Thanks for watching! Since you asked, I've actually got my dates set: November 16th, 2018: Harry Potter on Game Boy Advance (Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets on GBA) June 4th, 2019: Harry Potter on Game Boy Advance: Prisoner of Azkaban Gotta keep in line with those 15-year movie anniversaries and Fantastic Beasts release dates.
Max Marriner dude where the heck is Harry Potter on game boy advance you said it would be on November 16 2018 but now it’s December 15 2018 where is it?
This is one of life's greatest tragedies tbh Part of the reason I got into game development was because I wanted there to be another game like that... I even have the cards/combos system in my game ;)
My hope is that as this type of game becomes easier to code with advances in technology that we may actually see some of the later game as fan creations using the original style and look, and hopefully physical cartridges too. =)
I just wish companies would still put out games for old consoles, It doesn't give the same feeling if they're just gonna change how a game looks with every system. Doesn't make any sense to me
Not a classic? Everything else about the analysis was spot on but the conclusion fell at that line. I did play the game as a kid and it was by far one of my favorites. Glad to see someone went back and looked it up. Great review overall!
Did you know that the composer for the console-versions of Chamber of Secret (And Sorcerer's Stone) was Jeremy Soul? Gotta say though, impressed by both how well some tracks where transferred to the GBC from the console-versions AND how great the original ones are :)
I actually had a whole bit devoted to mentioning him that I ultimately cut. His music is incredible and his work on Chamber of Secrets earned him a BAFTA, which was well-deserved.
I always felt like Harry Potter and the GBC were touchstones for gen Y. I was too old for them but they seem to have a lot of weight for people who are now 30-35. The game looks pretty good though!
Great reviews ( game 1 and 2). I played game 1 (SS) on GBC when I was 8 or 9 years old when I had a lot of time to kill so I guess it didn't test my patience too much. I remember being able to breeze through it when I discovered a bug which let me essentially gather infinite ingredients for creating healling points. 1. Stand in front of a bush at the Hogwarts grounds which contains the essential ingredient 2. Collect the item 3. Open the start menu. Then close it and return to the game. 4. Inspect the bush again and you'll find it has another of the same ingredient you just collected. Opening the start menu resets it every time. instant hack to brew how many ever potions you need of anything!
I remember playing this game as kid! I had both the Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets for GBC, and Azakaban for GBA. (Looking forward to your review of that, too). Chamber was my favorite of the three, and the only one I actually took the time to complete. I totally agree about the music, this game had some really nice background songs. I like your Harry Potter reviews, and your videos are well made. keep up the good work!
3:07 "You should know better!" is called "Good Studying Habits" in the third RPG game, but both effectively increase the experience gained from battles.
The money situation plays a role in New Game Plus, where you keep all of your progress but replay the story. You still have more damage output and defense to strive for.
Thank you very much for your thoroughly entertaining and insightful Harry Potter game reviews! It is extremely difficult to find quality coverage on these game and I sincerely hope that you continue to review every Harry Potter game based on the first three stories...... I don't really give a crap whether or not you decide to cover any of the post "Prisoner of Azkaban" games.
In Sorcerer's Stone there were a couple tricks... Well Four. 1. Once you get Mucus Ad Nauseum and Locomotor Wibbly, any boss is a joke. Paralyze them, poison, then just try to flee while they are paralyzed to skip turns or paralyze them once that wears off, since the poison stays and hits. HARD. 2. When Hagrid asks you to get chickens, don't return to him once you caught enough. Just keep killing them (specially with Flipendo Trio if you got it) and you'll be getting levels every 1 to 6 battles depending on your level. Since Level Up refills SP and MP... 3. Found myself farming up items at the hallway for the Astrology Tower A LOT after the above. Enemies were just annoying at worst, and at best I'd be getting two pair of robes or gloves, which I could sell for a premium.
The game was a bit to easy. All you needed to do was upgrade your spells by training in the hospital wing for half an hour. And you could take on anyone.
man this is a great video. I've played the two first games for GBA, and i thought that the RPG from the 3rd movie literally came from scratch, but now i know they where 2 RPG prequels for the GBC. Thank you for such gaming history!
I should point out, the composer for the first 4 books' games, for the main version, was Jeremy Soule, who is most known for being the composer behind the Elder Scrolls series. So... Having his Harry Potter soundtrack bitcrushed, for a turn-based RPG, that will forever be amazing to say the least. God I loved these games as a kid... But, just wait till you see the main 3 games on the current gen(at the time) consoles, they're SUPER blatant Zelda ripoffs, but I don't think that's a bad thing myself.
Yeah when I was a little kid I had a problem with trying to defeat Aragog because my small child brain back then didn't know that I can level up, revive, and heal! 😑 Now when I got older, and more wiser in playing video games, I finally managed to beat the game less than 24 hours and was able to play it again on the same save slot to get the other card deck so I will end up becoming a God every time I want to play the same save slot over and over again.
I remember my older sister’s friend buying me this game for my 8th birthday. I had a crush on her and I was a huge HP fan so This game is very special to me. I need to buy it and play it again
Money was easy to get. There is a Bush under the quidditch arena if you search it it would have a silver horn of a unicorn. They sell for a good bit. Also easy to farm seeing as you opens menu press b to leave press a to pick up and repeat. Some how the menu respawned the item
I feel like the whole book series should have been handheld rpgs like the first 3. Goblet of Fire and Deathly Hallows would have been the bomb with these mechanics.
YEAH! i was waiting for this review for so long! After seeing your review of the first game i was...concerned. i thought you wouldn't like this game. This particular game dominated my childhood and made me the happiest little young gamer ever. I have never played the first one, so i feared you would blame this game on the faults of the first one. I am delighted to see such a postive, yet honest and grounded review. The hype for this review was worth it!
How can we imagine nowadays than a videogame would be based on the book and not on the film. That is what makes games based on film most of the time simple, boring and so comercial, but surpricely those Game Boy versions that would supose to be the worst, were for far the best in my point of view. Sadely only came out two of then, although the third part in Game Boy Advance was prety good too. Thank you for this review, i though that only me remenber how especial were those two games and I have very good childhood memories of them. Greetings from Madrid, Spain.
Check out my parody hack of the game, Hairy Fucker and the Chamber of Semen! It should be available on baddesthacks website. But this game has so much in it along with an amazing soundtrack from Magicaltimebean. Although Hogwarts Floor 4-7 can hurt my ears sometimes :P I never noticed that the battles go by faster in the sequel. I don't agree with what you said about money. You almost never NEED money besides maybe with the last boss and aragog. I didn't like the Sorcerer's Stone soundtrack in some ways, but I thought there were a few tracks that were even better than Chamber of Secrets, like the last boss theme or the forbidden forest theme. Prisoner of Azkaban GBA is like a lamer version of this game. Still some good music in it, though.
I cant believe I never played any of these games as a kid! I loved Harry Potter, loved RPGs, and I owned and loved my GBC and GBA. These games should have been a no-brainer, I dunno how I missed them! Anyways, pls make the Prisoner of Azkaban review soon!
im at the point in the game right before you sneak out to Hagrids and yes the money is out of control pretty much no grind that I have found yields enough.. maybe the dueling club but generally I have to go heal afterwards. Some of the equipment I can buy now is absurdly high priced not even worth buying they dont even buy your old items for that much
I have this game, and I really don't play it anymore. What I found to be the most frustrating thing about this game was the battling. In my experience, the battles felt like you were depending on luck rather than skill. How do you even beat the bosses like that? I remember trying to defeat Aragon many, many times before beating him.
I had an entire joke about Aragog being cheap that I ultimately cut from the video. The bosses are a big reason why the game is just "pretty good" instead of "damn awesome."
@@MaxMarriner I don't Aragon even GAVE you a change to fight. Immediately when you start the boss, Aragog, starts vomiting webs at you, and that stuns you for quite a while, making you vulnerable. And it seemed like Aragon wasn't vulnerable to any spell you thew at him! I also review _Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone_ for the PC here: www.potterforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=60697&p=2050636 I'll also review _Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets_ for the PC, too.
I really liked this game as a kid, finished it several times and tried a couple different playthroughs. The things is, I had no one to swap trading cards so I could never have all the collection or use that one combo that requires a card from the other deck :/
There are two 'books' with cards you can fill. Both are identical but missing a few cards from eachother. So what you do is: You do one playthrough with book 1 and the other with book 2, getting all the cards in the end.
Ultra late to the video, my apologies My biggest gripe with the first and second handheld games is the simple fact that equipment does not cross over with NG+ Why yes i LOVE the idea of gaining a super powerful item in the LAST DUNGEON, Scorcerer's Stone!!! Why yes i LOVE having to repurchase my items once again, CoS!!! I sorta get why for the first one with the school supplies run but the second has zero excuse Thankfully, the third game fixes this problem
When I played this game I was on my Pokemon phase. Loved it and I wished I could afford the 1st. Why the 3rd one was completely different ? I got used to imagine Hogwarts like in the GBC version.
I don't understand why they put just to Harry Potter fighting in the map ooh I can see Ron and Hermione too. I prefer the other version wich is not rpg but I played azkaban rpg and I liked it.
Solid video! Can't wait for the sequel review --- any timeframe in mind?
Thanks for watching! Since you asked, I've actually got my dates set:

Haha, you're keeping me to my word! The video is slated for release later this month.
If only the third game was on GBC instead of GBA...
I want GBC RPGs for each Harry Potter book.
This is one of life's greatest tragedies tbh

From what I've heard from bare metal programmers for old consoles, programming a game becomes easy once you get used to it.
So glad you mentioned the music. Some hot bangers right there man.
Harry Potter has such a rich world, it would be so cool to see a modern mobile rpg that DOES NOT have lootboxes or a pay-to-win model
I just wish companies would still put out games for old consoles, It doesn't give the same feeling if they're just gonna change how a game looks with every system. Doesn't make any sense to me
6:23 why is he dabbing
I'm glad you reviewed this, people need to know how good this was
Never got passed Aragog aswell when I was a kid, I grinded until level 80 and still could not get passed it back then.
Aragog is hard. I never got past the Basilisk fight myself.
Not a classic? Everything else about the analysis was spot on but the conclusion fell at that line.

And you can tell that at least his Hogwarts theme was demade for the GBC game.

This was literally my first turn based rpg. Ok no, digimon world2, then this, then Pokémon yellow, then Mario superstar saga.
nice review man, I've played this game on and off since I was a kid. a really under rated RPG for the gameboy you should make more videos like this!

when people tell me that all movie licensed games are shit I immediately laugh in their face and show them this among other games like Sweet home

Oh this is gbc and I played them in Gba it's because they are different versions
This was my jam as a kid lol
Probably my most nostalgic game.
The only games I really had on GBC were Pokemon Gold, Crystal and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
The only games worth playing back then!
Ya missed out on the Oracle games, Link's awakening, Super Mario Deluxe, and Shantae.
Angeela? I thought it was a Ford Anglia.
I actually looked up how to pronounce “Angila” before recording narration and that’s the pronunciation I found sooooooo 🤷🏼♂️
Great video! Loved the game.
Ah yes, my introduction to Harry Potter (yes, seriously) I just wish all the other handheld games were RPGs (besides Prisoner of Azkaban of course)
I’d do anything to go back to 2002
Did you do the game cubee exclusive?
I have not covered Chamber of Secrets on Gamecube. I bought it used a few months back and I liked what I played!
After watching your videos i feel like i want to look for a game boy and play
Thank’s

I don't like the battle system in chamber of secrets its not quick or prisoner of Azkaban.
Its an Anglia, not an 'anjila"
they do *not* look identical, the spritework in Chamber of Secrets is *w a y* better.
Prisoner of Azkaban GBA review?!
Coming soon!
who still has this game in 2019
