    One of the best parts of historical costuming is making historical clothing that you can wear in daily life-- it's called historybounding, and it's a great way to get more wear out of your historical fashion. So when I wanted a new dress for a fancy New Year's Eve party outfit, I made one I could wear for Roman period costume and for with Regency dress too! And, of course, a sewing vlog about it. I put together this super simple chiffon dress based on a Roman dress called the stola. It's only got four seams, so it's super quick and easy and would make great beginner historical sewing projects for anyone who wants a DIY NYE dress. The history of clothing and fashion is cyclical, and it's great to have a style that works for multiple periods of fashion history.
    If you're wondering what to wear with a dress like this, I got you! To show how versatile this historical dress is, I made a little historical lookbook with three ways to wear it! Firstly, there's my NYE party look, mixing the neoclassical aesthetic with modern dancewear and sparkly party makeup. Next is the Ancient Roman outfit, which isn't historically accurate but is fun, comfy, and great for SCA events or any costume event outdoors in hot weather. The stola is worn over a simple chiton made of a length of repurposed linen, tied with a ribbon belt, and finished off with a Roman style veil called a palla. In Ancient Rome this outfit would be for married women, but since a crinkle silk chiffon dress isn't period correct to begin with, I'm just going for Roman dress DIY vibes. For the Regency look, this dress is a perfect and period appropriate way to get more use out of simple Regency garments like a white cotton dress. The early Regency period of historical fashion was obsessed with neoclassical style. Add the stola as an overdress to a plain dress like my first Regency dress sewing project, and you've got a colorful, distinctive, and stylish outfit that you didn't need to sew from scratch! Happy New Year to you all, and I hope you feel as great in your party dresses as I do in mine.

    I have a tunica and stola which I made for a Latin class event in Middle School, and I wear for Halloween. I've worn both pieces separately for modern parties. When I was researching the tunica I stumbled onto a historically accurate design which resembled the Doric peplos (but it's T-construction, like a tunica or a modern T-shirt rather than wrapped from the side like a chiton of peplos). It was 2006 when I made this, so it was on-trend for the time😂. I often used it kind of like a full slip, especially with one particular skirt that I adored but was too bottom-heavy to wear without a belt. I liked that I could hide the heavy-duty ugly belt that I needed to hold the skirt up under the blousing. I could wear a scarf as a top without worrying about it slipping, or a cropped jacket without worrying about my belly showing (I have ugly poison ivy scars, so I never show my stomach). The stola was made of not historically accurate flannel, because I could only justify making it if it could be a Halloween costume and I lived in Massachusetts at the time. It *is* accurate in being open at both sides though, which I also did on purpose so that it could be worn over a shirt and slacks for modern events. When I wear the tunica and stola as a Roman costume, I have a matching pashmina (a little longer than the typical palla, but it's technically historically accurate since scarves in this style were worn in Parthia and could be bought in Roman cities), hair net, and costume jewelry of my grandmother's. I went for a lower-class look on purpose, because I'm too cheap for hair extensions and salon styling (or jewelry with real gemstones): so it's all in red, white and charcoal gray. I only realized after assembling the costume that it's the exact combination of lower class and fashion-conscious which a sex worker circa the year 30 AD might have worn. So I accidentally made a Mary Magdalene costume😂.

    The first historical garments I made were for a speech when I was 14 (in 1994) on ancient Greek theater, and it was, unsurprisingly, very similar to what you just made! I would love to see a hair tutorial including how to do the Regency/Roman bandeau hair style, that's not something I have been able to figure out how to do, though I have repeatedly tried!

      The only historical outfit I've made was in high school, when I made a stola and tunica (Snappydragon uses the word chiton here, but I believe strictly speaking that would refer to the Greek garment the tunica, as it is known in Latin, was based on) out of bedsheets for Latin club, topped with a purple sheet used as a palla. Not the most authentic fabrics, but I was pretty proud of myself, since we didn't even have a sewing machine. I copied a hairstyle I saw on a bust at a Pompeii exhibit. This was helped by the early 2000s monstrosity called the Bump It.

Everyone was just happy to see me in something that wasn't work pants with paint on them, and I was happy that I could bounce around and not care that I hate bras :P I'm planning to make a full length linen one (probably with sleeves) once I know how much fabric I have (I have 5m of purple linen and will be using some of it for a Victorian Walking Skirt).

    • @nicolescats2
      @nicolescats2 8 месяцев назад

      There's just so many simply constructed garments from warm weather countries due to the climate. When your outer dress is also your only dress, you need more of them meaning they need to be easy to construct. Same goes for outdresses with a slip that doesn't cover everything, leading to bare skin touching the outer garment. While this overdress wasn't touching skin, the right to wear one was restricted to married women. Meaning that plenty of fashion from the period involved dresses with nothing underneath, limiting the silhouettes and design elements that could become popular in the area.

I kinda wanted to make something but i dont have much time and Im on a fabric buying freeze until I get through several yards that have projects assigned to them. However this project seems very quick. And as I mentally flipped through my fabric stash a couple of possibilities shone through. One of my "Whole 30" fabric stash projects is a gauze regency dress I could temporarily commandeer that fabric and sew it in a way that i can easily reuse the fabric to finish the regency dress OR see if the loose weave wool i have could work as well. If so thats another few yards out of the stash that i hadnt even planned on.

Being as she is homeschooled and going to a homeschool dance she won't have to deal with the mean words that other kids might say. Homeschool kids are a differnt breed and more welcoming. Last spring we did a regency dress. Something we literally made from fabric from my stash and slapped together in about a week. She got so many compliments on her drss and even had one girl recognize the era. Can we say new bestie? This time we have a little more warning and can put the time into the tailoring of a bodice. I'm cheating a little and bought the corset, lobster tail and petticoat to give us more time to focus on the dress. Like so many others, I have some familiarity with both Regency and "Greco-Romanesque". As for personal aesthetics, the latter for me. But, the party one actually looks easiest to move in & most "breatheable", if the air circulation of a venue is an issue.

Lol I might even make one to get married in since I love the Roman style and I can make it as fancy as I want depending upon what I use for fabric. This is very pretty! I love the Roman version the most. I miss shows like I, Claudius and Rome, idk why they don't make more. There are so many interesting periods of Roman history that could make for great drama. We never really see the *birth* of the Republic, I don't think there's any decent adaptation of Hannibal's shenanigans or the Gracchi, or even Marius and Sulla. Or the third century crisis. I'd even take a new Quo Vadis adaptation if it followed the damn book for once.
