Composer's program note:
Summer Serenade was composed for the world-class young artists of the Jacobs String Academy as a violin ensemble work for the final concert of the 2024 summer session. Inspired by the electric energy, musicality and virtuosity that Mimi Zweig has instilled in thousands of young string players, Summer Serenade is a concerto grosso for four violin soloists, and a violin orchestra divided into two groups of young and younger virtuosi. The work begins with an explosion (including a glissando sound cloud for the youngest group) before focusing on a soaring lyrical line and its throbbing accompaniment.
