You’ve graduated from Oxford and Harvard - both unbelievable achievements! You are an inspiration to so many and whilst it’s absolutely gutting now, rejection makes us all the more resilient. It does not define our self-worth and you have achieved so much already that with or without NYU you have such a bright future. Keep being your brilliant, determined self - NYU do not know who they are missing! 💖

Rejection is redirection Vee whether it’s for a degree, a relationship or an opportunity. You will have something better and meant for you coming your way. I used to cry when I was rejected by schools, employers, in love and by friends, but now I realize that my life has still been amazing without all those things and people that I chased but rejected me… I’ve got on to get better schools, jobs and met amazing people in my life that saw the potential in me. It’s their loss. Cry it out for awhile and use it as fuel and motivation to work on your next plan! 💪 I was rejected by my crush recently and I was sad, but I know that I haven’t met even half of all the people that I will love and that will love back in this life. It’s extremely hard to not let it affect your self-worth, but I remember that not everything worked out as I wanted to be in the past and I still had an incredible and fulfilled life. In a way, it always works out in the end and always for the better. ❤️❤️❤️

    Hi Vee:
Before I go into super support mode, I am first going to come at you as an American student who has been there and who can give some advice you may not know.
    1. Every doctoral program can only taken a very limited number of students. This is because these doctoral programs are fully funded and that funding almost always comes from the supervisory team in your field.
Unfortunately that also means that domestic students are often preferred because there isn’t the added cost of applying for and waiting on a visa for an international student. Many programs will still take on international students but, again, it REALLY is ultra competitive for a very, very narrow number of slots.
Example: My children’s father had wanted to do a doctorate in the states and applied in New York (mainly because there was a girl there he had been in love with { 😉}, but they didn’t take him because they had no extra funding for his role.
He had also applied to a program in another state and that lab, at the time, had JUST been given funding for a new research protocol and had a role he could fill.
He started his Ph.D. there BUT halfway through, his P.I. (Principle Investigator) was recruited by another organisation and decided to disband his lab in order to take this new position in another state. Which means ALL of the doctoral students had to find new labs to finish their doctorates in because the university couldn’t keep them on without funding. Again, they ALL had the necessary credentials for their research focus but without funding, it just wasn’t possible.
He then wrote to labs working on similar research in another country and there were TWO labs who were waiting on funding for new projects that he would fit into perfectly.
As a result they BOTH decided that whoever received the funding would take him on.
So, he didn’t get a PhD from New York or from another US state, but got a DPhil from Oxford instead - NOT because he wasn’t competitive enough for any of them, but because of funding.
    2. Taking the above example. Also know that MANY doctoral programs can and many will direct you to programs which may still have funding to take you on. This is often not known to potential students but it happens a lot.
So, if this department couldn’t take you on, perhaps they know a department (even still within NYU or perhaps another NYC uni) that can take you on.
    3. Which brings me to #3 - Almost ALL doctoral programs will offer you feedback on your application, including factors on their side that may have factored in.
It is worth asking for that feedback now, before your application is filed away.
Not only is this a massive help but you can ask to have it reconsidered if you can provide any further support to the application.
This sometimes happens as well as the difference between your position in September and that in March may have greatly changed.
For instance, in September, you hadn’t yet given your talk at Harvard etc.
    4. Even if the feedback can’t be worked to benefit the application as it is now, speaking to the school does help. Try to speak DIRECTLY to the person who would have been your doctoral supervisor. Don’t speak to some namelsss, faceless, admissions person. Speak to the person you wanted to work with.
Sometimes the admissions decisions are made by people unrelated to the individual you would be working with most and by hearing your voice directly a role may end up being made possible anyway.
This happened to me when I went to apply for a job at a university. There was a general HR department that had no understanding of the field I was applying to but I happened to have the email address of the director of the program. I wrote to the director explaining why I felt I could benefit his study and the next week I had a job.
    5. Even if none of this helps, it is worth the fight and you will definitely gain feedback to take and learn from for the next time.
It is hard to receive those rejection letters. I know. I really have been there. Especially when you know deep down you have what it takes and you are ready to show it. I once applied for the same job three different times, improving my knowledge, skills and experience between each effort and still it was a no every time. It hurt - A LOT, but I knew it wasn’t about me. It just wasn’t meant to be my role.
Please know Vee, you are worth it and you DO have what it takes. There may just be other factors that have nothing to do with you such a funding, lack of supervisor for your proposed thesis, lack of space to take on as many students as they may have want, or anything else.
Please take on board the advice I have given and, worst case scenario, you just find out this was not a role meant for you after doing everything possible to secure it.
Our hearts break for you. We do REALLY know how much you wanted it. It mat not be too late, but if it is, your door just happened arrived yet but when it does - STAND BACK BECAUSE YOU ARE COMING THROUGH READY, STRONG, AND INVINCIBLE!!!
    So, so, so much love,
    🌹, Ariadne and Hannah

The first time I applied for a PhD in Engineering I got rejected. At the time I was super sad and disappointed but now I look back and realise that my project was not a solid one. Half a year after that, I reapplied to another PhD program with a new and much improved project, and I got in. If I got accepted the first time, I would suffer later because I still had a few things to learn first. Take this rejection as an opportunity to improve yourself and the ideas that you have and want to explore during the PhD. If you have the chance, start doing some research on related topics and publish some papers. That will help when applying next time. Don't give up and stay strong!

My gut reaction was 'if Vee got rejected then there's no hope for any of us!'.
But from what I've heard, PhD applications are a lot about fit with the department and a lot of people have to apply for multiple years to get in. NYU knows, like all of us, how valuable and awesome you are so this doesn't mean that you're not good enough in any way. I'm dreaming of doing my PhD in the States as well so I feel for you but you're such a powerhouse. I know you will take this sadness and grow from it, and I know you'll go on to do even greater things.
Edit: I also appreciate you being vulnerable here. It must be so hard to grieve over this publicly but you're such a good role model in showing your audience that you don't have to push bad feelings away, you need to process them.

Omg vee :( I’m so so sorry this happened to you. I’ve been through many rounds of rejection, so i get how this feels. The first time i applied for graduate school, i applied to six schools and got rejected from all of them. I was your age at the time, and it hit me to my core. The next year, i applied to one program and got in but after a year of being there, i realized that it wasn’t a good fit so i left. After another year, i applied to more programs and got into them all, including NYU. I’m a NYU graduate student now, at 27, and honestly it was all about timing. God’s timing. NYU is missing out and I’m so upset that they rejected you. But i want to pass on a lesson from when I got rejected: this is God/the universe/who or whatever you believe in saying, “not yet”. Your time is coming, Vee. I know it ❤️

PHD committees want to see proof that you can carry out research. Try to publish 3 papers in the next year, pick a topic and gather some hard working smart friends as co-authors and do some scoping review or anything related to your field that is publishable. Everyone that got rejected then accepted into PHD's worked super hard to publish stuff to prove they could deliver research. Best of luck!

as someone who has been rejected from a PhD program before, I am so sorry! it really hurts but I've realized it was a blessing disguise. It allowed me to reevaluate goals and timelines. Still want to get a PhD one day but I've acknowledged that it's simply going to take time.
Some tips from someone who's been through the process before:
Stay in contact with your professor of interest.
Research interests are so, so important. If your research interests aren't lining up with any faculty, they will move on to the next person.
Apply to multiple. You'll hear back from half.
For education related PhDs, they rarely accept anyone under 25. They want you to have professional experience, especially classroom experience.
Keep it up! For many people, the first round of PhD applications are the learning round.

For PhD programs you need to have prior research experience. You need to also have dedication to that field. It’s hard to go from classics to educations suddenly without having prior experience in it. Also you need to be prepared to rotate with different professors and find the type of research you want to do.

I’m so sorry Vee! I’m going through rejection as well because I just got rejected from an internship program that I was so committed on getting. I spent weeks preparing my application, and networking. Someone told me “Maybe it’s just not for you” which stung a lot. But I had to accept that it is just not my time. But that will not stop me from applying again next year.
Do not give up on your dreams. You can always apply again next year and spend this year gaining more experience to add to your CV. Reframe your mindset. Just because this year is not your time maybe next year will be. Maybe next year will be better because the pandemic will be non-existent by then. Right now everything is still uncertain with the restrictions because of the new variants. Delay is not denial.

Here are my 2 cents as someone in academia. Firstly, you could do with some classroom experience. To say you're passionate about education when all you've really done is be a student isn't enough. Secondly, you need research experience or a strong research proposal - a PhD is a research degree after all.

I have been watching your vlogs while writing my PhD applications (also in Education)! I was planning to only apply for one, but my partner convinced me to apply for at least one other university. Last week I got rejected for the university I initially applied to (my first choice). Not because I wasn't good enough, but because they had a massive decrease in funding and they ended up not having a spot in my specialization at all. One of the profs reached out to me and said that I did everything right, but the money just wasn't there. I felt quite defeated for about 2 days. I was still waiting for hear from my second application, but I definitely lost faith. Especially because I didn't think I would get a scholarship / funding and I would not be able to afford it without. Three days later, I got accepted to the PhD program and offered the most amazing scholarship. The university wasn't my first choice, but I am so glad I applied anyway.
In 6 months I will be moving from Europe to Canada :).

Graduate school admission are very unpredictable. You should never apply to only one school. They only have vacancy for 1 or 2 student per year. For example, I applied to physics program especially experimental particle physics. In my field, only 1 or 2 students are accepted per year. Graduate schools are competitive. Don’t set your heart to one school. Be open to adjust with situation.

I applied to NYU Vilcek for PhD this year and got rejected too. I applied to other schools and haven't received a single acceptance yet. Since it's almost March, I doubt that the radio silence will bring any positive news. For some personal reasons, PhD this year in the States was extremely important to me. I don't think I will be able to make a better application in the next few years to drastically change my chances. My recommenders might not want to recommend me in future cycles. Mentally, I am at my worst right now and unfortunately, I don't have the support system of friends and family.

@@rishitachakraborty9783 I had been an A student till my final 2 years of high school when I took AP classes. But because I was told I was smart, I presented an attitude of everything being alright, I thought hey my grades will get better, hey why plan for college it will all happen. Most of all I had not acknowledged my past mistakes to myself, which would have allowed to see patterns, where I went wrong so I could have make tweaks/improvements. This lack of acknowledging past mistakes transfers to today where my mom thinks I dropped out of college because I was partying, but truth is I had not planned ahead and fixed the problems and my 3 month stint in college was me depressed in my room not coming out as I was still having difficulty with my grades.
Anyways, for people of color the support system is lacking most of the time, we have this idea where we think we can do it all ourselves, but we can't. I would start my taking in that the fact you are to the level of having applied to a PHD program means you have reached the pinnacle in a step towards improving your education. They are notoriously competitive and you went through the process in this hectic time, the pandemic, the fact that you even had time to apply with all your circumstances you may be being too hard on yourself.
I would write out your fears, it may put the pressure on to a piece of paper, where you can see yourself separate from the failure and allow you to plan, scratch that, plot your plans for your grand comeback.
      news.uchicago.edu/story/writing-about-worries-eases-anxiety-and-improves-test-performance
People have difficulty not rooting for others, your professors may probably be happy to recommend you again, who doesn't like a comeback kid!
I'm interested in history of capitalism and alternatives like socialism as I believe we need a degrowth system. I'm interested in sociology, economics, political science, philosophy, ethic studies, literature, film, videogames, and especially the perspectives of marginalized groups to find the solutions to our problems in our society. I hope you find what drives you and exist however you want.
Some of my goals include being a better uncle, son, brother, etc. I would try to reconnect with family or friends, or find new friends, but I know as someone who is only starting to do this that it is tough without a support system. I am proud of my sister even though didn't go to college she has many friends and is outgoing as opposed to me. My parents came from Honduras the second poorest country in the western hemisphere after Haiti, and so I hope to make them proud because they sacrificed so much. I root for you and even though I don't know you, I am proud of where you've come.
Anyhow, if you need assistance with anything send a private mail and I can send you information.

@@aungavarttien4716 Your interests are fascinating. In my case, I wanted to pursue my doctorate degree in the field of Biostatistics (or related). Mostly, I wanted to study how climate change affects human health, and also learn ways to reduce carbon emissions in Big Tech.
I relate to your story in many ways. During the initial years of my Bachelor's, I was going through a rough time. This brought down my grades. Hence, for the next few semesters I had to take more exams than my peers (take many retests). This was also hard. Therefore, my Bachelor's GPA was low. Though I shined during my Master's and got near-perfect scores, my Bachelor's grades will definitely be a factor for the admission committee.
Furthermore, there indeed exists discrimination in the education system and stuff that can't be explained in SOPs. Being a first-gen, my parents couldn't advise me on anything academically. This isn't just a personal scenario. Some of my first-gen peers were toppers, and yet they lagged behind those who were more privileged. I have only 3 major research experiences. Two of them are my BSc and MSc dissertations and the 3rd one is a contributed talk at an international conference (All I did completely alone). On the other hand, I saw my classmates doing projects under their family members who were professors. From very early on, they knew how to conduct research, collaborate with their peers, and were aware of the importance of chumming it up to the professors. Now, I feel like an idiot to not have known these things back then. If I knew, perhaps I could have been involved in more projects.
My Master's uni was a prestigious one in my country, but the class size was small and I was the only one who wanted to do a Ph.D. abroad. Many from my department usually don't go to the USA. Hence, that could have been a major factor as my recommenders wouldn't have been known faces. In my country, prior research experience isn't needed for a Ph.D. Therefore, there wasn't much research going on within the department and I couldn't find many collaborators. I had to reach out to a professor in a different university to conduct research independently for my conference presentation. His style was more hands-off.
Finally, it is taboo to talk about mental health conditions in the SOP. I can't even afford professional help and am pretty sure that I have undiagnosed ADHD and depression. But it is clear that people who are privileged and have received more support, have more chances of getting accepted. As I mentioned before, due to personal reasons, this year was very important. The only way that I can increase my chances in the coming cycles is if I have more publications and research experience. I cannot do that alone and would need collaborators. Also, research is only possible through a job, which I currently don't have. Not sure how I'm gonna proceed but... Que Sera Sera.

    • @aungavarttien4716
      @aungavarttien4716 2 года назад +1

@@rishitachakraborty9783 I definitely believe there is the type of discrimination you explain; in fact, it sounds like some of what is described in Anthony Abraham Jack's, The Privileged Poor. The social cues are a hidden knowledge/language caused and exacerbated by systematic inequalities. So you can be made to feel like a fool by a systematic flaw, where the known social cues of the elite and upper, to middle classes are who the system is made for. For instance, the concept of office hours was unknown me, being on a friend to friend basis with your professors, and my parents had no idea how to traverse education. And in life being friendly with your coworkers transfers from office hours and friendly with professors, in real life buying a house is much easier if the legalities are already known, especially to the middle classes whose friends might be lawyers etc. I also relate to Vee Kativhu studying in her mom's bedroom, the kitchen everywhere, because my brothers and I have all done that, no space! But hey, (positive Vee spin on it) I get bored sitting in the same space for too long!
I wish I could of been there, been more present for my brothers, nieces, my community. I have to remind myself, that unfortunately at the time, I wasn't in the right state of mind to be able to. My shame didn't allow me to communicate my excess 10k college debt to my youngest brother as a caution, but fortunately I guess he saw the bill and took caution, planned and has done a better job of figuring out what to do/who he is. I became more distant, and because I needed to figure out my stuff out first, my trying to get my niece to believe in herself when she thought she was "stupid" without my being able to describe where I'm coming from just wasn't enough for her to relate to. She probably thought I've always been an A student, he never doubted himself. The more I'm out there the more I can do, but I stopped talking to friends from high school, became antisocial, and now I'm in my early 30's.
So I'm making up for lost time, sent some study tips to my brother and he appreciated them, most of them he probably already knows, but most of the battle is doing/applying what we learn. I have sent messages of happy birthday to my niece, congratulated by brother for getting accepted for his masters in education at UCLA, and need to help my mom sell her mobile home/paint stuff. Anyhow this is to say, that I have study tips from crash course study tips some notes from Vee Kativhu's tips etc. You can also check study tips playlist on my RUclips, if you need to as well. Most helpful for me is calendar, task manager stuff, as time management is rough for me. I have learned some stuff about telling my parents that I would love their help in studying and that they can help me by not talking to me when I have my headphones on, even if I talk to them. Before I would just say what you're not supposed to say, which is I'm trying to study and you're distracting me. I think they appreciate me bringing them on my journey instead of making them feel like they are a bother. Learned this from Vee Kativhu's recent Vee Empowered ? on the section of communication, boundaries. Just yesterday, my parents were commenting on me not having ambition. I told them I have always been ambitious, my body and mind won't allow me to, and I've been in the what feels like the longest depression ever, slowly getting out. They were understanding, but I still can't believe it took me this long to start communicating and opening up.
I can ask my brother if he knows anyone that is doing Biophysics research? I should start asking around as well. Anyways, can't promise anything, besides that and some study tips. Today my dad went to a doctor's appointment, I just remembered I should of gone and asked around, you never know a friend of a friend, etc. My middle brother has ADHD and I think the pills work for him. Some people get manic and therapy is the other thing that can help like diet and exercise. At least that is what I've learned from Kimberly Foster's twitter comments (she has a fascinating video on her RUclips about it). But, I feel for you, disability is tough. Anyways, education is not antidote to working on ourselves, as education is only one part of ourselves, that is my biggest advice. However, if further education is ahead for you, it seems you know some of what will be required. Some planning, organization, setting up people you can lean on to keep you to your task etc.
And finally, what you want to study shows me that you care a lot about improving the world around you. All of the education you've done up until now, the gal, no the audacity to dream so big as to want to study abroad!? Immigrants, exchange students, first generation, they always make me an awe of their resilience. pikachu face my gawd, I want to root for your success whether it is saving the world, something in between, or simply existing how you choose to exist. I wish you all the luck in the world, peace.
ps: I live in the west coast USA.
pss: Took me long to reply, life, wanted to not ramble (failed) too much, and also wanted to up my grammer game, like you!
