    The ‘artsy’ illustration-heavy trend that has taken over bullet journaling makes it a bit stressful if you’re not the artsy, drawing type. It helps to remember that Ryder Carroll the creator of the system meant for it to be simple not stressful. I’m not saying things can’t be ‘reinvented’ but…. In its origin it was never meant to be complex, just pen & paper.

    • @lizvanwessem2055
      @lizvanwessem2055 2 года назад +6

      I would agree with that. I also think that another part of what Ryder intended although I'm not sure if it's specifically said anywhere, but more my understanding of it, is that bullet journalling should be what you need, rather than fitting your life/planning to someone else's set up. If you need pretty doodles etc., that's fine, if you work better with more minimalistic approaches, thats ok too. You do you, essentially. I did bullet journalling years ago and my own system has evolved to the point that, while it works really well for me, it no longer resembles anything like what Ryder has put forth so I don't really call it a bullet journal any more.

    • @soupgyal
      @soupgyal 2 года назад +5

      i agree so much.. i wish i had discovered his system before i found the artsy version. it would have been nice to try and evolve an organization style and then make it pretty instead of the other way around but cest la vie

    I don’t know if it’s just me but Ive looked at [bullet-]journaling for a while and have always found it to be a bit stifling creativity-wise… I love paper crafting and writing and have automatically gravitated to junk journaling… the issue arises, though, that modern day junk journaling technically isn’t created with “junk” (like the way it was intended) - and if you’ve come into junk journaling from outside the paper crafting world, like I have, it can be quite expensive when you start building your arsenal of tools, materials and supplies. From my own experiences it appears that most people enter junk journaling through scrapbooking, card making, mixed media and/or similar where they already have most of what they need. That’s definitely something to consider for the ordinary person out there - trust me, I’ve been there, junk journaling isn’t just about just buying a book binding kit and having paper like we’ve been told, there’s A LOT more to it….

      It's true that the most are coming through similar crafts to JJ and have many items for this. But I think it's the expectation that is limiting ourselves. To have all the "fancy stuff" around this, seeing a lot of videos etc. of artists (I see them all as artists 😊) that collected over years very much. Settle yourself and just one step at a time. To all who wants to give a try: think about the original idea of JJ and look around your "living area". The most of us have a scissor, glue, paper/cardboard and maybe some pens.
      The hardest part in my opinion is the collecting afterwards if you're in the JJ fever 🙈😂 you see EVERYWHERE things that can be use in a JJ and mostly for free or a few euros/bucks etc. Have fun and just create, try to not overthink. It's not the JJ at the end, the crafting journey is the "goal" ❤

      @@leesternchen Oh 100%!!! I only mentioned this because I can’t even count the times I postponed my first journal because I realized I didn’t have something (i.e., hole punches, die cutting machines, stamps, paints, trims - sometimes vintage trims, on and on…) I slowly started gathering my supplies through time and it was disheartening in the beginning - though it saves you in future projects not having to buy as many more supplies… I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who’s gone through this… it’s probably best coming into the junk journal world (those of us with a non-paper craft background) to start off with more of an art journal, glue or smash book approach, as it is more realistic and doesn’t burn a hole in your pocket, but once you’re aware of how other people create their junk journals and the materials they use, you inadvertently begin to try to work yourself up not long afterwards to add more things to it… I was just impatient and rushed it in the beginning and I don’t recommend it but it won’t kill you either because ultimately, in the long run, you may end up buying all those supplies anyway 😂😂😂

      @@calypso_lazuli I agree with you 100%. It’s natural to want to gather the supplies we see being used in the tutorials, thus creating a collecting hobby out of what originally was a desire to craft. When it comes to creating junk journals, the impulse to keep adding to the collection is not only difficult to control but also contagious.

    I have tried time and time again spending DAYS making bullet journals (some basically decently recreated other peoples spreads with differences to tailor to my needs) and ended up. Literally. Ripping. The. Notebook. From. Frustration. Like I look at the spreads and go woof…I hate this. Even though I started the day inspired to do it. It’s like ads. You see it so much that you think you need it and so you buy it. Then you are stuck with the product or need to go return it. I don’t like decorating my to dos. That resonated with me so much lol. I recommend spending some time off social media and get back to basics and revisit your old systems like you mentioned. Thanks for the video!!

    “Decorating a to-do list” I think that’s where I’m at right now as far as deciding where to spend my time. I’m busy at work and I’m trying to give myself more of a break at home anyway. Bullet journaling makes me feel like I should be knocking things off the list and I’m bad at tracking things. And turning through multiple pages each day to fill out a dot or a line on different pages is not something I have time for.

    I have traveled this same path… from Bullet journaling to a practice more in line with junk journaling and daily memory keeping. I found that if I made it too complicated, I would collect remnants of my day and then never get the days completed, resulting in a pile of junk and clutter. I’m in the process of simplifying so I enjoy sitting in my space and finding that flow state you described in another video. This video with the three pillars was very helpful. Thank you for taking the time and effort to make this video.

    I stumbled into junk journaling after I fell into the world of bullet journaling, but bujo for me has never really been about the art side. I have other artistic outlets. I do doodle in it, and have recently added more stickers, because STICKERS!!! But as someone who is a card carrying member of the adhd community, the bujo is the only planning system that has ever stuck for more than a month.
    The other thing to realize about bujos and artsy bujo, a lot of the youtubers who are HUGE on the scene are trained artists who decided that youtube was a better hustle than toxic corporate graphic design culture. And I absolutely respect that.

    Bree...it is ALWAYS so good to see one of your videos pop-up! It's funny, just this week I unpacked my collection of journals (What a hodgepodge!) while moving into my new studio (I'm so excited!) after moving from San Diego to Prescott, AZ. I journal because I like to record the memories and have used various type of methods (Faux-bonichi anyone?!) and notebooks. Most recently I have been using a weekly TN notebook but they tend to turn into little chunky 🐒s because I like to include pictures, collage, flips and flaps and too much mixed media. I think I am going to make myself a junk journal that is wider than a TN and not include so many pages. I think I just may need a bigger canvas. I'm thinking avout keeping the TN for recording appointments and keeping all the bits and bobs that I collect each week. Being able to unpack all my paints and other supplies and cracking open my art journal may also help. Bree, you seem to have it all under control!

I’ve also tried bujo but oh boy I only made the indicator, daily & weekly pages & then I gave up lmao I am more into wrote down what happened instead of planning stuff. Maybe I write a simple bullet of the stuff that need to be done & that’s all. I’m like you. So bujo defo not for me. And I tried myself using jj. And I loved it. There’s so much freedom using jj. And it suits what I intended to do. I’d like to know, do you still incorporate that planning sheets into your jj or you only use jj for a specific occasion or do you use them as daily record?
