been doing this for years was informed by the shop owner when the kombi system was new and was looking to purchase one he said just get the attachments and use on our old trimmers
I watched so many videos on pole hedge trimmers before I stumbled across this one! I have an older Stihl FS100RX line trimmer and was bracing myself to have to buy the Kombi system and be out another $800+ and found the KM 145 scythe head for $249+ Tax instead. Massive savings as I couldn’t really afford that big a leap but need Stihl for my overgrown property and you now have a new subscriber. Thank you so much man!
Update: Just trimmed up half my property and took some small trees and a stand of blackberry bushes about 8’ tall and 10’ wide with my new Stihl scythe. I recommend. Thanks again!
I don't know why anyone would think you don't know what your taking about you have save me more money then I have saved up in my bank thank you so mush. We love Steve 😁
Man thanks alot. I bought the hedg trimmer today and it went together as Steve described. Saved me almost $500 not having to buy another motor unit. Thank you so much your awesome.
This is awesome. My thoughts on this is that for someone like me who is their own mechanic, you could shop around for used old trimmers that need work that aren’t too hard to fix, then buy the at attatchments and you’de have as many fixed units as you need a discount because you can buy used ones that just need minor work
Love the video. Just an FYI. There are currently only two separate types of splined shafts being used on the market today. One is a 5 mm SQUARE shaft, straight or curved doesn't matter. The other type is a 7 point STAR shaft, again straight or curved doesn't matter. In actuality, the brand does not matter & how it's powered, doesn't matter either. I took a GAS POWERED STIHL STRAIGHT SHAFT & attached it to my 18 V Ryobi cordless trimmer powerhead for combined extended total reach of 12 ft and it weighed approximately 20 pounds but it works like a beast with very little lag time between trigger to trimmer head! It plowed through thick brush and grass like no other!! if you want some pictures or a quick video just let me know? I'm a bit camera shy so I'll let you enjoy the limelight.
Steve, you have saved me so much money in diagnostics, how to loosend bolts (your Brother), and now this. I purchased the Combi (big one) for all the reasons they market. I did keep my Straight Shaft old two-stroke Stihl as it weighs so little I still use it for reaching under things I need to weedwhack. But now, I can outfit it with my little chian saw and angle hedge trimmer attachment I purchased for the big Combi (heavy even with the carbon fiber pole). THANK YOU! (PS I used the link for the tool).
OMG! Thanks Steve! We got an FS91 a couple years ago (I take care of my aging parents 7 acres, needed something commercial, but they didn't have the extra at the time for the Kombi models.) I've been having to use an electric hedge trimmer for their store's lane of spirea, and admittedly had to patch very long cords a few times ;-) Going to have to pick up one of the hedge trimmer attachments and eventually a pole saw too! Thank you SO much!
Have you tried it yet? I did with a Power Scythe attachment and the Hedge Trimmer Kombi attachment on my FS100RX trimmer. Worked like a charm! Incredible! Saved me a lot of money.
Yes, Steve, you DID save me money and I thank you. It hadn't occurred to me to do this. I stumbled onto this video and went out the next day to my Stihl dealer. I bought the edger and 145 deg hedge trimmer attachments. I came home and swapped out the string trimmer head. It worked perfectly. Thank you again!! I subscribed to your excellent channel. Keep up the great content!
Stihl does have a few models that have star drive shafts, but most are square drive. Many other brands use the same square drive, so you can use many of their heads as well.
Steve, what a great hack! At first glance it might seem inconvenient, but for a homeowner who isn’t going to do certain tasks all the time, like trimming hedges it is brilliant! Thanks Steve!
I've been doing this for quite some time now. You can also swap different heads from different brands as long as they both have the square ended driveshaft. I use the echo bed redefiner head on my stihl fs131 weedeater and it works perfect. I also use my die grinder to cut custom length drive shafts and tubes. I just made a 3 ft long pole for a custom stihl articulating hedge trimmer that I just built.
Any idea if this works with the original Milwaukee string trimmer? It has a square drive unlike their new combi system which is spline. Regardless, I’m gonna try to find a square drive to find out. Hopefully the square is the same size.
Hey Steve. This is undoubtably one of your best videos. For my upcoming 70th birthday, my wife bought me the HL-0 non-articulating attachment for my FS90-R grass trimmer. Said she was tired watching me climb up and down the ladder trimming our 120 foot long, 6 + foot high dense chinese elm hedge with an 18 inch blade trimmer. Had to do both sides of the hedge separately and could never get it quite even. Now with this extra reach and the 20 inch Stihl blade attached to my trimmer, both sides are done at the same time with the top and sides of the hedge finished in less than half the time than before. And, perfectly squared! Just a heads up, though. The non-articulating HL-0 blade engages about 10 centimetres shorter than the string trimmer head.(50 vs 60 cm). In your video you use the 145 degree articulated hedge trimmer cutter that fits exactly to the string head marking. Just an advice to other subscribers. Here in Toronto, the HL-0 is $250, while the articulated is $370. Thanks again, Steve for a truly informative hack. Regards to April.
Hey Steve! Great video as usual! Thanks for helping people! I also have another similar hack I did for a friend of mine a couple of months ago with an Echo SRM-230 trimmer. He wanted an Echo PAS professional attachment system but didn't have $300.00 to spend for a new one. I ordered him a complete new upper shaft for a PAS which included the coupler for about $60.00-$70.00 USD. I swapped the new shaft for his straight trimmer shaft and he's managed to find a few of the attachments in used condition from places like Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. Of course you can always buy new attachments if you prefer. Cheers!
I did this when l first bought my FS 131R in 2017, now l am going to buy a Kombi coupler to attach to the end of my straight shaft to use the spare shaft as an extension for my pole chainsaw; It'll make my weed trimmer three feet longer! :)
Great hack, I purchased two STIHL tools years ago. Never have I purchased a complete tool with the engine. All I purchase the head alone. I keep the other STIHL as a back up. It’s pretty easy to change out the heads.
Hey Steve. I discovered you about 8months ago or so. I'm a HUGE Fan...and you've taught me so much about my power/sthil equipment I just want to pat myself on the back for a second... and give you another idea. I actually figured this out about 10 years ago... and put the hedge trimmer head on my extendable POLE saw/chain saw... which allowed me to trim super high cedar hedges... I know it doesn't have a clutch like the trimmer does... so it could potentiality do damage if a big enough branch stopped the trimmer had dead stop... but 10 years and counting and I have not had an issue thus far...
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon - Love your vids! As for price of attachments, bought a edger attachment for an old fs130r I brought back to life with your help, and dealer said they'd give me $20 off if I'd buy the kombi attachment and then give the pole part back. Told them I don't mess with kombi's, and that would work. Went to counter to pay, and the guy decided was too much trouble to take off, and said to just take it for free. Now I have the extra pole, in case I ever get a kombi unit. Like you said, don't throw away, never know when you might need it.
Thanks Steve, great video. I also do this with Tanaka. I’ve made it a super speedy to swap over attachments by replacing the standard torx (or actually Allen bolts in the case of Tanaka) for wing bolts. So now I can change heads without tools 👍. Cool cat 👌
I just bought a Sthil FS 111 R today but didn't want to pay out the rear for a pole saw.. I don't know how i came across your channel @Steve's Small Engine Saloon but I'm sure glad i did! I will now go buy the saw part itself so I can trim some trees.
@Steve's Small Engine Saloon, you saved me a wad of cash buddy, just purchased a straight shaft last year unaware of the Kombi kicked myself in the butt until this year, was literally a week away from buying the Kombi as well, not now, amazing hack buddy.
Thanks for that information I don't have this unit but I am going to look at mine to see what type of drive shaft I have. GREAT tip very help full channel.
About 12 years ago my Stihl dealer sold me the straight shaft string trimmer. He must have known this at that time. I had insisted that I wonted one that I could change the tools out on the end of the shaft. I will thank him next time I go into his shop.
This is a fantastic money saver. And back saver.... i figured this one out a few years ago when i was sent to do some hedge trimming and my cowoker grabbed the wrong powerhead (was spose to be the kombi). We have standard trimmers but after building my own franken"stringer" (ha) at home i had a good feeling i could swap the head ends. Saved a 45 min shop trip or about four hrs of hand trimming. Good tip.
So simple. Thanks! Astro the cat didn't seem happy about that. Maybe the beer wasn't cold enough... The one dislike must have been from a retailer recognizing they will lose a few sales of head units. ;)
Can you make the system even longer by adding the extra pole? I'm thinking of a square coupling for the drive shaft and a collar coupling for the pole.
Just as an FYI everyone, I've converted a dedicated Stihl hedge trimmer, or weed eater (EX: FS 90) into a combi unit (KM91) with only minimal changes. Just needs a short shaft and drive shaft with the coupler he showed in the video. Split the throttle trigger assembly apart and slide it in. Now you've got a combi unit.
Thank you so much Steve! I need a chain saw and hedge trimmer attachment and have just purchased a new straight trimmer. This will save me some money. This makes the 24th video of yours I have liked and saved.
So glad I came across this video.i just purchased a new Stihl straight shaft and I'm able to use my cultivator head from my non friendly craftsman mini tiller
Great tip Steve - I've got a generic brand straight shaft 9-tooth spline line trimmer and this tip is going to work for me also to convert to a pole hedge trimmer. Just ordered the hedge trimmer head (also a compatible generic version). You've saved me money and storage space - not having to have another garden tool in the shed! Thanks so much (Brisbane, Australia).
Will this hack work on the old version of the Milwaukee string trimmer to the new string trimmer that has the attachments... Awesome videos by the way Steve thank you for all your time
Steve you just saved me a ton of money I was just getting ready to purchase a Stihl trimmer . Keep the videos coming you made my day something told me to check your video out so glad I did Now That calls for a least 1 beer I am Out!!!
Wow thanks for this hack. I have a Stihl weed wacker sitting in the shed but I have not used it because it needs about $100 in repairs. Now I guess I'm going to fix it and get the chainsaw head for it
Works with the upper section too. Take the half shaft off of a bust combi head and put in onto another head - well certainly worked with one of the mains electric heads I have.
Steve a very late response and thank you from the UK. I bought the 135 string trimmer then later found about the scissor fitment which seems to be more precise when working near delicate items, I tried to research what you have suggested in your video, the UK Stihl distributer was unhelpfully vague when I asked, not a denial or a yes it is possible comment ! I had not found your channel at that point so I contacted Carls in North America who confirmed it would work, my order was placed straight away. I have a hedge trimmer with the telescopic extended handle but I feel the power head at the far end of the handle is underpowered compared with a power head down near the controls, I understand that because the need for a cable to connect to the adjustable head the size and weight of the power head need to be reduced giving the less than powerful impression. As soon as my finances recover I will be ordering the cutting head as shown in your video so thanks again.
STIHL won't be worried about this owner mod. They will probably see this as a way to sell more attachments. With more sold the production run increases and their cost per attachment goes down. Thus everyone wins and they keep happy customers sticking with the STIHL brand for their power eduiptment. Lucky was a good beer for this vid. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for this video ! I have a kombi that's husqvarna and a Stihl brush cutter ! I put my husqvarna edger attachment on my Stihl ! So this is great ! I like my husqvarna better ! And didn't want to keep switching attachments and had a unsure Stihl fs 56 ! This worked out great ! So saved me some cash and I bough you a beer on you're website !
That was a great tip, Steve! We need a hedge trimmer but it often enough to warrant the expense. As soon as I write this I’ll be looking for the KM unit to go onto my Stihl string trimmer! I love your videos, Steve! Cheers!
Thank you Steve for another great tip, cat scared the crap out of my wife had me laughing so hard, she's mad and I'm in the shop with a twelve pack, thanks again
Thanks Steve but I gave up pulling ropes several years ago. All battery now. 40 & 80 volt DeWalt & Kobalt. However, I still watch your great show & have a beer with you every time.
Steve do you think in the near future you can do a segment on Cut amending chain I have bulk chain I have one of those Mickey Mouse vice grip chain Breakers that doesn't seem to work be real Curious on how to do my own chain and save money and you have such a great way of explaining things it would be fantastic
I believe those hedge trimmer attachment heads actually swivel just for that purpose, at least the Ryobi one I have does. So I'd think the more expensive Stihl system should have that as well? I know Ryobi has 2 different ones, one actually adjusts for different angles of the cutter head, the other one is a fixed one...so if the Stihl system is similar you'd just have to make sure you pickup the right attachment LOL.

Thanks Steve, great video. I also do this with Tanaka. I’ve made it a super speedy to swap over attachments by replacing the standard torx (or actually Allen bolts in the case of Tanaka) for wing bolts. So now I can change heads without tools 👍. Cool cat 👌
That is brilliant. Not sure why that didn’t occur to me right away but that is awesome. I may do the same thing. Great idea!
I just bought a Sthil FS 111 R today but didn't want to pay out the rear for a pole saw.. I don't know how i came across your channel @Steve's Small Engine Saloon but I'm sure glad i did! I will now go buy the saw part itself so I can trim some trees.
Right on
You never disappoint Steve! Thanks for the tip
You`re Welcome...
@Steve's Small Engine Saloon, you saved me a wad of cash buddy, just purchased a straight shaft last year unaware of the Kombi kicked myself in the butt until this year, was literally a week away from buying the Kombi as well, not now, amazing hack buddy.
Right on Jason! Thank You...
Steve is the best thing since the invention of the wheel!!!! Love the videos! Cheers from Canada!
Glad you like them!
Thanks for that information I don't have this unit but I am going to look at mine to see what type of drive shaft I have. GREAT tip very help full channel.
You're Welcome...and Thank You...
About 12 years ago my Stihl dealer sold me the straight shaft string trimmer. He must have known this at that time. I had insisted that I wonted one that I could change the tools out on the end of the shaft. I will thank him next time I go into his shop.
Hey Steve, I'm wondering if you can do the same thing in between Echo/Shindaiwa straight shaft trimmer and Echo/Shindaiwa attachments?
This is a fantastic money saver. And back saver.... i figured this one out a few years ago when i was sent to do some hedge trimming and my cowoker grabbed the wrong powerhead (was spose to be the kombi). We have standard trimmers but after building my own franken"stringer" (ha) at home i had a good feeling i could swap the head ends. Saved a 45 min shop trip or about four hrs of hand trimming. Good tip.
Right on Art...
So simple. Thanks!
Astro the cat didn't seem happy about that. Maybe the beer wasn't cold enough...
The one dislike must have been from a retailer recognizing they will lose a few sales of head units. ;)
Right on Joe! You're Welcome...
One of your best ever videos Steve. Just saved me a bunch of dollars buying a new Stihl Kombi 👍
Great to hear!
Steve that was just awesome. Gonna go buy that saw end now.
Keep'em comin!
Right on Buddy...
Was going to get a power broom, you just saved me tons! I have a straight shaft trimmer!
Right on
Can you make the system even longer by adding the extra pole? I'm thinking of a square coupling for the drive shaft and a collar coupling for the pole.
Mate you've done it again. Pure geniuses.
Thank You...
Tyler E hi, great!! Would you please provide with part number or links for websites or ebay etc., so I can to the same conversion, thank!!!
that would be the next step. in a pinch steves hack is spot on.
Thank you so much Steve! I need a chain saw and hedge trimmer attachment and have just purchased a new straight trimmer. This will save me some money. This makes the 24th video of yours I have liked and saved.
Right on Larry! You're Welcome...
By any chance do you know if this system would work on Echo trimmers as well?
So glad I came across this video.i just purchased a new Stihl straight shaft and I'm able to use my cultivator head from my non friendly craftsman mini tiller
Cool....
Hello Chainsaw Tree Pruner attachment! Excellent Hack, Stevo! Can't wait to try it!
Right on Stevo...
I already had the KM trimmer but did not know this good news now I have both I'm a happy man.
Right on
Great tip Steve - I've got a generic brand straight shaft 9-tooth spline line trimmer and this tip is going to work for me also to convert to a pole hedge trimmer. Just ordered the hedge trimmer head (also a compatible generic version). You've saved me money and storage space - not having to have another garden tool in the shed! Thanks so much (Brisbane, Australia).
You're Welcome...
I forgot to say thank you for sharing this knowledge!!
My pleasure!
Glad I could help
My dog pissed itself when it heard that cat sound! Too funny! Thanks man :)
LOL! Sorry about that Kenny....
Shit, I thought it was 1 of my cats!😳🤣
You are the man. Such knowledge across all your videos. Between my lawn equipment and automobiles you and Scotty kilmer keep me fixed up
Absolutely amazing! Steve if I have a straight shaft echo trimmer can I do that with echo equipment?
Wow thanks for this hack. I have a Stihl weed wacker sitting in the shed but I have not used it because it needs about $100 in repairs. Now I guess I'm going to fix it and get the chainsaw head for it
Right on
Great production. Like the overhead camera shots. Takes time to show specific points in the video.
Thank You...
Works with the upper section too. Take the half shaft off of a bust combi head and put in onto another head - well certainly worked with one of the mains electric heads I have.
Well I just learned something new thank you Steve
You're Welcome...
The Stihl police have been notified. You’re gonna do some serious time Steve. Stihl is not meant to be trifled with.
Stop the BS. It’s how they manufactured the thing. Nothing wrong here.
I take it not everyone gets your sarcastic humor...
If they do show up just pull out a six pack of tall boys. 👍🏻
This is the best man in the game
Thank You...
You could get one of those coupler parts with the wing nut then you could use the shorter shaft as an extension for those really hard to reach places
i was thinking the same thing
STIHL won't be worried about this owner mod. They will probably see this as a way to sell more attachments. With more sold the production run increases and their cost per attachment goes down. Thus everyone wins and they keep happy customers sticking with the STIHL brand for their power eduiptment. Lucky was a good beer for this vid. Thanks for sharing.
Right on Ray...
Great hack Steve!
Your cat scared the crap out of me at the end of the video!....lol
LOL! Right on Rick...
Very cool!
Your shows amazing I'm always learning new things when I thought I couldn't.
Right on Brian! Thank You...
Nothing is better than a good, simple, honest Hack!!, Thanke Steve. By the way ...you got me at the end, I jumped a little LOL
LOL! Right on Bud...
This was such a great hack that I'm going to have a 12 pack of beer buddy. Thanks for sharing 👍👍👍👍👍
You're Welcome...
That’s why I always say “Steve you the man!”👍🏼👍🏼
Wow! I never knew this! Thanks for the hack Steve! Could I do this interchangeably between Stihl and Husqvarna?
the husky heads dont fit on the sthil shafts.
That is awesome. Now I can go out and buy a rototiller attachment. Thank you so much for the info. You're the best.
Have fun!
WOWZA, Steve came through again thank you Sir!👍🏻✌🏻️
You're Welcome...
That was a great tip, Steve! We need a hedge trimmer but it often enough to warrant the expense. As soon as I write this I’ll be looking for the KM unit to go onto my Stihl string trimmer!
I love your videos, Steve! Cheers!
Right on
Thank you Steve for another great tip, cat scared the crap out of my wife had me laughing so hard, she's mad and I'm in the shop with a twelve pack, thanks again
LOL! Right on Nick...
Steve, you are a hero! Thank you, and greets from Colombia
Thank You...and You're Welcome...
Been doing this for years now. I have a couple of the short kombi shafts wish I could use them with my straight shaft for extra reach.
You can.
Do you have a picture I have tried and asked that dealer they didn’t have any luck.
You can change a short shaft from the straight hedge trimmer with the longer string trimmer shaft.
Thanks Steve but I gave up pulling ropes several years ago. All battery now. 40 & 80 volt DeWalt & Kobalt. However, I still watch your great show & have a beer with you every time.
Right on Bill...
Steve do you think in the near future you can do a segment on Cut amending chain I have bulk chain I have one of those Mickey Mouse vice grip chain Breakers that doesn't seem to work be real Curious on how to do my own chain and save money and you have such a great way of explaining things it would be fantastic
I always start with a thumbs up before watching. Havent been wrong yet. Thanks Steve!
I appreciate that!
thank you for helping others
Someone should make a 90° trimmer head for doing Tops of hedges.
I have a Redmax articulating hedge trimmer. I can adjust the angle.
Thanks Steve! Awesome hack. I'm going get a hedge trimmer for my Stihl unit. You save me money. Love your channel!
You're Welcome...and Thank You...
