I was in marching band in high school. You learn the music, then you learn every position in the show that you're supposed to occupy and how many music measures you have to get from spot to spot. Then you practice moving from spot to spot with the music. It's a lot of hours in the hot sun, and practice, practice, practice mostly. If you look here on youtube, you can watch marching band competitions.
As someone who used to perform in these types of halftime shows, the band uses hash marks and yard lines on the field to gauge their position. You also need to keep on the eye on the person next to you and be within the prescribed distance & desired angle all while playing your instrument. Lots of hard work but a lot of fun and great memories.
As a lifetime Ohio State fan (I'm 70!) - I love my Buckeyes and this band is referred to as TBDBITL - which means The Best Damn Band in the Land!! They are amazing - they do a NEW halftime show every home game and sometimes that is 2 or 3 weeks in a row!! They are not only marching, but playing their instruments! By the way - this is an all Brass band - there are no woodwinds (like Clarinets, flutes etc!!) They are just incredible!!
@@SGlitz I'm not a sports fan, my family are Detroit natives, you have to give it to the band, come on. Is there any way in this world there is any marching band this good, and are you saying Michigan's is this good? You know they're not. I was born in Detroit, grew up in Columbus. You know OSU has the best band. You know it.
Having done marching band and then drum & bugle corps for a combined 13 years (and then taught it)...yes, falls and mishaps do happen. I once tripped while marching backwards, accidentally did a reverse somersault, popped back up and continued marching. Fun times lol
Those kids are 18-22 years old and they also have classes while practicing many days a week (full time job + school and studying).. the good thing is they get scholarships for being in the marching band..
I find id so crazy that they leaen it in two weeks, that they are also playing instruments, and that they know where to go and march and stand. Its amazing
You practice for months lol. We had little marching disc's. We have a diagram we follow place our chips on the field and practice nonstop marching to each chip. Once you get the march down and memorized you do it with music and keep practicing until you know it inside and out and keep perfecting it as a group
My school matching band ,we had only 4 days to get the whole program to be memorizing everything , be ready on the buses by 3 pm . For away games , and once in the band your spoken for the next four years, if you have a out of state parade , and thanksgiving day occurs , you have to do what is expected , your there and you will not be with family . Competitions as well , as well holding down a full class load , must maintain a 3.85 grade points in order to march, no matter what.
got to do high school marching competition finals here in 1992 (old, i know) this place looks massive from the stands but it is unbelievably large from on the field, awe inspiring, feels like a mile from the grass to the top edge
It takes a lot more than a week. I was in marching band, and we practiced 2 weeks minimum to learn the music before we ever began marching positioning. Then we spent 3-4 weeks practicing music and marching positions before the first performance. Typically practices start in late July/early August while the first game isn't until the end of August/start of September.
You guys are awesome. I remember the original reaction video. You guys might enjoy watching a video of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade or even watching it live, if you can. It’s amazing.
You guys need to watch with Jono their video game one. I'm blown away by that one. And Kat, whoever sent you that University of Utah hoodie is from Utah.
just because it doesn't always get mentioned people usually think of sports but scholarships are given for music and art as well as math and science even animal husbandry just depends on the school
My alma mater, seen many of these in my life. They are truly TBDBITL. Also, Michigan is our biggest rival and it’s considered to be the best in US sports, so if the band ever needs someone or something to be vanquished for their show, it will be always be in Michigan gear.
The dinosaur ate a person wearing michigan gear. Ohio State vs. Michigan is one of the biggest rivalries in all US sports. They play each other every year at the end of the season. Ohio State vs. Michigan is referred to as "The Game" - it needs no more description because it is THE game for fans of either team... GO BUCKEYES!!!!

Grahams, I could say more, but for a change, I'll keep it short by just pointing out that in Jurassic Park, a player from the opponent in this game--Michigan--was eaten by the T-rex, and in Pirates, the sailing ship Michigan was sunk with 1 shot, and sank like the Titanic.
I don’t know if it is the day for Ohio but for the university of Wyoming Western Thunder Marching Band we lean a different show each week. And no not all of them are this big but we have to memorize different music and drill each week. But it’s worth every hour of practice
The music tells us where to stand and when to move. The bigger question is how they choreograph it...that's the real talent! And, I'm from Michigan, I am contractually obligated to hate Ohio State. Except for the marching band. Us marching bands have to stick together.
Hey Graham Fam, I asked Jono, with no response, but I have an idea or a proposition for when you come to America in October. It has to do with Halloween and a theme park. If your interested please reply.
I think, and I live in Texas so no offense, that they should start with Texas and then go to OSU. We have to be real about it, OSU's band is so superior that suggesting watching A&M after just watching this video would be such a let down. I couldn't play in any band anywhere so I am not being shady to A&M. Just being realistic. They're no OSU. You know they aren't.
I wish ya'll would react to the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band for Texas A&M. They are a TOTALLY different style of marching band and IMO just as equally as amazing, but for different reasons. They are a more traditional war-style marching band.
I think reacting to the Aggies after watching OSU would be such a serious let down. No offense to how amazing the Aggies band is, but it's just not the same and shouldn't be hyped the same way. At least you admit that it's totally different, but it really isn't equally as amazing. I don't care where you're from, unless you see Aggies first, you're not going to be blown away. You're just going to recognize they're not as good as OSU. And I've lived in Texas for ten years. I know it hurts. But the amount of people who suggest the Aggies after someone reacts to OSU makes me cringe. They're not going to be mean about something, but they're not going to be impressed after watching OSU marching band. They're just not.
Now, watch Texas A&Ms marching. They are a military precision marching band. They play military marches, patriotic and classic music. They can almost mesmerize you with the way they move. It's like watching machine parts working. I was in a high school marching band, and the amount of time and effort for any college band must be staggering. Also, check out any of the HBCU bands. They but on big, razzle dazzle shows that are typically breathtaking. Love your videos.
If you react to the Aggies as everyone always insists on OSU band reactions, you will be disappointed. They are fantastic. But they are a watch before OSU, not a watch after. It will be a let down the way people hype up A&M. They're prideful instead of realistic. There are a lot more OSU videos that are really impressive to react to. There aren't any Aggies videos that compare to any OSU video. And I live in Texas. I'm just realistic, lol. Y'all stop being biased and stop getting people's hopes up suggesting A&M. It's nothing to OSU and you know it.
I’m sorry, sweetie. You’re way off though and you have to remember their playing instruments at the same time, but it takes months to coordinate it before the football season starts.

Every person on the field is also playing an instrument and they practice the steps alone in about a month

I live in Ohio, And Pride is an Understatement about our Buckeyes.
Greetings from Michigan. I want to say you have a lot to be proud of. OSU has great academics, great athletics and an obviously great marching band.

My daughter did marching band competition there about 10 years ago. The OSU band did their video game show for us, and of course Script Ohio.
You forget the they are also all playing instruments , the music you hear is them playing while doing these
OH-IO STATE MY HOME TEAM ❤

I cant imagine playing an instrument, while skating much less doing it in formations 😂😂 now that would be something 😉
there are giant tv's that would show the movement of the band on each end of the stadium. Ohio State and Michigan are rivalries in sports.

Good start. Christopher Reeves in Superman 1 and 2. Are my favorite Superman movies.
This takes years of effort and dedication to do this
Buckeye for life! ❤
Lord of the rings mom is right
If you have never seen them live it is truly amazing halftime show
All the band members are students who were in class the day before the game. T Rex ate the other teams mascot.
I was in a comp marching like dci osu is a show band they practice a new routine every time and practice bout 40 hrs per week
Did you see the T-rex eat the Drum Major and spit out his helmut?
Most college matching bands change their show once a week. Unbelievable!!!

Hey Mom get the little guy’s thyroid checked. Great reaction.
They are great team and you should really see an NFL game or college (American football) 🏈 game
TBDBITL does a different, new show every home game. Every week or two, a completely new show
Amazing!
Go Buckeyes!
The Ohio State University are known for the best "Damn band in the land"
Must see their Tribute To Michael Jackson ‼️
📻🙂
The band spends more time practicing on the football field than the football team does.
