  • Use the button on the Lutron Pico remote to set HomeKit scenes!
    I've used Lutron Caseta smart wall switches in my HomeKit setup for a long time. A big selling point is that you can pair these with the Pico remotes for 3 way switch setups (two switches that control one light).
    These pico remotes have a button in the middle that never gets much use in my house. In this video I will show you how you can use this button to trigger your HomeKit scenes and accessories. Finally get some good use out of this little button!

    Great video, Shane. I’ve remembered this video was out there so when I finally got my Casetas all over the house this week, I went back and watched this today. You took at all the hard part as it took about 5 minutes in total to do two of these remotes. A common pathway in the house is the upper level, down to flights of stairs, across a small hallway, and out through the garage. Often we do this in reverse. I now have Picos where the uppermost Pico turns the entire pathway on as down the garage Pico. Thanks for the great hack!

    This is SO brilliant. I’ve never used the small button on the Pico and now there is a fantastic use for them! Further, as they are not an intuitive button, it’s great as most folks walking by would not think to press it when wanting to turn on/off a light

    Hey Shane. Great video, great hack that works very well! I just installed my first Caseta switches today along with 2 Pico remotes. Used your hack to create an automation on the Pico remote scene button and it worked first time like a charm. Again, you continue to deliver solid value 100% of the time on your channel. I have used that button for ‘nighttime’ brightness in my master bedroom, which has worked great. It’s slick that you can tie it to everything else in the house too.

    Another Good Vid Shane. I have been using Lurton switches for a long time and have lots of them best HomeKit switch imo. My question is how did you set up your code red seen to flash the lights red?

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  4 года назад

      Thanks Jeremy! There are a couple of ways to setup the lights to flash like that. The best way is if you have lights that expose the "light effect mode" to homekit...however most do not. I know the vocolinc lights do. I talked about that in this video: ruclips.net/video/2vgsBaVcC_Q/видео.html
      Another way is through shortcuts and you can't include it in a scene quite the same, but here is a video showing this method: ruclips.net/video/SQx8r_kwnbk/видео.html

    Hello Shane, I've been watching your videos lately since I've became interested in purchasing a few smart light switches currently have Philips hue but would love to buy a few smart light switches for where color isn't needed. I liked the aqara dual rocker switches you reviewed a bit back but also liked the lutron caseta smart switches but is there a dual rocker version of the lutron caseta smart switches similar to the aqara? I'd like to know before I venture into any of this two systems as both require a hub & I definitely need at least two dual rocker smart switches. Would appreciate your feedback, thanks

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  4 года назад +1

      I don't believe Lutron Caseta offers a dual switch unfortunately. Lutron Caseta switches are fantastic and I can't recommend them enough, however they are expensive and I don't think there is the dual option.
      For that you might have to go with Aqara. I don't know of many that offer a dual rocker like that. I haven't used the Aqara switches too long, but I've been happy with all the other Aqara accessories that I own.

    • @ShaneCreates

      Not without controlling the lights also. Unless you use homebridge. I haven't tried it, but I've heard that there is a plugin that will expose the pico remote allowing you to use the buttons to control homekit accessories/scenes.

    thanks for the vid shane. could u explain a bit more about long pressing the button? what happens when u do that? how does that work?

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  4 года назад +1

      Renfred Tay sorry if that was unclear. The button on these serve as a “favorite” setting so when you long press the button (10 seconds) it will save the current brightness level of the light.

    • @renfred
      @renfred 4 года назад

      Shane Whatley thanks for the reply. correct me if i am wrong in my understanding. so when u long press a physical button for 10s (even if the switch does not show up as one of the configurable buttons in the home app), homekit will remember the current state of the entire home (in other words it remembers the scene at the point in time). so when u press the button the next time, that scene is triggerred?

    • @renfred
      @renfred 4 года назад

      like how did homekit know that the long press for 10s on the button was meant for that particular light?

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  4 года назад +1

      So this pico remote really doesn’t have anything to do with HomeKit essentially. It is paired with a Lutron wall switch in the Lutron app (used for those 3 way switch setups I was talking about). The Lutron wall switch is what’s exposed to HomeKit. So basically, the pico remote sets the brightness of the wall switch, and that wall switch is exposed to HomeKit, therefore can be used to trigger automations. Hope that makes sense.

    • @renfred
      @renfred 4 года назад

      Shane Whatley oh i see it now. this was specifically for the lutron wall switch. i kept thinking that the 10s press thing could be applied to any button. thanks for helping clear that up! sorry everyone if i caused any confusion.

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  3 года назад +1

      The pico remotes can only control other Lutron switches/lights. Unless you have homebridge or hoobs setup...I believe there is a plugin that allows you to use it to control any homekit accessory.
      Your best bet is probably to find a homekit button that you can use for your LiFX bulbs. There are a number of them with different designs, etc. Phillips Hue dimmer switch, Eve button, Aqara mini switch...just to name a few. Some may require a hub.

      Jason Ong the little pico remote one this one is just used to pair with Lutron Caseta switches when you need to replace a 3 way switch. Lutron Caseta smart switches are fantastic. I’ve been using them for a long time and super reliable. They are a great option if you have way switches to replace. They are pricey tho and require a bridge. The Aqara switches from my other video are more affordable and good too but I haven’t been using them that long. They also require a bridge. There are some WiFi switches available if you want one that doesn’t require a bridge, but I haven’t used any.

      @@ShaneCreates I love Lutron Caseta and agree with you on the reliability. Lutron invented the dimmer... they know it better than anyone and that shows in the quality of the product.

  • @FirstLastOne
    @FirstLastOne 3 года назад +1

    I have been using Caseta dimmers for over 5 years and it's been a hit and miss depending on what you're dimming.
    Caseta dimmers work but are limited by their outdated, analogue dimming circuitry which Lutron has been using for well over 30 years. It's old and inefficient technology that's very limited. Expect to loose about 12% of your supply voltage to the dimmer's antiquated technology. It was really noticeable back in the Halogen lighting days with Lutron's previous dimmer lines and still noticeable now with the Caseta line when you use higher end LED PAR20, PAR30 and PAR38 LEDs with a super high output and high CRI. What you see with a voltage meter at the e26 socket with the dimmer at full setting is around 103V to 106V on a 120V supply which ends up taking the edge off high performance LED lights and making them look average.
    If you are only using average, middle of the road LEDs and/or almost always dimming them, then it's no problem as you won't miss having 12% less light output at the top to begin with. How Lutron can call these 'smart light controls' when they are still using 30+ year old analogue dimming technology is beyond embarrassing. Why not go completely digital when the light sources these days are for the most part digital?
