I’ve been doing been doing Wim Hoff method to battle anxiety and depression and it’s slowly but surely helping. My anxiety and depression definitely stem from my self worth-issues and lack of confidence which plays out from trauma that happened to me in the past. I just got a cold plunge tub and something about doing ice baths seems the most cathartic and healing. I look forward to doing more WHM.
Did you do the breathing before the cold showers
@@jays.b1997 yes, wim has said that the breathing should be done before. But if you wanna sit in snow or something you continue to do the deep breathing while you're there. Also if you wanna take a hot shower but also wanna continue doing cold showers make sure to do the cold after the hot to finish.
How is your health now?
Social media, and therefore the unending flood of trivial, fear-based information into our minds, is the worst public health crisis of our time.
True , i stopped watching news and my mental health improved

@@SHIVANJAY619 me too! I realised that the news is actually old, nothing new to read, just same old nightmares being fed to us to cause us to feel afraid. I just connect to people in person, and watch inspiring videos on youtube.

I am doing this method for one week now,the interesting part is this,i have always problem with my bowel, every single morning.Between breathing sessions i feel move in my intestines, and some sounds. The result is that i don't have the problem that i had in the past, loose stool etc.I cannot believe how this method is related to other organs of the body beside the mind.
I was wondering if this method would help my gastric issues. This is the first comment I’ve read that mentions this. Thanks for letting us know!
POWERFUL!
Given that stress can be such a strong factor to health....it stands to reason that creating the opposite could have a strong impact.
So true
awesome vid. Rich Roll and the Iceman, winning combination. Some great take-aways here, thanks!
I was really into this at one point and it got me through a tough time. i dont know why i stopped.
There's no better time than now to start back up again
Great work giving it a good go and pleasantly surprised. Very easy to do conscious breathing followed and a quick cold shower in the morning. Very quick! Ha ha.
Man is a genius
Yes indeed
not sure if its a placebo but after using the method for about 3-4 weeks breathing in the morning and cold showers, and I feel like I can stay in the present just a slightly longer, when I make decisions there more clear, the stress I can manage it, staying calm under noise or interruptions, more relaxed, I seek challenge I always have but I'm consistent more so
bro its not a placebo at all, unless we all get the same palcebo effect but that would be unlikely lol
I admire your legacy and messages, and I am real fan thereof 😘 thank you for it ,I suffer know from crps, and I am undegoing hyperbaric OXYGEN treatment, it really helps, step by step 🙌
What's crps?
Finesse Muse Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome
Well in reality when you are in stress, your fight-or-flight mechanism is working in overdrive. You just act instinctively. For eg if you saw a bear, you would run automatically. You dont have to consciously follow the process. This happens when your prefrontal cortex shuts down which is responsible for emotions, calculations, theorising etc. So in stress you lobotomise yourself. But when you do wim hof method or meditate or do rythmic breathing, this slows down your fight-or-flight response and your pre frontal cortex can work optimally which gives you more control over your emotions.
Could that then dampen you response to danger?
@@peterstuart9699 no it allows u to think more clearly and make better decisions under high stress situation i am a boxer and i love doing the wim hof method it really helps along with training that is
@@combatsportsaddict2334 Thanks. That makes sense.
@@peterstuart9699 Yeah, like combat sports said...it pretty much does the opposite of dampening. Usually you only get to fight or flight...well in fight or flight. Going there on a consistent basis and being conscious in that moment allows you to really connect with yourself.

Has anyone fallen unconscious during the wim hof breathing exercise? I did, I pushed myself a bit too far holding my breath after exhalation, during the 2nd round. Wim warns people about it but I did not expect it would happen to me. I was holding my breath and the next thing I know I am waking up and taking a breath..it was for a few seconds only. I took a normal breath, didn't even feel I was gasping for air..It was very interesting to experience that..
Eduarda Marques check out wim hof with kelly slater, surfer, he also passes out
it is normal, just slow down and cut back if it worries you and/or happens too much
This guy is like john wick.
This is why I love the comments ..awesome
Am I the only one who noticed that wim wasn’t breathing through his nose the whole time? Every time he finishes a sentence you can hear him breath through his mouth... I thought maybe he is so used to “hyperventilate” that he does it unconsciously...
You can hear him do his deep breathing as well when Rich is talking.
It helps to allow yourself to be present.
Where exactly did he describe the technique? I feel lost, even though I do know some stuff about the brain.
Deep meditation:)
Search for "Wim Hof method", there are plenty of videos explaining it.
I was lost too. I heard the meditation but ...😒
check out his JRE episode he and joe do it on air
Take a cold shower for at least 30 seconds to wake up your system get it in high gear. I take a five min myself.
Second try the deep breathing he talks about by just taking a deep breath and let go and repeat do it till you start to feel the effects (pressure in your face nose forehead tingling throughout the body ) and when you really start to feel that let go of all the air and hold it for as long as possible and then fully inhale and hold it for as long as possible and that’s it. If you do this correctly you will start to hear 👂 the effects a blissful tone ( seriously ) and you’ll feel your whole body vibrating . In total of breaths umm probably around 50- 80 whatever you can tolerate or till you really feel it.
I did this technique but I feel like I have high blood pressure after doing it. Any advice from anyone?
Where exactly did he describe the technique?
How do you know what high blood pressure feels like? Feeling tingly and being lightheaded is normal that's why you're supposed to do this lying down. if you're not feeling better afterwards you might need to modify what you're doing to better suit you.
No you're just an over thinker nothing to do with blood pressure.
Yeah, the feeling has nothing to do with blood pressure, you're just not used to the levels of oxygen you're experimenting with. Keep practicing, your body will adapt.
Thank GOD for cannabis
This is good. However, I've only heard Wim Hoff explain this multiple times . "At the universities their studying me".
Are there any reliable studies available to read that back up what he talks about?
I've tried the breathing after doing his 10 week course with a friend. Yea, I felt slightly more happy immediately after it. However my depression and mood didn't improve during the day. Perhaps I'm an oddity if it works for everyone else
Lt H U got a point
You are not an oddity, but just to believe that you can not get better holds you back .....let all the thoughts go during the exercise...it works
When he says meditation. What is he referring to? I'm guessing this is when he holds his breath? What do you focus on when holding the breath?
I've watched a bunch of his videos but he tends to repeat the exact same things. He hasn't really discussed what he's doing in terms of meditation.
I've done a lot of TM. But I don't really understand how holding your breath is meditation? Yes, it feels interesting when doing WH exercises but I'm not sure it's meditation
Lt H meditation means to me concentrating on what my breath is doing and how my body acts when my mind is focusing on the breaths. Being conscious of the breath means i am not thinking as much on thoughts running through my brain. Meditation allows my brain time to rest from processing loads of racing mind thoughts whilst focusing on one local thought, that is the breath. Breath is the one continuous presence I can rely on to bring me back to myself and calm my racing mind.
It most definitely is meditation. When you are focusing purely on how your body feels while doing WHM you are meditating.
Meditation is not an act, it is a state of mind that can be achieved through performing the act of 'sitting still and doing nothing'. He has past experience with the practice of spiritual techniques so it would be my guess that he is able to enter and exit the state of meditation at will. This is normal for anybody who practices the act religiously :)
That is only one form of meditation friend. Just google what meditation means. Try the WHM. It's great!
When you hold your breath you just have to stop thinking about holding your breath. I focus myself the tips of my toes and think oxygenated and relaxed, and so on with all parts of the body till my skull.
by that time it will be easier to just observe your body without thinking..
hope that helps..
Society makes sure that you stay stuck in the 25% zone.
Very interesting. Does it also helps people who suffer chronic hyperventilation?
Did'nt learn how to break cycle
Wasn’t physical exercising also a way to break a cycle ?
Hello Rich: I'm 70 years old and recently tried Wim Hof's breathing technique. After a few hours I had bad stomach/abdominal pain and discomfort and ended up in bed for most of the day, unable to eat anything. This lasted for approximately 36 hours.
As I write this comment my stomach is STILL upset. Thoughts and advice would be appreciated. Thank You.
Try to google your problem or see a doctor.

@@danieloleary1129 It's normal to have a very strong reaction because this method is very powerful, especially for those who are... unhealthy. If there is a way for you to keep doing it, you should try but consult your doctor first.
Daniel O'Leary Maybe you went to rough on it. Try doing it less intense.
@@danieloleary1129 I've had some pretty intense experiences while practising this technique, but all in all my experience has been very positive. Maybe just try cycling through the exercise once per day (working your way up to hours of practice) and then a cold shower after? I think it would be important to go at your own pace ensuring that you're getting to a a somewhat deeper level of oxygenation, exhale comfortably and hold till you feel discomfort (wim advises not to force anything) and then deep breath in and hold for 15 secs (this part is the magic for me haha.) I'm only 30 so my circumstances are not the same as yours, but whenever i have noticed something that has happened (tweak in a muscle or whatever) it has generally worked out positively (my back opened up and i stop experiencing neck and shoulder tension) I've also found stretching (yoga) helps me to get oxygen to parts of my body that are usually tense. I also found that changing my diet (cutting out sugar essentially) (more ketogenic diet, periodic fasting) and mindfulness meditation all helped my ability to heal myself. Much love feel free to ask any questions :)

when you do the breathing excercises, it sends more blood to the brain stimulating the parts that make you feel good.
Adam G thanks you
Is it normal to feel bad/weak after the very first Wim Hof breathing excercise you do?
I tried this method yesterday for the first time.
At that moment, I felt amazing.
But today, I feel sick.
Symptoms of light fever, headaches and a weird, uncomfortable feeling in my stomach.
Any tips for what I should do?
acai
You should probably stop.
Keep breathing, the technique is super beneficial for dispelling feelings of illness (the initial first hold of breath introduces adrenaline etc to deal with inflammation (typically the 'illness' that you feel) It's gotten to the point now where i (personally, can only speak for myself) will breath through any discomfort (physical or mental) and have achieved astounding results. I definitely experienced some strange results when starting out though (i attribute it to dealing with all the damage i had done prior with sugar and lack of exercise) This only happened for the first few days with me. Just my advice though, do what feels right :)

As someone below already pointed out, meditation is also known as prayer. They are essentially the same thing, both quiet the frontal lob, and activate the deeper, calmer inner brain (sorry I don't have the medical names off hand...but you know what I mean). I find it deeply saddening that here in the U.S., the Left has demonized religion, and therefore by default harbors ill feelings, and resists, the practice of prayer. The Left promotes the self, the conscious self, above all else. This is an inherently unhealthy view of how one should see him/herself in the world, and is the opposite of the spiritual view, which is the basis of our spiritual, and therefore emotional and physical, health. When we focus on the self, as we ignore the spiritual, we deny the very essence of who we are in this world/universe.
Very well said, yes I can see the problem with modern society now.
Pretty sure Wim and many of his followers are left leaning. The method stems from eastern mysticism. No need for a god to be spiritual.
This is all very well, but it doesn’t disguise that his 10 week course / access to an app is 249 Euros! If he wanted to benefit humanity it would be free. The most desperate, needy people have the least money, so the entire approach is disingenuous. He is not running a non-profit enterprise. Health for the wealthy, not the masses.
Meditation does not break the cycle of feeling bad bc when i open my eyes...
You need to do it enough to actually change the brain.
Its like working out, you can’t do it once in a blue moon and expect to be arnie.
It's cumulative, you don't get something for nothing, daily practice.
Err....... I think he's lost me with all that. 😯
My intuition is that Wim has a tremendous amount of knowledge and wisdom to share. But, for the life of me, I can not understand what he is saying. My wish is that Wim joins with a Dutch speaking writer, and Wim imparts is knowledge to the writer in Dutch and the writer writes a book in Dutch. Then hire a professional translator to translate the book into English.
