The house with the building material exposed is called 塗墼厝, which is built with mud bricks, with straws mixed in. There is another kind of traditional building in Beipu called 箅仔壁, which is built with mats weaved together with strips of bamboo.
Thank you for sharing so informative contents about Taiwan. I also increasingly like your channel as I can learn how to narrate our tourist sites in English.
Hi Richard! That's a great video on the rustic town 北埔, full of historical information. That's why I enjoyed your videos so much. Thanks. Oh I have to point out something that you mention at 1:55 of your video. You mentioned the cooperation between 漢人 and 客人. I think you are referring to 福建人 and 客人。漢人 actually refers to the major ethnic group of the Chinese that comprises of various dialects groups including 福建人 (the main dialect group of Taiwan's Chinese), 客人, 潮州人, etc.
Hi Richard It seem you are out and about exploring parts of Taiwan and seem that you are enjoying it. Good idea to bring a folding bicycle with you. Luckily you brought your wife's bicycle that have a 6 speeds gear. You are still looking great.
The fruit looks like 'kedondong' in Malaysia and Indonesia. It has a very sour taste and is usually blended into kedondong drink. Local Chinese in Malaysia calls it as 沙梨。
@@AsiaHikelopedia Buah Kedondong is very common here in Malaysia. Most families plant a tree of buah kedondong at the backyard of the house or by the roadside. We pound the fruit together with dry anchovies and chlli or blend the fruits to make juice.
15:36 number 3 highway, through Hakka settlements in Taoyuan, Hsinchu and Miaoli has alot of these washing places, and they wash everything, from laundry, to fruit/vege/food and yes the water are fresh thats why you get to see shrimp :) I used to catch them for fun :) there are eels present as well. Since 20 years ago, they starting to preserved these washing area, particularly a lot around Longtan District in Taoyuan
Nice video always since in Singapore, hope you could do a vid on your Brompton tour preparation, ie tools, gears, bags or even snacks. Thanks a million in advance buddy.
Wow, liked the bit of history and also the nice cool springs! We needed that now😓. Of course we can take a dip in the "springs" here, but will probably be invited for a "coffee session" and made to pay an "entrance fee" for our venture! 🤣.
4:58, some of the wall, could be made of mixture of mud, and rice/rice husk/leaf, not kidding. Taoyuan county used to have lots of these old buildings, this is due to steel, concrete were rare. Luckier and more wealthier will get good quality clay- clay which you make kitchenware/china with, otherwise just ordinary mud
the green mango is the oldest breed of taiwan, u can say that is original mango of taiwan. now it is used to make as frozan mango shoot due to its sour flavor before it becomes ripe.
Great work, Richard! Hi, Pinkie! I feel so ashamed, as a Hakka grown up in the city, I got so little knowledge about my origin… Next stop, Guan Xi (關西) I suppose? Happy weekend to you and your family!
Wondering how u explore Taiwan by bike as it is a much bigger island. I would have thought that u would use '小棉羊' instead. You are the real '历史哥'. I am sure the taiwanese people will benefit from this video. Enjoy !
@@AsiaHikelopedia In the video, you were pushing the bike all the way. Guess the terrain was not conducive for cycling. Like the history videos by 金素梅 also.
Hi Richard, nice traditional well preserved town. Can you please elaborate how to get there on public transport and how to get about town. If there is a bike rental, plus any nice local B&B. Enjoyed it very much as usual and see you again next week.
Lol....I remember number 3 highway, the highway link Kaohsiung/Pingtung via the mountain area through to Taipei that go right through Beipu, it's a lot easier now with freeway there, number 3 highway back in mid/early 80s was horribly windy, dad used to drive along this highway from Taoyaun to Hsinchu via Beipu and I used to get car sick and throw up along the way, somehow that difficult path and not so easily accessible has helped preserved the buildings in area from over development.
@@AsiaHikelopedia Sorry, I did watch the whole episode (as usual). What I meant was, did you saviour any hakka cuisine (typical hakka food)?. Thanks kindly!
@@philipchai9107 I didn't go for a meal as I was alone. Although last week my family and some friends went to Beipu for lunch and it was really good. We also made our own Hakka lei cha (擂茶, pictures on my instagram) which tasted great. So I may go back again and film it as it was so nice!
I did (see my Instagram) although I didn't film it as I was with family and friends (they are shy). I may go back again and film it at a later date because it is very special and also very nice to drink.
@@AsiaHikelopedia Have you tried Hakka Lei Cha or Hakka Tea rice in Beipu ?
Very interesting film style and history!
