- Is this the end of Banjo Kazooie? On the 25th anniversary of Banjo Kazooie long time Rareware members like Grant Kirkhope seem to think that there's no future for Banjo on Xbox or Switch. BUT I think there is.

this makes me really sad, since i watched this interview... we Banjo Fans really deserved a new game, i know alot of loyal fans.. this is devastating..
Really hope someone picks up the series
@@scasm Grant Kirkhope pointed at UBISOFT Milan's development team in his interview! He said they're the most legible team compared to the sense of humor they used to have back in the old days at Rare!
@@kostismpak1266 I recommend Demon Turf Neon Splash, Hat in Time, and Tinykin as Banjo successors.
HEY WIFEY HOW'S THE CAOULDRON BOILIN?
My god I am not even as old as the second game, yet hearing "nobody wants it" is crazy...
There is a MASSIVE audience for it, let new generations grow up with new Banjo!!! They also should of made Grunty's Revenge a GameCube game...
so much potential and for some reason they just don't care. it's crazy!
That's what you get for crying about Nuts and Bolt. And that game was good
Even though I prefer the first 2 games, Nuts and Bolts in my opinion wasn't really bad. It had a decent storyline and cool levels.
Grant Kirkhope did not do Conker's soundtrack. That was Robin Beanland.
You’re right! Was talking too fast but good catch
And also did you know the opening music and knocking on the screen by Banjo in the Banjo Kazooie game? Grant was inspired from an old song by Swedish Agnetha disco band!😢
@@kostismpak1266 oh didn't know that but that's cool!
@@scasm Strange thing is nobody has officially ever refered to that! Not even Grant him self!!! Hey scasm! Do you think we could use that as a threat to bring back Banjo Kazooie?😂🤣🤣😅

I love you remasters of banjo ❤😊
WHAT UP PROJECT DREAM! Love your channel also😁
You hit the nail on the head here. I don't think anyone with any insight on game development would actually WANT Rare to work on a new Banjo game, at this point. The fact that Greg Mayles was so adamant on shoehorning vehicles into a 3D platformer franchise, and the fact that he nonchelantly said he'd "fix it later" when Sea of Thieves launched a buggy, boring, shallow experience, should have raised red flags for everyone. They're the ones who ruined their own IP's, and even Playtonic, the "former talent who made a spiritual successor" phoned it in when working on Yooka-Laylee. The last thing we need is someone who doesn't even care about 3D platformers working on one, especially when they don't wan't to in the first place.
Also, as an aside, one of my college tutors was a former Rare employee, and he REALLY didn't like Greg. Any time Greg was the topic of conversation, he'd follow it up by shaking his head and sighing "Never liked him." or when we were talking about the Yooka-Laylee kickstarter and discussing the way they laid out the project plan "So this is Steve Mayles. Couldn't stand his brother." I just thought that was pretty funny.
In today's market, any 3D platformer, even collectathon platformers, can thrive, and while they might not make Fortnite money, they'll find their target demographic. Enough eyes are on Banjo now that, were Banjo Threeie announced right now, it'd break the internet. The trailer would reach millions of views and counting, so there'd be lots of eyes on the franchise coming back after so long. These tired old hacks at Rare no longer have the foresight to realise how much people want games like this, or realise collectathon platformers have their own unique strengths that appeal to people who love exploration and treasure-hunting. It's why collectathons are my favourite subgenre, I find games like Banjo, Spyro, Jak & Daxter and Tinykin to be mesmerising.
Super Mario Odyssey is part of that subgenre, and managed to sell tens of millions of copies, with some regarding it as their favourite Mario game of all time (myself included!), and Activision/Toys for Bob proved there's an audience for Spyro and Crash (Crash 4 especially proving a new developer can carry the torch of a franchise). And then you've got the plethora of 3D platformers from the indie scene, like Snake Pass, A Hat In Time, Super Sami Roll, Demon Turf, Here Comes Niko, Tinykin (LOVE this one) and Clive 'N' Wrench just this year. Not all of these are collectathons, but they've all found an audience of people singing their praises to varying degrees of success, made by people with absolute faith in the genre's potential.
If these Rare devs really think there's no audience for games like this today (which there is, if they did any research beyond their office walls), then they have to realise that they're responsible for that, letting the franchise lie dormant for 14 years after their last game deviated from the core appeal of the series. Nuts & Bolts isn't entirely a bad game, in fact a lot of what I enjoyed about that game can be found in Zelda TOTK. But to slap the Banjo brand on it was a mistake.
If Devil May Cry, DOOM, Crash Bandicoot, Metroid, and Pikmin can all make a comeback after years of lying dormant, and reach critical and commercial success, there's no reason Banjo can't, especially if given to the right developer.
100% agree. There are devs that are more than capable of taking on Banjo and reviving the series in a bigger and better way, and could definitely find a new massive audience for it. All they need to do is make a good game, literally all it comes down to.
At the end of banjo tooie when gruntilda said "see you in banjo threeie" it gave so many children, including myself, hope.
The fact hes saying nobody wants it mind blowing.
yeah i don't understand how they can possibly think no one wants it or that there's not an audience for it. the game will foster a new audience by just being good.
Gruntildas last cruel joke.
"See you in Rayman 4!"
Yooka Laylee got criticized hard by the same people who called 3D platformers a dead genre. Then the Spyro remakes happened and the Crash remakes too. Suddenly everyone loves 3D platformers again. Now is the perfect time for Banjo to come back.
@@macuser7048 There actually was a Banjo Three in the works called Banjo vs Grunty. However Rare couldn't get Grunty's AI to work well, so the game was canceled.
Gregg Mayles believes that Banjo Tooie can't be toped.
Thankfuly are Banjo like games such as Demon Turf Neon Splash, Hat in Time, and Tinykin.
It should be a crime that a Banjo Threeie hasn't happened yet (Nuts and bolts doesn't count).During the switch life cycle was the perfect time. Hopefully they don't wait too long
Banjo was never met to continue. The original intention for Rare is to create an adventure game called Project Dream on the SNES, but it was moved to the N 64, it wasn't working for some reason. Mostly like because realistic games can be difficult to work on N 64, such as Golden Eye. So Project Dream became Banjo Kazooie.
However now that the N 64 era has ended, Rare no longer needs the Banjo and Kazooie. Why, DK 64. People did not like the backtracking of that game, and while Banjo Tooie's backtracking isn't as bad. Rare might be worried that another Banjo game would suffer the same problems as DK 64 if not worse. It's sad but it's true, some of the greatest games exists because of hardware limitations.
Thankfuly are Banjo like games such as Demon Turf Neon Splash, Hat in Time, and Tinykin.
The "no audience" excuse is honestly such a joke of an excuse. It doesn't make any sense no matter which way you look at it. The first Banjo didn't have an audience. The first Pokemon didn't have an audience. The first Mario didn't have an audience. Great games don't need a preexisting audience to be successful. They craft their own. Banjo is old enough that the newer generation of gamers might not even know who he is and will just assume he's a new IP, just as he was on the n64. And if they meant an audience for the genre, Spyro, Crash and Yooka Laylee proved that there's still a solid audience for 3d platformers and collectatons today.
Exactly. Especially since he's in Smash, I'm sure a huge number of people experienced Banjo for the first time through that. There are a million ways to find a new audience. All starts with a great game.
A new Banjo game would ABSOLUTLY blow up, that's just a given. The excuse of "nobody would care about it" is just stupid, Banjo in Smash and on the Switch Online service proved this wrong, people went crazy over both of them. If people would go crazy over a re-release, they would *absolutly* blow up.
They don't even have to make it a Banjo-Threeie, as long as it's a good platformer, even if it's 2D or something, people will love it.
If Rare doesn't want to do anything with the IP, they might as well sell it to another studio, that'll do something with them.
Yeah I think it’s crazy for them to think there isn’t an audience for it. It would be huge. Exactly, give it to someone willing to make a great game and make it actually happen
@@scasm It's really just a big missed opportunity having such beloved characters, yet not doing anything with them. And I'm not talking just about Banjo & Kazooie, a new Conker game would be huge as well. But Rare did say that they don't want to go back to older IPs, so we probably won't see a new Banjo-Kazooie or Conker game unless they sell these IPs.
would love a new Conker, one of my favorite games
@@its_apt i believe rare has said that they would be willing to let other people work on their IP if other dev studios go them and ask. Guess no one has asked.
@@ChrisPBacon-xn9up The fact that no one asked is even more depressing tbh
I don't exactly know how companies work. But it makes me wonder why Microsoft doesn't let their other studies make a new Banjo game instead of just only Rare?
It's possible they've asked and no one wanted to take a swing at it
Microsoft won't touch Banjo without Rare's permission.
A prime example is Battletoads, which got a revival made by a different studio, so that idea could be reality, and the only thing that could be necessary is the quality control from higher-ups
@@megalo_64 Oh yeah I forgot that Battletoads reboot was done by a different developer. So anything is a possibility as long as you have the right people willing to bring back Banjo. I never liked this whole only Rare can make Banjo and Conker games.
Oh but they'll milk their boring pirate simulator for years on end?
as long as it keeps generating them boatloads of cash
I would love to see new banjo game. But, you know, rare is just not what it used to be You can't come back It's sad but that's the truth😭😭 Every super smash Bros. Character's franchise keeps going. Except for banjo But you know Maybe 1 day never know😮😮🙂🙂🎆🎇✨️
all we can do is hope and wait :(
Stop comparing banjo to crash and spyro and other cookie cutter 3d platformers from the playstation. Banjo has alot more sophistication and soul, it's not just the platforming but the entire story and game mechanics, humor and charm. A new banjo shouldn't necassary be a new 3d platformer, but more of an open world setting with its theme. It would obviously be a lot more difficult to recreate than these random generic linear 3d platformers like crash. So retarded that these games even get compared, as bano is a masterpiece of its time, while crash is just a fun "click some buttons" plattformer.
i meant is more as in, if those games can exist today, and i agree they're the lesser versions of banjo, then surely banjo has a place in modern gaming
Grant Kirkhope didn't work on Conker and has only worked on DK64, none of the 2D games.
you're right!
Microsoft and Rare are so stubborn to make a brand new and real Banjo Kazooie game. It is so frustrating that they don't want to do anything with Banjo. A remake of the first and Tooie would've been nice.
Yeah it’s crazy. Exactly, don’t need a new game, just a remaster with nice lighting and some modern textures would be nuts
@@scasm I do think Toys For Bob(after the Activision buyout) or Double Fine Productions could do Banjo justice.
@@lyndseycarter1989 yup, both would be a perfect match

This video so perfectly articulates how I and SO MANY have felt for SO LONG. It's totally baffling to hear them presume there's no audience... Not only is there a massive audience for the Banjo IP itself, but there is also an audience that just wants more of this kind of game genre in general. The combination of solid 3D platforming, distinct level themes, collecting, adventuring, puzzles & tasks, and fantastic music make Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie so freaking precious, you just don't see that combination around anymore but it was absolutely golden. Merge it with some good modern game sensibilities (some customizations and mod support) and you will have an unstoppable franchise.
it honestly is so obvious that it would be a huge success that they gotta be actually smokin crack or something to say there's no place for it. a new banjo would be massive

Banjos n64 games are some of my favorite games but if you really think banjo can be the face of Microsoft in 2023 then you definitely are mistaken, this type of game is not as popular as you seem to think it is. Sure every game has its online audience of fans who like it but the cartoony platformer is not a heavy hitter sales wise anymore. A new game could do decent with sales but the average person who plays games this generation will not care for banjo kazooie. If you only focus on the corner of the internet that wants a new game then your perception will be clouded.

@@orangeslash1667 in the Pokemon games why don't you need to the feed the pokemon
@@JMPT That has nothing to due with Banjo.
Guh huh!
hey banjo nuts and bolts is awsome >:0
if nuts&bolts was awsome then why did it kill the entire franchise? it's microsoft's fault,it's no wonder rare thinks this way about fans,it's microsoft's fault for killing it
it didnt >:(@@eeveefennecfox
@@MDT_STUDIOS_TAG Don't listen to them. They're just another annoying pest that complains about everything.
@@SolarFarle yeah thx for reminding me that fact :)
@@MDT_STUDIOS_TAG No problem.
No he's right- nobody actually gives a fuck about Banjo Kazooie and it's overrated and especially not in the 21st century, it would be just a generic 3d platformer, yes some people buy those, but it's nothing to right home about
I mean perfect time to reinvent the franchise then in an exciting way. Doesn’t have to be a collectathon, can do anything with it and make it fresh and new
@@scasmThats pretty much what they did with Nuts and Bolts. The reception on that wasn’t the best.
I hate Rareware for this im so sick of sea of thieves
never could get in to sea of thieves. the gameplay loop just never clicked for me
@@scasm not only that but I feel like that's all they've been doing. It's all that's ever on Raretheif now. Rareware just used to have a lot of mystery that is gone now. I am glad we got Battletoads and Killer Instinct though..
Did you see those 64 dev carts that Tim Stamper showed off in those videos??
that's true. im interested in whatever they do with Everwild, but who knows when or if that's even still coming out. oh yeah with twelve tales? so cool @@daymanfighterofthenightman
