I'll never get over this: 2003 was the LAST great epic year for the VMA's
    1. There was always something about NYC and Radio City Music Hall that has made the awards epic. Sure, they eventually returned in 2006, 2009 and 2017
    2. The calibre of guests was just epic - They had legendary acts like Madonna, Duran Duran, Run DMC...the veteran pop acts like Britney, Christina, Beyoncé and Justin and upcoming acts like 50 Cent, Good Charlote...it was a great mix
    3. Regardless of everything, Chris Rock was a good host

There’s a lot more behind Mike’s reaction and overall demeanor from that particular VMAs-by “a lot more,” I mean, there was some foul fuckery behind the scenes.
I'll try to summarize; I know I'll miss some details because it's been a minute, though.
MTV wanted to “celebrate” Michael’s birthday and career, which led to them *[not everyone at MTV, obviously-you know what I mean, I hope, lol]* talking to Mike’s management/team at the time about Michael receiving an ‘Artist of the Millennium Award.’
Michael and his management/team believed he would receive this award while the awards celebrated his birthday and career because that's what MTV told them.
It wasn't until right before Britney announced Michael’s entrance to the stage while wishing him a Happy Birthday that Mike and his team found out that MTV lied about the award and that they were essentially pranking him/pulling a stunt.
Right before Michael walks out on stage, you, quite literally, can see someone push/nudge him out onto the stage because he was livid *[rightfully so]* and didn't want to go out there-you don't see the person but instead can see Michael somewhat stumble out and collect himself before he walks over to Britney.
Ultimately, if I remember correctly, MTV wanted Mike to appear at the award ceremony that year; However, Michael didn't want to go unless it was worth it *[the man went to God knows how many award shows throughout his career from the time he was a child, so again, can't blame him, lol],* so certain people at MTV decided to lie to get Mike to show up as if it was “so fucking hilarious.”
There was a reason why there was some ridiculous award/trophy on the Birthday thing that came out when Britney was honoring Michael and his Birthday, not to mention why MTV curated Britney’s speech to say the words “Artist of the Millenium” on the teleprompter *[I think Brit said something along the lines of “to me, he's the artist of the millennium” or something to that effect]* before Michael came out-it was all deliberate and all bullshit.
Of course, that's not how the media portrayed things, and MTV denied they lied to Mike and his team; They instead made it seem like Michael was “simply confused,” when that is not only bullshit but also incredibly unbelievable considering the series of confirmations that take place between a person’s team and an agency like MTV when they decide to give an honorary award out to someone.
To be clear, Britney was not a part of any of this fuckery that MTV pulled and knew nothing about it.

The MTV2 award was only for all the artists that were played onthe MTV2 channel. It was basically the rock/alternative channel & they had MTV Base for all the RnB & HipHop Acts... My parents payed for cable. The evolution & downfall of MTV is legendary.

I love this series and I’m so glad to be watching these as they are released. Also- MTV2 what a time! Truly it was the only place you could listen to music- but I could have sworn mtv2 was just ~about the music~ and the award was a reflection of the stuff that was Music for Music People. Like sucker free Sunday was blowing up new rap artists on MTV 2 and it was all trying to recapture the magic of original “underground and edgy” mtv

Ugh! Me and my friends really brought into the “Justin was wronged by Britney” narrative back in the day and I truly hate that for us. Combine that with his “I love black people” campaign and we were down so bad. I’m glad we’re looking back and pointing out how problematic he was.
