Can We Get Dolby Atmos For Cheap?? Well....

  • Here's how I built my home theater in 2021. I wanted to get Dolby Atmos in to my home for cheap, so I took a number of smart home components that I already had and managed to find a few ways to get Dolby Atmos content to play in my home.
    Was it cheap? Not really, but here's the cheapest solution I found:
    Amazon Fire TV Stick - geni.us/NewFir... (Amazon affiliate link)
    Amazon Echo Studio - geni.us/Amazon... (Amazon affiliate link)
    Amazon Echo Sub (tough to buy) - geni.us/BVv7KO8 (Amazon affiliate link)
    Here's how the different services went:
    Netflix - Surprise, surprise. This service has a top tier that does true HD and Dolby Atmos
    Disney+ - DID not work for me in Canada but could in the USA
    Apple TV - Works on Apple TV 4K with a Homepod ONLY, but doesn't offer Dolby Atmos on the Fire Sticks or Cubes. Annoying.
    Crave - 5.1 maximum
    Prime Video - Works with Dolby Atmos and Jack Ryan is an amazing experience, but not enough choice and doesn't tell me when it is working with Dolby!

    In the past year, I've experimented with different speaker setups for Atmos. See, the thing is... "Atmos" is nothing more than an audio codec that your receiver or output device is required to support. The point of it is to give you object-oriented sound, so which they can place sound in an exact location based upon your speaker setup.
    My living room, which I haven't build the surround sound for yet, will have a general 7.1 surround, but it'll then have 4 perfectly positioned in-ceiling speakers. The purpose here is to give the 7.1 surround 'height' to bounce each of those 4 surround speakers (Surround Front Left, Surround Front Right, Surround Rear Left, Surround Rear Right) an adjacent ceiling speaker to have NOW a 3D oriented space for sound to travel.
    See, the point of it isn't to give you 'spacial distance', it's to give the listener an actual location in your hearing proximity by balancing different inputs and frequencies.
    Say an explosion happens on the left of your TV Show, Movie or Video Game. They can pinpoint that exact location now by setting specific levels between those 4 left channels (surround front, rear left and overhead lefts) to give you a perfect 'location' in your hearing proximity.
    Additional to this is creating it in a way to where the listener is actually in a correct position to "hear" the difference. For mine, I put the surround fronts at a mid-wall, and the ceiling...on the ceiling lol. The rears, however, I put at the bottom of the wall, with the ceiling speakers on the ceiling. Exact in the listening position, about 1ft back from the couch. At least, that's the mapped out plans for when that room is finished up entirely.
    For the bedroom, this is where I went creative.
    Originally, I was going to do 4 wall mounted bookshelf speakers in listening position; So 2 at the front, to smaller ones next to each side of the bed pointed down. Then I realized the price of ceiling speakers was SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER than bookshelf speakers. Sure, I may already have 7 bookshelf speakers from my decade collection of "Yamaha speakers", but for $300 I could grab myself a singular higher-end Klipsch speaker, which would usually cost double for the cabinet. Or $150 for a pair of in-ceiling Yamaha's, which is usually that price for one. So I opted something different before putting drywall up. I put 4 speakers on the ceiling, and 2 in the stereo listening position (with a center of course) where the TV would go. My idea was simply that height in itself could makeup for the front-surround channels, and it 'should' work out well.
    And I set this one up last week, used the Atmos receiver (Denon 8k) with the laptop and put on Netflix, setup the laptop to 7.1 surround and properly setup each speaker to a proper listening level and adjusted each one.
    Putting on a Movie, TV Show or video game that supports Atmos feels like heaven compared to a traditional 7.1 surround sound. Projected down speakers, regardless of a 'pair' for the side (to give object orientation) still feels significantly MORE spatial than something such as a bookshelf set on a stand (or wall mounted) to the listening surround rears or fronts.
    So if I had to give anyone advice for a surround sound now in 2021. I would say if you have the expertise to run/fish cable through studs, or if you're redoing ceiling drywall anyway, do yourself a solid and get yourself some sweet in ceiling speakers at minimum. I tried doing "project off the top of the speaker" with this gimmick one I borrowed from a friend last year. This sounds NOTHING like that, and I have smaller ceilings (8ft lol). I can't imagine how people in 10ft or larger ceilings feel trying to use something that 'emulates' just putting a speaker in the ceiling. You're actually paying more too for those 'atmos projected' speakers than you are for just buying a good quality in ceiling speaker.
    And a note for the wise, if you buy cheaper in ceiling speakers, you can increase sound in the cavity by adding insulation or building a projected 'box' out of insulative materials that dampen sound in the cavity. The more dense you make the 'box' in that cavity, the more it'll create a bassier sound. I used Theatre Solution speakers for my bluetooth speakers that i put in each ceiling for 'all home audio', and I cannot stress this enough -- it really makes a big difference for even higher end speakers in ceilings too. If you already have insulation in the ceiling, cut yourself out just a section where the speaker sits, create a 'box' projection for it to bounce off. It'll probably create a little vibration on the floor above, but it's worth it for the extra bass. It really makes it soo much nicer.

    Brian, thanks for the reminder that the studios have that, I'd forgotten since I have 1 in the garage and 1 in the kitchen...but I've had it with all amazons software screw ups and dragging their feet for months without fixing stuff....so, I'm reducing my integration of smart speakers. I'm going back to soundbars, 2.1 computer speaker set ups and just use an echo dot for commands connected via hardwired 3.5mm. Now that I'll have 2 unused studios perhaps I'll play around with a firestick and echo sub in my office for the whole atmos thing.

The simple solution I found is to use a VPN service to stream from the USA The extra bonus is that you'll get access to more recent content as many movies & TV show are released in the USA before the rest of the world.

    EAC3 Spatial surround files or sideloaded apps that put out Spatial surround through the Fire TV Cube is the work around with the 2 Echo Studios Echo Sub setup. Any content push through Kodi can achieve Dolby Atmos. I had the original Xcloud app (Xbox Gamepass) streaming from my Xbox Series pushing Dolby atmos.( just use the Sound not the streaming video) Dolby 5.1 with toslink cables and splitters aren't that bad also.

    I had my two Echo Studios and Echo sub with 2nd Gen Fire TV Cube for about a year now. Coming from a AVR Dolby 5.1 set up. I'm thrilled with these Home Theater set up. I have the two Studios in front of my TV with the Sub around my Sofa area to add that extra feeling of sound.
    All three provides tremendous amount of bass. So, I have to leave them in the negative area in the app settings. I like to play around with placement or EQ settings but I never have enough time.
    I'm starved for Echo Studio YT video content. I have YT music subscription also a Amazon HD subscription and you can use YT Music from the youtube app. I like to find apps with spatial surround Dolby Atmos for work arounds to include with other devices.
    I'm disappointed Amazon didn't mention the Studio that much during the last press event. Other then Billie Eilish model. I'm starved for Echo Studio content. If you find any Echo Studio content, speaker placement, stands or pass through for other devices. Please make more videos for the few of us that realize that this ia good affordable alternative to a Dolby Atmos home theater system.

    As far as I’m exited to use my echos for multiroom (sadly the fire Tv is stil not able to be used as source for multiroom), as low of expectations I have for them to be a home theater...
    My real 5.2.2 system doesn’t give me the full atmos experience, so how could a system like that do it.
    Its so critical to have the right speakers, the right setup and placement and room treatment to enjoy real atmos...
    A 2.1 system wouldn’t do it. And some small echos wouldn’t do the trick...
    You need 2-5 ceiling level speakers and at last 4-5 speakers on the ground level...

      The interesting thing about the Studio is it fires in a few directions and does try to sense where people are in the room in order to create the experience. It's definitely not going to work with the echoes, but this is a different speaker. That's why I was using that.

    Bro you won't even know what I went through to get Atmos. First I bought Sonor Arc hoping it's enough, considering having Arc not eArc TV. Arc turned to be not enough, I had to get 2.1 hdmi cables (but supposedly 2.0 are fine but 2.1 wouldn't hurt), not mentioning the content in Atmos, got a brand new fire stick, with all that no Atmos. Tons of research, this and that I found a device called Arcana. It has an eArc output that goes to my (any) hdmi soundbar port, in my case it was into an Sonos Arc bar. Took me a while to accomplish what I wanted but finally can hear Atmos. Disney plus has most content from all of these apps, recently watched newest Mortal Kombat on HBO max also in Atmos. Still its not what I want cuz I'm missing rear speakers plus Sonos Sub, but with stands it's close to $1500 with taxes and everything, but eventually I'll get all that.
    It's a hell of a journey to get Atmos, bit frustrating but it's possible!

Also it's all going through Hue Sync box, still getting Atmos so the fact that Hue Sync passes Atmos is true.

    My Chromecast gives me a ton of Dolby Atmos content across most services - at least my AVR says so. Honestly though - hook up some wired speakers to your AVR. Lol.

    Are you unable to get Atmos on Disney plus because of your speaker and TV selection? Atmos and Dolby Vision is indeed available on Disney Plus in Canada with the correct equipment.

    • @AutomateYourLife
      @AutomateYourLife  3 года назад

      I've checked with Disney and they said Canada is not available. Plus I've looked through the site and it always says 5.1 and not Dolby. How are you seeing it?

    • @nucks4cup75
      @nucks4cup75 3 года назад +1

      @@AutomateYourLife I'm also in Canada myself (just outside Vancouver) and I've watched endgame several times in atmos on Disney Plus, along with the entire Marvel lineup. It will show HDR, or Dolby Vision, as well as Atmos instead of 5.1 once the compatible equipment is connected. Both my TVs have built in Atmos, but I use a full AVR setup in the livingroom. I've used several sources as well, including my LG TV app, the app on my Nvidia Shield, casting to my Chromecast ultra, and also on using Xbox One X.
      I don't have a Firestick anymore. It is entirely possible it's the app on that FireStick which is not capable of Atmos and also likely not HDR or dolby vision either. But the service itself with the correct equipment is for sure available in Canada.

    • @AutomateYourLife
      @AutomateYourLife  3 года назад

      Yeah it's the site that gets me Chris. Not countering what you're saying but it clearly states 5.1 on the movie listing here in Canada.
      Anyways, glad you've got it working!

    • @PureHaole
      @PureHaole 3 года назад

      Agree with OP it's an equipment issue. Canadian here with ATV 4K going through a receiver and enjoying a bunch of Disney+ Atmos content (simple 5.1.2 setup).

    Are you happy now? I broke down and purchased a new phone bringing me from Android 8 to Android 11, so now I can have Alexa dark mode. (Samsung A52 5G) Besides my recharge cycle was down to about 2 hours of heavy usage. Would have liked to have WiFi 6 touted on the Samsung S21 Ultra, but it wasn't worth the extra $700. Besides, they've been fumbling with WiFi 6 for two years now and don't seem to have a solid standard everyone follows. As I stated before I miss those removable batteries, which are no more, but now to add to the corporate greed the flagship phones are doing away with MicroSD capabilities and forcing you to buy phones with different amounts of built-in expansion memory for a higher price. What a rip. At least the one I just bought still has MicroSD capabilities and a headphone jack. LOL They are promising 4 years of support for it. We shall see.
