it's about him coming to terms with his father's suicide. he talks about it in one of his side projects
I don't want to speak for him, but the impression I got is that it is partly about his own thoughts of suicide. Thoughts that make him feel guilt out of his love for his family and friends, while at the same time feeling miserable and excruciatingly desperate for an escape, as well as coming to terms with his fathers death. The album is titled A Promise because after his father died he promised his mother he would never kill himself to spare his family the kind of brokenness his father left behind. "all that you left, you left for someone"

no, this was recorded before his dad killed himself. it's about his own desire to kill himself
@@JoshTheGreat33 it's true except for the part where his father had already died, A Promise was finished before his dad committed suicide. But the title absolutely does come from his mother making him promise not to kill himself. Jamie has said that that promise saved his life

this song reminds me of how when I was depressed I would layer several videos of Rush's Grand Designs to a rich cacophony and mesmerise myself to it with the footage of Colors of the Wind from Pocahontas with the audio muted. Noisy, nostalgic, cathartic. I was also piss drunk

The most twisted and demented pop song of all time.
While it is extremely dark and fucked up, especially given the context, I still find it kind of uplifting and cathartic somehow, it’s almost relaxing in a way. Jamie has said that it’s not a pro-s**cide song and I always interpreted it as finding an absurdist yet peaceful way to keep living even when it seems like there’s no point
