Just found this receiver at my local goodwill for $98.00! Grabbed it immediately, seemed odd to have something so new there but all ports work with no issue, just no remote or calibration mic. I programed my harmony remote for the receiver and it is working well. Will integrate atmos speakers soon, but just wanted to say how nice this receiver is. Sound is very clear.
I own two of these recievers and I strongly suggest you contact the manufacturer to get a replacement remote for this model for calibration. I don't use the mic but the very basic on screen menu is complimented strongly by the display menu of the reciever itself and navigating is much easier with remote. Make sure you enable the hdmi as your input to enable full bandwidth to your channels or you won't be getting the real sound this unit can produce. Good luck
I have owned the Sony STR-DH790 for over a year. Best feature I love is being able to play my music via Bluetooth. So far, I have a 3.2 Surround setup. 2 Sony SS-F7000, 4 way tower speakers for left and right. 1 Sony SSCS8 for center Channel, 1 Klipsch R-10SW sub and I just picked up a Klipsch R-12SW at Costco for less than $180. I haven’t added any rear or ceiling speakers yet. Very happy with my setup!
I got this exact set up per your recommendation. One of the satellites acquired a buzzing sound after a week when it hit a certain frequency. Wrote to Klipsch and they said "the Sony STR-DH790 outputs 145W per channel at 6 ohms, which translates to roughly 108W per channel when driving an 8 ohm speaker. The satellites in the Reference Theater Pack are only rated at 50W continuous, so they are being overdriven by a significant amount. We generally recommend staying within + or - 20% of the rated power handling, so a max of 60W on these in particular." Thankfully they are sending me another satellite for free but they also told me not to crank my sound too loud which I don't anyway but would be nice to know in future. Buyer beware.
Dude so glad a saw this video I was hesitant on pulling the plug on the $899 deal, had it in my cart several times and never got around to complete the transaction. Then saw them for $799 and decided to to buy them and match them with my Sony STR DH790 I bought 3 months prior. So I replaced my 6.1 Bose Accustimass with these Klipsch and boy I’m glad I did. These are amazing and go perfect with the Klipsch R-12 Subwoofer, that I got on sale for $149 at Costo as well. Loved it so much I ordered a 2nd subwoofer, cause today was the last day the are on sale. Glad I listened to you. Worth every penny.
How ironic! I just went with this same setup except I picked up the Yamaha TSR-700 (RX-V6A) from Costco as well for $399. Atmos and HDMI 2.1 pass through compatible, for a bit of future proofing. Awesome video!
@@Threedaysextension Yeah, that Yamaha is really nice! Depends on who you ask if it’s actually BETTER than the Sony, but if it’s on sale, get it! I’ve heard great things about the RX-V6A!
@@ealanosborne an interesting note about the Yamaha since I just picked one up last week at Costco. It's listed as a 7.1 receiver, buuuut has 2 subwoofer inputs on the back so then it would be 7.2 right? I was super stoked to see the dual sub plugs so I picked up two of the Klipsch R120 woofers for only 300 bucks total!!! Thanks to you I'm now confidentially upgrading my system piece by piece for the poor man's 7.2.2 Atmos setup!!
This video is one of my favorites that Ealan has done - I have linked it to many friends and clients because it's a very straight forward , removes the "investment" theory and shows detail of a simplified set-up. Thanks Ealan. ( The Sony STR DH790 is currently $460.00 )
I use the Sony STR-DH790 with Wharfedale front towers and 2 surround speakers plus a centre channel. I ended up buying 2 wharfedale subs and it works amazing. 2 subs make all the difference and have to hardly turn them up. THe DH790 is great
I did the same with a monoprice 5.1.2 set on sale at $170. Unfortunately couldn't find the STR-DH790 under $400 anywhere. I haven't felt any need for a second sub yet, but this video definitely made me think about it. It's insane how much bang for the buck I get out of this super budget price setup.
I now Have phenomenal sound thanks to you, I pretty much got every bit of discount that you talked about in the video, with speaker wires + tools everything included this cost me a little over $750 over the holidays, I have to say for the space I have, speakers completely fill the space up with sound, and it's so loud and powerful that I often wonder why my neighbors aren't complaining. A few things buyers should be aware of is that the sony str-dh790 can't be controlled via an app or anything, in fact it can't be connected to the internet for software updates etc, and a lot of configuration is buried deep inside the AMP menu on the receiver so it's a bit difficult to get to and configure properly, in hindsight I would have gone with a DN1080, which pretty much covers the gap, but I have figured out and learned a lot about this stuff that I don't need that upgrade anymore. Also, the Journey to Atmos Audio is not easy, it takes some time to understand what's going on. So be patient and stick to it.
That’s fantastic news!!! Congrats on your new LOUD home theater setup! 😄 But most importantly, thank you for your feedback on the Sony. I will definitely take that into account if I reference it in the future. 👍
I pieced together a 7.1.4 Atmos system for less than $1000 using used amps and cheaper in-walls, which do the job fine. It takes some time looking out for good deals from reputable sellers on eBay, but it can be done!
I've been slowly piecing together a true Dolby Atmos system to replace the soundbar I've been using. I got a set of Onkyo speakers from a thrift store that was intended to be a starter as one speaker was missing from the set. Last week though I came across the Klipsch Reference Theater pack from this video at a local place called Trade-It still factory sealed in the box for $200 and decided to go with these instead. Now I need to buckle down and find the bookshelf speakers for my front left and right channel and finally find a receiver (between Covid and bills getting a decent receiver has alluded me thus far).
Oof. Yeah, budget AVRs are hard to come by right now, with no light at the end of the tunnel that I can see. If you have a Costco membership (or a friend who does), they keep getting stocked with budget receivers for a short period of time, then they’re gone. Then they get them back in stock again, etc. Currently (just checked their website), the Yamaha TSR 700 is back again for only $439. 🤷♂️ Good for you, doing all that bargain hunting, though! 🤘 Keep at it!
This video helped me more than the 100s of other videos I had to watch to figure out an affordable 5.1.2 Dolby atmos setup. But I’m confused on one thing why did you buy an additional bookshelf speaker instead of a ceiling speaker? And which is the atmos ceiling speaker in this set up? That part confused me a bit hope I’ll get an answer soon.
Sweet! Glad I could help! And I chose to get an additional pair of bookshelf speakers for your front Left and Right speakers so that you have a slightly better pair for both your front soundstage while watching movies/TV, and when listening to music. Then just use 2 of the satellites from the 5.1 reference pack as your height speakers. Hope that makes more sense! 👍
I'm planning on getting the Klipsch 5.1 reference theater pack along with the Pioneer VSX 835 here before long. I was looking at the Logitech G906 surround sound, but wanted something a little better for my HTPC setup. This seems like the most cost effective solution. I'd love to go with a higher end setup, but I live in an apartment complex. The neighbors already complain a bit about my roommates stereo setup in his room lol.
Thanks for the video! It helped me immensely! Costco has the Klipsch theater system on sale now (January 2021) for $299; I went with the Sony STR-DN1080 receiver and I'm waiting for my cable and banana clip order to arrive from Amazon. I have two Bose 161 speakers I'm going to use for the height output. I purchased those several years ago at a thrift store; never used them but now I can. I'm looking forward to enjoying this system soon!
I actually recommend the DN-1080 anyway, if your budget allows it, so good for you! I hope you're blown away as much as I was by the Theater Pack's subwoofer. So exciting for you!
For a little over $1000, I have gotten a Pioneer Elite Receiver, 2 Andrew Jones floor standing speakers, 4 surround speakers and 1 central speaker + 1 Elite Subwoofer.
I just bought the Klipsch theater pack that comes with the R-625FA Dolby Atmos floor towers. I almost bought a set of KLH Kendall speakers but the Klipsch deal was too good to pass up and I will have a matching system for the first time ever. Right now I have Cerwin Vega fronts, Yamaha center, Klipsch rear, and 2 Klipsch subwoofers. The only downside is I have to go buy a new receiver now. I'm going to replace my Sony STR-DH550 with the STR-DH1080.
I paid $900 for the Klipsch theater pack and just one speaker in that pack the R-625FA retails for $689. I think if you bought the full set at retail it would cost around $1900.
@@KyleKick909 No joke, I’m making a “sequel” video on how to get a killer setup for $1,500, and it includes that Dolby Atmos 5.0.2 system from Costco! 😄It’s such a ridiculous deal!
@@ealanosborne Hey man, LOVE your videos. I just picked up the Klipsch reference pack at Costco for tree fiddy myself. Can't wait to set them up. I see you're recommending the Sony STR-DH790 7.2 receiver for them. Would the Sony STRDH590 5.2 receiver be good for them as well?
@@4midable4ce oh for sure. If you don’t care to go full Atmos and you just want a solid 5.2 system, that’s a good receiver too. The Denon s650H is good too, but more expensive. Pick your poison 😄
@@ealanosborne Ahh, I understand. Do you know if those bookshelf speakers you recommended are mountable, or will I need a different pair if I want to mount them on the wall or the ceiling?
So. I just did everything u said in this vid. Got my ref pack today. Tomorrow the sony and Wednesday the shelf klipsch. I hope it is an upgrade from my 5.1 setup, dennon 1513 with boston speakers. Im very excited to hook this all up. The 2 subs i have now a 12 inch acoustic with the new 8 inch klisch sub should be huge. I subscribed
Went klipsch for my speakers and will be getting a sony reciever this year. Klipsch have a high sensitivity rating and it means I don't need to drive my amp as hard
Precisely. I think that’s why they’re so popular when creating budget systems that don’t suck, since you don’t need a $2,000+ receiver to push great sound out of their loudspeakers. 👍
No, unfortunately. It processes that Zone 2 separately from the main zone. 7 channel AVRs used to have a full set of pre outs to be externally amped, but that was before Atmos became a thing. Dang.
You can get in even cheaper if you pair the DH-790 with some used speakers off craigslist or marketplace. You can get some really good deals if you're willing to do a bit of research. Wouldn't be unreasonable to get down below 500
Exactly. If that’s your style, go for it. Speakers are speakers. They just need a positive and negative signal to move. Nothing fancy about that. So used ones will most likely still be good, unless the previous owners blew them out. 👍
Just got the 5.1 Klipsch for $250, R41M for $85, and a Yamaha TSR-5810 for $200. With wire and stands it costs about $550! Couldn't be happier basically the same setup as this video
Bought a Klipsch reference package with a Klipsch 12 inch sub woofer out the door for $925.00 at Costco! Bought a Sony STR-1080 AVR at Best Buy for $550.00 then bought a Sony Blu-Ray at Wal-Mart for $225.00 then went back to Costco and purchased a 65" LG Oled TV for $2025.00 out the door . Total $2809.25 . Best investment I have made for an awesome Home Theater ! 4K UHD with Dolby Atmos never looked or sounded this good for that price !
Thank you so much for this video. Been going over how to affordably figure out a Atmos surround sound system and this perfectly solved my problem. Now to just wait on that receiver to go back down in price...
Thanks for the great idea! I'm thinking about buying two sets of the reference theater pack and using that extra subwoofer for a 7.2.2. Left over speakers would probably be sold or used elsewhere.
Sounds awesome! Do you already have a 9 channel receiver, since you’re going for 7.2.2? I wish I could have a more enveloping 7.1.2 setup, but it just doesn’t work in my living room since I have big ol’ windows on one side, so I settled for a 5.1.4 arrangement since I have a 9 channel Onkyo receiver. Lemme know what you end up doing! 🙌
The issue is the Sony reciever which doesnt have enough amplification for the klipsch set. With only 90 watts per channel into 6 ohms (20-20,000 Hz) at 0.09% THD, with 2 channels driven is not enought. Klipsch standing speaker requires 8 ohms. you'll need a 4 channel amp with RCA's and a 100w per channel reciever with pre outs.
Bought all these Thanks man. About to set up all these on Friday. Got rid of my nakamichi 9.2 after I saw this video. Used the money to buy everything lol. I replaced the Sony with the latest yamaha 8k 7.2 receiver since I got a ps5
Yeah I did it. Got everything set up. I can only run volume at 50% just how amazing and loud they sound. That sub is too much lol. I want a second one. Appreciate your video man. I sub for putting this up for us.
Just ordered that Sony receiver gonna pair it with the Jamo s 803 system + jamo atmos. Still undivided about the but is probably going to be the klipsch from cotsco when it goes down to $150
Great video and very informative. Is the Klipsch Reference Theater Pack 5.1 that you mention Dolby Atmos compatible? I don't see it referenced anywhere on the specs or manual. Another set of more expensive Klipsch speakers does mention Dolby Atmos. Am I missing something or does it even matter? Thanks!
Great question! It doesn't really matter which speakers you use, it matters how many. You need at least 7 speakers for a Dolby Atmos system. The Reference theater pack comes with 5 speakers and a sub, so that's not considered a Dolby Atmos-ready setup, numbers-wise. That's why in this video I suggest getting the R-41M bookshelf speakers ALSO, since that will give you a total of 7 speakers, which you can then use in a Dolby Atmos speaker configuration, as long as you get an AV receiver that can decode Dolby Atmos.
Awesome content!! I’m literally liking all your vids.. I was wondering if I understood you correctly.. With Sony receiver str-dh770 I’m able to run all the speakers you mentioned on the video and add a second sub?? Essentially running “5.2.2” ???
Sony started supporting Dolby Atmos configurations and processing with the DH790. So unfortunately you would only get up to a 7.2 configuration with the DH770. The DH790 can process a 5.2.2 configuration. Make sense?
Could you make a 5.1.4 by going with 2 sets of the R-41M for the L/R front and rears, keeping the center, using the 4 satellites as the overheads, and the Denon AVR-X3700H 9.2-receiver? I feel the Denon is more future-proof and I could upgrade the speakers down the road.
Yeah, that math adds up! Speakers are speakers, so you can configure them however. Starting small and upgrading as you go is the best way! And having the X3700H is a great base to start from! 👍

Yeah, that might work! Subwoofer placement is the most creative part about setting up a home theater. Angling a subwoofer differently, different placements, etc. Its the most experimental part, too. So I’m not at all opposed to diagonal corners. That could be the best configuration for your space. 👍
I just bought those speakers from Costco today. Along with it I bought the Yamaha TSR-700 receiver. Any thoughts on that receiver? I just want to make sure it’s all going to handle well.
Just got a 3.1.2 vizio bar for a smaller room, after tax it was $650. Honestly I’d rather have the traditional speaker/ receiver setup. The sound from the bar is great but lacking in fidelity and bass, and directionality. Great vid man, you deserve way more subs.
“Just got,” as in you can still return it? 😄 Just kidding. Yeah, that’s why I wanted to make this vid, since I’m a diehard traditional speaker/receiver setup kind of person. Soundbars have come a long way, though, for sure. Hope you can get the setup you deserve real soon! And thanks for the compliment! Tell your friends to subscribe! 😄🙌
Ok, I ended up seeing the receiver for 286.99, at Best Buy as a returned item, hopefully it’s a good one, got the matching Sony “core” series floor stands, center, bookshelf for rear, and their “atmos enabled” height channels, all for 1/2 price @$550 (the Klipsch are probably better but I’m not a Costco member) Definitely think I’ll have a better experience than the sound bar though lol 😁
Once possible I will to have to cross the border and get these speakers...here in Canada the Klipsch 5.1 speakers are 900$! I already have the Sony receiver
Got new open box on ebay for 396 cad all in! Found a new reciever on fb marketplace for 402 all in too. Extra speakers were 163 too. Amazon speaker wire for 109!
Hey Ealan, did you ever review the Klipsch Reference Cinema? I enjoyed your unboxing video of it. I've got the Sony DH790 and just picked up the Reference Cinema version of the HTIB speakers from Klipsch. I got it open box for $250. I think it was a good deal but hoping I didn't make a mistake. It should get here next week. Considering I'm coming from a 5.1 system that consists of Dayton b652 airs and a monoprice 8-in sub, I think it'll be a decent upgrade. And it doesn't break the bank.
@ealanosborne I just ran across this video and your page. I’ve gotta say, I’m a new fan and subscriber! That being said, I was pretty excited to see this video as it was just what I was looking for. The. I realized as with everything else these days, the prices have risen significantly…. 🤦🏻♂️. Also, do you have an updated video similar to this one with newer equipment since this is 2 years old?
It seems like the items in the video are mostly still budget friendly? The Sony STR-DH790 is still consistently one of the cheapest 7 channel AVRs on the market (Amazon - $389). The Klipsch Reference 5.1 system can be found on Amazon for $265. And a pair of Klipsch R-41m bookshelf speakers are currently $129 also on Amazon. Unless…you’re not in the U.S.? I know international prices are higher… 😬
@@ealanosborne OK thank you, I wasn’t checking Amazon for the prices so that may have been part of the issue. Is Amazon a trustworthy place to order these items? Are there authorized sellers in case I run into issues and need to use the factory warranty? Thanks for the info!
@@troyd.521 There's always a risk involved when ordering through Amazon, but the only time I've run into any issues with audio or video related items is when I got a 4K Blu-ray disc that was all scratched up. But everything else I've had a great experience, pretty much.
Hello Ealan, excellent video. I know very little about the subject, however I would like to have a 5.1.2 home theater, with dolby atmos, but I only have a budget of 1200 dollars, what speakers do you recommend?
I am a first time buyer of home theater system...i just came across platin 5.1 for $689. Is it worth to go ahead a buy it without any real research..for being a first timer?
That system is excellent for what it provides. But the thing about systems like that, is that there isn’t much room for expansion. If you’re wanting to dive into home theater now with the intent of getting better equipment and better speakers down the road, I would invest in a receiver and wired speakers up front. Otherwise, if you get the Platin system and are completely satisfied, then that’s great too! Whatever floats your boat. 😀
Definitely keeping my eyes out for Klipsch when we eventually get to our next house. I currently have STR-DH740 that I have hooked up to my computer with two shelf speakers.
Firstly an awesome video, killer start and ah yes...... the setup. So bought the Denon 750 at 319, theatre pack at 329 and the r41m for 140. Hooked up everything except the 2 spare speakers from the theater pack. I can't get the feel. Especially the center channel is overshadowed by r41m. Any suggestion dolbydoc?
Haha, thanks for the compliments! And yeah...getting that balance is an art form, since room space, furniture and ceilings are all different for everyone. For starters, make sure that sub is set to 120 Hz crossover, so makes up for what the little Theater Pack speakers can’t do. I’m not positive, since I don’t own the s750h, but I’m pretty sure you can also set the crossover frequencies for each individual speaker. So even though the r-41m’s frequency response can go lower than 110Hz, set the crossover to 120Hz so they match what the Theater Pack satellites can output. And also, it’ll take a couple weeks to “break in” the speakers in any given space. I wasn’t all too impressed either when first hooked up. Then down the road, it just dawned on me, “Hey...these sound better.” 😄 In the end, these are still budget speakers. So they’re not the best of the best. But I still think they’re the best for the price, compared to other systems in its class. 👍
If you have a Costco membership (or know someone who does) the Denon s760h is great. Or if Costco is a no-go, the slightly older Denon s750h is still perfectly fine.
At what position to you personally recommend mounting the height channels, if using the Klipsch satellite speakers? Should I put them up front near/on the ceiling or should I move them back, overhead and a few feet in front of the couch position? It would seem to me that if you put them up by the TV on the ceiling the Atmos effect would be less pronounced than if it were closer to the listener and more above their head. Both positions are possible for me, but I am undecided which would be best.
Great question! Well, mounting them above the TV near the ceiling gives you the “Wall of Sound,” which does this really cool effect that makes your TV seem gigantic. But yes, for a more significant spatial effect, mounting them on the ceiling is best, pointed down towards your couch. 👍
Great! Thanks for the reply! I am actually using a projector screen instead of a TV and the screen hangs from the ceiling about 2.5 feet from the wall (there's a basement window on the wall). If I were to put the height speakers in the upper corner this would be behind the screen. I do not have an acoustically transparent screen so it may slightly reflect the sound back onto the wall. Unfortunately my front L/R channels will be slightly behind the screen on bookshelves. While the speakers are physically positioned slightly to the right and left of the screen back there, they are pointed at the couch directly in front of the screen so there may also be a slight sound deflection. I'll have to see how it goes. Do you think if I mounted the height channels back there it would be an issue? I'm digging that Wall of Sound concept! The center channel will be under the screen so that's no issue. I just ordered my gear and it's on the way. I just have a soundbar for the time being so I'm pretty excited about the upgrade!
@@PhoggHawk Oh I see, now that you've described your setup. But yes, it would cause some issues if the height channels were behind a non-acoustically transparent projector screen, given that most of what comes out of the height channels are mid to high frequencies, which are very directional, meaning they need to be pointed right at the listening position to be heard the best. Subwoofers can go anywhere, since they are both heard AND felt
Oh sure! Speakers are speakers, so they all connect with speaker wire. :) Of course timbre-matching speakers by getting all the same brand is best, but to start out, you can absolutely go with speakers you already have on hand. 👍
Absolutely! You can use the two extra speakers for front Left and Right and mount two of the speakers from the reference pack up high for Atmos effects. 🤘
In my country (Czechia) this whole setup costs like 1700$ lol. Also heard some negative reviews on that Sony receiver like hissing from speakers from time to time. So maybe if possible and budget allows I would go with different brand than Sony.
@ealanosborne, just wanted to follow up, turns out two of the klipsch satellites from the reference kit I bought were damaged so I’m dealing with mercari to get a partial refund, but I bought two Sony Atmos ready speakers, hooked those bad boys up and now I’ve got sweet Atmos and dtsx running smoothly and I’m loving it! Thanks for your help, you’ve definitely got a longtime subscriber here!

And I am looking at Klipsch R-41M which led me to you video. All will be under $180 by the time I get my bookshelf speakers. The extra money will be allocated for Technics Graphic Equalizer.
Hmmm...well if you mean just a 5.1 setup, Denon s650H is good as well as Sony’s 5.2 version of the receiver I mention in this video. The Klipsch Reference theater pack would be good in a bedroom, too, since I think it’s the best 5.1 speaker system all in one box for a great price. Even though the Yamaha TSR-700 has a total of 9 speaker terminals on the back, the software inside can only handle 7 channels at once. So you have to choose between using “surround back,” or “front height presence” channels. You can’t have both. Just a limitation of software. But it is a fantastic receiver, especially because it’s future proof, 8K, etc. But the speakers setups you can do with it are only 7.2 or 5.2.2.
Hey Ealan, between the Denon AVR-S750H or the Sony DN1080, which one would you recommend? Also, regarding speakers and their sound quality to go with the Sony DN1080, would you recommend the Klipsch Reference Theater Pack with the R-41M Bookshelf Speakers, or the Sony Complete Speaker System (with SSCS3, SSCS5, SSCS8, SACS9, and SS-CSE speakers)? Thank you!!
Sony tends to be a more musical receiver than the Denon typically, so if you want the versatility of good home theater and music listening experience, go with Sony. And that Sony complete speaker system is def more expensive than the Klipsch Theater Pack, but it gives you those Atmos upward-firing speakers. So if you can afford it, go for it! 👍 The Denon is still a great receiver tho.
@@ealanosborne Thank you again for replying! It seems that all the Sony System Speakers are on sale in Bestbuy for a total of $550 for all those speakers (Two SSCS3, SSCS5, SSCS8, SACS9, and SS-CSE). Since the Klipsch system is back to full price in Costco, it would actually cost me more than the complete Sony system! However, if the sound quality of those Klipsch are better than the Sony System, I'd go for it.. although it seems that the Sony would sound better since the speakers are bigger lol
Have you heard of or experienced the dn-1080 issue where the speakers pop/snap when pausing Atmos or DD+ content? It basically sounds like the snap when you touch a doorknob while statically charged, only amplified through your right channel speakers. I have this exact setup, Klipsch TRP and have tried two separate Dn-1080 units and BOTH have this issue. Google shows that I am not the only person that has experienced this and Sony pretends they don't know what's going on. Typically if you take it to the top level of customer service they just buy the unit back, there is no fix. The problem is that I love the way this unit sounds! I tried a Denon X1600h I between my two Sony units and it didn't compare. I am considering downgrading to the dn-790 and hoping it sounds as good. What do you recommend? The other problem is that no retailers have AvRs in stock right now, thanks covid. Help!
Yeah, that Sony STR-DH790 is basically the same as the DN1080, but just less bells and whistles. But sound quality basically the same. 90W of power per channel rather than 100W with the DN1080, so not much difference. That's why I usually recommend it, since it seems to be the most bang for your buck. Oh, and no, I haven’t heard of this issue with the DN1080, so thanks for the heads up!
Ealan your video gave a good idea As you said denon sr 760 is better I placed order How ever I don’t see sourround height Option unlike the Sony mentioned 5.1.2 and sourround height option for audio cable from celining mount kilpch speakers
Typically the software in any receiver will allow you choose where exactly the 2 height channels will be located. That could be height front, height directly above you, or height surround. So you have options.
The Video that started it all!! lol once I Saw his others, 1500, 3000.00 etc... I was of and building, well ordering, I didn't build anything, I purchased and assembled parts, But now I have a cool home theater instead of an expensive sound bar that doesn't work.
Very helpful thanks I’ve never had a surround system and some are so bloody expensive I kept away from it but something like this could b the way I go thanks for the vid
I have a very old Kenwood Vr616 5.1 set up with kenwood KS506HT speakers, would I be able to use these speakers and sub with a Sony STR-DH790, buy the Klipsch Black Reference Theater Pack 5.1 Surround Sound System to make a 5.2.2 ( or would i need a 7.2 channel system for this) set up by mixing and matching using some of my older speakers and old sub? Sorry for asking new to all this. Thank you for the video and answering questions still
Oh for sure! As long as your old Kenwood speakers are good ol’ fashioned speakers that connect to (-) and (+) speaker wires, then you can mix and match all you want! Of course, it’s always good to eventually get all the same brand for timbre matching, but I get it - it’s not cheap, so there’s no shame with mixing and matching at the start! 👍 And the Sony STR-DH790 can do both 5.2.2 or 7.2, so whatever floats your boat. 🚤😁
@@ealanosborne thank you very much for the reply I appreciate it, you just earned another sub. Looks like I'll be going that route. One more question are banana plus worth it or is just going by speaker wire fine? Thanks again, you are amazing for still answering questions
@@ThatCarGuy Thanks for the kind words!! 😁 And yeah, banana plugs are so worth it, at least when plugging into the receiver, since you have all those speaker terminals so close together. Plugging into the speakers themselves, though, not as crucial, since you typically have plenty of room to maneuver a wire into the terminals. 👍
The Denon S750H is another good receiver for this same setup. More expensive, tho. My experience with budget-range Atmos soundbars is that they’re just okay. More of a gimmick. You’ll be spending more like $800-$1000+ to get good quality internal components to do a good job at creating 3D surround like Atmos (like the Sonos Arc). I’m literally editing a 2021 soundbar buying guide video which will be dropping in a day or two! Be on the lookout! 😀👍
@@ealanosborne cool thanks for responding I have the ONKYO TxNR626 do you think it’s ok receiver it’s 7.2 If it doesn’t say Dolby Atmos it won’t support just wondering.
Wish I was close to a Costco or had a membership...lol How do you think these Klipsch speakers would compare to 4x Polk T15 speakers, a T30 center, and a sub... starting with just a 5.1 setup. Also, how do you think 5.1.2 enhances the movie experience over 7.1 or 5.1? I am seeing a lot of content still jist in 5.1, some 7.1, but only a little in Atmos or the other one. Thinking this upgrade step I will get a new reciever, as my old Sony is dying... and keep to a 5.1 setup for now... but I may spring for a more future proof Denon AVR like the X2600H or S960H instead on one that limits things to 5.1. Thanks for the videos.
Yeah, those Polk speakers are in the same wheelhouse for sure, so if you found a great deal on a 5.1 set, that’d be a good purchase as well. And boy howdy, a 5.1.2 setup enhances the experience by adding a third dimension! 😁 5.1 and 7.1 are great, since you’re enveloped by sound at ear-level. But a movie encoded in Atmos doesn’t just add sound from above...by adding that third dimension, audio engineers can now place sounds anywhere in 3D space, like way above you, or slightly above and to the left, etc. It’s one of those things where you don’t know what you’re missing until you hear it for yourself. 😀 And yeah, those Denon receivers are DOPE! Getting anything future proof is always a good bet nowadays, with the option to add more speakers down the road. 👍 Thanks for watching!!!
@@ealanosborne , going to focus on the best AVR I can get first of all then, and suffer with the current speakers for while longer, so each piece can be upgraded with the least amount of compromise... thinking in my space 5.1.2 would be doable... The space is about 19x11 with the TV and main seating along opposite 11ft walls... rearanging this isn't really an option, and no space behind the seating as it's an exterior wall. Amy advice on how you'd arrange a 5.1.2 , 5.1.4 , or 7.1.2 system in a space that small?
hello could you help me with this question, I bought the Klipsch R-41M 50W(pair) and the center R-52C 100W, and I have for the surround the pack 5.1 reference. I wanted to buy a YAMAHA tsr-700 receiver but its output is 100w per channel, I have read on the internet that it is better that the receiver has more power than the speakers, but the center R-52C needs 100w, it is not bad that the receiver only has 100w or there will be no problem?
You’ll be just fine, actually. It’s rated to be 100 watts when 2 channels are driven at once. But in a home theater setting, with all 7 channels playing simultaneously, it’s more like 60 watts per channel? That TSR-700 will work great with those speakers. 👍 The 100w rating just means it can handle 100w continuously, which is nice, since that means it won’t come close to blowing out those speakers, especially since the R-52c can handle a spike of up to 400w and still be okay. Lastly, it’s good to know that the R-52c can be used with any upgrades you make in the future, like maybe if you want to power your front 3 speakers with an external amp. That R-52c will still be able to handle that power, too.
Yes and no. It’s only a 7 channel AVR, so 2 of the upward-firing Atmos speakers wouldn’t be utilized, but the main ear-level speakers are still great for the price! My official review comes out later this week!
@@ealanosborne thanks for you input. I really appreciate it. I'm going to have to go with the klipsch reference theater set. The 9.1 AV's are out of my budget. Keep up the great work on this channel !!!
How is your center speaker holding up against R-41M? I'm thinking about doing the exact same thing but I've heard that the home theater system set was lacking in mid range. I was wondering if adding the R-41M helped or it overpowered the center speaker now. Also, my setup is for a small living room. Thanks for your help in advance!
I actually don’t personally have this setup. I was merely giving an example of how to make a complete Dolby Atmos setup from scratch. BUT...it is a great question. Since the R-41M speakers’ frequency response goes down to 68Hz, it can reproduce much better in the midrange. But the Sony receiver does allow you to set the crossover frequency for each speaker. So even tho the R-41M can handle down to 68Hz, if you’re concerned about them overpowering the center speaker, set the crossover frequency to 110 Hz, to give all the speakers a more balanced output. The subwoofer can then handle all the frequencies below 110Hz. 👍 Just an idea. Or just experiment with which crossover frequency makes the system sound the best. Your home theater should sound however you like it best. 🙌
As of 11/26/2020, the Sony Receiver is $299 At Best Buy, the Klipsch Reference Theater Pack 5.1 is $330 at Costco and the Klipsch Bookshelf Speakers are $90 at Costco. Thanks for this video :) which is a total of $719.
@@ealanosborne I ran into your video after seeing the Klipsch speaker set at Costco. Needed receiver now and yet again ran into your video. Now looking for some front speaker stands. I loved this video so much that I went ahead and picked it all up. Wired everything and it sounded great until I turned up the volume. When I got to about 20 the receiver shuts off flashing protection. Any advice?
Whoa...that’s definitely not supposed to happen. I haven’t seen that error. Hopefully it’s not a lemon receiver. I’d check all your connections one more time, just in case. Otherwise, maybe it needs to be replaced, unfortunately. You should be able to turn up this system pretty loud without any issues. Sorry this happened...
@@ealanosborne I’ll give that a shot. I’ve been reading that the impedance of the speakers/speaker wire needs to be within the threshold of the receiver. I’m going to try smaller gauge wire and a different surge protector. I’ll keep everyone posted on the results.
Can the height speakers go on the walls to the side instead of the tv wall? The Dolby guide shows them being placed on the side so I’m confused where to place them now. I am thinking to the side will be good with this setup since the center, and bookshelf speakers will be near the tv.
Sure! Every living room/home theater space is different, so however you can pull it off is fine. As long as those height speakers are pointed in your general direction, you’re good, whether they’re above the TV, straight above your head or to the sides up high. 👍
Hi Ealan Osborne, would this Klispch Reference series 5.1.4 sound better than Klipsch R625FA setup that you advised on $1500 system if both speakers system run with Onkyo TX-NR7100? I am thinking by adding another pair of R-41 to make it 9.2. What would you suggest? I already have 2 front floor Paradigm and a center channel (20 years old) Great and awesome channel, liked and subscribed! Thank you
I'd say the R-625FA setup would still be better in the long run, since you're dealing with towers that have some more power behind them. But if possible, I might stick with Paradigm for better timbre-matching, if you want to get a pair of bookshelves to get to a 9.2 system, like a pair of Monitor SE Atoms.
@@ealanosborne i think i like Onkyo 7100, it got wifi and Dirac, i think i will get it and a pair of Klipsch R41 and Klipsch sub R12sw and call the day.
Hello Ealan. First of all, excelent video. I was wondering if there was an alternative option for the recieve that can handle a phono entry. I am trying to be as efficiently as possible trying to build my whole audio system for music and cinema. I've been collecting various LPs and can't wait to blast them. Any advice (from anyone, really) will be much appreciated.
True! Although one thing to remember, the longer you need to make your speaker wire runs, the thicker (lower) the gauge needs to be. Since I run my wires through my attic, some runs are 50+ feet, so I used 14 gauge, since it’s the thickest the Theater Pack speakers can handle. If your speaker runs only need anything up to 50 feet? 16 gauge should be fine. 👍
Awesome video, loved it. I'm from India. Many home theatre lovers are annoyed here, as we cannot buy many of those products locally in our Nation. We don't have shield tv pro, Good cost effective Sony receivers and much more. Will figure a way to import or arrange with a friend who might be travelling. Thanks again for the video.
Hey Ealan. While I'm waiting for my Theater Pack, does the Subwoofer have the option to plug wire and if I can would I have to buy the connection seperately just incase? I don't mind Wires myself and I don't always count on bluetooth. hope to get an answer.
Yeah! That’s how I have it setup for myself. I don’t mind wires either, so I got myself a nice shielded subwoofer RCA cable going from my receiver to the sub. Occasionally I play around with the wireless transmitter, but I do enjoy having the option to go wireless or wired. 🙌

Oh man, what a great find! Good job! 🤘
Hi, would you recommend this receiver..I am interested in sound quality and power??
@@abdullah84 both struggling huh 😣
So do you still have any buzzing and if not, how did u fix it ?

Then saw them for $799 and decided to to buy them and match them with my Sony STR DH790 I bought 3 months prior.
So I replaced my 6.1 Bose Accustimass with these Klipsch and boy I’m glad I did.
These are amazing and go perfect with the Klipsch R-12 Subwoofer, that I got on sale for $149 at Costo as well.

@@ealanosborne an interesting note about the Yamaha since I just picked one up last week at Costco. Are you looping the subs?
@@iSleepDoc I don't know what that means. I have both hooked up now, but the software setup only configures 1. The power is going to both though.

True! If you’re price watching like a hawk, it can be done! Great job! And thanks for watching!
Thats how you do it
I've been slowly piecing together a true Dolby Atmos system to replace the soundbar I've been using.
Good for you, doing all that bargain hunting, though!
I agree with your decision making. 😎🙌
Hey Rich, how did your theater system sound?

Make sense?
I recommend watching Transformers Age Of Extinction at 2:22:00 on this set. It blew my mind.
Great video thanks for the idea. Although I think the center channel will be lacking with the bookshelfs.
Had to throw a like just for the integrated and utilised bloopers. Keep it up, love your content, sir.

what I want to ask you: does this system also work on PC? so I can play dolby atmos for games?
If your PC can pass Dolby Atmos audio via HDMI through its sound card, then yes. That’s how it would need to connect to the AV receiver.
Definitely keeping my eyes out for Klipsch when we eventually get to our next house.
I currently have STR-DH740 that I have hooked up to my computer with two shelf speakers.
Can you use the app iOS to control the receiver? Thanks
@@viperal5832 Don't know. I have android and windows PC
The sony str-dn1080 receiver was discontinued can you suggest a replacement?
@@ealanosborne looks like the best option for me would be to hang overhead and point at the couch then. Thanks for the input!

However, if the sound quality of those Klipsch are better than the Sony System, I'd go for it.. although it seems that the Sony would sound better since the speakers are bigger lol
How would you describe the difference between this setup and the Vizio M-Series 5.1.2 setup?

How do you think these Klipsch speakers would compare to 4x Polk T15 speakers, a T30 center, and a sub... starting with just a 5.1 setup.
And yeah, those Denon receivers are DOPE! Getting anything future proof is always a good bet nowadays, with the option to add more speakers down the road. 👍 Thanks for watching!!!

hello could you help me with this question, I bought the Klipsch R-41M 50W(pair) and the center R-52C 100W, and I have for the surround the pack 5.1 reference.
The 100w rating just means it can handle 100w continuously, which is nice, since that means it won’t come close to blowing out those speakers, especially since the R-52c can handle a spike of up to 400w and still be okay.
Lastly, it’s good to know that the R-52c can be used with any upgrades you make in the future, like maybe if you want to power your front 3 speakers with an external amp. That R-52c will still be able to handle that power, too.
@@ealanosborne thanks you 🙌🏽
Thanks for the video! My question is with AV work with the new Klipsch cinema set at Costco you preview last week?

@@ealanosborne Thanks! I appreciate your quick response too. Subscribed btw! :)
@@henryc7598 woohoo! Thanks so much for the sub! You rock!
Woohoo! Glad I could help! That’s why I wanted to make sure this video was posted way in advance of holiday shopping deals. 🙌
@@ealanosborne I ran into your video after seeing the Klipsch speaker set at Costco. Needed receiver now and yet again ran into your video. Now looking for some front speaker stands. Will try to mount the rear facing speakers from ceiling but still working out positions. The beginning of your video is legit what I looked like when first looking for home theater systems.
Whoops I should have clicked my settings to show newest first. Good looking out.
@@ealanosborne Who is Techno Dad? Sorry I didn't see a link to his Channel on how to setup the receiver. I did find a youtuber that goes by that channel name that does audio device reviews but Couldn't find this receiver. :(
@@prostovanka Whoa, I thought I put the link in my description, sorry! The link is there now, but here it is anyway!

I'm getting tower klispch speakers. Would it be OK if I get a 7.2. Channel like Yamaha RX-V6A. Will that be powerful enough for my klispch speakers?

Thank you! Welcome to the madness! 😄
I already have 2 front floor Paradigm and a center channel (20 years old)
Great and awesome channel, liked and subscribed!
Thank you
I'd say the R-625FA setup would still be better in the long run, since you're dealing with towers that have some more power behind them.
@@MrMtr999 I like that plan!
I've got this amp with some big floor standers and large.bookshleves on stands sounds really.good for the price it cost
Denon and Yamaha receivers usually have phono inputs, like the Denon S750h and Yamaha Rx-v6a 👍
@@ealanosborne thanks for the fast reply! Will look into them.
16 gauge wire works great too.
Thank you for your kind words! I’ve heard from other from India that are in your same position. It’s not fair! 🙁
@@ealanosborne cool thanks Ealan!!! I'm gona go look for a shielded Subwoofer RCA cable. You're awesome dude. keep up with the videos.
Btw, I think you're Costco or Klipsch's best advertiser lol. They should pay you since it seems like alot of comments of ppl that have just purchased these cause of your videos.
I think you have single handedly sold a lot of klipsch theater packs. They need to send you a check. 👍
Damn straight! 😄 At least send me something to review or sponsor my next Klipsch-themed video! 🙌 One of these days...
