the exact same issues you did in the same exact places using build 0.6.2. Lol!
Thanks for the video! Looking forward to the latest features and hopefully more functionality. Cheers!
Updated my MBP mid 2012 to Venturer - works great. No option to open or log in with Apple Watch option. otherwise no problems. Great work!!!!!
Thanks a lot! I've followed your previous tutorial, for those having issue, maybe this is useful:
I've tried installing Monterey and it kept showing damaged installer, so I tried venture, it was ok up to 70% install and then it showed error to prepare the update, I then read somewhere that it can be caused by the faulty ram, so I removed one of the plates, and then I had it again and I realized I just need to connect internet, but I didn't have an ethernet cord, and my hotspot was troublesome to connect, so It kept showing the error, but I just tried again and then it somehow installed. When it first loaded the mouse was freezing, but when I patched the video card it all became normal, and actually subjectively it feels faster than Catalina. Even Final Cut is very fast (at least with 1080 video)
Hey brother same problem here how can i solve my problem?
@@Hassaanmalik10 try connecting your Mac to internet via Ethernet cable. And if you see an error just keep clicking ok, rebooting and trying again. I think this is what eventually worked for me to install Ventura. I had no luck with Monterey though.
Thanks for this video, I did have the install come up with error message, but leave it self rebooting/installing and it will finally get there. 2012 imac worked! crazy.
I got an error messages says if an error occurred preparing the software update, and it display a macos update assistant dialogue, any idea?
Using ventura installation 13.2
Took my time and did this as a new MAC user. Thank you, this was very detailed

thank you very much for making this video. I decided to upgrade my 2012 MacBook Pro Retina to Ventura in order to get the much improved siri app and shortcuts app. I tried reading other guides, and they seem to imply that you need two USB sticks in order to do this operation, but apparently not.
Thanks a lot, I just finished to upgrade my mid 2012 MacBook Pro and it works great. I didn’t made a fresh install, I upgraded from Catalina. Regards
can i make a clone copy to ssd to use to boot my macbook pro after this installation...
You can clone it to your ssd. That’s what I did when I cannot install it directly to my SSD
Awesome. It worked well for me. I was able to install Ventura to my mid 2012 MBP

Thank you it took me like 4 hours but I’m done ✅ I love this type of computers I bought my MacBook Pro mid 2012 on September 2017 why because this one had the best reviews in performance and resistance also cd/dvd drive and I thought Mac wouldn’t forget about them in a future I was wrong my computer was bran new when Apple took it off his updating list not supported anymore I stayed like that until my programs took hours to load then last year I decided it to upgrade internally so had to do some changes and then able to upgrade to Monterey now thanks to you I’m able to upgrade to Ventura thank you for your help really love the step by step video 😊
Brilliant tutorial! It worked like a charm. Thank you so much!
Does anyone else have their MacBook boot into the boot menu at every start-up?

When building the installer, do not panic if the number of bytes written stops increasing for a few minutes. At first it looked like nothing was happening to me, but after about 3 minutes it started working again :)
If only I saw your comment earlier..
