windows 24H2 Arm. How to install on Raspberry Pi 5 & Orange Pi 5 plus

- The way I found to get the latest insider Windows builds onto a Raspberry Pi 5.
First setup Windows 11 on a supported RK3588 device. Then use that Windows installation with the Raspberry Pi uefi boot on an sd card.
I used wor flasher as other methods of flashing Windows didn’t seem to like the latest builds. You can’t register for insider updates on RK3588 or Raspberry Pi 5 as they are unsupported devices

It'd be cool to see how the Pi 5 and Orange Pi 5 Plus score on Cinebench 2024 (it has a Windows on Arm native version), as well as Geekbench 6 for Windows on Arm.
The lack of gpu support isn’t going to give favourable results. Worth a look though 👍🏼
@@leepspvideo True! But Cinebench especially would help compare the Pi 5 to other kits like the Windows Dev Kit and the new Snapdragon X when it comes out.

Thanks Lee for another informative video, great to see how far Raspberry Pi has come in running more powerful OS’s.
Have a great day!
Just figured out a much easier way to get the latest version on Pi5, used rufus to make a windowstogo install on the storage device, mounted the efi and copied the rpi5 uefi files and booted.
Thanks man I was able to boot windows 11 thanks your comment ❤
Great video also Pinn OS is available from the raspberry pi imager app now.
Also can you make some other steam game tests.
Much love
MS dropped support for armv8.0 at one stage, so pi4 indeed might not be supported. But pi5 is armv8.2
Now, INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE is not what I saw coming. I believe that this is one of three things: Raspberry Pi’s ARM chip not in an officially supported device; Raspberry Pi being weird; or Microsoft being Microsoft and keeping the fancy stuff in a walled garden
It's a shame that Microsoft can't keep everyone's personal data inside that same walled garden too!
Does VirtualBox run on x86-64 on the 24H2 prism emulation?
Wish we had official UEFI support. 😫
Is it fine to use a non-overclocked Pi 5 with an official Pi 4 power supply?
Yes, but it won't be able to use a lot of power on it though

You either need to choose the full cpu performance (even non-+clock) or more power to USB. Just get the psu to save the hassle
what linux distro did you run that looked so windows like?

is there a way to run this or wor project on a 3.5 or 4.3 inch display running on a pi 4b. i cant get it to work.. hdmi out to a big screen works though
You can’t change the resolution lower than 1080. Surely Android is better for such a small screen;. What was the use case?
It's super cool that the Pi can do this. From a geek perspective, I love it. From a practical perspective It's crazy. I can buy a cheap N100 mini pc for the same price as a tricked out Pi5 if I want to run Microsoft malware without all the drama. Very nice job though.
Or forget the N100 PC and Windows completely and pick up a used SFF PC on "your favourite auction site" for about $50 and that will have a 3rd or 4th generation Core i5 or i7 CPU in it, 4 or 8GB RAM (that is cheaply expandable) and just run Linux perfectly fine on that.
Modern mini PCs are complete waste of money and just add to landfill when there are more powerful used PCs out there that cost much less.
@@terrydaktyllus1320 That's an option.
@@ninline2000 Yes, thank you, Mr. Obvious.
It's cool to see Windows on Pi and great fun to tinker with. But it's not useable desktop replacement while the RUclips video performance is like a 15 year old pc.
Whoever said that a Raspberry Pi has to be a "desktop replacement"?
SBCs were originally designed as cheap educational coding devices for schoolkids and students, as cheaper industrial boards that can run variations of Linux, and for the hobbyist community to dabble with electronics, I/O and IoT.
Then a lot of people realised that they are good for retro-gaming, especially because the size of an SBC means it can go inside other boxes or in handhelds.
But then SBC makers suddenly started churning out more powerful devices but couldn't keep to the original $35 price bracket - so now you end up paying $80+ for an SBC for which you still need to buy cooling, a PSU and a case before you even get started. Yet you can pick up a more powerful 3rd or 4th generation Core i5 or i7 SFF PC used on auction sites for about $50 that will be cased, cooled and have a PSU.
So how does the economics of the $80 SBC work any more?
PS. I am able to watch RUclips perfectly fine on a Lenovo Thinkpad T61 from 2007 (= 17 year old PC) perfectly happily - not everything has to be in 1080p or 4K video to be perfectly watchable, as long as you have a normal attention span.
@@terrydaktyllus1320 "Whoever said that a Raspberry Pi has to be a "desktop replacement"? " - I didn't say it has to be. I said it's not. As I mentioned, it's a tinkerer's project. The problem is that these videos sell it like it is has desktop performance.
"how does the economics of the $80 SBC work any more?" - it doesn't, hence why RPi are cashing out and focusing on the industrial sector.
@@tafkawac I never said that you did say it has to be, please stop putting words into my mouth and then arguing against them.
You mentioning the fact that "Pi as a desktop replacement" exists in the minds of some people (which I also know to be true having seen many previous comments in channels about it) makes it a discussion topic that you raised that I that I then responded to - so stop being so defensive also.
I think we're in agreement here. As far as I am concerned, a $35 Pi made it a good device to mess around with on an electronics workbench or for a schoolkid to learn programming on - in either case, if the Pi got broken, it wouldn't be a big issue. $80+ for an SBC doesn't scale or make any economic sense.
But since the Pi 4, the Pi Foundation has lost direction and they're really not behaving like a non-profit organisation should be, in my view.
They are pandering to the "silly" demands of computer newbies who don't understand how you "engineer" a computing solution properly but just know how to build one single device that they believe should do everything and for that "everything", there should be a step-by-step video on how to do it because they lack the attention spans to read books or just try things out for themselves to learn.
It's their loss and our gain because that's why I can go to an auction site now and pick up a more powerful (than a Pi 5) used SFF PC for less money when I build my computing solutions - they're cheap because few people know how to make use of them properly.
Is there any point with this when Linux has box64 and Proton?
Yes, more compatibility
run O&O and shut off a bunch of bloat off and see how much better it is
...or just accept that putting Windows on any computing device is a pretty stupid decision to make in 2024 if you have any respect for your own data privacy. Install Linux and it will be the best Pi it can be, better than any "dissected" version of Windows.
Opi5 gang here
Mine get stuck on the "couldn't find the installation disk" error no matter what i do, and after every reboot pcie is reset to gen 2 and boot order as well. But even if i manually boot into my ssd it still brings this error. Have you any idea what could be the error?

Yes, we have no gpu support but loads of programs run fine
Very cool. I mean...not "install Raspbian" easy. This is "jailbreak a playstation to run linux" territory - haha. Windows on arm still needs a bit of polish.
No, Windows on ARM is the same as the concept as a flying bumble bee - by the laws of physics it shouldn't exist in the first place but somehow it does. With that said, I like bumble bees.
I'm not particularly opinionated about OS. I'll build a hackintosh in a heartbeat. I'd even run windows on a pi as a daily driver. I'd stick gnome on a macbook. If it's trying to support arm officially however, installer needs to be plug and play.
Will rufus or etcher work
Another commenter mentions using Rufus. I am not so sure it’s a serious comment. The Raspberry Pi is an Arm device without a bios, that’s the reason we install it in this way

It seems a waste of time getting Windows 11 on aPI. 5, unless it is working perfectly. Not that i would want Windows 11on there in the first. As i have a Windows 11 PC and a IMAC
If you don’t have another device and you want to run a program that only supports Windows it can be useful
If you don’t have another device and you want to run a program that only supports Windows it can be useful
@@leepspvideo If you don't have a computing device to run Windows then it's cheaper and more efficient to buy a used PC on an auction site to run Windows 10 on because you can pick up a 3rd or 4th generation Core i5 or i7 SFF PC for less money than a Pi.
I think it's an extremely silly decision to make to start with nothing but then buy a Pi to run Windows - completely pointless.
Plus that's the time to start learning Linux because when support for Windows 10 ends and that PC can't run Windows 11, then that's the time to stick Linux on it - which will run fine on it for years to come.
@@terrydaktyllus1320 I have never recommended buying a Pi to use Windows. If you already have a Pi and are using it, but then you need Windows for a particular task that isn’t available on any other system. You can install windows on an sd card or usb stick. It’s just another option.
@@leepspvideo My interpretation of your words is if you have nothing but suddenly decide that you need a Windows instance, then a Pi is a viable platform on which to do that - which is the bit I take issue with.
Simply being able to "run" Windows (or any OS) on a platform isn't the same as replacing a full desktop machine with it because, in my opinion, when people say "desktop" then they means "a computer that runs hi-def video on RUclips, plays a few modern games and allows them to do video editing" - and a Pi will, of course, struggle with that, even on Linux.
Please install on Android phone😭
You are using a lot of outdated stuff on your orange pi 5 plus. For example ethernet drivers already exist for a while now. The instructions are a mess rn so it's best to join the windows on r discord to figure out how to install windows 11 properly. You're using outdated uefi, drivers, etc
The Discord points you to the latest uefi which I have linked in the description and am using. It also links to the guide on the wor site from April 2023.
What uefi for Rockchip is newer than 0.9.1? Can you link it, or let me know where it’s showing in the Discord.
Can you be more specific with which drivers etc you think are old?
Discord is for time wasters that just want to sit there throwing memes at each other and trying to impress each other. Nothing of any use is achieved on Discord. I've lost count of the number of so-called "technical" Discord channels that are just filled with a bunch of kids that can't even write English properly, and I've then just dropped off them.
@@leepspvideo I saw on the discord that they already told you where to find the newer uefi releases, the newer drivers for everything and how to get nvme working. I look forward to a possible video sometime with everything up to date
